Pán, vrabec a kluk:
Pán bydlí v domku se zahradou a žije docela obyčejný život. Pak se pod střechou domku uhnízdí vrabec. A taky přijde na návštěvu kluk ze sousedství. Ti tři si spolu rozumějí skoro beze slov a užijí si spoustu legrace. Jenže najednou vrabec zmizí. A zrovna, když je s klukem zle. Co se stane dál a jestli se vrabec zase vrátí, si přečtěte v knize spisovatelky, hudebnice a divadelnice, jejíž knihy byly už třikrát nominované na Magnesii Literu.

The man, the sparrow and the boy:
The man lives in a house with a garden and lives a fairly ordinary life. Then a sparrow makes its nest under the roof of his house. And also a boy from the neighbourhood comes to visit. These three understand each other almost without words, and enjoy a lot of fun together. But then suddenly the sparrow disappears. And this happens at a time when the boy is very ill. What happens next, and whether the sparrow returns, you can read about in a book by an author, musician and actor whose books have been nominated three times for the Magnesia Litera Award.

The strangest book choice 2020 award goes to...

As a matter of fact I got this book as a souvenir from Czech Republic and didn’t read for over 2 years until I decided it was time (because I’m failing to meet my annual reading challenge, if i’m honest).

It’s a gorgeous bilingual book - beautiful illustrations and comics, and the story is cute, too: a hard-working bearded man has a neighbor with a child and they start getting along, and there’s a sparrow which becomes friends with this neighbor’s son who’s sick, and this sparrow helps this kid cope. But that is it. It’s written as if it was just a synopsis of a potent plot, in huge font, in Czech, mirrored by the English translation followed by some cute comics and that’s that.

A children’s book? Maybe, I’m not sure. A book meant for learning languages? Possibly. Just a nice souvenir? Yup.

So the award for the strangest book read this year without a doubt goes to Pán a vrabec.

An interesting little book. I had no idea where it would lead (I could have read the back of the book, which tells almost everything. The style was unexpected and the design of the book novelly done. I wasn't sure what do do with the pages written as comic strips, as they were abruptly inserted into the story and no transition was made in or out of them. Still, an interesting book.

Krásný příběh o přátelství i naději.
Dvojjazyčný. Jazykovou úroveň nemohu soudit, ale nápad se mi moc líbí a věžím, že kniha může být zajímavým doplňkem výuky angličtiny, řekněme tak v 3. třídě.
