Three short weeks together. Three long years apart. Then fate threw us together again.
DeSean
I thought I was doing the right thing when I stuck out my broken marriage because of my unborn child, but hurting Tegyn was wrong. For the last three years, I’ve watched over her from afar, but I’ve been given a second chance. She needed a bodyguard, and there was no body I wanted to guard more than hers.
Tegan
I never expected to see him again. We’d ended our relationship and I’d reluctantly closed that door, but when danger landed on my front step, DeSean was the first person to have my back, my front, and if I wasn’t careful... my heart.
How else was she going to parlay her two favorite past times into a career?
Emma is single and loving it. Like her first character, Alysin, Sin for short, she doesn't believe in settling or in settling down. She loves to indulge in her passions whenever the mood strikes and enjoys keeping all of life's cliche moments spicy.
Known for her sense of humor, Emma surrounds herself with friends whose antics often become the source of book fodder. Her ideal situation would be to explore the Caribbean while writing. She pursues that dream daily.

Really sad that this is being marketed as a "taboo" love story. There's nothing in here to be taboo about. I suppose you could say that DeSean (H) being married is slightly taboo, but it isn't written that way. It makes me wonder about the author's reason for calling it taboo (other than to try to get into a certain romance sub-genre). Is Ms Nichols a black writer exploring taboos in her culture about black men and white women? Is Ms Nichols a white author on some sort of misguided racial commentary? Or somewhere in the middle, failing at getting her point across? What I'm saying is, apart from two very short conversations between DeSean and his family, this could easily have been a couple of any, or many races. It's just not important to the story.
If this had been marketed as any another romance between two people who just happen to be different races, I would say this:
Cute little romance. If you have hangups about people cheating (which I normally do), you may not like this one. The H is technically married, though not in any real relationship with his wife, which he made clear to her. There's not really any suspense as it was obvious who was the problem, and the resolution was telegraphed from the start. But I liked it well enough.
But it wasn't, so I won't be looking for more by this author.
DeSean (D as everyone calls him) runs a security company and is currently separated from his wife, but she lives downstairs in the same house as him. He told her she could stay until she found place, which she never plans to do. Tegan has broken up with her long time boyfriend due to they want different things. She wants marriage and he keeps putting it off. When "D" and Tegan meet the sparks fly the chemistry is hot but other factors are working against them and they go separate ways. Then 3 years later they run into each other again when Tegan takes a self defense class, because someone has been sending her hate mail, and "D" is the instructor. The chemistry is still there. This is a suspenseful quick read that I recommend.
Ah, I can call this book my guilty pleasure. Although in these times an inter racial relationship shouldn't be taboo anymore, it still happens.
Apart from the different skin colour and cultures that our main characters have to face, throw in a psycho ex, a fight for a second chance, poor decisions, family drama over the said skin colour, a sweet little boy and you have all the ingredients for a romantic but dramatic love story!!
I really enjoyed this story, the main characters first introduced to me in Sex and The Single Dad. DeSean and Tegyn's relationship seems doomed from the start, his being married when they first meet. Their attraction is obvious but she won't be the other woman. As I think back though, she was, their affair a real thing until his wife revealed she was pregnant. The new lovers parted, she married an ex and he agreed to raise his child with the mother. But Camilla lives in his basement, under a strict set of conditions to maintain the peace.
Reunited when Tegyn's life is threatened, the ex lovers fall easily back into the tug of war that engages their hearts. But there is a very real danger to her, a shadow over her life that inevitably pushes them closer. DeSean will not allow her to be hurt, keeping her under his roof despite his family's objections. (That's a whole other can of worms, old wounds reopening that had been allowed to fester too long.) He truly loves her, even more when he sees how much she cares about his little boy. Keyon is adorable, his childish innocence bringing light to a story that is filled with so much darkness. The ultimate culprit is no surprise, so much that I couldn't believe no one figured it out before it was almost too late. The HEA is achieved and his family finally comes around to liking Tegyn.
Overall an enjoyable read / listen with great characters, delightfully tense moments and a little steam. The editing could have been much better though. The Audible version was okay, only as good as the book was written. AI versions should be prepped so words sound correct when they have multiple pronunciations (ex. read / lead).
DeSean and Tegyn met at the wrong time and it devastated them both. Three years later due to a threat to her life they reconnect with more baggage than before, but it's the right time this go around. DeSean is determined to prove to Tegyn that they're meant to be. Tegyn is scared that she'll be hurt again by DeSean more than the threat on her life. This is a good second chance romance there's love, lust, drama and lots of crazy.
DeSean and Tegyn have such a hard battle to fight in order to be together. I was a little concerned when it started out sounding like it was going to be a cheating story, but it quickly became something very different. I completely adore Tegyn for saying that she didn’t want to be the third member of DeSean’s marriage. I loved watching them pull together to resolve the situations they were caught in. There were times that I had some difficulties reading through the regional dialect, though.
DeSean and Tegan meet and spend some time together, but when DeSean's wife announces that she is pregnant, he decides to go back to her. Three years later, Tegan needs self-defense lessons after receiving threats, and DeSean happens to be the instructor. The sparks fly again and the feelings come back. Despite the baggage they both have after that time, will they be able to finally get together and be happy? I loved the story and the characters.
I liked the idea of this story. However I would recommend working on the fluidity. When reading I like the story to unfold in front of me. The way this was written was choppy. Also there were places that the font would get really big in conversation and go all over the page, that was unnecessary in an adult book. The story and characters should be enough to keep the reader's attention. Solid start though.
First off, book cover is deceptive. Picture looks to be two African Americans. Story is really interracial love story. Second if that’s the taboo it’s glossed over and repaired too easily. I wonder is this author black or white? Third, the plot, who’s the bad guy? Way too easy to figure out. Even with all that, there was something about DeSean and Tegan I liked. Will I read this author again? Don’t think so.
DeSean & Tygen went thru alot of turmoil with his manic-depressed ex wife. From her stalking Tegyn, suicide attempts to gain sympathy from DeSean, and holding Tegyn by 🔫 point. A good story line helped to create characters that were relatable. I would surely recommend the book. Three 🌟 🌟 🌟 rating
The author uses an all to familiar stereotype - the angry and later crazy black woman to justify an adulterous bi-racial relationship where every woman in the African American males life detest the white heroine simply because well she’s white. Poor plot, and predictable action make this a no star read.
Stopped reading halfway through. Couldn’t take the writing anymore. Either the author has the most incompetent proofreaders and editors or she deliberately wrote the dialogue to make the Black characters sound as stereotypically ignorant as possible. I hate giving up on a book but I had to with this one. The one star was generous.
They are together but he is married, His wife splits them up by saying she is pregnant. 3 years later she is in trouble and guess who comes to the rescue. But things haven't changed much. It was a good read. I was given a review copy and voluntarily review it.
This story is fast paced, well written, easy to read combine this with its witty, strong-willed characters you’ve definitely got the perfect mix of drama, suspense and non stop action in and out of bed. Sooo much happens you don't want to miss anything !!!
Meeting that special person and it not working out. Three years later and you meet again but you both still have baggage. Will these two work it out so they can be together? This was a good storyline with good characters. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
He left her to do right by his child only to regret leaving her. She tried to move on, hot married and working on getting divorced. Someone is threatening her and now he's back in her life. Can they make it? Will they get that second chance to make things right?
This was an interesting experience. You learn that all things happen for a reason. Something good can come from something bad and vice versa. A second chance makes a difference in your life.
DNF I started this book without knowing much about it. What I realize is that I’m not going to spend my time reading a book about the black guy with a “ghetto” baby momma and his perfect white girlfriend. That doesn’t interest me in the least.
Love this story..My first read with this author..Gotta read more..Just right in all areas of A Taboo Relationships..Cant wait to read more of Emma Nichols..
OMG! I loved the story of D and Tegan!!!! I love a second chance story and this book was right up my alley!!!! D is going through a rough patch with some baby mama drama!! He's always had a thing for Tegan, but never acted on it. D runs a security company and he's always busy and then the baby mama drama happens. He has to get his life in order before he can pursue Tegan. Tegan is with D while he's trying to get a divorce from his crazy wife. Yep, you read that right. Wife, but they are separated. Tegan is getting threats and she needs to learn some self defence just in case something happens. She runs into D again!! And man she can't stop thinking about him, and D never forget Tegan. Lots of twists and turns you didn't see coming in the book, kept me going, cause I was rooting for D and T so much!!!! Oh man that baby mama drama killed me!! I wanted her out the way so D and T could get back together. Can they get through all of this and make it work?
Some of my fave quotes from the book
1. Not only was I responsible for keeping drunk guys out, I was in charge of making sure the weaves didn’t fly. - D at work! LOL!
2. I’d frozen up the moment he used the ‘L’ word. Actually, I’d damn near passed out. - AWE Tegan!
3. He was showering…and I wanted to be the water… - Tegan thinking about D in the shower! LOL!
Sweet Taboo is a sweet second chance love story. This is one of those stories where when love is meant to be it wins out in the end. Love the way the author brought DeSean and Tegyn back together and how the spark was still there. A well written book, believable characters and a sweet love story make this a must read.
