“Not since Louis L’Amour have I found a western protagonist like John Crudder! “ “…enjoyed the whole series and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys westerns.” “This was a book that you couldn't put down….” “Roy [Clinton] is the real deal when it comes to western novels….”
Someone wins. Someone loses. Someone lives. Someone dies. John Crudder is an ordinary twenty-five year old law school graduate looking for work in the old west. What he finds instead is the love of eighteen year old Charlotte and the reality that he cannot have her without placing her in mortal danger. Raised to privilege, Crudder finds life as a cow hand and later as a marshal, satisfying. Rather than being about to live that simple life, he finds himself thrust into the role of Midnight Marauder. Unless he stands up for those who have no voice, more lives will be lost and an entire town will be wiped out. Be sure to read the other novels in the Midnight Marauder Midnight Marauder Return of Midnight Marauder Revenge of Midnight Marauder Midnight Marauder and the President of the United States Love Child Bad to the Bone Candy Man Also be sure to read Lost, about a modern-day cowboy, Clint Hazard, who succeeds in making an absolute mess of his life. In book one of this series, Roy Clinton shows his passion and knowledge of life in the untamed west. The vivid descriptions of the land, structures, and people immediately brought into the story. I wanted to ride on Midnight just like John.
John Crudder, the main protagonist, is a law school graduate who travels to the old west and finds his education is not necessarily his biggest strength. As he abandons his privileged birthright, he finds satisfaction in sticking up for those who do not have as big a voice or as fast a gun. John Crudder is a champion of justice for one and all.
John took on the job as a cowhand on a ranch paired up with the colorful Jesse. They bonded as coworkers and friends. John’s strength of character drew me in immediately, especially as he becomes smitten by a young woman of 18. It was charming to find that at 25, John had little experience with woman or even dancing. Jesse comes to the rescue and teaches John to dance while they are out rounding up the breed cows in this charming scene. Jesse also illustrates his ability to show patience to his friend, in an endearing manner, positioned perfectly in the wide-open pastures.
“All right, Little Buddy. It’s time for your first dance lesson. Come on over, we might just as well get started.” John groaned in protest. “Jesse, I don’t think this is a good idea. I don’t know anything about dancin’ and don’t think I can learn.” “It may not be a good idea,” replied Jesse. “But if you don’t learn from me, you’re gonna take Charlotte to the dance and then she’ll discover you don’t know how to dance. What’ll you say for yourself then?” “You’re right. I have to learn. I hope you can teach me,” John added with a note of exasperation in his voice. Jesse walked over to John and bowed sharply. “Would you care to dance?” “What kind of question is that?” We just went over that. I don’t want to but I don’t think I have any choice.” “You’re missin’ the point. That’s how you ask a woman to dance. You bow and say, ‘Would you care to dance?’”
Narrator R. William James has the perfect voice to bring you into this story. His rich baritone voice reminds you that these cowboys are strong men that interact with vulnerable women. This is the first genre I have listened to by this voice actor and he simply nails it perfectly. He becomes each character as he infuses the right sense of drama into every scene connecting the listener to an already awesome story.
I recommend this story for fans of westerns as well as those who want to try one on for size. This size fits all. Enjoy! Lucky for us when you finish this one, Roy has another in this series to captivate you.

Richard sells his father's business and heads west, winding up in Bandera, Texas. He's a trained lawyer, among other things. But he has a very strong sense of justice for every man regardless of ethnicity...Richard has decided to become the "Midnight Marauder" dealing out justice to those who feel they are above the law..and actually "thumb their nose" at the laws, and in some cases murder lawmen as they execute their duties..as you continue to read this series of a man trying to bring SOME semblance to justice and fairness to the down trodden who are just trying to take care of their families and their needs.
This is the first book in a series and the good news is there are already 3 available to get you started! The book starts with a murder and then jumps back in time to give the reader the story leading up to the murder. There was a lot to like in this book and if you are a fan of westerns, this may just be a new series for you.
I liked the basic story and I am interested to see where John is going to take us, the readers. For me there was a little too much repeating of details that I could easily recall and some basic dialogue that I did not feel added much to the story. But, I am curious and will continue reading – so stay tuned!
Midnight Marauder, seems to start off like many other Western stories I've read , but then the difference in the main theme of most Western I read changed and a surprise was forthcoming that just continued to grow !
I gave this book four stars but, I would have liked to give it five stars . This book has a new and fresh story to tell with many turns and twists . The twists give this book a new direction compared to other westerns I have read . It keeps making me want to pick up and read more everyday . Don't miss this read and it's consecutive books. It just keeps getting better and the suspense builds on and on .
The First Step in justice for the Midnight Marauder
RC has penned the 1st western novel in the Midnight Marauder series which contsins the story of a young man from an extremely wealthy family. He is very astute and graduates from high school at 13 and college at 18. His parents are killed and he inherits a fortune. He decided to leave his father's right hand man in charge while he attends school in England. On return he starts his western travels. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
Roy did a great job of capturing me in a journey into the wild west. John was an unexpected pleasure and looked forward to reading where he would end up, throughout the book. Unfortunately the justices of the west were many and it is nice to see someone like John was there to balance the scales when possible. I wish I had a horse like Midnight. Sounds like he was a pleasure to ride. Several twists and turns, but John definitely had an amazing journey. GOOD read.
This was a great read!! John Crudder is a wonderful character fighting evil. It is good to read about a hero who is willing to sacrifice to do good and protect his fellow man. The book holds your interest all of the way through and leaves you eager to read the second book and find out what John will do next.
There is a bit of midnight marauder in most of our souls. Put in certain circumstances where it was necessary I believe many of us are capable. But carefully, carefully, never getting too arrogant...
Midnight Marauder: A Series of Western Novels Featuring the Adventures of John Crudder
I enjoyed the story line of the man named John Crudder, it was inventive . I did feel that even though the story was attention grabbing, it could have been better. Good read.!!
This novel details how one man decided to deliver justice to those who kill but haven't been charged with a crime. Well written with plenty of action. I highly recommend this author.
This is a different kind of western, than any I've read before. The hero is not your normal cowboy, but pulls it off quite spectacularly. Enjoyed very much, going after book two right now.
A good read until the ending. What a brutal way to end a book. I guess the idea was to make you want to buy book 2 but I fear it may end poorly and you'll have to buy book 3. The ending killed my interest to read more.
The theme was not your typical western, Vigilate justice. Gets deep into motives. Good character development. Enjoyable reading. Will continue with the series.
