The Vein Chronicles #3

Eternity's Awakening

Rate this book
Heartbeats had a pesky way of complicating things.
They almost always came with the nasty side effect of humanity and finally... death.
Since Thorne came into my life, I'd been plagued with both.
Heartbeats and humanity.
Both of these things were going to be the death of me.
One way or another.
And the death of everyone I knew and loved, a list growing longer with every beat of my newly repaired—and irritating—heart.
That pesky humanity was almost as toxic as the most debilitating illness on this hunk of rock, killing more humans than any vampire could.
Love.
And there I was, attached to a slayer who I couldn't be undead without.
Friends who I was becoming increasingly attached to.
All things—people—he would take away from me.
Then he'd take me too.
But if it came to that, I'd yank out my beating heart and crush it in my hands before he could touch me.
It was lost anyway. If he won, my eternity would come to an end. As it happened, so would the world.
That only meant I couldn't lose.

It really pains me to write this, especially since I LOVED book one and two of this series, but I just could not get into this book. I found it so tedious to get through. It is super long to start with. Not to mention I figured this was going to be the final book in the series, but nope, we have yet ANOTHER cliffhanger and another book coming. And since this book already made me feel like this story is being drawn out WAY too much, I doubt I am going to continue with the series.

I am also over Isla. I loved her sarcasm and sass in the first two books, but I just found her constant mouthy attitude immature in this one. The way she treated and spoke to Thorne (and pretty much everyone) most of the time didn't sit right with me. I got tired of the way she never took ANYTHING seriously. There is only so much over the top attitude a reader can take before it because stale, repetitive, and annoying. <--- I reached that point very early on in this one. I feel that after three books Isla should have matured a little as a character, but she behaves the same way all through this one as she did at the beginning of the series.

On the positive side of things, I still think this author is an excellent writer. I am still a huge fan of Rick's and really would love to see him get a book of his own. Helen intrigued me as well. So yea, maybe I am just in a mood...who knows. I am sure many readers will love this one (rightfully so) so don't take my review as gospel. Read a few more before you decide whether this book is for you or not.

And the drama continues...

It took me so long to figure out how to rate this story. There was so much to love and one glaringly obvious thing to hate.

What I wanted to do to Isla for most of this book 😒😠

Ultimately, the good outweighed the bad and here we are. I loved the way the story of the uprising continued to unfold and the idea of a prophesy. It was still interesting to see how all of these characters played a pivotal part, no matter how hard they fought it.

Screw it, I can't continue until I get my Isla issues off of my chest. She drove me up many walls with her behavior. For the first two books, I found her annoyingly awesome and it was easy to stomach her superficial and irreverent attitude. I just couldn't do it again. No more excuses for this witch.

"I am well aware of your unpredictable, narcissistic, childish, and downright suicidal behavior." - Rick

And she had the gall to be proud of her abhorrent actions. I read this book with equal parts disdain and disgust over her character. At one point she even points out that people keep expecting her to grow up or evolve and that it wasn't going to happen because she loved who she was.

I'm all for loving yourself. If you can't love you, how can you expect others to love you? I get that 100%. And you shouldn't really have to change just to please other people. But when you're a horrible person and can admit that and when you know that those you love and who love you find it hard to completely get behind your movement? Loving yourself to the point where you hurt, disregard, and disrespect those you claim to love takes it too far. Considering that most of the book is told from her perspective, with her sarcasm, ignorance, and so-called sass sprinkled liberally throughout, this story has gotten a bit hard to stomach.

And really, how much more of this am I supposed to take?

When you take Isla out of the equation, for the most part, the rest of this story was insanely good. Whenever Thorne wasn't busy saving Isla, being concerned for Isla, talking sense into Isla, and generally being her little Jiminy Cricket, he was the alpha, protective, vicious, and fearsome warrior I had come to know and love. I only wish I got to see more of his perspective. His voice of reason was beyond necessary. Let's not forget the colorful cast of secondary characters, such as Sophie, Conall, Duncan, Rick and Scott. All were amazing and a couple of them broke my heart into pieces. I literally gasped from the shock and had to control my anger at the change in the story. Luckily a glimpse at the end gave me some hope, but my heart is still quite broken.

Heart. Freaking. Broken.

So there's a rebellion and a rise for control of the human race. Leader of the pack is Isla's not-so-dead husband, Johnathan. I really liked how the author used him as a potential growing pain for Isla and how fabulously it failed. Death is imminent and still Isla can't take anything seriously. At least her bloodthirsty ways are still alive and kicking. I love the fight scenes and every chance there is for Isla to prove why I hate and love her so much!

I know. I know. Bitch has me so confused!

Honestly, this story has been incredible. With the bold strokes this author gave to the world she's created, you can't help but be engrossed by the drastic twists and turns that she puts her characters through. I'm constantly surprised and I love not knowing what to expect next. Nothing is predictable and no one is safe. Is a happy ending still possible? I sure do hope so. I can't wait to get my hands on the next book of the series to see what sort of chaos will be my undoing.

Wow, wow wow I am blown away with this one...... there are no words.

If I had to sum this book up as quickly as possible I would say my mind is blown with this book. Really that could be my entire review. I’m not sure how to go about after this review; honestly after finishing this book my mind is all over the place. So much happens in this book and yet saying that, that still can’t give this book justice. First don’t read this book if you haven’t read the rest of the series, honestly that’s just not an option with this book but if you haven’t read this series I can’t tell you how much you are missing. Read this series and then read this book, you can come back later and thank me.

So much happens in this book, yes I know I said that but it’s not just one of those "this is a good book and you need to read it to read the next book". No from beginning to end so much happens, things we hope for things we could never dream of. I am blown away by this book and the mind Anne Malcom must have to come up with all this. I don’t know how she can come up with this story and I have not a clue how she can keep track of everything. The world that Anne Malcom created just keeps getting more and more detailed and astounding. Many questions are answered in this book, in fact many questions we didn’t have are answered and with any series many new questions are left.

I am pretty good at guessing where books are going but this book had my jaw on the floor many, many times. This is one of those books that is hard to review because you don’t want to spoil it and with so much happening I could spoil a lot. This book takes place right where we left. The world is still up in the air against good(Isla) and evil. Her ex is out for revenge with her just as crazy mother and Isla and her band of "heroes" will do anything to stop them. Thorne is Thorne, thank goodness for that. We see Sophia and her wolf, Thorne’s hunters and the vampires we met previously as well as Thorne’s little sister bent on saving the world with the adults and Scott, lovable Scott who will do anything for Isla.

From page one something is happening in this book and though there is so much going on Anne Malcom does an amazing job of not overwhelming us but entertaining us and taking us on this wild ride right along with her. Isla is fierce and strong and loving while at the same time she wraps herself inn a tough amour to protect herself from pain that she learned years ago has the ability to destroy her. I truly can't recommend this book enough, with every book in this series Anne just shows out. This is one of those series you can't stop and you need to complete till the end just to see how it will in fact all end.

*Thanks Anne for this beta book.

You know that saying, “third time’s the charm...”
That’s how I feel about Eternity’s Awakening. I am stunned silent. This is how you go out with a bang.
Anne Malcom didn’t just slay with this book, she grabbed an entire ship full of TNT and blew it out of this world.

There was so much going on in this book. I mean, you’re just thrown into the fire within the first couple of chapters of the story and then taken back in time to lead us to that anxiety filled moment. I was screaming from the beginning. “Nooo! Wait, please, I need to know more! Why is there so much blood? Who is coming to help?!”
The whole book was amazing. We got to see a new side of Isla, one I don’t think I ever saw coming. Her relationship with Thorne grows even more, regardless of our sexy alpha’s never ending attempts to go all “caveman” on Isla any chance he gets.
We get to see our signature redhead in all her sass and action packed “badassery” with her trusty soulmate sister, Witchy Sophie.
God, I love that relationship so much. I need a Sophie and Isla in my life. I have said this before and I’ll continue to say it again.
Or better yet, just give me Anne Malcom. I’ll take the brains behind the operation. Be my friend, Anne Malcom, PLEASE!
Ugh, I really didn’t expect to cry with this book. Or, well, what am I talking about? What Anne Malcom book hasn’t made me cry?? This woman is so good at packing powerful, emotion filled punches with her words. She so amazing at grasping these feelings and sucking us readers in to join along with her characters.
With so much action, you can only expect that much death. And there are some doozies in this book. I’m still clutching my heart and trying to steady my breath.
Amazing... simply amazing! 10 Stars!! You’ve done it again, Malcom. #WinnerWinnerChickenDinner

Oh how I HATE it when I can't rate a book above 5 stars... Because if I could... This book would be a million and that wouldn't even be enough....

The continuation of the Vein Chronicles and Isla's story was everything I could've imagined and SO MUCH MORE than that! Isla is definitely back and she's badder than ever... So many questions answered and so many more questions asked. You can't help but to keep turning the pages to find out what happens next!

The writer has definitely left her stamp on the PNR world and I adore it. Shes created her own theology and it fits the story so well.

My heart hurt when I was done reading, but it hurt in the best way. I laughed, I cried, I yelled, I shook my tablet... All of the emotions were absolutely felt!

I've read this story 3 times and it gets better everytime.

Holy HELL this needs to be on your shelf!!!!!

I received an ARC of this book from the author and I voluntarily reviewed it. Thank you Anne Malcom!

Guys, this book was awesome, epic, totally witty and fun to read, yet heartbreaking and kindle-trowing-across-the-room frustrating. This book reads exactly with the same flow and narration we know and love from the previous two Isla books. Get ready for sass level 1000.

We see more of Isla’s facade start crumbling in this book. We start seeing a softer side to her. One that makes her more three-dimensional and complex.

This book, like the others is jam packed with pop culture references that will make you laugh and smirk. The characters in this series are just so alive (don’t tell Isla I described her as alive... shh...). They jump off the pages and punch you in the face with their exuberance, making this read a wild ride.

There is no dead time in this novel - no pun intended. The action and suspense is non-stop and extremely riveting. I don’t think my racing heart got a break from page one. Action - hot romance - action - crazy revelation... and so it goes.

If you like books full of personality and sarcasm, that still pull at your heartstrings and maybe your sanity, then this series is for you.

Oh how I have missed Isla my sassy vampire and she is on fire in this one. I LOLd a lot, I got teary a lot, I got squirmy/horny a lot & I got so angry that my Ipad might have been thrown at one point!!!

So much happens in this story I was binge reading as fast as my adult life would allow... it's SOOO GOOD!!! We pick up where things left off in the last book and this one is packed with action, sass and a lot more emotions than we've experienced before. We really get to know what everyone means to each other and what they're willing to do to keep those they love safe.

The ending had me slamming my Ipad down on my bed after flicking the page over and over hoping there was more to come. How could the author leave me like this. Seriously!!! I need book 4 immediately. Definitely recommend.

I loved everything about this book!! Isla and Sophie are the best paranormal duo. They both have sass for days, can kick some serious butt and even though they won't admit it care deeply for those close to them. This book has all the elements of a great story ; epic love, steamy sex, unexpected friendships and more than a few surprises. If you enjoy paranormal books than you need to read this series!!

Another excellent instalment in the series.

Lots of fighting going on (we are in the middle of a war)

Lots of uneasy alliances.

I felt like EVENTUALLY Isla started to show a vulnerable side. Not that she does not remain sarcastic and kick ass, but that toward the end, she stopped trying to push Thorne away even while loving him.

Again full of a great cast of secondary characters.

It was just a great, exciting, thrilling book to read.

And then it broke my heart! A couple of times.

Fixed it a little tiny bit, but still I am GUTTED.

Anyway, in a word this book was...

How long for I have to wait for book 4!!???

I need it now!

This book continues the amazing story of Isla, Thorne, Sophia, Duncan, and Rick.

Question:
Can an author write each book and make it better then the book before? Especially when the first in the series was fabulous?

Answer:
If her name is Anne Malcom, then YES!

Start at the beginning of The Vein Chronicles, then take a look at her other books, because each one is phenomenal.

This author has a mean, creative, sassy, irreverent voice, that provides us with the opportunity to be absorbed into her imaginative world.

Reading her books is like a vacation for your brain!

25 stars...all I can say is wow. The ending KILLED me!!! I finished this book 3 days ago and had to think of what I wanted to write. This book went ABOVE and BEYOND my expectations. It was amazing. I'm still in shock!!!! All I can say is Anne is truly talented. To be able to keep up the sarcasm ,wit, banter and fashion references like she does is a talent within itself. This book was absolutely hysterical. The relationship between Isla and Sophie is one of the best friend relationships I have ever read. We also got more of Sophie and her wolf. Plus Thorne... I love him. I loved every single second of this book. I hope we hear more from the king and the pesky human mute 'Helen' plus more....... this book was anything but boring. I was on my seat the entire book. Round of applause and standing ovation for Anne she nailed this one!!!! Oh and Thorne's little sister....she is amazing!!

I absolutely loved book 1 and 2 but this one fell short with me.

Isla drove me bat shit crazy. Literally. I loved her sarcasm in the first 2 books but she was so annoying in this one. I don’t know what changed. Maybe it’s just me and I wasn’t in the right mindset to read this book. I don’t know. But I was fed up with her crap.

Also I thought this was the last of The Vein Chronicles. I don’t know why I thought that but I was far from right. We end on a cliff that is pure torture. I’ll read book 4 just to see if Anne can make Isla more tolerable. I have the feeling that she’s a character you are just going to continue to hate.

The redeeming factor in this is the writing. I was really drawn into the story and the characters themselves. Even though I hated Isla she still made it to where some parts of her story were interesting and those were the parts that earned 3 Stars.

I loved Thorne! He had his flaws but overall he was one of the best characters in this book. He’s a great male lead and this book proved why.

Please judge this book for yourself instead of my review. Like I said above maybe I wasn’t in the right mindset to fully enjoy this book. Come to that conclusion on your own. Anne Malcom really is a fantastic writer. I’m still a huge fan and will continue to read her work.

Tears, so many tears were she's reading this book. As many other readers stated, this book deserved more than five stars! I had missed Isla & Thorne and Sophie too of course. This book will keep you enthralled the entire time. The ups, the downs, the war, the love, the battles, the loss. It's all so much to take in. Book #3 definitely kicks butt! Thanks for another stellar book Anne!

This is the book where Isla finally gets to go to war against her douchebag exhusband, Jonathan and does it with her trademark snark, sarcasm, and flair, though she doesn’t come out of it unscathed. We’ve (the readers) have known all along that Isla isn’t exactly the monster she touts herself to be, but this journey brings her humanity to the forefront. This book is not only action-packed, it’s an emotional rollercoaster. If you’ve enjoyed the series so far, keep going. It’s definitely worth the ride.

This series is so criminally underrated. Isla is the absolute queen — fierce, fashionable, and unapologetically badass. The mix of wit, sarcasm, and emotion in this story had me hooked from start to finish. I laughed, I gasped, and yes… I sobbed. That ending? I refuse to accept it. There has to be more — there better be more.

Aaaand here we go!! Finally in the third book stuff starts to happen.
I usually love a snarky, sassy, and over all badass FMC. But for me Isla just haven't been it. She's been like way too self absorbed, so I'm hoping that book 4 will keep up the character development book 3 have brought.

Almost didn’t finish....

The inner monologues were (way) overdone and very annoying in this book. Worse than than book 2. The spoken monologues by the MC were equally annoying and predictable. So much inner thoughts and so little actual conversation btw characters. After the 58% mark in the book - I was going to just stop reading but instead I started looking for actual spoken dialogue between characters, read mostly that and I ended up finishing the book inside of an hour and enjoyed it more that way (this is why I gave it 2 stars vs 1).

That being said- For going the extra mile to finish when I just should have stopped reading, I got rewarded with a super disappointing end and a cliffhanger that anyone could see coming at the ~75% mark in this book.

More annoying than the inner monologues is the continuation of the insta-romance of the MC and Thorne. There is nothing interesting about this couple now that they are together and have lots of “mind blowing/earth shattering orgasms” together (yes those phrases actually get used multiple times throughout the book by the MC). Thorne is simply window dressing throughout the book and you almost start hoping they really break up for good midway through just to see something semi-interesting happen.

This series started off good but now just looks to be heading towards a dismal, sad and predictable end. I won’t be wasting more time on this author or series. Such a shame to see a good set of characters and story line completely derail.

Avoid this book if you are having any doubts about continuing on with the series as I promise you won’t be happy having wasted the time.

I have no idea how to write this review but to say BUY THIS BOOK!

You definitely need to start from the beginning of this series, but this isn't your typical fantasy vampiric romance. It's sassy, it's petty, it's designer clothes and a bloody drink. It's sexy, raw and so sarcastic, I wanted more.

I cried my eyes out

I’ll keep this short.

Isla, frustrated me to no end in this one.
And it hurt, reading the last chapters, my favorite character dying, it shattered me, broke my heart. And I’m still crying as I type this. And even tho I was so mad with Isla, most of the time, I love her so much and I can’t wait to dive into Sophie’s book.

The Scooby Gang are back

Eternity’s Awakening is book three in Anne Malcom’s The Vein Chronicles series. This book continues on from Deathless, so it’s highly recommended that Fatal Harmony and Deathless are read prior to this, also it wouldn’t hurt to have read Faults In Fate (Sophie & Conall’s novella) before as well.

Now it’s taken me a few days to write this review as I am still reeling from it. There is soooo much happening and it’s a lot to process and recover from. But I am so looking forward to what’s to come next in this series.

The sassy, immature, narcissistic, kicka** Vampire Isla and her Scooby Gang are back to fight the rebellion to imprison humankind with More death, destruction, betrayal and impeccable sense of fashion. I just love the characters in this book, they are all special and loved in their own unique was, especially the ones that are lost, they will be missed and cherished the most. But Isla and Thorne continue to grow and push the boundaries, their bond and connection is one in a million. I do hope that Isla will eventually learn to stop trying to push Thorne away as he is only looking out for her, and as he continues to tell her it’s not cause she is helpless, it’s cause he is helpless without her.

This book had me going through a roller coaster of emotions, I was laughing, crying, screaming and shocked af. I think my husband was on the verge of locking me in a padded cell lol, with all the different moods I went through while reading. But I channeled Isla and was able to finish reading with no padded room.

I really liked the way this book was structured. Because it has a very jarring start, where you don't really understand what the hell is happening and then the narrative kind of takes you back a few weeks to explain how we came to be where we were. I liked that a lot.
The story was still insanely entertaining and easy to read, but I wasn't as into it as I hoped to be. And least not in the first part of it. I really did not like the way both Isla and Thorne were portrayed here. Isla happened to be more annoying than usual and her constant monologue would jut get on my nerves a lot. While Thorne was the guys who was just an extra in the Isla story - he was always standing toward the back, grunting and grinding his teeth, growling at everyone. “His jaw ticked. I wondered if he was going to get tired from directing all the testosterone all over the apartment.”
Great character building, right?
But then, hallway through it was like some switch has been turned and the story finally evened out to what I expected it to be and the characters finally got their personality back to them, thank the gods. And I was engaged again and able to follow the plot. And, honestly, I jut couldn't tear myself away from the book.
“And then the killing began”
The shit that happended in this story is unbelievable and something that is definitely not easy to wrap your head around. And it's not even the end of it yet, we are only gearing up for the real deal. I cannot wait to see how the characters are going to react to all the revelations that are waiting for them in the next book. This is gonna be beyond good.

Holy craziness!!!!!

I know it took me way too long to read this series but dang I was so focused on the whole picture that I started to dream about the scenes! I would wake up and couldn’t wait to freaking find out what was happening or if my theories turned out to be true.

FYI: No way..... EVER would I be able to predict what Anne’s mind turned these stories into, let alone the emotional rollercoaster this book took you onto.

As much as I love Isla.... I am a freaking FAN of Sophie’s!!! I love everything about this awesome witch and Isla was getting super annoying and I wanted to slap her so many times!!

My new favorites of the series turned out to be Scott and Lucille, and boy does that little girl have my heart!! She is such a badass of her own!

So much more blood is spilled in this book but I still had hope for things to happen and when they did happen I actually thought Anne was going to write that they woke up from a coma and it was going to paint such a different picture than the one she painted for us in the end! So many amazing things happened in this book but are all spoilers if I tell you and you NEED to read this series!!!

I haven’t actually read a paranormal read in a really long time and I am so glad I took a chance because the violence, the sex, the drama, and even some laughable moments were worth all the time in the world to read these books!!!

I can’t wait to see what happens next since I got a glimpse of the next book and I nearly fell off my treadmill!!!! Thank you for writing such epic stuff Anne and I apologize for the delay in my reviews!!

Wow, Ms. Anne Malcom… you wanted to drive us all crazy, didn’t you? I fell head over heels for this story. The uprising was just perfect and I was all pumped up and just adoring every word… but Isla, Isla I wanted to beat several times. I mean, lucky for her she would totally take me in a street fight and she has that whole fang thing going for her! It shocks me that I love his series so much… I don’t even really read paranormal books but there’s something about this cast of characters. I love them all and if I don’t, I hate them viciously!

Ms. Malcom has got to be at the top of her game! She creates such fascinating characters that you love dearly and others that you hate just as much… but you love to hate them! It’s quite the conundrum! Ms. Malcom has a rich way of telling stories. Her books are always so full of descriptions and oozes with sex appeal! I did think this was the last of The Vein Chronicles series but it looks like we’ll have at least one more. No matter how it goes… I’ll continue to track this series and this author.

I received an ARC of this book with the hope that I would leave an Unbiased Opinion. I was not required to leave a review, positive or otherwise, and my opinions are just that... my opinions.

Fast paced, witty, funny, tense, full of all of the snark. This book is so many things and it does it so well. It has everything from laugh out loud moments to moments so tense you will be on the edge of your seat. You will laugh, smirk, be tempted to throw your e-reading device of choice. Anne Malcom really hit a home run on this one. This series has been wonderful from the beginning with sassy and snarky female characters that you will want to be. This book we see some amazing character development for Isla. The best in the series. It is wonderful to read with the authors typical flare for writing not only emotionally descriptive prose but being able to do so and draw out not only emotions from the reader but also make you laugh and smile at the same time.

This is my favourite vampire PNR series as it isn't often you get the female lead being the vampire. It is also packed to the gills with pop culture references and more sassy snark than your average book. I always feel empowered as woman when I read a great female lead like there is in this book.

This book really feels like it has it all. Touching moments, funny moments and moments so frustrating to the reader you want to scream. The best kind of emotional rollercoaster to go on. I completely recommend this series and this book even if PNR isn't usually your thing because I am certain you will fall in love with the characters as much as I have.

I see that some of the reviewers here have issues with Isla - and yeah, she can be a bit much at times, but it's also clear that she's evolving in some ways. Will she ever take things as seriously as she perhaps should? Maybe not, but then again, she is a not-entirely-sane immortal being who's been around for 500 years. I imagine that a lot of serious shit probably starts to roll off one's back after a couple centuries of life, and with the way her first Awakening happened... she's got a head full of demons, and only began reevaluating her life once she met Thorne. It really hasn't been that long since then.

Personally, I'd like to thank Anne Malcom for giving me a protagonist within the fantasy/paranormal genre that isn't a twenty-something year old picture of innocence who's never kissed a boy or thrown a punch. I like my heroines dangerous and unpredictable (and maybe a little insane) - what can I say. I'm sick of picking up books where the chick lets her man dictate everywhere she goes and everything she does for her "protection". Thorne may do everything he can to keep Isla safe, but she doesn't bow down to his demands, and in the end he respects her for it despite the frustration. Basically - I want more! Give me book four! Or a novella! Pssssst. Rick and Helen. Hint hint.
