I picked up this book on the recommendation of my supervision mentor-coach as I was looking to improve my somatic awareness, and to be better able to discuss mental and physical connections when coaching and supervising.

It shouldn't have taken an entire month to read this book, but priorities changed midway and suddenly the usefulness reduced. That said, there was a lot in this tome that spoke to me. Physically I am strong. I have reasonable resilience and endurance. However, my flexibility, physically, is poor, and this mirrors as a character trait – change my brunch to lunch and I will struggle with the requirement to re-reach and adjust.

The parallels between what our bodies can do and what we then mentally feel able to rise to are clear. This book has quite a lot of neuroscience packed in but at times went a little beyond the realm of science; encouraging the reader to use visualisation to release neurotransmitters and chemicals to ‘hack’ your body – con yourself into optimism etc. That was a little too ‘woo woo’ for me, but the core principles stand firm, and I’m not going to argue with the expertise of the authors who have coached so many professionals in developing their presence and mental capabilities through physical exercises and habit stacking.

I applied some of the thinking in this book to a coaching assignment with extremely satisfying results, so there’s definitely value in these pages. The science sometimes hovers to the limit of my understanding, but the book is largely accessible with lots of practical suggestions and exercises for putting the principles into practice.

Some good, some bad and some average parts in this book.

The premise is interesting: understanding hormones
that impact performance and well being, how these can be influenced consciously, how planning your day being aware of how you sleep, eat, breathe and exercise will all impact how you feel, how you perform, how are you can truly live the fullest life possible.

The book is full of life hacks and practical tips that will allow you to be more aware of all the above mentioned things. For me the book was not fully convincing because some of these tips were either too prescriptive or sometimes even hard to believe despite the references to science being mentioned.

Maybe that is because in addition to a book it also felt very much like a promo item for their own company.

However I think everyone will take one or two practical tips from this book that they can apply easily into their lives, to become more aware of how to function optimally. The parts you don’t like you can simply read through fast optimizing what you get out of this book.

In this book, Claire and Patricia did good job in describing how the combination of selected hormones play the roles in our mental strength, flexibility, resilience, and endurance. It is interesting research where author give wonderful examples how small adjustments in our physical activities (book called in life hacks) can make the difference. Truly speaking it is not a typical book to read, it is more like a manual with number of life hacks and exercises those you need to try to experience it. I tried some of them and enjoyed it so far, planning to refer this manual and try more in future.
