If you’ve had enough of living in defeat, it’s time to find renewed strength and claim the promises of God’s Word to overcome life’s greatest threats.
Dr. David Jeremiah, founder of Turning Point Radio and Television Ministries and senior pastor of Shadow Mountain Community Church, felt God’s calling on his life at a very early age. Born February 13, 1941 in Toledo, Ohio, Dr. Jeremiah was raised in a family deeply committed to ministry. At the age of eleven, Dr. Jeremiah and his family moved to Dayton, Ohio where his father, Dr. James T. Jeremiah, was the Pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church, and in 1953 became the President of Cedarville College in Cedarville, Ohio.
As Dr. Jeremiah was sensitive to God’s leading in his life, he followed in his father’s footsteps. In 1963, Dr. Jeremiah received a Bachelor of Arts from Cedarville College. In that same year, Dr. Jeremiah married his college sweetheart, Donna Thompson who also was attending Cedarville College as a business major. He went on to earn a Masters degree in Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary in 1967. He completed additional graduate work at Grace University and was granted the Doctor of Divinity degree from Cedarville College in 1981.
In 1969, Dr. Jeremiah began Blackhawk Baptist Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and developed a Christian school grades K through 12. In the 12 years he served as pastor, Blackhawk Baptist Church grew from 7 families to 1300 members. He also launched The Bible Hour television program.
Dr. Jeremiah heeded God’s call, and in 1981 he and his family moved to California where he became the senior pastor of Scott Memorial Baptist Church, now Shadow Mountain Community Church.
Shadow Mountain Community Church is one of the largest churches in San Diego County. It is also the home of Southern California Seminary and Christian Unified Schools.
As Dr. Jeremiah began his ministry at Shadow Mountain, he felt God’s calling to continue the broadcast ministry he started in Fort Wayne. In 1982, Turning Point Ministries became a reality.
Today, Turning Point's 30-minute radio program is heard nationally and internationally on over 1800 stations and translator/satellators. In recognition of Dr. Jeremiah’s commitment to teaching the Word of God, he received the Broadcaster of the Year Award in 1999 from the National Religious Broadcasters (NRB), in August 2002, received the Award of Merit from the Western Chapter of National Religious Broadcasters for Excellence in Broadcasting and Faithfulness in Service, and in 2006 Turning Point received the Best Radio Teaching Program Award. Dr. Jeremiah has served on the Board of Directors for the NRB since 1996.
Turning Point launched a television program in 1982 in San Diego and went nationwide in 2000. Now seen around the world through cable and satellite technology, as well as on terrestrial stations all across the United States, conservative estimates suggest that close to 200 million homes around the world have access to Dr. Jeremiah's Bible teaching each week. Turning Point Television offers a half-hour Bible study message and a full hour worship service with the same great preaching. Carried on several national and international networks such as TBN, ION, and INSP, Turning Point Television has most recently been added to Middle East TV Network and BET, the Black Entertainment Network.
Dr. Jeremiah is a sought-after conference speaker for organizations around the country. He frequently speaks at Cedarville College, Dallas Theological Seminary, Moody Bible Institute, Billy Graham Training Center, Phil Waldrep’s Senior Adult Celebrations and numerous NFL, NBA and Baseball chapels.
Along with his speaking schedule around the country, Dr. Jeremiah also finds time to fulfill another passion in his life, writing. His books are always gripping and right to the point. Some of his books include Escape the Coming Night, The Power of Encouragement, What the Bible Says About Angels, Prayer The Great Adventure, which brought him The Gold Medallion Award in 1998, God In You, Gifts from God
A helpful, straightforward book. Here are my favorite quotes: As members of God’s kingdom, we’re called to conquer the barriers between who we are and who God wants us to be. Our goal is to “come over” from where we are today, and to flourish as the person God made us to be.
One of the best, and shortest, philosophies for living I know of is this: “Do the next right thing.”
It’s all right to talk to God about your problems.
But sometimes you need to talk to your problems about God. Preach the goodness of God to them. Prophesy the promises of God to them. Proclaim the victory of the cross to them.
Mark Batterson encourages us to “think of worry as a prayer alarm. Every time it goes off, you put it to prayer.”
Martin Luther wrote, “Pray, and let God worry.”
“It is absolutely right to believe in miracles; it is absolutely wrong to schedule them.”
We should pray like a salesman with his foot wedged in the door opening, like a wrestler who has his opponent in a headlock.” Yancey concluded by saying, “Raise your voice, Jesus’ story implies. Strive on, like the shameless neighbor in the middle of the night. Keep pounding the door.”
Dr. David Jeremiah is one of my favorite Preacher/Teachers to watch on TV. I have read some of his previous books and found them very helpful. Therefore, I was very excited when OVERCOMER was released.
This is a book I will reread several times. I have highlighted so many passages, it looks as if my entire book is highlighted. Dr. Jeremiah has taken one of my favorite passages (Ephesians 6:10-18). With his spiritual knowledge and love of scripture he explains Paul's letter to the church in Ephesus. If you have wondered about the armor or weapons listed and their uses, you will want to read this book. We do not have to be defeated. God has given us all we need to fight our battles. It's time that we claim the promises in God's word. Just as the title says, we can be OVERCOMERS. Dr. Jeremiah, as he tells in his book, has faced some life changing obstacles, having Hodgkin Lymphoma and now being cancer free. His book “When Your World Falls Apart” was a big help and so encouraging when my husband got his diagnoses. I can not say enough about OVERCOMER. I feel every Christian should read this book. I believe it would make a wonderful gift.
I was given a copy of this book by Thomas Nelson through NetGalleys. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.
You will overcome the enemy this I know, because the bible tells me so.
I found this book a little difficult too get into, the beginning was not compelling and I found myself doing a bit of hard work to keep going. I am glad I did because once the author got into his stride I found this book to be a powerful motivation to pray effectively.
The author isn’t merely providing a list of things you should be doing as a Christian, its a powerful motivation to get practical and walk the talk underpinned by a powerful prayer life.
You will overcome the enemy this I know, because the bible tells me so.
Dr. Jeremiah reminds us that when Satan attacks we may not have time to google an answer or phone a friend for spiritual advice. We must be prepared. Based on Ephesians 6:10-18, Dr. Jeremiah says, "Satan wants to keep you from God’s strength. He’s after your honesty, your heart and your righteous life. He wants to fill you with anxiety and with doubt. He longs to confuse your mind. He loves to tempt you to sin. He hates it when you pray." Each chapter contains stories of men and women who overcame adversities. Some of those mentioned are some of my favorites: King David, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and Desmond Doss. There are also voices from today including Chip Ingram, Max Lucado, and John MacArthur. The titles of the chapters are: Overcomer Overcoming Weakness with Strength Overcoming Falsehood with Truth Overcoming Evil with Good Overcoming Anxiety with Peace Overcoming Fear with Faith Overcoming Confusion with Wisdom Overcoming Temptation with Scripture Overcoming Everything with Prayer Overcoming Death with Life
That pretty much covers everything we need to overcome, don’t you think?
Subsections Each chapter has smaller subsections. One of my favorites is the chapter on Truth. The subsections for it are titled, A World of Lies The Belt of Truth What is Truth? God is Truth We Overcome Falsehood by Seeking the Truth Study the Truth Submit to the Truth We Overcome Falsehood by Speaking the Truth Overcomers Speak the Truth Lovingly We Overcome Falsehood by Living the Truth It Takes Confession to Live the Truth It Takes Correction to Live the Truth Turn Up the Volume on Truth
There are 205 pages in this hardcover book, not counting the additional notes in the back. I’ve been telling my husband how amazed I am to discover something valuable on almost every page. I guess I’ve intrigued him because he’s reading the book now. Although a Bible study has been made to go along with the book, the book itself is not set up as a Bible study. However, almost every page contains one or more scripture. I’m not talking about a light mention either. It’s discussed in detail and in an easy-to-understand way. Dr. Jeremiah also shares interesting information about biblical times. One example he uses when discussing David and Goliath, is about the ancient armies and their three kinds of warriors: the cavalry, the infantry, and the slingers. He includes comments from experts such as those from a ballistics expert with the Israeli Defense Forces who did tests showing how a stone could easily knock down a person. I find side notes like this interesting and educational. Even though he’s published numerous books, this is the first book I’ve read written by Dr. David Jeremiah. I find Overcomer to be encouraging and helpful to spiritual growth. The content is presented in a fresh way. My husband is reading it now. When he finishes it, I plan to give it to my teenager to read. And then, I want to read it again. I highly recommend it. I received a free book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.
"Overcomer " by David Jeremiah is an outstanding book. This book has a study guide , DVDs to go with the book for more explanations. David Jeremiah is a wonderful pastor in San Diego. His radio program and daily devotional is called turning point. Each chapter has rich insights for the Christian life. He writes with Ephesians 6 as his focus. He writes in a very personal and practical style. This book has rich tools for the Christian life. He give the Christian 8 ways for unstoppable strength, unmovable faith and unbelievable power. His 8 ways are : overcoming weakness with strength, overcoming falsehood with truth, overcoming evil with good, overcoming fear with faith, overcoming confusion with wisdom, overcoming temptation with scripture, overcoming everything with prayer, and overcoming everything with life. He uses part of the armor to explain each part of the 8 ways. He wants the Christian to use the armor of God every day since we are in a battle. We must use the helmet to protect all the parts of the head the can lead to battle from satan. We need to watch and be on guard for what enters our mind since our thoughts are so important for our success as a Christian. We are to watch that we tell the truth and not lie by keeping the word as the sword of the spirit active in our heart and mind and wear the breast plate of truth. . We need to wear the heavy shoes on the gospel of peace to protect our feet . He suggests we live with an attitude of prayer daily and moment by moment. He says , " Prayer is the overarching key to being an overcomer." He said we need to look for triggers in our day that will remind us to pray each day often.. He reminds us we lose God's perspective when we focus on our worries. In each chapter David puts lots of examples of people and their situations and shows how they have overcome. For example , He said that Dietrich Bonhoeffer leaned on God so much while He was in prison that He had a peace. This peace was in every circumstance He was in and He was close to God. He was martyred for his faith.. He is a real example for our lives. This book is very inspiring. I think it would be excellent for any Christian. It is a book you can reread and still find good applications for your life. Thank you for Thomas Nelson for allowing me to read and review this book through netgalley. I appreciate this opportunity.
This is what I would consider a perfect book of Christian knowledge and wisdom. Truly a blessed book of complete sound biblical doctrine that will enrich your walk and life with God the Father and Christ Jesus the Son. Overcomer is a book rich with stories of faith and bible truths that lead the reader down a path of perfected knowledge.
Possibly one of the best books I have read on Faith and the glory of Jesus Christ and the understanding and knowledge of what it all means. Dr. David Jeremiah is truly a gifted soul of Christ Jesus. This is a book I highly recommend and one that should be read and explored to grow and enrich your faith walk with Christ Jesus. This would make a perfect gift for any Christian and especially non-Christian so that they may understand and come to terms with the glory of God the Father in Heaven.
There are so many wonderful in-depth knowledges of the bible that the pages become such a knowledge that you the reader can’t help but want to turn the page to be thoroughly educated and enriched with the glory that the Dr. talks about, preaches and explores in vivid detail.
Overcomer is what I consider a must read book for anyone. It’s a book that truly transcends off the pages and gives the soul a beautiful understanding of Christ Jesus and the glory of God.
One of my favorite parts of the book is the individual stories of certain people who are considered Overcomers. Those who’s Faith was strong and who clung to truth, righteousness and faith during trying times.
Overcomer is a book that every booklover should have. It’s a book that leaves a lasting beauty. It enriches every part of your life and most of all blesses it with the wonderful journey of Jesus Christ and the Glory of God in heaven.
Would I Return to it Again: Absolutely? I have already reread many parts of the book and highlighted and used many wonderful sayings from the book on my Twitter and Facebook feed. It’s a book that demands to be reread repeatedly.
Would I Recommend: Absolutely in a heartbeat. Any one, Christian and non-Christian should read this book it will totally change you and enrich you and truly leaves a lasting impression upon your mind, soul and heart.
Four Final Words: Inspiring. Brilliant. Thought provoking.
I started this book a while ago, but the reason it's taken so long to read is because there is so much helpful information in every chapter, that I needed time to process it. After reading a couple of chapters, I actually went back and started again, just reading a chunk at a time as part of my devotions.
The book starts with the example of King David as a Biblical example of an overcomer. The next eight chapters then cover 8 issues in which we can be overcomers: overcoming weakness with strength, falsehood with truth, evil with good, anxiety with peace, fear with faith, confusion with wisdom, temptation with scripture and everything with prayer. The final chapter looks at how we can lead a meaningful life through the resurrection power that comes from Christ.
Although the author of course gives scriptures and talks about Biblical principles, I especially liked all the true stories and anecdotes used to illustrate points. According to the acknowledgements section, there are over 100 of these. Those stories really brought it to life, so I never felt I was reading a theological treatise. It's a lot easier to identify with the real stories of others, who have the same weaknesses as us. It's a book I think I could dip back into again and again, and I would like to get hold of the study guide.
Overcomer is a book wrote by well known pastor and preacher Dr. David Jeremiah. Dr. Jeremiah starts this book out with the story of a great overcomer, David, and his battle with Goliath. He describes what it looks like to be a great overcomer with God. Next, he goes on to describe how to become an overcomer by using the armor of God, as described in Ephesians 6. He takes us through each piece of armor; belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, shield of faith, shoes of peace, helmet of salvation, sword of the spirit, and prayer. Dr. Jeremiah finishes by discussing the greatest overcomer of all, Jesus Christ. This book has many sound biblical points in it that will help to develop a closer relationship and understanding of God. There were many times when I felt God gently tap me on the shoulder and quietly say “pay attention here, you need this”. This is a book that every Christian should have in her/his library, and reference often. I received a free copy of this book, from the publisher Thomas Nelson, via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
is an uplifting and practical guide for Christians facing life’s challenges. Drawing from Ephesians 6, Jeremiah explores the armor of God, offering biblical insights and actionable steps to help believers stand firm in their faith. Each chapter focuses on overcoming struggles like fear, doubt, and temptation, while leaning on God’s promises and strength. Written with clarity and compassion, Overcomer is an empowering resource for anyone seeking to live a victorious, Christ-centered life.
Overcomer 8 Ways to Live a Life of Unstoppable Strength, Unmovable Faith, and Unbelievable Power by Dr. David Jeremiah Thomas Nelson--W Publishing Thomas Nelson Christian , Religion & Spirituality Pub Date 02 Oct 2018 I am reviewing Overcomer through Thomas Nelson and Netgalley:
We live in a time of great uncertainty. The Bible Promises we are created to enjoy living a life of freedom, in times when the world around us is filled with great darkness. God created us to be overcomers conquering the greatest obstacles that are in our lives.
In this book David Jeremiah offers his insights on one of the most quoted but least understood passages of the Bible, the apostle Paul's admonition to the Ephesians to take up the armor of God. He explores the powerful relevance of the Spiritual armor as an important tool each day as we face the challenges of our lives and our times.
If you've had enough living in defeat this book will help you to renew your strength as you claim the promises of God's word!
My sister-in-law lent me this book to read as our whole family is going through a rough time dealing with issues with our elderly Mother.
The stress and anxiety I have been feeling was becoming more than I could handle.
I read this book and immediately felt myself become stronger. I felt myself learning how to turn my fears over to God and just believe that He will guide me through each day. I only need to trust in Him.
It was so well written and hit so many points that I struggle with on a daily basis.
I found many passages and scriptures that I can repeat to myself when I am feeling lost and weak.
This book is like an anchor for your soul.
If you find yourself just floating aimlessly or actually feeling like you may be sinking instead of swimming then this book can be your life raft.
As predicted, this Bible study is filled with decision theology that brings the reader to focus in on themselves—their feelings and experiences—rather than the external Word of God and what Christ has already done for you. To be sure, as Christians living out the sanctification of the Holy Spirit, we are certainly called to live holy lives, yet this holy living (active righteousness) flows from the passive righteousness (justification by faith) we receive from Christ. There are some places in the study guide that adequately calls the reader to focus on the external Word, but it all too often brings it down to what YOU are doing rather than what CHRIST is doing. There are a few useful practicalities throughout the study, but most of it is undergirded by the poor theology of the book, including but not limited to a lot of false allegorisations of Scripture.
Dr. Jeremiah is illustration heavy and he ties those illustrations to his points in his books. It should be noted for those that decry his books as "Our Daily Bread" or too heavy on prayer that he has softened in his later years. Earlier in his ministry he was a strong fundamentalist preacher and was a shouter. It was probably cancer that tempered his style and brought more humanity to his presentations. I have listened to his old sermons and to the sermons that match this book. The sermons, according to Jeremiah, were all written word for word and presented as such. It can be seen clearly in the book when you have seen the sermon. The books are helpful reference and can be recalled easily and underlined in a way that a sermon cannot. This book on the armor is a valuable asset for the maturing and mature Christian.
In “Overcomer: Finding New Strength in Claiming God’s Promises” Dr. Jeremiah explores the relevance of apostle Paul’s direction to put on the spiritual armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18) when confronting our trials and problems. We can then live daily with “unstoppable strength, unmovable faith and unbelievable power.”
With his strength of faith, and a clear, conversational writing style that draws you in as well as with his personal insights Dr. Jeremiah gives each one of us the tools that believers can use to walk a life as an “Overcomer”.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it highly. Already I have passed it on to someone floundering in their walk of faith and I'm praying it will bring them hope and renewal.
I have been greatly anticipating the launch of this book. David Jeremiah is a highly esteemed pastor, author and teacher of The Word. This latest book provides key examples of those who have faced incredible odds (David, Paul, etc.) and overcame them. How they did so is explained as well as how we, too, can apply the same to our lives as well. Written in the same easy to understand manner that is so typical of Dr. Jeremiah's books, this is ideal for new believers and a source of renewal for 'seasoned believers'. This is a book that will become part of my permanent collection and one that will be read and reread. I received an Advance Review Copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
You will no doubt recognize the engaging, practical style of this latest book from Dr. David Jeremiah. Unpacking the Spiritual Armor found in Ephesians 6, Dr. Jeremiah does anything but rehash the same old, same old in this work. Showing how each piece of the armor was understood back in their day and then masterly and craftily drawing parallels to our day, Dr. Jeremiah helps the reader become more prepared for the battle that is already raging. Including a chapter on prayer, this work could be used in a basic discipleship setting, book group, or even a Church structured environment. It is worth the read.
Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
Loved the format--the stories. They really helped me relate to the points. Coincidentally, this book called to me from the shelf at Walmart. I almost never buy books from Walmart. I found areas immediately relevant to what I was going through in my life now, so that was highly serendipitous--meant to be, in other words. The book had many moving moments, and I learned a lot from other sections, and it convinced me to change some of my behaviors regarding prayer and Bible study. Definitely worth a read for any Christian seeking motivation.
3.5 stars Read in conjunction with my church's sermon and small group series. Interesting and insightful interpretation and application of the spiritual armor described in Ephesians 6. I got a little too much of a convenient, anecdotal-Our-Daily-Bread vibe (I'm always wanting to check the citations for context) from this book than I personally care for, but that's just my deal. My small group independently did Priscilla Shirer's study on this subject last fall, which I enjoyed, and I may have to revisit it to compare and contrast the approaches.
An encouraging book. Would be great for a new believer. For the more mature believer in Jesus, there's not a lot new. But it is organized in a new way. Which makes it interesting to read.
I did buy the book for a friend recently diagnosed with cancer and I believe it will encourage her, even though she has walked with Jesus for decades.
I got the Super 8 Overcomer cards with the book when I ordered (from the author/ministry). They are bigger than a bookmark, plastic, colorful, and summarize each Overcomer chapter. I find those fun to have.
I received an ARC copy of this through NetGalley. This book is a fantastic resource for anyone seeking to grow in their faith, anyone who is struggling, and so forth. I especially liked how Dr. Jeremiah included events from this year and how the many tensions we face in life currently affect our relationship with God. A 21st century book intertwined with tradition backed by the Bible. A definite must-read!
This highly engaging, thought provoking work is filled with encouragement and practical applications of the greatest story ever told. We are saved by Christ for a purpose. Daily we have the opportunity to be the gospel story the rest of the world reads, by grasping our identities as over-comers. If you are feeling discouraged or down heartened I recommend this book. It is full of reminders of the victory that is ours in Jesus Christ.
Dr. Jeremiah has put together a practical list of common struggles-anxiety, fear, lies, etc.-that we all face. What I like best is that he doesn't just name the problems he names the solutions. He implements the different pieces of spiritual armor as listed in Ephesians 6 but intermingles very real stories that illustrate each topic in real life. The Bible has an answer to each problem that plagues us and this book is a great place to get focused on that answer.
This book was the companion book for the series about Overcoming that Dr. David Jeremiah hosted on TV and through his wonderful app, Turning Point Ministries, available on any platform. If you are struggling and need to overcome, then this book is the one for you. Easy to read and implement the strategies presented therein. You won't regret reading any of Dr. Jeremiah's books. If you are looking for a closer relationship with God, then Dr. J will help you to accomplish that.
This is an encouraging book. It is filled with stories of people who have overcome difficulties ranging from anxiety to temptation. Jeremiah backs up his thoughts with scripture. I will say at first I was hesitant because I was afraid he would make people who need more than just an attitude/heart change ( medication, for example) feel guilty, but he does not. He actually states that may be necessary and is a form of help.
Probably my most marked up book this year. The book uses incredible stories to relay what David Jeremiah’s trying to get across. Not a lot of new information but just really well put together. There were several chapters that stood out to me so much that I will definitely reference it from time to time.
This is a wonderful book that is easy to read and understand. Author David Jeremiah uses scripture, facts, and true stories to verify the biblical truth that Jesus is real, His death and resurrection are real and He is our savior. He alone is the way to heaven and everlasting life.
