The number of people coming out as transgender continues to rise, and this book shows healthcare and medical practitioners how to deliver excellent primary and secondary care to gender diverse patients. This guide provides accessible and practical advice on tailoring the social and ethical aspects of practice to the needs of each individual. Beyond setting out how clinical procedures should work for gender reassignment, it explains how to use language and pronouns in a respectful way, provides information on transgender services and resources, and offers insights into the challenges commonly faced by transgender people in both medical and social contexts. Based on cutting edge research and the lived experience of the author as a non-binary person, this is essential reading for all those working to meet the needs of transgender people in healthcare settings.
At last, a book that fulfils the very real need among medical practitioners, faced with growing numbers of transgender or non-binary service users in everyday practice. This is a very comprehensive volume, packed with up-to-date advice from a clinical expert. A must-have on every shelf.
A fantastic, detailed, yet succinct summary of how healthcare practitioners can provide better, safer care for transgender and non-binary individuals. From administrative recommendations around name-changes to hormone replacement therapy to preventative medicine in individuals who have transitioned, this book is a great resource for physicians, nurses, and surgeons, as well as for trans and non-binary individuals looking for help in navigating the healthcare system. The book covers care across the lifespan, and aims to help regular practitioners (not necessarily those specializing in gender-specific care) feel confident in their abilities to provide safer care to patients of all gender identities.
Just a quick note that there are sections of this book that are very specific to residents of the United Kingdom, including information about individual gender identity clinics. As a Canadian, this material wasn’t necessarily relevant to me, but the majority of the book had very applicable info, suggestions and recommendations.
A great basic review of transgender health. Would recommend to students or new practictioners as a resource Written from a UK perspective so some of the approaches that are based on systems may not be applicable to other practices - however are helpful in thinking about other ways services are delived. The medication informaiton also expanded my ideas - although some are options not available in canada it helped to expand my ideas of what might be possible.
A fascinating, well-written, accessible and important book that brings together all of the most up-to-date research and best practice in transgender and non-binary healthcare. It is useful for practitioners to enable them to offer support to trans and non-binary people and for lay people to know what their options are and to ensure that know what to expect. Highly recommended.
This is a really clear and up-to-date overview of various aspects of UK-based trans healthcare which gives information about terminology, processes, and what options are available to patients and their GPs. Thoroughly recommend as an introductory text.
