The City of Light, the Capital of Romance, the cultural capital of the Western world, Paris is a city of intellect, sensuality and historical legacy. It is the birthplace of countless artistic and philosophical movements – from Impressionism to Cubism to Existentialism – and the center of gourmet cuisine and home to a vibrant nightlife. This beautiful volume captures the vitality and sensuality of Paris with more than one hundred stunning, full-color photographs and lyrical text weaves past and present into a delightful narrative, providing a dynamic view of an equally dynamic city.
Essentially a coffee table book, this is worth owning for the photographs, which are intimate and surprising. The subjects are more likely to be a hidden corner you'd like to find by accident than the typical postcard shots of Paris. There is enough history and context given in the text to appreciate the sights, but not so much that you become mired in the centuries. A few of the historical buildings mentioned in the text are not featured in the photographs, which is disappointing, and though the text emphasizes that Paris is about Les Parisiens, there are very few photographs that feature people. Still, the book makes me remember my trip fondly and makes me anxious to return.
After a brief, yet very informative, history of Paris, Judith Pasternak shares around 100 gorgeous photographs of The City of Light. Prepare yourself for a virtual feast for the eyes that evoked in me a variety of emotions. Some left me reminiscing about the time I was privileged to see those same sites in person, while the others fed an incessant desire to return so that I could see the rest for myself as well. A truly delightful read!
