* I received a copy of this in return for an honest review. *

There comes a time in every middle-aged man's life when he stops returning Little Tim Nextdoor's ball, when everyone needs to just get off his lawn, and when he ought to read these anger management books. For Old Man Koivu, the time is nigh...nay, now!

The problem for me is that these "reduce stress", "tone down tension," and "alleviate anger" books make me angry. So many of them are about mediation and such, which isn't bad, but they often try to set a mood that I find loopy and just plain silly. I don't want to do sloth aerobics to the sounds of whales making love while I rub essential oils on my inner child.

Luckily, Bill Andrews' slim book doesn't suggest any of that. He gives a few straight-forward, practical suggestions on dealing with the rise of anger in your life. He intentionally simplifies the techniques, demystifying psychologist's practices, to give the reader the basics. There are no clinical studies cited and I don't believe Andrews' qualifications are ever mentioned. The suggested methods of reducing anger are not ground breaking. The slimness of the volume means none of the various facets of the subject is dealt with in great depth. A quarter of the audiobook is devoted to promoting Andrews' other books. Having said all that, you still get some helpful suggestions. Calling this an "introduction to..." the topic would be more accurate, because I would recommend it as a first-step book.

I received my audiobook copy from the narrator Jeremy Basko through a site called Audio Boom. Basko's work on this is solid. His pacing and the tenor of his voice fit the topic.

Solid Advice

I've been trying to better manage my anger for longer than I want to say. I like the just ask a,question technique. Those that deal with anger management know things move quickly. Asking a question might provide the needed break. I'll give it a try.
