I'll admit, I got a wee bit creeped out reading this last night. The pictures are spot-on spooky.
I loved the format, easy to read for adults and children alike. Great photos, great quick facts that tell you where the place is and if it's open to the public. It only took me about 30-40 minutes to read. I think the fifth graders will enjoy it. Everyone likes a bit of spooky fun now and then.
Also, I do not plan on staying in any of those hotels that were mentioned. I don't know that I really believe in ghosts, but I do believe in the power of my highly imaginative brain to Freak. Me. Out.
A creepy little book. I wasn't entirely sure what audience to suggest this to, however. Each entry is accompanied by definitions for certain words used (suggesting this is a book for younger readers), but the content, which handles stories of suicide, murder, and gruesome deaths, insinuates that this might be better for older readers. As for me, I would suggest this as a title to kids in junior high, or even a mature 5th grader, who has graduated from Goosebumps and is looking for something scarier.
This book showed up in the mail today, and it couldn't have come at a more perfect time. I need a nonfiction ghost story for a reading challenge, and that's exactly what a friend mailed me for our All Hallows Read exchange. Plus it had pictures, was a quick read, and I don't think it will give me nightmares, so that's a plus.
never explains how their scary rating works. any one story isn't so scary that it's obvious either. descriptions such as "most haunted" graveyard in American don't seem to have enough info to determine why gets description.
The middle schooler in me gives this book five stars. The adult (that I suppose I am) gives it 3 stars. This book gives tiny snippets of information, and I do mean tiny. The pictures are amazing though. I would also like to know how the authors arrived at their “scary ratings”.
This was a great little read with lots of interesting information on haunted places across America. It would be fabulous to be able to visit many of them and experience them in person.
I enjoyed the pictures, but the storytelling didn't do anything to excite the imagination. Kids would be better off picking up a Goosebumps book to get their scare on. The places are ranked but what was used to derive the ranking is unknown. Beside the pictures, the only other thing it has going for it is it's organized geographically.
Poor story telling. Just say no.
