I don’t think this book was for me. The writing style was the issue... I think. It felt rushed and incomplete and at the same time super packed of useless and irrelevant information.

According to the others reviews it was supposed to be a romantic, easy read and instead it took a week long effort because I couldn’t be bother to waste my time on it and me and the story? we never clicked.

Jade Winters writes books that I like, buy and read. Not counting short stories, there are only three books by Winters not on my Goodreads lists.

Love's Knocking is book one in the Amber Hills series. Nikki Henderson expects a promotion to sales manager as she prepares for work at Cooper's Estate Agents. She doesn't know that her employer plans jobs cuts in order to keep from closing the business. Nikki receives the devastating news from an attractive business consultant hired to deliver it. Jo Parker makes a very lucrative income designing business plans that save employers by terminating employees. Usually, the newly fired just pick up their box of belongings and shuffle off the premises. Nikki leaves, but not before peppering her chickenshit boss and his hired gun with a few choice words.

Nikki decides to leave her unsustainable London lifestyle and move back home to her mother's Derbyshire B&B. The rest of the plot follows a predictable formula. Love's Knocking lacks originality and relies almost entirely on a preordained outcome. Rushing to connect a series of obvious dots, the plot pacing disallows for any meaningful character development. Jo and Nikki have absolutely no business sharing even a conversation, but Winters exerts a heavy hand with these characters. Always You is the second book in the Amber Hills series. I can't decide whether I want to reenter this romantic fantasy or not. I really like the way that Winters writes, but Love's Knocking didn't deserve an answer.

Loved It

This might be one of the most difficult reviews I have ever written, not because Love's Knocking is a bad book. In the contrary, it is one of my favorites from an author who is on my "must read" list.

I don't like to have spoilers in my reviews, but in this case I think I have to. You see, one of the two primary characters, Jo, is living the unthinkable; she is watching her dad slip away from Alzheimer disease. I lost my dad to this horrible disease twice. The first time was when he no longer knew who I was, and the second was when he died. There were two heart wrenching scenes having to do with her dad that left me in tears, and not just for a few minutes.

The book is not morose. It is a nice love story that happens between two women who, it would seem, are quite unlikely to be suited for each other. I love the way that Ms. Winters developed the two characters and their story.

I didn't hesitate to give this book a five star review. It is powerful deliciously sexy.

I was excited for the premise of this book, however the execution had me putting it down about half way. The characters while compelling had possibly the least realistic reactions to their situations.

SPOILER:

Nikki tells her dear family member that the girl upstairs literally fired her the job she put her life into and the family member tells her to put up with up and make her a sandwich.

That the girls can't stop thinking about each other? Why because they are both hot? There is no reasonable connection at all.

The parts about Jo's father were HEART BREAKING, but that's not why I was reading this book and it didn't feel as if the emotion really helped frame Jo's character or explain her job in any real way.

END SPOILER

I won't argue with anything below - it has all the ingredients of a class book, but somehow didn't quite make it. A little too pat. But I read it quickly & it did the job, so let's go for the second book and hope my bell is rung.

Love’s Knocking (Amber Hills Book 1) [Kindle Unlimited] — Jade Winters (38 chapters + Epilogue) January 10, 2020

What a fantastic lesbian romance from an equally excellent writer! I loved this book in that it deals with a thought-provoking story under the sexy bits, which is a refreshing change of pace from other books in this genre. I am glad to see this sort of plot cropping up in lesbian stories.

Nikki is in line for a promotion, when out of the blue, she meets Ms. Right. Then Ms. Right becomes Ms. Wrong when she fires her. What is Nikki to do? She heads home to her mom’s B&B out in the sticks and who shows up for a week-long getaway…Ms. Right/Wrong.

Madcap abounds with each of them wanting to tear each other’s clothes off (and the chemistry is very apparent) but thinking the other hates them. The background stories are that Nikki lost her dad, and Jo (the terminator) has a dad losing his battle to Dementia. [Aside: I know a thing or two about dementia. It seems victims don’t last very long. My dad died with less than two years.]

So, there is a severe illness issue in her family, but Ms. Winters weaves humor throughout this story. And Nikki is dealing with problems too as her mom drops lousy news on her lap. But, as it goes with Jade Winter books, everything turns out right as rain.

Love's Knocking is the first great first lesbian romance I have read of the year. Honestly, the experience that Jo’s dad gave her in his illness helped me in the recovery of mine (even though my dad’s death happened a few years back.) Sometimes, we need an outside POV.

Four stars.

Following any kind of loss, comes an opportunity second chances, and it struck me that there were many in Love's Knocking. Not just a second chance at love.
The more I read authors from other Countries, the more I feel connected to , not just their style of writing, but to the differences of cultures.
Both main characters not only get a second chance in love, and also in careers, but they also give others a chance to make a change. Winters' creates characters that are complex, like Nikki, whose life has just taken a turn she never expected, yet she reaches out to Malcolm and...well, I guess you'll have to read it to find out. I really enjoyed the dialogue between Jo and Gilly, before and after the video. (nope, that's all you get there, too). It is totally worth your time, Jade Winters is becoming another one of my favorite authors.

Nikki is a hardworking realtor in London who is laid off from her job suddenly when Jo is brought in as a business consultant and recommends the company downsize. Although Nikki is instantly attracted to Jo, she is seething with anger and blames Jo for the loss of her job. With few options, Nikki returns home to the country and the B&B her mother runs. Jo, who actually hates her job, is persuaded to take a week off and books a room at the same B&B.

This is a competently written romance with not too much left to the imagination. It's all in the journey to get there. I'm rating it a 4 because it is a step above the middling romances I would rate a 3.

I enjoyed reading a novel written in the dialect of it's British author. The use of foreign currency had me raking my mind for the equivalents since I spent my childhood in a British colony.
The story of parents (mothers) saying "I can't do this anymore" was refreshing; forcing their adult daughters to step into their own space and grow some more.
The writing was succinct in its descriptions; much appreciated.
The characters were written well. I could see Jo's haggard move through her caregiving life; draining. Nikki was bright even when angry.
A good read; wanting me to pick up the next segment.

Enemies to lovers romance

Nikki enters her boss’s office excepting a promotion but instead is made redundant by a downsizing consultant, When Jo books a week at a bed and breakfast do decompress from pressure from a fob she hates and being the care giver for her father, she doesn’t expect to run into Nikki again. Even with the hostility from Nikki, the feelings between them are hard to ignore. Will an unlikely alliance form or will they remain separated by anger. Great story.

Right place Wrong time..

Jo and Nikki met for all the wrong reasons. Gate brought them together not once but twice. Circumstances beyond their control place them in a position where they have to face their growing attraction. Will they give in? Or walk away from the best thing to ever happen to each of them? Read their story. You might fall in love with their characters. I sure did.

Caretakers should be given a medal and more recognition than they get now.

Jo's father has dementia and it gets worse. Jo is a head cutter also. Nikki is one of her casualties. Nikki's mum owns a B and B who has fallen on hard times. Malcolm was a cater who lost everything in his divorce. The three of them finally meet each other when Nikki almost loses the B and B. Follow them as they journey toward a different beginning. Enjoy!

This book made me experience different emotions. I hated Jo. I liked Nikki. I felt for Jo. I was happy for Nikki. I was sad for Jo and then most importantly happy for both of them. Once I get an Amazon voucher I will most likely but the next in the series. It's also nice that there wasn't any noticeable grammatical errors.

I always jump to read anything Jade writes. I was disappointed this read. I had a hard time following the plot or it just didn't catch my mind. Won't stop me from reading other books by this author .

This is my second book by this author. I enjoyed the book, I was not too into one of the characters. If you read the book, you will know whom I mean. But I didn't skip pages, I read it through. An easy read, will read more from this author.
