The Order #2.5

Twenty-One Arrow Salute

Rate this book
An archer’s heart is a hard target to hit…

Verhan Tŭrryés of Black Mountain is a handful.

Freshly enlisted in the Highland Regiment, he does all he can to steer clear of responsibility and commitment. Just not his cup of mead, that. Loose of tongue and even looser of morals, he rarely misses an opportunity to get into trouble—and into the other archers’ knickers, too.

In a unit composed almost entirely of Dark Elves, Hernan Seinnés, with his green eyes and auburn hair, is an outsider. When Verhan, up the creek again, is blackmailed into helping Hernan, he never expects to fall for him. But during the long hours spent training Hernan for the Honour Guard, feelings strike the Highlander right in the heart—and with the force of an arrow.

Unversed in relationships, Verhan finally plucks up enough courage to tell Hernan how he feels, only to drive the Asirhwӱnian away instead. If Verhan can swallow his pride, he might get one last chance to show Hernan what he means to him—and maybe this time he can hit the mark.

This was just delightful.I'm always excited by new stories from this Author and this definitely didn't disappoint. Kasia Bacon has created a truly captivating fantasy world in this, her Order Series.I'm in awe of how she can keep delivering short stories that pack a powerful punch from the world building to the highly likeable, charismatic characters...all delivered with great writing that just pulls you in from her first words.

Dark Elf,Verhan thought he was having quite a good day....admittedly doing something he shouldn't have been doing (you'll have to read it to find out...but it was quite hilarious).Unfortunately he was caught by his squad leader and his day is about to go downhill quickly. His punishment?....to train a fellow Archer in preparation for the Twenty-One Arrow Salute,in front of the Queen.

With his long auburn hair and green eyes Hernan stands out in a world of dark elves and cuts quite a lonely figure.Verhan is surprised to discover his preconceived opinion of Hernan was wrong and finds himself increasingly drawn to him.Never been one for any kind of commitment,he's most definitely a 'love them and leave them' elf...

Verhan is such an engaging character. His mouth and mind has no filter whatsoever and the wit and banter comes into full force from the Author through Verhan.

Due to their developing relationship there aren't any explicit sex scenes but that's not to say it isn't sexy because the mounting sexual tension is just right and that first kiss, between them was enough to keep me satisfied.I've got everything crossed that we get more of their story in upcoming books.

Highly Recommended.

Kasia is a master of fantasy DONE RIGHT and she hit the target dead center yet again with this slightly-lengthier read, so yay for me and kudos to Kasia.

We first met Ervyn's cousin Verhan in "The Highlander", who kind of personified the saying "young, dumb and full of cum".

He rarely took anything too seriously, always mouthed off, got himself into one brawl after another, and allowed his dick to lead him from one conquest to the next.

In short, he was young, still fairly immature, and had a reputation as a bit of an equal opportunity man-whore.

That was, until he was blackmailed into helping train an outsider, non-Highland elf from his unit to be center shooter of the Honour Guard in the annual Queen's Namesday celebration.

Enter Hernan Seinnés. As an elf raised in the capital city of Asirhwÿn, instead of in the Highlands, the rest of the Dark Elves in the Queen's Guard weren't willing to give him a chance to truly be one of them, so he was sullen and withdrawn.

Then he was chosen to be a member of the Queen's Honour Guard. When he'd never so much as held a mountain bow before.

(For a novice archer, mastering the mountain bow would be akin to yanking someone out of their automatic-transmission Toyota Camry and throwing them behind the wheel of a stick shift Ferrari. With the steering wheel on the opposite side of the car. In a hilly city. In traffic. Which was why Hernan so desperately needed Verhan's help.)

In this story, we got a great deal of longing and sexual tension, along with some snark and banter. Verhan was young, attracted to Hernan, and trying his best not to fuck up 'what might be' with the ginger city elf of his dreams.

Other than the stress of Hernan's training to be ready for his big day in front of the Queen and the *entire* city, including his disapproving father, the main drama in the story turned out to be a big misunderstanding.

Yes, I know what you're probably thinking. "God, I hate 'The Big Misunderstanding' in books." Trust me, I'm normally right there with you.

But with Verhan's complete lack of relationship experience, it actually worked here. I was jealous right alongside him, but would've probably stopped short of saying some of the immature, hurtful things that popped out of his mouth to hurt Hernan.

Thankfully, the misunderstanding was resolved fairly quickly, so I don't have to go and kill a bitch or five. Or rant like a crazed reviewer here.

#GurlDontGetMeGoing #TrustMeOnThis ;- )

The story's ending felt a bit abrupt, but I'm a greedy whore, always wanting a bit more; however, as this was a shorter story, it was sort of the way that I expected the end to wrap up.

I loved being in Verhan's conflicted, naive, horned-up mind, which was both refreshing and fun seeing him developing genuine feelings for someone (other than himself), so I'd highly recommend the story and give it around 4.5 stars.

There’s no doubt I love the Order universe, and though Verhan and Seinnes are no Ervyn and Lochan, this still brought a smile to my face.

The more I read about this fascinating world the more I want to know everyone's romantic story as well as all the little intricacies that bridge the complex relationship between elves, humans, barbarians, etc.

Bacon pretty much has solidified that I will read anything that she writes. She has quite the long list of to-do’s, and I impatiently await her next release!

OMG! Kasia, you sadistic minx!!! 😂 You did it again!!! 😱 I love this little piece of gem so much and I wanna throttle you right now for not writing it longer because now I’m dying for the full-length novel of Verhan and Hernan. 😭😂 Guys, this little novella is the epitome of sweet sweet slow-burn and young love and I devoured this in one sitting. 😎 There’s just something about the way Kasia Bacon tells her story that’s so compelling, intriguing and magical that we readers became addicted to her teasing little novellas. 😉 I’ll be frank, I wasn’t very hopeful and even a bit miffed when she announced that she was going to write a spin-off for Verhan the mischievous dark elf. 😒 At that time, I was already in loved and hooked on her two main couples, Ervyn and Lochan, and officer Käyru and Count Elly. I wanted their stories, not Verhan the playful elf who I didn’t care that much at the time but damnit because now I officially have a third couple who I’m dying to get a full story. 😭 Damn Kasia and her wickedly magical and addicting writing!!! 😍 The story itself in this book is simple, a troublesome elf being blackmailed into teaching a non-Highlander how to use their special bow and how to speak their dialect. But then a tentative friendship and so much more are blossomed between these two youths who couldn’t be any more different even if they try. 😁 One’s an aristocratic, posh, introverted and beautifully lithe while the other is strong, mischievous, extroverted and a bit of a man-whore. 😏 It was beautiful, enchanting and breathtaking to witness the budding love between these two young elves. I was just spellbound and I loved every second reading this novella. And now I want MORE! 😭 An extremely good job Kasia because you made me fell in love with these two and now I’m starved for more. 👏

Now I’m ready for The Scouts.

I love the amazing world that’s been created by this author and I love all the books and characters.
Now that might not sound like such a big deal but I’m a picky bitch and this doesn’t happen often, well not to me anyway.

This book is another true gem.
I love Verhan Tŭrryés, Ervyn’s cousin.

‘The only one who ignored my moodiness was my cousin Verhan. I tolerated his company without much hardship, despite the fact that his mouth rarely closed and he lived on gossip.’ (The Mutt)

“Verhan, are you flapping your tongue over there again?” (The Highlander)

Verhan is what we in Yorkshire refer to as “a character.” He’s funny, cute and has such a smart mouth.

“....Have you got no shame?”
“Not a great amount, no,” I admitted with calm.

Verhan is blackmailed into helping Hernan Seinnés and what starts as a chore soon turns into something else. It’s simply beautiful watching these two as they grow closer. Hernan is adorable but Verhan is a positive delight. While I find it impossible to pick my favourite book or character from this series Verhan is way up there.

Were we flirting? I couldn’t decide, since my concept of flirting involved a crude comment or two, coupled with grabbing body parts and hoping for the best.

This book is the longer than the others but it still wasn’t long enough. I suspect when it comes to this author and this series I’ll always say that.

Reread April 2021

I'd forgotten what a little whore Verhan was. I still wanted to kick his arse though lol.

Originally read June 2018

Verhan is in some trouble. See…he’s a bit of a slut really and is caught taking a gander at naked asses in the bathhouse. In order to avoid a beating he surely deserves, he begrudgingly agrees to train Hernan for the up coming Queen’s Namesday where he is to be the Center Shooter of the Guard of Honour. What he doesn’t expect is to start Feeling something for the other elf.

Well, Kasia Bacon does it again. I've said it before and I'll say it again...she's a goddess. She has a way with words that just pulls you in right away and this one was no different. It's a bit longer than her usual work and that makes it all the more sweeter.

Told entirely from Verhan's POV, I absolutely LOVED being in his head. He is hilarious and so out of touch with reality.
"Were we flirting? I couldn’t decide, since my concept of flirting involved a crude comment or two, coupled with grabbing body parts and hoping for the best."

But it was amazing to see him grown and change in his perception of Hernan and begin to feel things he's never felt before...to begin to change his behavior and ways of thinking about himself as well.
"I enjoyed spending time with the Asirhwÿnian. And yes, by the gods, I wanted to help him. I was either reaching maturity or contracting a personality disorder."

And while there's no sexy times in this one, the chemistry is there and you just know they're going to be good together.

This was a sweet and funny addition to The Order series. I'm definitely looking forward to more and hopefully it will include these two. They still have some growing to do.

Thank you, Kasia Bacon, for the advanced copy.

*sighs*

Kasia Bacon goes all New Adult on me and I just can’t stop my sighing. Good stuff.

*sighs a bit more*

So, yes NA greatness in The Order Universe and I loved it from the first sentence of the author’s note. I specially liked something Kasia said there, because it describes perfectly this book and its characters.

“You know that unique period when everything feels like a new challenge? When dramas resemble storms in a teacup, failures cut deep enough to gut, and every joy overwhelms?”

This is the story between Verhan Tūrryés and Hernan Seinnés and it’s kinda an elves sport romance with Verhan training Seinnés for the upcoming Twenty-One Arrow Salute, a very important festivity for our pointy ears guys.
Fantastically written as usual and full of sweet and humorous moments even with the typical short length of this series.

Verhan, the dark elf, Ervyn’s cousin. A huge discovery I must say. Terrific character. Super funny. Horny. Stubborn.

Seinnés. We met him in The Highlander, being Ervyn’s opponent in the try-outs to join the Scouts. Another great character. Sweet, lonely, different.

As in other books in this series prejudice, and discrimination are wonderfully addressed but maybe in this one is less subtle and more on your face kind of thing (and I’ve read about a blonde dark Elf and a mutt...) but I specially loved how our elves use Seinnés as the needed inclusive image because facade or not he deserved to shine.

Oh, and I love the cover.

Highly recommend!

I loved it! But I knew I would, because it's Kasia Bacon.

Again we got great writing, sweet and funny characters in such a fantastic world!

Verhan is a dark elf and he has the archery in his blood. So when he's being forced to train Hernan Seinnés, he doesn't expect the huge attraction between them.

This story is told from Verhan's POV. There are many archery details and so many endearing scenes. I absolutely adore the world building. Kasia Bacon is the master of words! I particularly loved the characters' honesty. They seem so real!

Great addition to the series. I can't wait to read more!!

She does it again. Okay this one is a bit longer than the usual 5k mark, but even so, the world building and scene setting is beyond brilliant.

Verhan is a loveable arse, arrogant as only a young man with the world at his feet can be, a study in contrasts to the quiet and shy Hernan.
When he's given the task of helping his fellow archer with an important task though, he finds there's a lot more to the other man.

Kasia imparts the usual snark and humour into this Order short story and she had me nearly choking on my tea at one point.

The opening to this one is epic as well, I was almost crying with laughter and I can't wait for the next visit to this wonderful world.

So...I shall unleash Verhan upon you very soon. Are you ready?

Things to expect:
-'snarkism'
- archery
- opposites attract trope
- slow burn of sorts
- swearing (there's a shocker)
- more on-page time with both characters than ever before
- NA vibe with some teenage style-drama
- lots of jibber-jabber.

Gah! Don't say you haven't been warned... :-)

I definitely feel like the odd woman out where this series is concerned. My GR friends seem to be in absolute awe, throwing 5-star ratings around left and right, but I’m just not feeling that same excitement and wonder. I like it, sure, but I’m not loving it... which makes me pretty dang sad.

I concur that this series is impressively written, with tremendous fantasy world-building and compelling characters, featuring couples that share tangible and heartfelt chemistry. All of this is great and worthwhile, I promise.

I guess my problem lies in the short length of these stories. For me, they feel like bonafide teasers, setting a great scene, making me feel and want...and then simply ending at the precise moment the story is actually taking off for me. Reading these books is like reading a great sample on Amazon and then being told I can’t buy the rest of the story once I’m done. I find it very frustrating, particularly because I seem to be the only one who even feels this way! Gah!

But don’t mind me, folks! I am the exception, not the rule, so chances are, should you decide to give this series a go—and you probably should, if you haven’t already—you will likely love it too! 🤞

Ms. Bacon has outdone herself again... This story IMO is the best of the series thus far. The writing is once again top-notch, with her prose just flowing across the page and at times reading like wonderful poetry. Her story is filled with plenty of humor, fun, suspense and one slutty archer finding love for the first time and stuck trying to figure out how it works. Verhan manages to be sweet and adorable on his bumbling, funny and sweet journey to love with Hernan. These two MCs were so beautifully drawn and fleshed out, they were impossible not to root for. I can't wait for the next "The Order" story; this author has such a talent at weaving complex stunning tales and I look forward to many more!

Kasia Bacon's writing is a pleasure to read. It's unique, fresh, witty, rich, real and just plain phenomenal. The punch she manages to pack into her novellas needs to be read to be believed, not once did I feel like I was reading a novella. Not once.

Twenty-One Arrow Salute is a fabulous addition to the fantasy world KB has built in The Order and I loved every word. However .... I was a teeny bit disappointed with the rushed ending. It definitely needed fleshing out a little more.

This universe is bloody addicting!!!

Perfect little book was (almost) perfect. The only thing that bugged me was... Hernan and Verhan? Seriously? I would have loved for the one or other varying vowel been thrown in so my muddled brain wouldn't have to do some somersaults in order to catch up. Oh, and the ending was a tad abrupt, but other than that... Loved it! :)

Twenty-One Arrow Salute is one delightfully enchanting story. I don't know how Kasia Bacon manages to pack so much punch into so few pages, but she really never misses a beat. Even at twice the length of the author's usual fare, not a single word is wasted.

Verhan Tŭrryés is one cheeky Dark Elf who tends to see more trouble than most - and all self-inflicted. He's young and acts it, meaning he has a tendency to think with his little head more than he does with his big head. I couldn't help but love him, though, and when he was blindsided by a fair outsider, Hernan Seinnés, I cheered.

I loved the humor and the snark and both MC's just worked for me. The Order universe is one I always want more of and Twenty-One Arrow Salute fit the bill splendidly!

This was looking to be my favorite in the series, except... Dude! Where is the ending?! I neeeed an epilogue at least. Damn! I needed those two to meet up after the official celebration and hug and kiss the hell out of each other. Aaand I really wanted to see them dance together at the Fete. *pouts* I feel betrayed.

Regardless of the ending, I feel this was really the best so far, even if this wasn't a steamy read.
Verhan is the kind of character I like to call "a little shit". He's cocky, always flirting with everyone, man or woman, doesn't matter. And he always finds himself in trouble. Hernan is quite the opposite: shy but proud, doesn't let his guard down. He's a sweetheart, with the constant blushing.

Through daily archery lessons, they slowly fall in love with each other. And that's it, simple as that. :)

Another good one...

4.5 stars (Because the ending came too soon lol)
Kasia Bacon just knows what she's doing. All her work, so far, has been shorts but my gosh does she know how to pack them. This one is no different. So much emotions in so little pages. I really enjoyed it and look forward to more of her work. Honestly, as of now, I think this one is my favorite of hers. I want more of these two.
Verhan is tasked with helping prepare Hernan for the 21 arrow salute ceremony. Although, initially reluctant/blackmailed to do so he soon finds the task to be enjoyable. Working with Hernan becomes something he looks forward to doing. The two develop a friendship but Verhan finds himself developing feelings. The question is will his feelings be returned or is his love unrequited?

very nice and quite amusing. Very beautiful buildup of the story where you learn more about the elves.
This first kiss, whoa wow wow, even if it takes forever until it comes to it.

He felt so good against me that it made me shiver. Weak-headed, I brushed his temple with my nose and inhaled. It was a mistake. In seconds, I was fully hard and aching. 😋

Wonderful how Verhan falls in love.

I’d never known anyone who smiled that way. Feeling as if he sucker-punched me, I didn’t dare to move, transfixed at the sight of green sparks glowing in his eyes. 😍😍

but no sex ... oh boy ... 😥😭

Ambos arqueros me encantan!

Another installment in "The Order" series that left me owed with the author's talent to create both an interesting universe and a unique affair between the MC...

This time it was Verhan's story (Ervyn's cousin - we met him in the previous books and he is quite a pervert) who tries really hard to avoid responsibility and commitment in his personal life and his tasks at the force. We got a real close look in his depraved mind and so the changes upon him once he met the quiet and reserved Hernan, were spectacular.

Hernan is so sweet, so talented but he mostly kept to himself because he was treated as an outcast in the army. Watching him open up to Verhan, the friendship and the bond between them, was really heartwarming.

As always, the story was enriched with the imaginary world of the Elfs, their traditions, their rituals, their history, that has me wanting for more.

2nd read: 4/22/2021 - I actually started to skim this after reading The Mutt because how did I not seem to put it together that THIS Verhan was freaking the COUSIN of Ervyn?! OMG SARA! Pay attention to the details, Red! I meant to skim this one, but it does lead me into The Scouts so there is no better way to remember everything I need to. Plus, I get to watch the brat get owned again.

5 Hearts

I don’t know how she does it but Kasia Bacon shreds my heart over and over again and I only want to beg her for more. She has become the queen of the stories that are short on pages but heavy on angst, UST and a fantastic payout. You get her very own version of an HEA that is never quite finished because her characters are so complex, a single moment or even a dramatic declaration is never an end, it’s just a pause for something even better.

As this is book 2.5 in The Order series, I do recommend reading the first two books so you get a feel for this world and the characters involved. The author does an amazing job with bringing you into the Highlands and the world of Dark Elves, assassins, archers and unmistakable gorgeous attraction, lust and yes love that demands every ounce of your attention so skipping anything in this series would be a disservice.

Now, having said that… OMG! This book just about did me in! Who knew that a horny brat named Verhan would work his way under my skin and have me rooting for his happiness? Well, I do have a soft spot for redeemable jerks but Verhan isn’t a jerk, he’s just young and upfront and not used to emotions that overwhelm him when he least expects it, but someone should have warned him about the innocent seduction of a ginger; its sharper than any archers arrow… even cupids.

I loved the hell out of this story. There is always something about the reluctance of someone who is asked to teach another how to do, anything and find love through it. Though way off the subject, I kept thinking of Dirty Dancing while reading this through on the third time and how Johnny Fell hard for Baby when he wasn’t looking for it, but through his teaching her how to dance, he fell and fell hard. Verhan isn’t looking for love, he’s fine hopping from bed to bed regardless of gender getting off but Hernan isn’t just another archer who needs help, he needs to train on the mountain bow to be the center shooter for the twenty-one arrow salute during the celebration of the Queen’s Namesday. Hernan is this fresh faced redhead who is willing to learn anything from Verhan and I do mean anything.

Goodness. I really don’t know how to review this without being all fangirl about it. This has a lovely slow burn to the romance and it gives you enough details about the training for the twenty-one arrow salute without knocking you over the head with the details. Kasia Bacon knows how to effortlessly blend the fantasy world with imparting modern language to make this fresh and exciting. I am not one who knows a lot about archery and yet I can see every bit of this training on the mountain bow and then the actual event? Stunning. Just stunning.

But the slow burn between Verhan and Hernan is what I came for and I got everything I ordered. I just loved watch Verhan try to stay professional with his student all while learning that he wants no one but this redhead who makes him feel lust and love and want a future together. Of course, these feelings are so new to Verhan that when he thinks he’s lost his chance, he reverts back to his old ways but good lord does he know how to make things right.

Now, I have to say as per the norm with these stories, I want more. The end? It left my romantic heart sighing but also flipping off my Nook that it was over. But good books do that, make you feel all the emotions right?

Um, have I said anything? Have I said how adorable Hernan is and how I just want to hug him as he rambles his stories to Verhan when he gets comfortable and how responsive he is to a first kiss? Have I said how the end made me gasp while Hernan fixed himself properly and the reveal… I acted just like Verhan because I wanted it just as bad? How the cover of this book is perfection and when you get why, goosebumps. Seriously.

Ugh. This book. Three times reading it wasn’t enough that I think I need to go back and read all the books again just to get lost in this world and hope that we see these two again in the next series installment.

Can you tell this was a good book? No? Well, read it and see for yourself. In fact, read the whole series and everything by the author and then come join me in the mezzanine of the Kasia Bacon fangirl section.

Kay?
Thanks.

I don't even know where to begin because I feel like I'm repeating myself a lot, but honestly, Kasia's writing is brilliant. I've been loving The Order series like no other since it has everything I ask for in a book: well-written characters and true development in the story no matter the lenght, world building that amazes me and makes me want to crawl in, sweet and heart-warming moments, and of course, a humor that suits my sassy ass.

This third book is the story of Verhan, Ervyn's cousin, and Hernan, the guy who lost against him in the trials.

As you can imagine, it's told by Verhan POV so, it's quite a ride. I think of him as a young man who always speaks his mind and gets a lot of trouble for it, if not for his unique charm. On the other hand, Hernan is basically on the soft, though skillful, quiet side.

At the beginning, Verhan is forced to teach Hernan how to use a special bow in the upcoming ceremony, which is basically something only a skilled Highlander may accomplish. And even though Hernan knows how to shoot an arrow since they both trained in the same camp, he must make a good impression in front of all the important people.

This is kind of a slow burn romance. They start being mentor/student, then they become friends who trust each other enough to tell a few secrets of their own. And eventually, they share a couple of sweet moments and a kiss that will change the whole game.

They're both beautiful, well-written characters and I liked them from the very beginning. They have so much potential to become one of my favorite couples and I'm so glad I'm a part of their journey.

Now, I must admit I am a sucker for readheads (that's why I am a readhead too), AND green-eyed characters, so Hernan is absolutely appealing to my eyes. Whilst Verhan's personality is so much like mine, that I laughed out loud a couple of times because he talks and acts like I would do with a love interest. We're such idiots with a good, kinky hearts.

Also I'm glad that this is a little bit longer than the last two books and I'm pleased to know there will be two more short stories. The art cover was stunning and the pin is just like I pictured it in my mind!
Last but not least, we get a glimpse on the so called Queen and she gives me such good vibes, I can't wait to read the book with her story.

I totally recommend this book to everybody. What can I tell you? I'm so deep down into this world that anything Kasia realeases, I'll be reading it with joy.

I'd forgotten how funny and cute Verhan is. This was pure fun and lovely all over again!

Original review

There's always something ultimately gratifying about seeing a guy who's a manwhore at heart fall unexpectedly for a sweet, innocent guy.

Verhan has no idea what's hitting him when after the initial physical attraction he slowly 'loses the plot' over red haired archer Hernan. And, tbh, Hernan and his blushes kind of enchanted me, too!

Low on steam apart from one hell of a kiss, this supplied all the romantics in this world with tons of ooohs and aaahs.

Lovely addition to this wonderful series.
