Leland Loring isn't quite sure what brought him to the obscure African archaeological dig. It might have been the sensual allure of gorgeous Maria Benedetti. or the more practical inducement of the wildly generous fee she'd offered him for his services as guide. But he feels deep in his bones that they're on to something—something incredible, awesome, inexplicable—something spawned from an unknown ancient time—something that will soon plunge them both into a realm of unbridled lust, unimaginable fear, and inescapable terror...
Pretty much about a male chauvinist traipsing across Africa in search of, and then finding the books title, The Okora Mask. The mask can control people. They bend to the users will. Also in on the hunt are Chinese. Some Russians. Nomads of all kinds. There is sex aplenty here. Lot's of talk about sex. A bit of action too. All told by a sort of annoying self styled ladies man.
This novel really is a turkey! Apparently it falls into the mystery/adventure genre, and whilst the attraction of the locations are actually really interesting, there is no adventure and no mystery in this piece of drivel.
The main character is horrendously predatory towards women - an absolute lech, which is made more creepy by the fact that the author states in a short intro that the events in this novel are based on his life. Urgh!!! Also, the writing style is horribly cliched. Seriously, some of the lines are cheesier than cheesy, par example:
"The sky was as blue as Swedish eyes."
"Beautiful women, cute women, lovely women, pretty women, amorous women. I'm actually rather fond of women. They're so female."
This novel irked me so much that I only managed 4 chapters before I had to put it down. It really made my skin crawl.
