1 - "The time for spy games is over…" Star!

DNF @ 41%

By 40% the cons list for this book was way out in the lead -

~ A grown woman calling a cat Poofy... (I am literally rolling my eyes each time I read it.)
~ Rather than swear she says 'shpooh'... (I mean really!)

~ Matt's friend asking if Trista was a dog, before meeting her, by way of differentiating her to his normal type of woman.
~ Trista not learning from her previous recklessness or stupidity.
~ The chemistry between them is virtually non-existent.
~ The author has almost gone too far in describing her as a loner, thirty-something cat-lady, in that I feel no empathy or familiarity with her.
~ (Because of the above) Personality traits that are meant to be endearing are just becoming annoying.

The only plus -

~ The story shows potential…

Just not enough for me to want to continue with it I'm afraid. This isn’t a short book, and I think if it was pared back a bit so things happen at a faster clip I may have been able to overcome the above, but with a large number of hours left too still read (according to the book God; Kindle) I am just not invested enough in this couple’s story to want to finish it, and by almost halfway as a reader I expect to be.

I am, by all the other posted reviews 100% in the minority with my feelings though. If this is an author you have read before, then you will no doubt enjoy the book, if you like me are a newbie, give it a go, not all books are going to be enjoyed by all readers, and the above is only my personal opinion.

Top-notch thriller romance….

I LOVED this author’s NYPD Blue & Gold stories and was beyond excited for this new series to begin. Trista and Matt had sparks from their first meeting and that was just the start of an action-packed, romantic romp through Washington’s alphabet agencies and the men and women who inhabit them…

Trista’s job is everything. Without it, she is lost and when Matt is part of that mess, he is the last person she would go to, or ask for help. Trouble is, he has saved her life, more than once, and he is not going anywhere when her life is still at risk. Too bad she’s a cat person and he’s a dog keeper…. Super smart, easily likable, Trista may be shy when it comes to romance but there is nothing timid about her – and she’s going to go toe to toe with Matt – with anyone who stands in her way…

Matt is a sexy, strong and equally smart agent who is going to protect Trista no matter what the cost. He’s been silently fighting his own demons for years and he’s ready to give it all to ensure her safety. Yeah, there’s a lot of that so the heart fluttering on this side of the kindle was non-stop….

These two were a great mix of strength and vulnerability as they opened up to each other, bonding over extreme circumstances and the life-threatening situations they found themselves in. They were sweet, combative and always at each other’s backs when needed. Throw in a group of supportive police/military friends and this story had it all. ALL!

I’m in book-stalker mode for the next in this series and anything else this author wants to write. I hope it’s a lot. And soon… ~Diane, 5 stars

I have a weakness for books featuring working dogs and their partners, and I was excited to being Lock 'N' Load. Our hero is sexy, confident in his job as an officer guarding the CIA offices.  He is also working at home to build a K-9 training faculty that also helps troubled youth. Are you drooling yet?

Now, CIA K-9 officer Sgt. Matt Connors may be eye candy, but he does have some issues that stem from an incident in his youth. Guilt, commitment issues and more swirl around in his head. Our heroine, crack CIA analyst Trista Gold is all work and no play. She loves her job diving into the dark web and catching spies but away from the screen she lacks serious social skills. I adored Trista and laughed as she ogled Matt.  She has zero dating experience but does have work friends whom she socializes with. She just hasn't met the right guy. Trista is acutely aware of Matt, in fact, she cannot stop gawking. But when she tries to speak her mind cannot function. Brain fog and stuttering make it nearly impossible to think let alone talk. That is until he pisses her off...

When Trista overhears something on the dark web, and suddenly she finds herself in danger. This forcesMatt and Trista to spend time together. This should be interesting because Trista is afraid of dogs. The story that unfolds was addictive and deliciously balanced between character interaction, secondary characters, suspense and heartfelt threads that lead to character growth.

The romance crackled with chemistry, and I loved everything from the banter to the tender moments and trust. We see the relationship develop on deeper levels as they open up, but fears throw some ice on things. I was happy with the way things were addressed. Nothing like adults acting like adults. I was crossing my fingers and rooting for an HEA. You'll have to grab this one and experience all the feels, swoons and suspense for yourself.

Matt's law enforcement friends and their K-9's added interest, humor and I am hoping are the men we will see in upcoming novels.

O'Fallon balanced and developed both the suspense angle and the romance allowing Matt and Trista to work together investigating. Suspense, twists, and conspiracies made for some intense moments but the author kept in grounded and realistic. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

Along similar lines to the great K9 Rescue Series by D.D. Ayres but unfortunately not in the same league.

Trista Gold is a mousy, computer analyst for the CIA, her speciality is a computer program that she designed which allows her to overhear conversations on the dark web and she has been tracking the movements and conversations of a Russian spy called Alexy Lukashin. She overhears an intriguing conversation in one chat room which talks about a mysterious 'someone' who is not what he seems, a reporter called Thomas George, and refers to a place called Iqaluit.

Sergeant Matt Connors and his dog Sheba are a K-9 unit in CIA security. Trista is afraid of dogs and seeing Sheba throws her off balance and she falls over in the security line in front of Matt. Later that evening Matt is just in time to stop Trista being dragged into the woods by a man. Taking no chances, the CIA revokes Trista's clearance and puts her on administrative leave until they can determine whether the attack had anything to do with her work or Lukashin. As Trista's life is in danger she and Matt work together to try to piece together the meaning of the conversation that she overheard and why Lukashin wants her dead.

I don't know whether I am exceptionally bad tempered recently or whether I am just in a string of books in which the characters have to tick every possible cliche but this was another one. Matt has issues dating back to his teenage years which mean he believes he can never be happy, or at least shouldn't be allowed to be happy. He must atone for the tragedy in his past and is building a centre for troubled teens where they will work alongside rescue dogs. Trista is a 30-ish virgin in frumpy clothes who suddenly becomes a goddess overnight after putting on a t-shirt and jeans. And of course as soon as she has sex she is suddenly a vixen in bed - yep, she's a sexual unicorn!
For a virgin, her inherent sense of just how to drive his body crazy with need was beyond amazing.
Trista's terror of dogs is miraculously cured by Matt in one afternoon, oh and he also buys her new clothes (after another attack on her means she can't leave the house) including a sexy green silk negligee - creepy or not? There's a 40 year old mystery to solve, a political situation to unravel (which of course both Matt and Trista instantly understand), psychotic Russians, incompetent FBI agents, kidnappings and multiple murders. And TBH, I still don't understand WHY Lukashin wanted Trista dead, he must have known that she had shared the transcript of the conversation with the CIA, after which killing her was pointless. This book could have done with less things going on.

However, despite the 'kitchen sink' approach to plotting, this was an enjoyable CIA/FBI mystery which kept me reading on a long-haul flight. It is clearly intended to be a series featuring Matt's incredibly good-looking group of friends with their K-9 companions, each of whom works for a different law enforcement group. I will definitely read more in the series.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

“Dogs are a miracle”. That’s exactly how Sergeant Matt Connors felt about his beautiful CIA K-9, Sheba. Matt is a true warrior, with skills to prove it, but he has ISSUES. Well, who doesn’t? But his main issue is BIG and has to do with his isolation and guilt. One of the top analysts for the CIA, Trista Gold, can only see his male ‘beauty’; no problem, as she has issues also. Brilliant and obsessed with her job, she finds herself stammering around him, and frozen in fear when she sees Sheba.

When Tris finds a Russian on the dark web planning something nefarious, suddenly her life seems to hang in the balance. How did they find her and who exactly are they? One of the best romantic-suspense genre writers I’ve read! The author has a background that lends itself to creative spy-type suspense and the sensual romance between well-developed characters is certainly a plus. Love the working dog 🐕 lowdown also❣️ A well-organized storyline that is entertaining, will keep you reading late into the night!

K-9 cop romance story - sounds good, right? Right.

Trista Gold, top CIA analyst, stumbles into some serious conspiracy shit and so the Russians try to kill her a couple times. Matt, a CIA K-9 cop human officer person, saves her life and whisks her away to protect her.

Some special features include:

-A heroine who is undercover hot - super petite and shapely (even though she spends 10 hours a day minimum sitting at her work computer) with bright green eyes and tussled blonde hair, yet somehow neither she nor anyone else has ever considered the possibility that she might be pretty until the hero does.

-She is astoundingly intelligent, but keeps doing dumb stuff. My favorite example is that after her identity is compromised and someone tries to kill her, she - the CIA's top analyst - is positive that it was just a coincidence. Definitely, definitely nothing to do with her work. More examples of questionable judgment include naming her cat "Poofy" and swearing like a preschooler.

-Regency-worthy sex, including surprise virginity and an "I don't know how it will fit!" moment.

-The hero is very tall ("she barely comes up to his pecs") and stately with emotional baggage the likes of which mere mortals cannot fathom. And he went to Harvard.

I kept hoping it would get better, but it really didn't.

There were things I liked and disliked about this book. The romance was too insta-love for me and Trista’s constant “a guy like him would never go for me” really got old as did Matt’s hot/cold “I’m not good enough” act. The mystery/suspense part I enjoyed as well as the side characters, but I could have done without the cynophobia part b/c the “incident” that created it was pretty minor and it only took Tris 10 min of Matt coaching her for her to get over a lifelong fear.

Recomendable!

DNF at 27%. I just can’t. Why does this book get so many good reviews!? This woman is a an employee of the CIA. She gets attacked but doesn’t report it (even tho she’s rescued by a CIA cop so she should know he’s going to report it) cause she’s afraid of losing her security clearance.

Of course, she loses it anyway because of course the cop reports it and she’s in danger.

It was dumb but I persevered.

Then, she decides to do some work from home “because she’s nothing without work”. Which is also dumb. Cause likely her work is why she’s in danger. PLUS ITS ILLEGAL CAUSE HER SECURITY CLEARANCE WAS REVOKED. For some reason, I kept reading.

But I just can’t. The dude is so strong and smart and tall. He works out and makes intelligent decisions. Tho he’s also a manwhore who had “10 girlfriends in the last 12 months” (what!?).

The woman is petite (15 inches shorter than the hero?), weak, doesn’t have any street smarts and it’s hard to tell she’s somewhat intelligent at all with her behavior, shy around cute guys, and so on. Oh. And such low self esteem. By all accounts, she’s pretty attractive but she thinks she’s plain. Sigh.

I just got tired of this. Why do authors write dynamics like this!?

I can't even remember the last time it took me 3! days to finish a book (that wasn't due to lack of time). It was literally impossible to read more than a few minutes at a time and still keep what little sanity I have left. And apparently I don't have much to begin with, because why I didn't DNF this book after the first chapter is a measure of stupidity.

I can't think of a single good thing that I liked about this book, but there's plenty that did not work;
🚫 Unengaging writing. I'm sorry but it just wasn't good. There was no flow in the words, and the dialogue felt off.
🚫 Too many clichés. I mean it was one after it other, they never ended.
🚫 The (virginal) damsel in distress. I had to check the publication date to see if it was written in the 80´s...
🚫 While on that subject, her non cursing was ridiculous. I mean swear or not that's totally up to you. But please a grown woman not swearing because her mother wouldn't approve is... I don't have the word for it. So instead she makes up her own curse words... Just no.
🚫 The self-tortured hero, I'm sorry but he was just so self-pitying with his all "poor me" attitude that it got on my last nerve.
🚫 The plot was not credible in any way.

And that's only a small selection of the things that didn't work for me, but I figure you get my drift by now...

Well since my first review went into cyberspace and got lost, probably due to Trista's secret program, I'll keep this one brief.
Men in uniform -hot. Men in uniform with working dogs-hotter.
This is a great story full of suspense, intrigue and a man's struggle to put his past behind him, if he can. Trista was a joy. I loved her, brainiac, strong and deathly afraid of dogs, she learns to overcome her fear thanks to Matt and his K-9 Sheba. Sheba made the story so perfect. Matt did not however. I just couldn't seem to mesh him into the story, especially where Tris was concerned. His on again off again put me off as well.
I loved Tris, her sass and fearlessness. Her stammer when she got nervous around Matt, the attraction was there. Slow slow spark there. Matt gave me pause on several occasions in the book.
More than once I was right there with Tris wanting to rip him a new one. Wasn't just me, she felt the same way. The story took a nice shift when Matt's friends arrive with their dogs in tow on special assignment and I am hoping they get their own books.
This is a great story, well written and the twists you don't even see coming will keep you turning pages.

The plot sounded good, but the suspense took a back seat to the typical "he's so hot, she's so hot".

Plus for being intelligent, the h could be really stupid. Her life long dog trauma was way overblown for the minor incident and then was so easily resolved. And this is from someone who definitely understands childhood fears of dogs.

There is also a major need for suspension of disbelief as a number of scenes and characterizations are hard to buy.

This book was exhilarating.

4,5 stars.

I'm crazy about romantic suspense, and this book had in spades steam, sexiness, action and anxious uncertainty.
Since the prologue, I was intrigued and craving more.

Trista was painfully shy, especially around Matt. She wasn't socially self-assured, but she definitely knew her way around a computer. She was a whiz at her job and a work in progress on interaction with other people.
Matt was overly protective (with good reason), hot as all get out and oh, so broken. He cared deeply for his friends and he was willing to risk everything for the people (and furry friends) he loved.

Trista and Matt both had their weaknesses and their insecurities to deal with, but together, even if they didn't realize it at first, they strengthen one another.
They respected each other's vulnerabilities and urged them to be better, to seek help, to overcome their fears.
They were good for each other.

And the icing on the cake: dogs!
Bring me all the furry best friends and let them make a magnificent story even better.

I enjoyed this romantic suspense but there is too much cursing for my tastes.

Trista is a crack CIA analyst who is sorely lacking in self-confidence and social skills. Presumably she was a computer nerd through her growing years and never met a boy or man to show her the world beyond computer code. Then she meets CIA K-9 officer Matt Connors. He is a hunk, of course, and Trista is flabbergasted to be saved by him --- twice in one day! He is so kind to her, but she knows a man like him couldn’t be interested in a geek like her. And it doesn’t help that she has been frightened of dogs since a bad encounter as a child.

Matt has always been able to get any woman he wants but he makes it clear there will be nothing beyond a good time. He has a guilt-ridden soul that tells him he doesn’t deserve love or happiness. He sees beyond the geeky Trista to the beautiful woman behind the mousy clothes. He is glad to help her and hopes to show her she is more than a computer nerd, but he can’t allow himself to respond to the pull of attraction and longing for something more that he feels when he looks at or thinks of her.

Trista has uncovered a suspicious, mysterious and threatening chat but her identity was exposed by a few minutes of computer breakdown. She doesn’t want to think the night time attack on her has anything to do with what she saw but a second attack on her life convinces everyone else around her that her life is in danger. Security assigns Matt to be her body guard so the pair are reluctantly thrown together.

Matt takes her to the safest place he knows – his own home where a handful of his old training buddies are visiting. Each one is a man-worthy canine officer within different branches of enforcement. Their attentions help Trista to come out of her shell while raising the jealous nerves for Matt. But he has to concentrate on keeping her safe before he can face his own demons to try to be the man she challenges him to be.

I did like the chemistry between Trista and Matt even though I couldn't relate too well to Trista's rather wimpy character. Fortunately she grows through the danger. And of course, I love the canine element although it is secondary to the romantic suspense. I also enjoyed the banter of the hunky friends. I imagine there could be great romantic suspense stories for each friend. The suspense, danger and action are all laid out well to keep the book moving along at a good pace. The sexual encounters are an addition, not the focus, and they are sizzling without being crass. The romance has conflicts that provide for realistic growth for both characters.

My only objection with the book is the free and liberal use of foul words. Sadly, that distracts and detracts from my enjoyment of the story. I acknowledge I am sensitive to foul language – I don’t use it and don’t like it. I’ll accept a little but not continuous through the book. If the series came with an edited version I would read every one. Otherwise I will most likely pass for other less vulgar works. I recommend this to readers who enjoy strong romantic suspense with all the good elements: romance, suspense and action. Just be cautioned about the language.

I received this title through NetGalley.

What a brilliant start to a new series this proved to be - I really can’t wait to read the subsequent books in the series!

Take Trista Gold - one, shy, introvert, CIA computer geek, someone highly talented at analysing, programming and searching for evidence of spies on the black web . . . . make her a talented Russian linguist - then have her inadvertently make herself a target for those she’s endeavouring to uncover. A target they attempt to assassinate not just once but twice! Now have her saved both times by a handsome CIA K-9 officer, Sergeant Matt Connors, even though she’s scared of dogs!

This is a brilliant spy thriller and romantic suspense story. The main characters are superbly developed, both strong in their own way yet having vulnerable aspect that help make them easy to relate to. The situations in which they find themselves are action packed, life threatening and portrayed so you almost feel you are there with them. The attraction may be there from very early but, for very different reasons, neither act upon it until they had built up a relationship based on trust. This action packed story is packed with intrigue and I thoroughly enjoyed escaping into it. There are other excellent characters in Matt’s friends and their K-9 partners - I’m hoping some of these will feature as the main characters in future stories in the series! If you enjoy romantic suspense -  with the stress on suspense - and stories involving K-9s you’ll probably love this story, too.

I requested and was given a copy of this novel, via NetGalley, with no obligation. This is my honest review of the book after choosing to read it.

This is a very well written suspenseful read that keeps you glued with its twists and turns until the end.
I enjoyed reading about brainy CIA analyst and K9 officer and their romance, even thou Matt did made me angry on few places in the book.
It is a book for romance suspense and crime readers, too.
I'm glad to know that this is a first book of the series and we will have a chance to read about the other K9 officers and their love stories.

4.0 stars. Enjoyed this Author's K-9 Special Ops 1st book and am anxious for the next book to be released. Decided to give this series a go in the meantime. Was a bit of a slow start, but eventually the story got rolling. It's good romantic suspense and love the animals featured in the story. Will definitely read book 2. Matt's got a whole host of friends with K9's, plenty of reading to choose from.

A fun read! I had a good time with this one. It was light and easy and just what I needed. Plus I do love myself a good ol' romantic suspense novel. I'll admit, the main relationship was kinda dumb at times, but Ive just come to expect that now so it's fine. I liked the concept, and although the execution could use some work, I'm still very happy.

There are a few things I could complain about, such as Matt's trauma not being developed well enough for my liking, but what I'm going the focus on is the very, very end of this book, the epilogue. Yep, it happened AGAIN...marriage/marriage proposal at the end of the book. So annoying, so unnecessary. Especially in this case since there were only a few hours between them officially becoming bf/gf and then fiancés. Jesus Christ, they'd only just made it official, that was good enough for me. Not to mention only a few sentences prior, Trista stated that she wasn't going to move in with him just yet because she wasn't certain certain of his feelings.

Ugh.

Anyways, this was still a good read.

This is the third novel I've read by Tee O'Fallon, and it's the first book in her Federal K-9 series, and although I'm a cat person, I've recently been reading quite a few books featuring canine characters and have developed quite a liking for them, and this novel was no exception, and it gets a 5-star rating from this reader.

Matt Connors is the sexy, tall, handsome hunk in this novel. He's a police sergeant and he and his K-9 companion work at CIA headquarters, checking ID's at the entrance, which is where he first spots the heroine, Trista Gold, one of the CIA's top computer analysts, a small, shy, computer geek, whose whole life is her work and her cat, Poofy (a really bad choice of cat names for a grown woman to choose). She doesn't date, doesn't flirt and has never had a real relationship with a man. Matt notices her almost immediately and manages to see beyond her thick trifocals and drab gray attire to the pretty woman beneath the camouflage. As she approaches Matt's station with her ID, she notices his dog, and due to a bad experience when she was 6 years old, has been terrified of dogs ever since. She ends up having a panic attack and Matt manages to get her through it, which is how they meet. Trista is so socially inept that no sooner does she see Matt when she can't take her eyes off of him, and, when he speaks to her she starts stammering uncontrollably.

Trista is brilliant with computers, and she's exceptional at spotting and breaking codes and ciphers, and her CIA job allows her to search for spies and terrorists, hiding and operating in the many secret chat rooms on the dark web. She doesn't interact with them, but a program she wrote allows her to remain invisible to them while she lurks and listens. One day, Trista ends up overhearing part of a conversation in a chat room between two men, one of whom she believes is a spy, but there's a small computer glitch, and although it only lasts for seconds, it's enough for them to "see" her, and late that very night, as Trista is leaving work and heading to a local eatery for dinner, she's grabbed from behind and hauled off into the woods with a knife at her throat. Luckily, Matt was headed to the same eatery, and he and his K-9 manage to rescue her, although her attacker gets away. And that's just the beginning of her troubles and the dangers ahead.

What follows is a tense, intricate and engrossing web of treachery and secrecy, with Trista at the center of it all. There's also a mysterious 40-year old murder that manages to tie itself into the present day action. And there's also the growing intimacy and attraction between Matt and Trista, but Matt is troubled too. At age 16, he and his best friend got drunk and were goofing around when something happened (no spoilers from me) and his friend died. Matt has blamed himself ever since, and internalized the event to such a degree that he won't allow himself to be happy, or to have a lasting relationship. His only relationship is with the K-9 dogs he trains, and the creation of Jerry's Place, where troubled teens can learn and heal through their relationship with and training of K-9 dogs. But Trista manages to somehow get past Matt's emotional barriers, and Matt manages to get her used to being around his dogs. All this, while Trista is supposed to be keeping a low profile and staying hidden for her own protection.

I truly liked both of the main characters in this novel, who each had their own flaws and issues, and who somehow helped each other try to get past them. To have managed to fully develop these characters in the midst of the dangers they faced was no small accomplishment, and it made for an exceptionally good, tense, emotional and addictive read--one I highly recommend.

I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this novel. The opinions expressed are my own.

If you haven’t guessed, I added this to my TBR because of the K9 on the cover. I am a sucker for dog books, and I love K9 stories. I have mixed success with suspense in general, but I still want to read every book with police or military dogs. This was a successful read, despite some problems with the heroine.

Trista is a analytical whiz, and she works for the CIA. A genius with computers and data, she has been following a Russian spy around the dark web for months. When a power glitch blows her cover, she suddenly finds herself the victim of two unsuccessful murder attempts. After her house is set on fire, with her in it, she is forced into protective custody, against her wishes.

Sgt Matt Connors works for the CIA in the K9 division. Thanks to his timely appearances, he manages to save Trista from certain death, with the help of his Belgian Shepherd, Sheba. When Matt is ordered to take Trista and hide, he takes her to his compound, which he hopes to one day turn into a rehab center for troubled youth and homeless dogs. With his buddies in town to work during the upcoming election, he is certain that Trista will be protected while in his care.

Well, she would have been if she had just followed the rules, but, the heck, this is romantic suspense, so Trista has to put herself in danger. That particular character flaw was annoying. I just don’t get it. If you have almost been murdered two times, I’d think you would keep your head down for a bit. But no, Trista continues her top secret computer surveillance, on Matt’s unsecured computer, and just gets herself into more trouble. Whelp, go figure.

The other thing that irked was Trista’s fear of dogs. I guess I get it, but I can’t comprehend being that fearful of a canine, especially one that is as well trained as Sheba. She’s a CIA employee, for goodness sake! Trista finds herself in her worst nightmare, since all of Matt’s friends are also K9 officers for various governmental agencies, so she is surrounded by dogs. And hot men. And I want to read more about the hot men. And their dogs.

The last half of the book was absolutely a page turner, and I could not put my iPad down. The big mystery and the resolution were well done, and despite Trista’s lack of self-preservation, I enjoyed Lock ‘N’ Load, and I am dying to know who the hero will be for the next book in the series.

Fantastic first book in a series!

When you're a brilliant intelligence analyst who knows her own strengths and weaknesses it's hard to accept certain things. That someone might best her in her world, that the hot security guy might actually like her, or that she might one day like dogs is like believing in unicorns, it just isn't possible. Or is it?

When Matt, hot security guy at the CIA, and his K-9, Sheba help Trista Gold up from getting knocked over he knows he really likes her but he also knows two other things; she is petrified of dogs and she deserves better than him!

When Trista's world is soon turned upside down and Matt and Sheba save her life she finds out just how wrong she can be.

If you love a good action, spy thriller with a bit of love thrown in you'll love this book!

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Trista Gold is the genius CIA computer analyst, going after a Russian spy being her latest assignment. Being a computer analyst should be a relative safe job, but when there is an attack on her life twice in rapid succession she taken of her case. The man who saved her life twice, K-9 sergeant Matt Conners and his loyal dog Sheba are tasked with protecting Trista's life from another attack. But as they delve deeper in the case of Trista's attacker, it is not only her life they have to protect but also their vulnerable hearts in the process.

Pro's:
+ Loved the story, it was really well thought out and you really went beyond the surface with these characters. The investigative angle was nice and ofcourse the bad guy was a Russian Spy, but the journey to his capture was quite thrilling.
+ There are dogs in this story and especially Matt's dog Sheba takes a big role in this story. The author managed to really make this dog come to life and as a dog owner myself ( and one who used to have a German Shepard) I felt like there were no inconsistencies were the animals were concerned.

Con's:
- The amount of times Matt Connors abs or muscles were mentioned in this story was truly almost recordbreaking. I get these stories objectify the male hero a little bit, but this time I had to do an eyeroll from time to time, so much it was mentioned.

This was a fun, lighthearted read, my expectations weren't very high and it did not really disappoint. The animals, especially the dogs, were the biggest sell for this book and that did not disappoint and are the biggest reason I will pick up the next books in this series as well. This story was a thrill, a lot happened and the characters aren't shallow, but it wasn't mind blowing or anything. It did entertain and certainly this is a good read between some of the heavier books I sometimes pick up.

This was such an exciting and suspenseful book. I love stories about cute geeks and strong, handsome men. Trista was one of the highest computer analysts in the CIA. She had even built programs where she could listen to people talking on the black web without the individuals knowing she was there. This got her into some trouble as she overheard part of a conversation between two Russians that was not supposed to be known to anyone in the US. Luckily for her the handsome K-9 handler, Matt, who usually checked her in to the CIA knew her. She had a crush on him, but she felt he would never look at someone like her. The first time someone tried to get rid of her, Matt was the one who saved her. The second time someone tried to burn her house down with her in it, once again Matt saved her and then he was assigned to protect her for the next month. It was heartbreaking how Matt had blamed himself for his childhood best friend’s death and didn’t feel like he should ever be happy. I loved the on again, off again feelings Matt showed Trista. The two had so many suspenseful situations they were in that had me on the edge of my seat. I strongly encourage you to read the book.

This book has been recommended to me because I was looking for a book where the h was scared of dogs and the H helped her get through it.
On this point it did not disappoint, although being myself scared of dogs, I find it hard to believe that in one session I would just let go of my fear and become best friends with my BF’s dog.

Aside from this, I liked the story enough, I liked the tension building between the characters and the investigation going. I did guess the ending before it was revealed but it didn’t bother me. The second half of the book was a bit too long and dragging for my taste, and really my least favorite thing about this book was Matt. He annoyed me with his « I can never love anyone, I am no good for you, but at the same time you will do what I say and pine after me otherwise I will pout like a child ».

I did love Matt’s friends though and will gladly read their stories !! 😊

I try very hard not to do comparisons of authors but after reading the Tmber Creek K-9 mysteries I’m now expecting a higher quality, more authentic, realistic portrayal of the actual Dog’s featured in these books. This was a major step back. *sigh*
My second quibble comes in the form of a question. How does a woman in this modern time create a female character who is silly, dippy and just all-around ridiculous at times? *eye roll*
