In a Nutshell: A yaoi manga about trauma and grief and hope and moving on. Tremendous promise, tremendous disappointment. Lacklustre in almost every way. This is an outlier review.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Plot Preview:
After the sudden death of his parents and his sister in an accident, Yuichi finds himself the sole guardian of his seven-year-old nephew Ayumu. Seeking a fresh start, the two move into a new neighbourhood with the ocean nearby. Yuichi hopes that the serenity of the location will help them both find peace and bonding. As Yuichi’s skills in the kitchen are less than ideal, the two frequent the neighbourhood deli, run by Ryo. Yuichi and Ryo soon become close, but it is clear that their individual pasts still hold much trauma.
Bookish Yays:
🌊 Ayumu. 66.67% of my star rating is for him.
🌊 It’s standalone, unlike most manga.
🌊 The artwork. Quite good. Probably the saving grace for those who enjoy manga-style artwork. (I actually don’t, but that’s not the book’s fault.)
Bookish Nays:
💧 The lack of originality. Everything offers a feeling of déjà vu.
💧 The ad hoc plot development, with no rhyme or rhythm to what’s happening or why. Subplots are thrown in at random and abandoned equally suddenly.
💧 Ryo and Yuichi, who seem to introspect more than needed and communicate less than needed.
💧 The romance. Way too manipulative! Yaoi anyway is darker and more ‘fetishised’ than regular BL romance, but this one is toxic for all the wrong reasons.
💧 The poor character detailing. Ayumu and the female secondary character in a minor role (forgot her name; too bored to go back and check) are okay, but Ryo and Yuichi are too flat. (And sometimes, even weird.) No other character has a strong presence in the plot.
💧 The forced found-family vibes. Given the cover, I expected this to be handled better. But this was almost insta.
💧 The haphazard pacing, where things either zoom or drag.
💧 The half-baked execution of the main themes of grief and childhood trauma.
💧 The ending. Seriously?
💧 The cover promised a wholesome story, so I didn’t expect to see this go into rape territory with non-consensual relations and even pseudo-incest.
Basically, I completed this only because I had to complete it. I am utterly disappointed because I had expected a lot more from this manga based on the blurb.
I want to make it very clear that my issues with the book aren’t with the boys love theme or the slightly explicit scenes, as these are characteristic of yaoi manga anyway. The plot and character development, though – Ugh! I can’t tell you how much I was complaining and eye-rolling during this read. Then again, a majority of the readers (who seem to be half my age) are gushing over the emotions in this book. So it is quite likely that middle-age has turned my heart to stone. (That said, I am slightly relieved that my manga-aficionado teenaged daughter, who accompanied me on this reading journey and bore the brunt of my constant grumbling, was almost equally bored by this book.)
I cannot recommend this, sorry. But perhaps if you are a teen with a focus only on “boy love” and absolutely no other aspect of storytelling, you might gush as much as the others are over this manga.
1.5 stars, rounding up for the art.
My thanks to Tokyopop for providing the DRC of “The Little Bird Sleeps by the Sea” via Edelweiss+. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book. Sorry this didn’t work out better.
There was drama, sadness, loss, but also an HEA. This manga wasn't the usual story only focused on sex, but had a real plot, and like almost all the works from this mangaka, it tried to tell something deeper than a mere hook-up.
The romance was extremely soft and sweet... The continous presence of the sea, the storm quietly brewing in the distance reflecting the emotional turmoil of our characters made it a perfect kind of cozy read for the summer heat I'm currently forced to endure. And the sea glass! I especially loved all the little moments Ryo and Ayumu shared; the way they bonded warmed something in my chest 🥺
Extra kudos for Kazuya's mom and her infamous comparison of Ryo and her son when it comes to emotional honesty lol
Esta fue una historia agradable de leer y de ver. Es un romance tierno que incluye tres protagonistas con historias de pérdida y superación.
Tachibana Yuuichi quién perdió a sus dos padres y a su hermana mayor en un trágico accidente de auto quedando asi al cuidado de su sobrino Ayumu, quién por supuesto también perdió a casi toda su familia.
Kurebayashi Ryou, quien también perdió a sus padres cuando era muy pequeño aún y quedó al cuidado de su tio, igual que pasa con Ayumu, por lo que de entrada simpatiza con Ayumu y se involucra un poco con el niño y el tio porque quiere saber si el niño esta bien o si esta pasando por una situación similar a la suya. En la actualidad Ryou es dueño de una tienda que vende comidas preparadas y Yuuichi y su sobrino se convierten en clientes habituales.
Y es asi como poco a poco se involucran Ryou y Yuuichi se involucran mas en la vida del otro, pero hay muchas barreras emocionales a superar.
La historia es muy corta, es decir, me gustó tanto que me habría gustado que durara un poco mas, tal vez que se desarrollaran un poco mas algunos cosas referentes al pasado de Ryou, pero es solo un gusto personal.
Esta es de esas historias que sé que voy a volver a leer, el arte es hermoso y la historias es muy entretenida y fluida.
En este manga nos encontramos con Tachibana Yuuichi, el hijo menor soltero de la familia Tachibana, que debido a un trágico accidente que acaba con la vida de sus padres y su hermana, decide adoptar a su sobrino y mudarse a una pequeña ciudad de la costa japonesa.
Por otro lado tenemos a Kurebayashi Ryou, el dueño de una tienda que vende comida casera. Como Yuuichi tiene más peligro en la cocina que una piraña en un bidet, él y su sobrino se convierten en clientes habituales.
Así es como Ryou y Yuuichi se involucran más en la vida del otro, regalándonos una historia que no solo trata del luto, la pérdida y la tristeza, sino de cómo a veces necesitamos que otras personas nos ayuden para poder empezar a curarnos.
Puntuación: 4.5/5
Es un yaoi que me ha gustado mucho porque tenemos dos personajes muy diferentes, uno que esconde muchas cosas y tiene una coraza a su alrededor y otro que es super transparente y se puede ver a través de él, por lo que vamos a ver su relación.
A mí Yuuichi me gusta mucho porque es muy bueno, además es un muy buen tío, siempre da lo mejor de él y por eso me parece muy bonito y, por otro lado, tenemos a Ryo, un hombre que a primera vista parece muy chulo, mujeriego y que le suda todo, pero cuanto más le vas conociendo, te das cuenta de la vida que ha pasado y por eso también me gusta.
Es una historia que me ha gustado mucho, aunque no sea nada del otro mundo.
Me encantan los slice of life y el tema de familia elegida así que esto tenía todos los ingredientes para ser una historia que me iba a encantar. Desde luego, así ha sido.
Ryô y Yuuichi me han resultado personajes muy bien elaborados, desde el comienzo hasta el desenlace. Especialmente en los paralelismos entre Ryô y Ayumu pero también sus diferencias. Creo que tiene un ritmo ideal además de un dibujo muy bonito.
Funciona perfectamente como un tomo único con la profundidad exacta que te hace adorar la historia y los personajes sin hacerse demasiado lento o alargarse sin sentido.
¡Uno que recomiendo sin duda!
This was a beautifully written but melancholy story of grief and healing between a young man left to raise his nephew after their family dies, and another man whose cheery demeanor masks deep hurt and self loathing. The journey they all go on together is painful at times, but ultimately ends happily. I could have used at least one more chapter with some domestic fluff, but this is still a very strong and highly emotional one shot.
Kiedy zaczynałam ją czytać nawet nie myślałam, że tak bardzo wzruszę się podczas jej czytania. Była to niebywałe poruszająca i dająca do myślenia historia, która zmusiła mnie do refleksji.
Jedyne do czego mogłabym się przyczepić to to, że pod koniec cała akcja nabrała za dużego tempa i została poprowadzona bez większego wgłębiania się w szczegóły.
Milutka czytanka, schematyczna i niezbyt ciekawa, ale przyjemna. Najciekawsze wydały mi się wątki, które tylko ledwie zarysowano i porzucono, przez co dramaturgia całej historii została niemal całkowicie spłaszczona.
Fue bastante tierno la verdad. Me quedé con ganas de más pero a la vez estuve contenta por como queda todo. Algo tranquilo que se puede terminar en una sentada y hacer reflexionar un poco.
I feel terrible rating this manga so low, but I found this to be the biggest chore to get through. The pacing was all wrong, the characterizations weren't realized enough for me to fully root for this couple by the end, and overall it bored me--the biggest cardinal sin.
Ha estado bien, pero sin más. No llegué a conectar con los personajes y la relación de los protagonistas es de manual estándar BL. No me ha aportado nada nuevo.
Sono rimasta molto delusa. Quando l'ho iniziato ero piena di aspettative perché la storia, seppure non delle più originali, sembrava perfetta da esplorare fino in fondo, analizzando per bene la psicologia dei personaggi e il loro reagire agli eventi della vita e le tristi difficoltà che ci mette davanti. Mi aspettavo di commuovermi per il dolce e buffo Yuuichi che con coraggio ha deciso di prendersi cura del nipotino, di innamorarmi del piccolo Ayumu, così indifeso e spezzato dalla morte della sua famiglia e terrorizzato di perdere l'affetto di Yuuichi e soprattutto di rimanere travolta dal misterioso ed enigmatico Ryou che fin da subito, con i suoi modi bizzarri, mi ha fatto capire di stare nascondendo un passato pesante e di aver sofferto a tal punto da crearsi una corazza. Mi aspettavo lacrime e sorrisi e invece... nulla. La storia non è male e ci sono anche momenti carini ma... non sono riuscita a provare le emozioni che avrei voluto rimanendo ahimè indifferente e quasi annoiata per metà del manga e sforzandomi di continuarlo fino alla fine. Il fatto è che la storia parte molto lenta e NON con la lentezza giusta, non con i flashback o momenti noiosetti che però ti spingono a pensare "Ah ecco perché lui fa così! Ecco perchè è successo questo!" l'inizio è semplicemente lento e senza troppi dettagli sulla vita dei protagonisti, fatto di incontri, chiacchiere vuote e senza emozioni e tutto sembra quasi un banale slice of life destinato a non portare da nessuna parte se non mostrarci un po' di amicizia e rapporti famigliari per poi concentrare tutto il dramma, il fluff e l'angst negli ultimi 2 capitoli e mezzo rendendo così la lettura squilibrata e spingendo secondo me molti ad interromperla prima della fine. Avrei diviso diversamente la storia, inserito il flashback sulla vita di Ryou PRIMA per spingerci anche ad apprezzare il suo lato dolce e paterno nei confronti di Ayumu ed empatizzare maggiormente con lui e invece... nulla. Per 3/4 del manga ho sbadigliato e l'ultimo quarto me lo sono letta tutta d'un fiato e questo mi ha seccato moltissimo. Se solo la storia fosse stata approfondita e disposta diversamente sarebbe entrato sicuramente nella mia top mentre in questo caso non posso che votarlo tristemente 3 stelline (senza neanche arrotondare a 4) e ahimè evitare di consigliarlo. Se cercate lacrime ed emozioni infatti non è questo il caso e rischiate solamente di sbadigliare per metà del tempo. Un vero peccato :(
Unfortunately, this story didn’t have as much of an emotional impact on me like I expected/wanted it to. The synopsis sounded really interesting, and I really liked some of the author’s other works, so I was eager to get to reading this.
And…generally speaking, I did like the story, overall. I really liked all three of our protagonists and each of their own individual struggles and concerns. Yuuichi, who is wondering whether he’s enough for Ayumu. Ayumu, who fears being a burden to Yuuichi. Ryou, who saw his child self in Ayumu. Honestly, I might reread this at some point; it was a good read all around.
But, I also can’t help but feel like something was missing? Maybe this oneshot could have been split into two volumes, for better buildup and natural cohesion of all the various story elements and plot details? I’m not sure, but another reviewer mentioned that the story felt unbalanced, and I have to agree somewhat. I can’t put my finger on it, and it’s throwing me off lol.
Like…there were a lot of emotional points, and I can see that they’re intended to be emotional, but it didn’t grip me the way the story wanted me to, so now I’m sad 🥲.
I’m rambling at this point, but oh well lmao. I also wish we had a bit more development between Yuuichi and Ryou—I would have liked to see them hanging out more and having fun :,D.
Oh, and did Ryou have intercourse with his step-mom?? 😀😭 Or did I read that wrong, cuz man uh😟 He has a lot of trauma which was never dealt with properly, so sir, may I suggest therapy!! it’s for your own good!! OH maybe that’s one of the things that was missing?? Like further improvement or discussion of Ryou’s trauma maybe?? Not a resolution but more,,acknowledgement? (As you can tell, I really don’t tend to plan out my reviews lmao).
Tenía este tomo en pendientes (tanto de compra como de lectura) desde hacía una eternidad, pero un amigo me lo regalo en mi visita a Madrid y al fin lo he podido leer.
Este tomo es autoconclusivo, precioso y doloroso, lo recomiendo.
Todo esto va a estar escrito con spoilers, así que aviso de antemano
🚨SPOILERS 🚨
Esta historia me parece hermosa, como Yuuichi acepta hacerse cargo de su sobrino tras perder a sus padres y su hermana, sin saber bien como lo va a hacer, queriendo lo mejor para el niño y tratando de hacer lo que cree es mejor para él me acaricia el corazón, pero ver como algunos compañeros de trabajo hablan a sus espaldas por eso me duele. Acoger de golpe y sin pensarlo a un niño, por mucho que lo quieras, te trastoca la vida, Yuuchi hace lo que puede, por suerte, consigue la ayuda de Ryu y de la madre de un chico de la escuela de Ayumu, el pobre hace malabares para seguir adelante, ni siquiera va a eventos de unión de equipo en el trabajo ni sale con nadie para poder estar con su sobrino, ya que no quiere dejarlo solo.
Ryu tiene una tienda de comida para llevar y parece que siente algo por él, le suelta algunas perlitas con segundas intenciones que le dejan bastante rojo. Con el tiempo descubrimos que Ryu vivió algo parecido a Ayumu y que sufrió maltrato por parte de sus tíos, por eso se acercó a ellos, quería comprobar que el niño estuviera bien y que el amor que Yuuichi le da sea realmente genuino y no solo para las apariencias.
Ryu, quiero darte un abrazo!! Y a Yuuichi! Y a Ayumu! Quiero dar un abrazo grande y fuerte a los tres, realmente lo necesitan!!
