With Creagh attacks and diabolical sorcerers from Darkside gathering, Penny Lane and Drake Huntsman have their hands full, but they'll make time to torment each other in their struggle for ultimate domination. Will Penny's inanity and humiliation finally push Drake over the edge, or will he manage to take her with him as he falls further and further in love?
Content Warning: You may choke if you try reading and eating macaroons at the same time when the madcap antics make you laugh too hard.
I'm shaking from that ending! Knowing I have to wait until next month for another fix is awful! So glad the truth of Pitch was the one I had anticipated! Zack made me so mad. Seeing his reasoning right at the end made it better, but there wasn't enough book left to make me feel placated. This series will gut you.
Bliss is right! This series is addicting and cute! The author always leaves questions unanswered and keeps you wanting more. There’s so much room for development and spin offs, I can’t wait to read them all!!!!!!
Where can I start? This book follows the events from Dread Delight, and I couldn't be more hooked than I was before. I have followed this author since January 2014, and I have seen her grow in her writing style. However, I felt first in love with Watergirl, yet Darkly Sweet series have awoken my interest to the point of not remembering Captain Hotness. Penny is adjusting to what Drake did to her last book. While Drake is trying to understand his witch. Zach is busy with Pitch, but he cannot stop caring about Penny. Penny is trying to full fill her grandmother's wishes and save her mother, yet she cannot allow herself to drop her guard down. Penny is haunted by her grief of losing Poppy, not the cat. Nevertheless, Penny continues being our sweet lollipop, even though, people try to extinguish her.
I honestly recommend this book to anyone that likes Cassandra Clare, Lauren Kate, and Wendy Higgins.
Just wow!! Ive been binge reading this series the last few days and each book just keeps getting more delicious... Going further down the rabbit hole of twisted humor, descriptive craziness and emotional brightness of Penny Lane, the main character. I can see each player with clarity, can almost smell the air that Ms Whicker describes, hear their voices and feel the magical pull between the fated lovers. I'm an older reader, but enjoy the YA books for their typically more positive outlook and fresh perspective on romance while still creating a satisfying experience that leaves me wanting more. On to the next book which comes out in a few days and I'm sure this too will be a charming view into these witches and mages of Rosewood academy.
Drake sure threatens to kill people a lot for someone we have yet to see actually kill a named character. To be fair, I can't, at the moment, think of any character that has killed a named character, but I'm sure it will come to me.
We finally get some answers with Bitter Bliss and the worldbuilding starts to make more sense. I'm quite peeved about the ending, otherwise I'd be giving this one two thumbs up and gushing about how it is my favorite so far. I haven't minded the chaotic worldbuilding, but getting some actual explanations about how things work is a game changer. I don't like the ending. (It is effective, though, I'll give it that. I'm ready to devour the next one in the series only to make sure a certain mage gets his comeuppance.)
The church scene took me by complete surprise but I liked it. It feels like there are some deeper themes at play beyond chaos and why-the-heck-not.
The plot on this was a bit repetitive. I started not liking the mc when she was so in denial. I mean she was kissing the h and going on dates but yet she wasn't dating him. It got old reading the same plot as book two. The same storyline as book two. Penny was weak n pathetic. I was hoping Pitch was her alter ego to make her badass except she was so insecure and weak.
The ending was a major cliffhanger and was again using the same plot as book two where Penny was protection spell was removed by Zach. The third book ruined the series for me. I was hoping to see the romance between the main mc developed but it didn't. Won't be reading the next book.
Terrific. They are close to being together but someone else wants her and is willing to send in forces to make sure that that happens. Is the dragon real and if so what is his human counterpart? Escalating attacks, Pitch's true nature becoming apparent, marriage contracts and the true brilliance of Penny becoming clear to all. Who was responsible for the circumstances of Poppy's death? Is there a traitor in their midst? A wonderful plot, dark, twisted and schemes within schemes that will either completely confound you or be crystal clear. An addictive read and with characters that seem both real and as insubstantial as smoke.
So many questions will be answered about Penny&Pitch! But many new one will arise. Much of this book is about Penny trying not to deal with her true feelings about Drake, but if course just being ridiculous in that Penny way we love. Learning more about Drake from his prospective adds a lot to the story. So great that this series is available on Kindle Unlimited. Looking forward to the next book!
I love this series so much. The world is so interesting and I just want to know more about it, learn more and figure out how everything works together. I can see how someone could claim there isn't enough world building, because so much remains unclear, but the mystery has definitely appeal to me. And the characters are all so wonderfully complex and I just like how multifaceted they all are. This series is just really a guilty pleasure for me.
Okay, now who remembers "War of the Roses" -- the dark comedy, or maybe "Mr and Mrs Smith?" The Darkly Sweet series has the same love-hate, evil, vindictive back-and-forth as those two movies, with dark humor that prevents the reader from anticipating the next action these crazy, questionably demented characters will take. While book 2 seemed to give more "points" to Drake, Bitter Bliss is more heavily in favor of Penny Lane
Having read the first two in this series, I needed to find out what happens next. At the time Bitter Bliss was on pre-order and I got my copy, and counted the days until it delivered to my kindle. Again, I devoured this installment! The story just gets better and better. I'm waiting now with bated breath for the next book :)
Penny has DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder). She's Pitch but it was expected after all the build up from the 2 previous books. Story dragged. It certainly didn't need 3 books to reveal that Penny was Pitch.
The third installment of mages and witches. How to leave a review without spoilers... Can’t do it. You’re just going to have to read it for yourself. It’s worth it. Trust me. Can’t wait for book 4!
This was better than the 2nd one, but I don't know why I'm still reading this series. I HATE Drake Huntsman SO MUCH. I'm actively rooting against him and Penny. I know they're probably end game, so I don't know why I'm doing this to myself. UGH.
I knew it! The connection between Penny and Pitch. Still don't understand completely. Why will her mother die if she doesn't marry before she's 18? What kind of curse does she have? Who is Signore really? Now Zach is a problem...I just wanted Drake and Penny to have a HEA. What now?
I read this author backwards! I started with Arrierty - then fell into Wit. I’m finally rounding to Penny and seeing how all that built up. What a ride. I wish I had read it in order - regardless, the plot points are still so surprising.
I slammed through all the books from this world back-to-back. The 4 books and 2 novellas of Darkly Sweet, then the 2 books of Wit the Wicked, then the 3 books of Arrietty in Underland. Each series corresponds to one of the 3 dragon lords. They were all very good. I'm a big fan of this author now.
I adored the Darkly Sweet books - they were ridiculous and funny in the very best ways, with some darker urban fantasy woven through. Penny is the primary character of Darkly Sweet and I adored her. Her love interest Drake (dragonlord of Violence) is also fantastically odd.
The Wit (Whitley) books were also very good, but Wit is a harder heroine to love. I listed to some of these books on Audible for free (virtual voice narration, but not horrible.) Ian is her love interest (dragonlord of Lust).
The Arrietty books were the most violent and edgy with a lot less humor than the other books, which I suppose makes sense for Prince, the dragonlord of Death.
