The Knight Legends #5

Just One Knight

Rate this book
A warrior woman (sort of), a baker, and a love story that's out of this world...

Cinda has been baking cakes since she was old enough to measure sugar, and she’d tell you that she has a good life. A relationship with one of the sexier royal knights of Arktos City is high on the list of what’s good…but when the lady knight breaks up with her for a fairly stupid reason, Cinda needs a night out on the town to forget her pain…

Talis has been working as a stablehand in the royal stables of Arktos since she arrived in the city three years ago. She wants to be a knight more than anything else in the world, but when she gets the bad news that because of her notorious family she might not ever even get the chance to become a squire—let alone a knight—she needs a night out on the town to forget her pain…

But when her best friend, Lellie, convinces her to wear a suit of stolen armor (and “borrow” a warrior mare), it sets into motion a night of fantastical adventures, mistaken identity and a sweeping love story.

Can two women fall in love in just one night?

JUST ONE KNIGHT is a funny, sexy, romantic novel that is set in the same world as A KNIGHT TO REMEMBER, but it is a stand-alone book. It is part of Bridget Essex's Knight Legends Series: women knights, real-world high jinks, and love stories that transcend space and time.

“Just One Knight” was just the silly, light-hearted, insta-love adventure romance I was in the mood for. Narrator TJ Richards really, really!, did a fantastic job!

MC Cinda, the plucky and mildly plump baker is dumped by her girlfriend knight Asla because Cinda enjoys the fruits of her profession more than Asla likes. Cinda lets us know that ”Asla may be a faithful knight, but she is also as vain as a peacock and as shallow as a ditch. Cinda’s friend Jeene encourages her to go out for the night, and have a fun “tumble” to take her mind off Asla.

MC Talis, Asla’s stablehand, is desperate to become a knight, but can’t even get promoted to Squire because some knights, Asla included, hold her family history against her. Her best friend, Knight Lellie, talks her into going out for the night…to a pub frequented by knights, in stolen knight armor, riding a stolen knight warrior mare. Yeah….good decisions abound.

Well, over the course of a single night, we’re entertained by a pregnant mare, a willful donkey, mermaids, dragons, a twin sister, and of course, in Bridget Essex trademark form: instalove.

This is a very fun story, and is narrated in very fun fashion. While the story is part of her Knights of Arktos series, “Just One Knight” could be read as standalone - the appearances of characters from prior stories is minor. 4.5*, rounded up to 5* because it’s worth listening to again whenever I want to have an audiobook make me smile!

A lot can happen in a night, especially when you hang out with knights, talking horses and dragons.

When Talis learns that her dream of becoming a knight might not ever come true because of the family she comes from, her best friend Lellie – a knight herself – convinces her a night on the town, wearing a stolen armour and riding a very pregnant mare, is the best way to get over the disillusion. They soon meet Cinda, a baker trying to get over her knight ex breaking up with her for the vainest reason. The attraction between the baker and the woman she believes to be a knight is immediate, but the arrival of Talis’s sister, who convinces her she needs her help, turns the night into an unforeseen and dangerous adventure.

Strangely enough, this was the longest night of my life. Because of corona and lockdown, I had to stop listening six hours in (I can’t listen to audiobooks with a full house). So I started this on May 2nd and finished on June 22nd. Luckily the story is so much fun that it didn’t suffer from the overly long break. Heavier topics, such as discrimination based on gender identity or social origin, are alluded to in a very organic way, giving the story a touch of seriousness, yet never bringing the fun factor down. There’s an overall feeling of silliness and giddiness that I enjoyed a lot. While part of a series, Just One Knight can totally be read or listened to (narrated by T. J. Richards, who never disappoints) as a standalone. It was my first book by Bridget Essex and I never felt like I didn’t have the necessary knowledge to understand the story and who the characters were. It won’t, however, be my last.

Ok. I've got a few issues with this one. The entire book spans maybe a 12 hour period. There are so few scenes because of the monumental amount of inner dialog. It was distracting. I also take issue with declaring love after a few hours. Lust maybe. But love? I don't think so. Other than that it's typical Bridget saccharine gooey that is to be expected. I mean after 26 books I kinda know what to expect ya know? Anyway. It was ok. Certainly didn't wow me.

WOW!

How is it possible that this author always manages to write a story which is fascinating from beginning to end. This time her fantasy brings us back into Arktos City. The city of the beautiful knight Virago and queen Calla. A city full of beautiful lady knights but also of women who dreams of becoming a knight. So does our main character, Talis. During a night out with her friend Lellie, Talis helps a woman in need. There was an instant spark between them. A spark that quickly turns into strong feelings for each other. Before they can give into their desires, something unexpected happens. One event follows another at a fast pace and the only thing Talis can do is to offer help again. Not once but twice her help is required and Talis and her friends went on the road together, not knowing what to expect. In the meantime something beautiful blossoms between Talis and the woman she has saved from an disaster. Only a mistaken identity and the complications of that night can destroy everything. Talis know she must reveal her secret but every time she is about to tell the truth, someone interrupts her. A burning hot suprise is waiting for Talis and her friends. A surprise that can change her life totally or it is the end of everything. The author takes you into a roller coaster of actions. A roller coaster where you don't want to step out. I was spellbound by this wonderful story. It was exciting, touching, funny and full of romance. It is excellent written in a good pace and before you know it, you're at the end of the story. I highly recommend this awesome fairytale.

A hilarious stand alone addition and fifth in the series.

We are introduced to Talis a stable hand who can speak to the horses (and whom sarcastically talk back!). She is desperate to be a knight but her family history sows distrust despite her efforts to prove herself.

In town, a baker Cinda is dumped by her arrogant knight girlfriend for putting on weight.

Each of the main characters friends decide that a night on the town is what each needs to cheer them up.

Thus Cinda and Talis meet, in hilarious and adventurous circumstances which continue throughout the night!

This was a very amusing tale, with the moral that what's in our hearts is more than we appear on the outside.

Talis had the heart of a knight all along despite her circumstances. Cinda found adventure and love, strength and confidence in herself. The ex girlfriend despite appearing knightly proved herself to be selfish, vain and condescending.

A heartwarming story.

My favourite genre to read/write is spec fic, which incorporates fantasy. Especially if it happens to be sapphic and action, adventure.

A random purchase because I liked the cover and the blurb sounded fun.
I listened to this on audible. Narrated by TJ Richards (who deserves 5 stars).

A great story with a lot going on. As a 'romantasy', it was fun, enjoyable and the escapism I needed. Both main characters were well developed, drew me in and made me chuckle.

A couple of the side kicks, were interesting characters, particularly the knights sister, whom I'm hoping has a novel of her own...

I enjoy a good fantasy story. While this wasn't the usual, deep, long, convoluted and complex ones I often read, it didn't let me down.

Just the right amount of light-heartedness, filled with quirky characters, and an interesting plot.

There were mermaids, dragons, a talking donkey and of course a knight, well, a wannabe knight.

I loved the narration, which really set the story off and blended the two well together.

This was my first book by this author, and won't be my last. It wasn't an arc, freebie, or on offer.

The heroines journey, rescue, quest, forced proximity, mistaken identity.

This latest entry in Essex's Knight Legends series is a bit of a departure from the others. This time there is no real world connection, taking place and starring characters fully from Agrotera. I really hope the next one does have a real world character, but for now this was a welcome departure. That wasn't the only departure though. This time we're treated to more than one perspective, switching off between chapters. While other entries felt like a romance with adventurous stuff going on this one definitely felt like an adventure with romance on the side. While the character development was just as good as I've always come to expect from Essex and Cinda and Talis's one night love affair turned something deeper was purely heart-warming what grabbed me most was the world building. As I've mentioned in the past I'm a sucker for good world building and we learned so much about Agrotera and her many mystical races in this tale. This might be the best in show if not tied with "A Dark and Stormy Knight" and for that I highly recommend it.

Wow...this is such a good story

The Author did a wonderful job with these characters. It's write in the first person , being told by the two main characters . What an experiance. The book starts off with them both telling their stories which happen at the same time. So we get both accounts. Then with much surprise, the story really takes off when Talia meets up with her twin sister... and with a band of mismatch characters, a their, two knights, a baker, a dragon lady, a donkey and a horse. they set off on the adventure of their lives... it's so very exciting from this points... and not trying to give anything a way... there's a great battle that brings this group even closer.
I found the Author did an amazing job writing this book, it will keep you so engaged you won't want to put it down.
It's funny, it's sad I parts, it will even aggravate you. Best of all it will make you smile and feel good about your journey through this book...

A few months ago, I would never have picked this book up. Knights and such are on the list of things that always felt too removed from my current reality for me to really care about reading. But then, a book club I'm part of picked another book in this series, and… now I've been reading more of them.

I have enjoyed some of the books more, but that is probably due to my personal preferences than anything to do with Bridget Essex's talents. Coming from a "this isn't my type of book" perspective, I have really appreciated those books in the series which have involved crossing between worlds, giving part of the book a grounding in a setting that is like present-day reality. This book didn't have that aspect. It's a testament to the author that I enjoyed it anyway!

While it may not be quite as feels-inducing to me as some of the other books in the series, I do love the adventure the group ends up going on and how everything gets resolved. It's light, fun, romantic, and charming overall. My only (minor) critique is that the adventure itself seems to speed by whereas the lead up to it takes up 2/3 of the book. As usual, there are some cameos from familiar faces that are always a pleasant surprise.

Two best friends give main characters Talis & Cinda the impetus to embark on an adventure of epic proportions. Talis' gift of understanding & speaking to animals is the funniest part of the book. Dragons and fairies and mermaids, Oh my!
Quick, witty, fun loving, strong friendships, with a love story. I couldn't ask for more. Miss Essex commands her pen as she creates living landscapes, intricate details, and good comedy.
Thank you.

I’ve been reading the Knight series and this one is a bit different, because it’s much funnier than the others, almost slapstick in places. I got a good chuckle while reading to see how both the romance and the adventure turn out. There were definitely some unexpected moments at times and lots of new magical beings. These women got put through a lot. It was a fun, lighthearted read with, of course, a happy ending, at least for now.

Pretty darn good

At first I thought " boy, is this book dragging " but then and I don't know where I found that I was really enjoying the craziness with Cinda and Talis and the crazy Dragon Fane. I'm glad I read it slow and savored every moment of that night with these ladies and more. I got hooked and will read more from this author.

My favorite series!

I loved this book! This one and A Dark and Stormy knight are my absolute favorites in the Knight series. I can say many things about editing and how short the books are, all true. However, it's the knights, the adventure, and all the chivalry that always gets me with these stories. I love them!

It was ok- too tongue in cheek for my tastes

I like her other books way better. This was more along the lines of a comedy and didn't quite capture my interests. Still like her other books much more.

Just go with it

This is an adorable romance story of a knight impersonator and a broken hearted baker. I enjoyed their story but I was hoping to find out how children are born if it's a city of women. Magic? I just go with it.

Light, cute, fun, and sweet
A girl on girl rom-com. This book is sweet & silly and gets more and more improbable as it goes along. Curl up in your pajamas and disengage your critical thinking brain.

This one is a bit of a let-down compared to her other books. It's only vaguely connected to the other Knight series, it seems.
