A witch in hiding. An innocent spell. Let the mayhem begin. Hazel Hardy knows she shouldn’t tempt fate, but she’s desperate and…hello, cheap real estate. Her family’s fears don’t stop her from opening a teashop in the quaint New England village where the townsfolk once drowned her ancestor for being a witch. Unfortunately, times haven’t changed…much, anyway.

No worries. She swears she won’t stir up trouble…in a cauldron or otherwise. But then her customer’s husband turns up dead. Whispers of “murderous witch” point toward a seemingly innocent girl, and Hazel can’t resist poking her nose where it doesn’t belong.

Real trouble shows up when she meets the charming police chief, who doesn’t like witches and who doesn’t hide his attraction to her. Worse, she’s brewing a crush on him, too, and she finds she adores searching for clues to help him solve the case. She convinces herself she’ll be fine as long as they find the murderer before she accidently uses magic again or before he notices the crazy cat from her grandmother’s haunted house that’s stalking her.

I barely finished this one. The characters were lifeless and under-developed. I found a lot of the book to be repetitive. The main character acted liked a teenage airhead and the plot was extremely thin.

Hazel Hardy has made her way to Stonebridge, Massachusetts. She opens a cute teashop and makes herself at home. She has been drawn to the place despite her mom’s fear. Her once long ago grandmother was drowned by the towns people for being a witch. It seems the town still doesn’t like witches.

She keeps her head down and tries not to cause trouble. When she makes a tea delivery to a client they find her husband dead. They think the person who did it was a witch.

Things get worse when she meets the handsome police chief, Peter Parrish. He thinks witches have no place in his town but he doesn’t hide the fact he is really attracted to her. Can these two work together and solve what really happened?

I love Hazel she is funny and stands her ground or tries to. Peter throws her world into a spin every time he comes around. She fights off his attraction as she knows it will not work or not supposed to work between them. She is a witch. The way the interact makes you want to turn the page and the sub characters are just as good. The author has you wanting to know more as the story unfolds. A great start to a series. Clarbelle’s cat is fun to watch with Hazel. He is going to be a winner in this series.

Book one of Teas & Temptations series. Hazel has opened a tea shop in Stonebridge, a little town with nice people except when the topic turns to witches. The latter is why her mother told her to stay away, but she felt drawn to the town. She just won't draw any attention to herself.

Hazel has expanded her business by making deliveries and chatting with her customers as they savor a cup of tea. While she is having one of these chats with Mrs. Winthorp her husband dies of an apparent heart attack. His personal doctor shows up at the police chief's office the next day and says to look into it further, Winthorp's heart was good, it had to be murder.

In the minds of the townsfolk it had to be the maid. She's a witch. This infuriates Hazel that they accuse her without proof, and that they think witches are necessarily evil. She goes to see Rachel and tell her she's being treated unjustly. When she sees the Chief again she has a lot more information for him. Now she is determined to find information to clear Rachel and leads her to more encounters with Chief Parrish.

Quick, fun read. Novella length. I assume that the sequels will build on the possible romance between Hazel Hardy and Pete Parrish and that we'll learn more about the town and this mania they have about witches. The mystery would have been ho-hum without the romance and witchy stuff, there wouldn't have been a good start and stop point without the mystery, but together an interesting story that really clicks.

Hazel Hardy is a hereditary witch -- a good witch, and she thinks her family is paranoid when they discourage her from moving to the small town of Stonebridge, Massachusetts, which is known for its Salem-era witch killings. Surely, in the 21st century, no one believed in evil witches as the cause of misfortune? But when her client's creepy husband drops dead, Hazel is caught up in the investigation into his death -- which leads a young woman to be accused of witchcraft.

It's a novella and an introduction, so the story doesn't feel finished. But the characters are interesting, and the murderer and murder weapons were entertaining and unique (the wife poisoned her cheating husband's Viagra). I don't know what's going on with the town's modern day witchcraft preoccupation, but I suspect that if Hazel's secret is found out, it won't end well for her.

Tea for two

A really great read. Easy going, gentle but with a plot that will hook you and characters that you will fall in love with. Moving to the town might have been a mistake. Their hatred of witches is as strong now as it was years ago and she is definitely a witch. However she feels drawn to the place and therefore had opened her shop here. Her gentle life is thrown into disarray with the murder of one of the prominent members of the community and the attention of the police chief. Can they find out who killed him and can she keep her secret and heart safe?

After finishing the spell of disaster series by Leighann Dobbs, I was looking for something just as good. I finally found this one and have read 2 of them and stared a third in one night. They are such fun reads and so easy to fly through really quickly. Awesome characters, some spells, romance and murder. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series... although, I don’t want to read them to quickly because I wouldn’t know what to read after this, they are too enjoyable.

I just reread this and still love it so much!

Third reread and I still love this book!

I’m conflicted about rating this book. There are some aspects that rank high for me but there are others that make me frustrated with the author and the story.
Good stuff: In my opinion this moved at the speed of Murder She Wrote especially with the bicycle. It was a cozy mystery, there was character development, there is still mystery about characters so you want to keep going with the series. The murder plot was what you get with a cozy mystery.
Bad stuff:
—I hate witches who have to hide their abilities
—there was literally NO one in the entire town that was enlightened about not hating witches, how is that possible?
**Spoilers in the bad stuff section:
—the police chief was very pushy and did not take “no” for an answer. I understand the author wanted him to be the romantic interest and that the female main character was attracted to him. However, she schooled her reactions and was clear in her communication of not having a relationship. The police chief then ignored her completely and continued to assume they would meet up. This makes me think later in the series he will behave like Darren from Bewitched and be very hateful.
—why was the “murderer” actually being charged? She is suffering from Battered Woman Syndrome from her rapist abusive husband and the author thought the story should end with her being in a detainment facility and found guilty of murder?!?! 🤯 this book was published 2 decades after BWS was written about in psychology texts and also used in the legal systems for justice of these victimized women. If this were done in murder she wrote…MAYBE maybe I could kinda accept the ending…however in this more enlightened time of abused spouses this ending is unacceptable.
I will read the reviews for her next books in this series to see if I can tolerate reading more. I usually like the cozy mysteries with paranormal elements so this is up my alley. I just hope I am wrong about the police chief and the author is more enlightened with her characters.

Hazel moves to Stonebridge, a town infamous for its witch trials and the origin of her predecessors. There she opens up her tea shop and later on gets entangled in a murder. Alongside with the charming Chief Parrish, they try to solve the case. I enjoyed the plot and I was interested in finding out the culprit. However, Peter's attraction to Hazel was too quickly established, which is really not that bad but things were progressing fast for my liking. Out of everyone in the town too? As soon as he saw her? Nah, I don't buy into that stuff. Anyways, the mystery part was nice until the revelation. I expected something... bigger. So, the end was a little underwhelming for me. I am interested though to see more of Hazel finding out about her ancestor's history and dive more into her magic. I also need to find out when Peter learns of her little secret... It's a fun and quick read so I am curious to continue the series.

⚡Content warning: Forced rape, SA victims twice. Suicide mentioned.
Rating: ⭐
Genre: Paranormal cozy mystery

🍵 Features a tea witch in a small Massachusetts town.

Negatives:
🚫 The anti witch theme was fairly annoying and repetitive.

🚫 It's written in third person rather than first person, which feels off.

🚫 The tainted family blood thing was out of left field. Cleansing a history that the descendant didn't even have a part of?  This book is constantly striking out of left field.

🚫 Suicide, rapists and SA doesn't belong in a cozy mystery. It takes the coziness completely out of it. Not to mention, it could hurt people with PTSD. Ugh

⚡Content warning: Forced rape, SA victim.

Overall, this was pretty awful. Cozy mysteries should remain cozy. They shouldn't have rape, SA, suicide nor blaming the victim. DNF at 80%.

Once Wicked is a delightful mystery tale. It is charming and breezy in how we get to know Hazel while she is learning about her roots and the history of the town. Not everyone is charming and Hazel has to learn who she can trust. Not easy when you're involved in murder and generational distrust. You could sense the apprehension in Hazel as she had to deal with different people. It was interesting to see the interactions with the police chief, as he seemed to have a bit of his own magic working on Hazel. I especially loved the name of Hazel's shop and the banter it caused between the two.

While this is the first in the series, I really enjoyed the way this one ended. The scene was perfect. I look forward to more of Hazel, the town of Stonebridge and the Police Chief Parrish.

A Witch-phobic Town and a Nosy but Loveable Tea-Making Witch

The quaint town of Stonebridge, Massachusetts is not the best place for a witch to live. The same town that killed her ancestor in the late 1600’s still holds prejudice against witches in the present, but Hazel loves it. Although her mother warns her against the move, Hazel feels a strong need to find out more about Clarabelle Foster and her time.

I really enjoyed this short novel. It was fast-paced, suspenseful, and entertaining. It reminds me a bit of a Hallmark mystery series with a bit of paranormal thrown in. The author does a good job of painting the picture of Stonebridge, as well as its inhabitants, and I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

Magical

Hazel Hardy is a witch, who has come back to her ancestral home of Stonebridge, where they are none too accepting of witches.
She owns a tea company, and in the process of delivering some to one of her customers, the husband of the customer dies in rather compromising circumstances.
The local police chief, Peter Parrish is on the case, and Hazel just can’t prevent herself from helping the handsome widower...

An entertaining cozy mystery, with a magical witch just discovering her heritage, and a town full of people who hate witches.
If you enjoy your cozy mysteries with a soupçon of magic, then you will like this one!

Always fun, palette cleanser reads between other books! This one took me all of a couple hours to read and is a cute story of Hazel, the new Tea & Temptations owner that witnesses one of her customer's husband's death while delivering tea. With her witch senses and talents, she starts digging around for more information and unwittingly does a better job at investigating the case than the handsome Chief Parrish, who has a very obvious crush on her. My only complaint is the use of "Blessed Goddess" far too frequently as an exclamation - not because it's bad but because no one uses ANY exclamation that frequently (at least 2-3 times a chapter) 😉

Lovely witch cozy mystery

I have really delved into this sub genre lately. I enjoy the clean romantic mysteries and the witch aspect keeps it from being boring. The problem I often run into is that the authors in this genre may have good ideas, but their writing leaves something to be desired. It is always with a grain of skepticism that I try a new author, so I was pleasantly surprised to find that this book had a good plot and it was well executed. Good job and I will continue to read your books!

Slow build.

What a great story, Hazel relocated to a small town that used to be her family's home town till they left to avoid being persecuted as witches, this town was not forgiving back in the day they murdered them. That hasn't stopped Hazel from opening her shop to sell her specialist teas with just a hint of magic to help her customers, but when one of her customer's husbands is murdered everything changes and not in a good way. Wonderful characters with an absorbing storyline that brings the whole thing to life, great read, Baz.

Brilliant Series

Once Wicked (Teas and Temptations Book 1) by Cindy Stark. Witch Hazel moves back to the town where her ancestors were killed for being witches. She didn’t think the inhabitants could still hold the same beliefs but she was wrong. When someone is murdered and witch craft is suspected the inhabitants are up in arms. The police chief Peter seems to be flirting with Hazel which would have been nice except for his views on witchcraft. If she wants to stay in the town then Hazel needs to be very careful.

I was fortunate enough to have gotten a copy of this book from the Author in exchange for an honest review, which I am more than happy to provide. What a lovely cozy mystery, I liked the characters and storyline and I can't wait to see what will happen next. A great start to a new paranormal series. The only problem now is that I crave some of Hazel's tea's and wish that her shop was real and close to me.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

I seen this book as a suggestion when I was browsing looking for a new series to start and decided to take a chance. I am so glad that I did. I was completely engrossed in the story and enjoyed every moment. I couldn’t put it down. I even found myself rushing through daily chores so I could get back to reading. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Cute story

Hazel is an earth witch who opens a tea shop in her ancestral town. No one knows she's a witch. The town people murdered witches including Hazel's ancestor. To this day, they harbor hatred toward anything hinting of witchcraft. I like the premise of this mystery & how it unfolds including the attraction between the police chief & Hazel. Looking forward to the next story.

Good enough to read twice!

Okay, I confess I had forgotten I had started reading the series once before . However, it is so good , it is well worth the time to read again. Hazel and Cora and the hunky police chief Peter Parrish provide much engrossing adventure and so if ,my dear reader, you are reading this review to see if you should read then do so and you won't be disappointed! Plus you get to meet Mr Kitty!

Intriguing. Kept me guessing until the end. Everyone had a motive. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series and finding out more about the MC's ancestors. Also interested in seeing if she can change the townspeople's minds about witches. I really don't like their mindset. Not that it took away from the story or anything. I liked the story. The writing was well done. Would definitely recommend this book to friends and family.

I received a free copy and this is my honest opinion.

Interesting magical cosy mystery

This is a different witch mystery and It is really good! Imagine going to live where your ancestors were either killed or ran out of town but because they were witches and finding out the you had to hide your magic for fear of the same happening to you. Throw in a murder and a town of witch haters and it makes a great story.

a good story

I very much enjoyed reading this book. No cussing. Little adult content. I read a review that said PG and I would have to agree. Everything I like from magic to murder with a hint of romance along the way. I look forward to reading book two of this series. Definitely recommend.

Cute, sweet, clean romance

The first in a series of cute, sweet, clean romantic mysteries. Each story ties up at the end but the characters and their relationships continue on. I'm intrigued by the idea of Hazel being the descendent of one of the women executed in the Salem Witch trials. Overall a cute, fun, easy read, perfect with a cup of tea.

This is the first book in the Tea and Temptations series. It is a fun witchy story. Hazel comes from a long line of witches and moves back to the town where so many were persecuted hoping that the stigma is gone. She meets the handsome police chief and finds herself attracted to him. I enjoyed the characters and the plot. I look forward to book 2.

A tea for everyone

A nice easy read, not overly exciting but definitely not boring. There is really not much overt magic, Hazel expresses her magic using her teas. The story is complete but there are many loose ends for future stories. What is the secret behind the cat? There are some laugh out loud moments along the way.
Go ahead and read, you will enjoy.
