Special circumstances, special soldier…
Simon Blackwell ended his affair with Mariana Daniels after his life changed irrevocably on a top secret mission, but he’ll never stop protecting her. Now, he’s back on the same base where she’s working and he has vowed to watch over her only from afar…until fate steps in and changes things again.
She’s a healer with a broken heart…
Mariana was bereft when Simon walked away without a backward glance. She’s never forgotten him—or gotten over him. When he walks into her clinic, torn up and in need of medical attention, she can’t turn him away. Nor can she stop the leaping of her heart at his return.
Secrets and science experiments run amok…
Mariana has no knowledge of the dark, deadly creatures that lurk in the forest surrounding her, or of the mysterious changes that make Simon the only one who can safely defeat them. Soon, he’ll have no choice but to reveal the truth, and urge her to trust in an explosive passion that never died…

A modern day zombie story with lovers who hurt each other. It was just average. Another story chock full of sex scenes. I just wasn't into this story. 3 stars
Simon was a warrior for Uncle Sam, but meeting a young Dr scared him.
Mari was just starting out as a doctor. Young and having ideals. Being in the Navy was an adventure. She met a soldier, Simon. Weeks of whirlwind love making and fun. He was it for her, until he went on another mission. He didn't return to her. Simon went on a mission as ordered, he had planned on seeing Mari again after this. His world turned upside down. Zombies that were Marines who died in combat?? It was his team that was sent out to destroy them. He was bitten! He should've turned right away, but didn't?? Now he was on the hunt. He was at Quantico of of places, scouting them when he got seriously hurt. He dragged himself to the base clinic, finding Mari there as head doctor. She's going to be pissed at him!
Though I’m primarily into shifters and vampires and such, I absolutely love this authors other works and decided to give this series a try. I’m SO glad I did. Simon and Mari’s prior history really set the stage for their second chance romance, and it was great to see it play out. I also loved that the author had a believable cause to the zombies; something plausible that didn’t make me just shake my head. All in all, I loved it and am ready to dive into book 2!
I started this book this morning and finished it in an afternoon! I could not put this book down. It’s my first zombie read and now I want to read the whole series! I loved the characters and their stories! This book is filled with action, heartbreak, love, and passion! Definitely going to be reading a lot more books by this author!
I remember reading this when it was just a short story in an anthology but then came across it on my ereader and decided to do a read again. And was I ever happy I did. Simon's bravery in the face of overwhelming odds and his discovery of a second chance romance just made the zombie tale that much better.
I have to say I don't normally like Zombie storys but I loved this one! It was captivating, very dark in places and light and loving in others. Superb world building and Mari and Si are brilliantly written characters with a strong connecting. Highly recommended.
You’ll love this book! Great start to a new series about zombies. I loved the interaction between Simon and the heroine. Bianca D’Arc is extremely talented!
This story is absolutely brilliant!! I loved every minute of it. The author has written a great story with amazing chatacters. Military romance meets zombie outbreak.... sign me up for more!!!
I read this in an earlier form but wanted to review this version. I'm not a zombie fan but this book pulls science, military, medicine and, yes, zombies, together in an excellent way. There is the return of a lost love and great dialogue, as well as appropriate humor. I highly recommend this book to those who like urban fantasy, military and romance. The series is well connected but books can be read alone, as can all of Bianca D'Arc's books.
