In a desperate fight against insurmountable odds, mankind’s only hope is a lifer Marine with a violent past he can barely remember and a penchant for picking fights he shouldn’t win.
“Starship Troopers” meets “Jason Bourne” via "Aliens" in this gleefully addictive, full-throttle military sci-fi adventure series.
For the first time ever, the first three books in the Lucky's Marines series are collected together in one unforgettable box set.
Book 1: Lucky Universe Ambushed behind enemy lines and left for dead along with a handful of privates so green they actually respect his authority, Lance Cpl. Lucky Lee Savage has to master his inner demons, manage the ambitions of his foul-mouthed AI, and figure out what is tearing a hole in the fabric of space-time before everything goes tits up.
Book 2: Lucky Legacy Stopping an invading alien horde was one thing, but as alien races arrive and the dynamic of the universe shifts, the original conspirators among mankind’s ranks prepare to turn the tide of change back in their favor. And they have everything they need right inside Lucky’s head.
Book 3: Lucky Empire With the conspiracy now fully in power, Lucky & crew have turned into fugitives within the Empire. As an ancient enemy closes in on humankind, one last, desperate gamble is their only chance at survival — if it isn't too late already. Luck may not be on their side this time.
This series begins with a really fun book overstuffed with action surrounding an intriguing mystery centered on the gaps in the memory of our hero, Lucky. Lucky is a marine in the far future who earned his nickname by surviving where no one else does. His success has not been painless. He keeps losing memories along the way as the nanobots keep reconstructing his abused body. Lucky has an AI in his head (Rocky) who over the years has become more independent than the typical AI marines are given and the banter between Lucky and Rocky is one of the great strengths of the novel. But mostly this is a rocking book with an alien invasion happening and the key to stopping it in the parts of Lucky’s mind that don’t work very well.
It's not that things go downhill in the second and third books because the action is still there and there is good camaraderie between Rocky and his fellow marines. But the great mystery of the first novel is resolved and that sapped a lot of the excitement for me in the two sequels. They are still fun and if action is your principle love in military novels, you will be totally happy with them, but for me, I couldn’t help missing the extra umph of the first novel and so the series didn’t hold my interest as strongly in the long run.
I’ve purchased and read all three of Lucky’s stories and also the prequel “Lucky’s Shot” and even started reading the “classified subject Lee Savage” redacted copy, for government eyes 👀 only. I’m not even sure how I got it and I look forward to reading through it, even with all the government’s blacked out sentences. Back to the point. Lucky’s Universe, as well as the rest of this series, is just what military science fiction is supposed to be. Hard core brutality towards any and all evil alien 👽 entities. This series can be wrapped up with one word, a word that all sci-fi lovers and nerds will recognize as the single most important word when it comes to action sci-fi. The word that describes Lucky’s universe is “FUN”! This entire series is just plain fun to read. Yes it’s bloody, brutal and definitely a hard “R” rating, but even so it was a blast to read. Just plain FUN! Do yourself a favor if you love sci-fi with nonstop action, great character depth and environments that are off the charts, read this series! They’re also extremely inexpensive thanks to the author, who obviously cares more about the fans and readers then himself. Thank you Joshua!
The situations are more than overwhelming, there’s no reason for Lucky to survive his predicaments. But it’s good fun in a superhero kind of way and the creative tableau engaging. Good sci-fi thrill ride.
