This book is set in North Texas in 1873 where Anna Sanchez lives on the Rancho Sanchez with her Mother and stepfather. She has learned how to run the ranch with her stepfather and the hands. Hoping to one day run the ranch if something happens to her stepfather. Well that day is here. Ducking a bullet and witnessing her ranch hands all being gunned down or shot with arrows she realizes that she is in trouble. Thinking it is an Indian attack she realizes it is not when Wade Phillips kidnaps her and tells her that her mother has traded him the ranch and her for the money to leave with. Knowing how heartless her can be it isn't hard to believe she would do something so cruel. Now Anna has to figure out how she can escape and return to the ranch and her stepfather.
Paul Danial's is searching for the man who killed his Mother and just wants to go home to visit with his sister for Christmas until he comes upon a bloody seen at a ranch. First thinking it is an Indian attack but looking closer he realizes that isn't what it is, just made to look lake one. Finding a picture of a little girl his fear is that whoever did the killings has her. With the help of some solders they set out to retrieve Anna. Little does he know that his life is fixing to change forever and he isn't going to make it to his sister's for Christmas.
This story has such depth with the characters fighting for their life every step of the way. It is definitely a page turner and held my full attention.
