Victor Shelby and his tribe of beautiful alien women have built a fortress to keep themselves safe, but when they encounter another tribe of survivors, Victor must leverage his dinosaur-taming abilities to negotiate either peace or violence.
The author is double line spacing the text to inflate the page count. Even accounting for that, it seamed much shorter than book. There was not nearly as much going on or progression of the story. If I had been paying for the book outside of Prime, I would have felt shorted.
I really didn't like the MC this time around and liking the MC is one of the most crucial parts for me to like the book as a whole. He has become so arrogant! He kept talking about how all men on Earth dream of women like the ones around him and that all women want to look like them. While it is true that beautiful people are treated better in our society than everyone else, what counts as "a beauty" differs quite a lot from region to region. And maybe women are pushed to conform to that standard. But I'm sure individuals, men and women, have their own image of the perfect "woman" and all women wouldn't change themselves into the MC's big boobed ideal "if only they could".
In previous books I could believe that the MC just happens to run into women that fits his ideals perfectly, he was living his own personal fantasy. In this one however... Well, the MC is so full of himself that I'm surprised he hasn't popped like a balloon. Instead of someone stabbing him with a needle and maybe getting some humility into the boy, he is constantly rewarded for is aweful behaviour.
So, I won't be reading book 4 if one is released. I also won't shame anyone for enjoying this book, because I wanted to enjoy it too, I really did. This series just isn't fun anymore. :(
And yet again, Trel save the day! No wonder she's the main wife. The story is advancing and we realize that dinosaur land is even more dangerous than we thought. The beasties aren't the only danger, but the other survivor too!
I just finished book 3 and now I’m ready to leave my review after giving it some thought.
The pros of this book are as follows: I really loved Trel in this book as we see more growth from her as a character. She is learning that she can’t be bossy all the time and that she must be patient with the other girls, especially with the newer ones. Her fun and witty attitude brings a sense of humor to this book which I do rather appreciate.
Other then that we finally have our heroes travel somewhere that isn’t the lake or river. Instead they go a long ways across plains and more jungle to get to the ocean and to a salt query. While along the way they do tame five new Troodons. They are fun and playful creatures and add diversity to Victors growing number of dinos.
The last pro was that our tribe of people finally meet another tribe and that’s it.
Now the cons and the reason why I gave this book a one star. This was out of the three books the most boring. Even with all the Dino fights that’s all they are, just a copy and paste of previous fights with no sense of danger, because they have a male triceratops named Tom who’s kill count is more then I can remember. In short Tom is OP and needs to die for our survivors to feel a sense of dread. Preferably by a Tyrannosaurus ripping off his head, don’t get me wrong I love the Trike, but this thing alone has killed numerous large carnivores and other survivors. Which brings me to why this story seems so boring now. Victor hasn’t lost yet.
This is a pretty large and important con to me, since I believe firmly that characters must lose from time to time and even come away from a fight bloody and bruised. It keeps that sense of danger and improvement that our characters need to realize and be ready for. The once deadly and intimidating Utahraptors that took down two brontos aren’t even terrifying anymore.
Another con is the summary of the book. It makes it sound like Victor and his group are struggling against another tribe. This can’t be more far from the truth. They encounter a tribe yes, but not until the very end of the book and it’s brief. They don’t come back to this tribe until they get word that this tribe is being attacked to which they come to their aid and kill all fifteen of the attackers. All in one chapter. Without a single causality or wound on Victors side. Very stupid.
Now lastly my last problems with this book are the two new characters, the drag that all these books have in common and Sheela. I won’t go into any other nitty gritty stuff that made me dislike this book even more, but these three got me the most turned off. Sheela to start off with has lost all development after in the first chapter of this book after she had sex with Victor! For two books she has stated that she can’t fall for him even though she wanted to, because Victor has to beat her mate in battle. She is so amazingly loyal throughout all the books to her traditions, but that all went out the door when she had sex with Victor. Her character development was ruined and we hardly even have anything from her in this book, due mostly to the fact of the two new characters, Emerald and Liapha taking up too much of the spotlight. This is why I was nervous when this author kept adding new characters. It’s too much for such a small book!
And lastly the drag, even Trel said at one point that she was so confused and had a hard time remembering things, because all the chapters were them talking about how they needed to do this and that and how were they supposed to do this. Again, you don’t need to tell this all to the audience. We don’t need to read about them wanting an outhouse and soap, while trying to get a stone table, and put up platforms.
Needless to say I’m taking a break from Tamer: King of Dinosaurs. I may return to read more about it, but this book took it out of me to even care. I think I’ll take a little bit off, but I don’t know if I’ll come back to read anymore of this series if it’s going to be the same thing.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
So I just burned through Tamer books 1-4 and have decided to give them all one review so I'll just copy and paste this for all the books. On the upside, no spoilers since I'll I'll only be talking in generalities.
First, this is a "harem" book, which I know some people are sensitive about. I'm only sensitive about disrespectful portrayals of women and the women involved in this story are aliens so the author is perfectly able to justify the harem based on the women's alien backgrounds. Author also goes out of his way to emphasize the women's other competencies, like intelligence. Still woman after woman seeks admission into the harem and, over the course of four books, it gets a little bizarre and tedious. Personally it would have made more sense to me to have several of the women just not be interested in that type of relationship but so far none seem likely to abstain.
Second, the first couple of books, if memory serves (I did blow right through them) were more along the lines of travel journals. The significance of this this is that travel journals are all about the journey so a big climax isn't required. Books 3 & 4, while still taking the travel journal approach, end on cliff hangers. Books are not tv shows and a cliffhanger in a book either means the author lacks writing ability, wants to milk his readers for extra money or both. The travel journal approach lessens my outrage at such crappy authorship, enough so that I decided to stick with a 4 star rating, but I could definite see how someone would give these books lower ratings.
One of the things the author does well is spread mild humor through out his books. The MC can magically "tame" animals so when he tames a group of five, three male and two female, he names them Scooby, Shaggy, Fred, Velma and Daphne and allows the MC to latter quip about how someone didn't get away with something due to those darn kids, much to the confusion of his alien harem.
One thing that has both good and bad points is that this is a non-standard litRPG. The people aren't playing a game but aliens have given them a HUD that tells them their strength, etc. But no one knows the rules so no one is strategically leveling up. It gets pretty annoying to have the main character repeatedly say throughout four books that he doesn't even know how his tamer ability works. However, without that aspect the characters focus on day to day survival and so it gives the story a real "Swiss Family Robinson" vibe that I enjoyed.
Bottom line: This book won't be for everyone, even litRPG fans, but it is better than a lot in this genre. It is just too bad the author doesn't understand that books are not meant to have cliffhanger endings.
The Tamer novels are not great literature. They are not deep. They do not probe any part of the human psyche other than Everyman's desire to have multiple beautiful women in his thrall. BUT... They are rollicking good fun!
Earle skirts the man/dino coexistence problem with the alien abduction theme. If humans never coexistence with dinos, then plunk the humans on a world of dinos. That's the premise to be accepted. I accept it, because it's fun.
Then the premise of every abductee having a VERY special skill. I can accept that easily. Look at just our own human race. Examples of singular skill abound. Einstein, Jesse Owens, Ghandi, Schwartzenegger, Michael Phelps and on and on. Singular individuals with singular talent for singular things. Go with that and amp it up a bit.
As for the multiplicity of breathtaking beauties surrounding Victor. Well... Mr. Earle might have some self-esteem issues, but hey, don't we all? If he chooses to surround his Average Joe hero with beautiful, talented, sexy, loving women who are happy to share him and show no jealousy in the ranks, who am I to argue? It IS fiction, is it not?
I look forward to more of the Tamer stories. They are captivating, charming, entertaining, easy to read, and just a little bit spicy.
And I just LOVE the impossibly specific cover art!
Like I've said on the previous books, these are plain old fun. Earle is an entertaining writer and keeps me engaged in the story. He's also pretty damned funny. The part that might throw people off is the whole harem fantasy angle, but let's face it, it's all just fantasy.
A few things that I will quibble about: The books are too short. Honestly, two of these could be condensed into one, but whatever. It makes for fun short reading, and I don't mind paying a little bit more for another book. The other thing I have an issue with is the stakes. There really isn't any threat that Victor can't overcome. He never loses. Like I mentioned before, this story reads like a fantasy (not like the a Fantasy genre novel, but a literal fantasy someone is having.) The action gets intense but you know that Victor will always win and nobody will ever die. The stakes are never threatening. For me, if things took a serious turn, and real life stakes came into play, this story would become much more satisfying.
As with his previous two entries into this series, Tamer 3 was fantastic! It continues to remind me of the video game, Ark: Survival evolved, and that's a wonderful thing.
This series is full of survival excitement as well as twists and turns that are not always expected. The author is fantastic at what he does and I have enjoyed pretty much everything of his I have read.
If you enjoyed the previous two entries in this series, I can guarantee you will enjoy this one just as much as it is filled with excitement, adventure, surviving, building, expanding, growing, beautiful women, a badass main character, and of course, a whole bunch of wicked awesome dinosaurs!
Minor spoiler which is covered in the book synopsis: this book contains other survivors that are not under Victor's leadership. I really liked how this turned out and it made this entry that much more enjoyable.
Continue to love this series I think there is something magical about the concept of building a home and a community from scratch. This book continues that, writ large against the background of the dinosaur age.
The aliens that continue to make appearances are plausible and have interesting characteristics.
I enjoyed the primitive survival around building the fort, firing clay, and constructing weapons.
The stress and challenge around encountering new arrivals and other camps, and balancing between risk and reward and possibility for peace vs. hostility continues to be interesting and well handled.
Getting hard to keep track of all the names as we have 12 dinosaurs and 6 survivors. Victor, Trel, Galmine & Theela and new permanent survivor members in Liapha, Pink Hair, and Green Serpent woman.
Victor continues to succeed. This is exactly the book that it tries to be. It is exciting, moves quickly and has a nice combination of character development and interaction. The addition of the new characters, Liahpa and Emerald, add new abilities and dynamics to the group. The continued addition of new dinosaurs, and further evolution of Victor's current dinosaur abilities, makes his tamer skill interesting and keeps it fresh. The development of the new characters, their new abilities and the current characters becoming more adept with their own abilities is a fun concept for the book. As Victor develops his dinosaurs into a more cohesive group and exploits each dinosaurs abilities and skills. With the finding of the new tribe, and the potential for multiple new characters and skills, I am excited to see how this impacts Victor's tribe dynamic and his interaction with the women.
I gave a 5-star rating because these things seem to be a pass-fail situation. I honestly wish it could have been a little bit longer, and not just with more dinosaur battles. I like the fact that more interesting characters have been introduced, but I didn't like the mute character. It seems like an unnecessary complication. I gave a five star rating because these things seem to be a pass fail situation and he most definitely passed. I honestly wish it could have been a little bit longer, and not just with more dinosaur battles. I like the fact that more interesting characters have been introduced, but I didn't like the mute character. It seems like an unnecessary complication.
I'm continuing to read this series, but I'm unsure about the "harem" aspects. It is mentioned in the reviews, so it has not come as a surprise, but as I've aged I'm not sure how i should feel about the situation. That being said, that is my own personal hangup, and we'll let that part stop there. I am liking the different looks, types of humanoids, the use of the dinosaurs, the creation of a family, the differing dynamics between the characters, etc. I have read most of the star justice series, and can see similarities, but by wrong this one in a prehistoric setting, keeps the two series distinctly different. Certainly enjoying it enough to read the next book.
I have a love-hate relationship with this series. I love that it is so easy to read and captures my interest, but I hate that it's over so quickly. Vince and his group continue to grow and enhance their living conditions and fight the good fight against predators and begin to encounter other survivors. There are a few issues that prevented me from issuing a higher rating. The main reason is that tighter editing is needed as there were grammatical and spelling errors throughout. However, I do appreciate that the story is becoming more complex as the series continues and I can't wait to read the next installment.
We Got some base building, decent fights , character growth, One male (besides) mc that did not seem bad which (not surprisingly) did not survive. I am conflicted about the mc. He acts like the clear ego boost he gets from the females has no impact on how he acts. It's always "we did a great job" and never "I did a great job". His background did not give a character with such unselfish and great leader experience. But he just suddenly is. It would have been more interesting to see him grow to a leader, rather than him staying the same and the women coming more compliable which is how it has been now.

Now this is #3 in his series. His plot line continues to expand with each new book. Likewise his characters are being expanded and added to with every twist and turn. As always Michael-Scott has an excellent understanding of his readers. Action is fast paced, and nonstop. His humor knows no bounds. Consistently he delivers an extremely high level of entertainment for any and all who want a work of a writer that has as much fun constructing his work as we who are reading it.
Funny thing is Mr Earle writes probably faster than this old guy can read it.... Thanks M-S for improving my life.
The premise of this thing is excellent. Though if you're gonna build a fort in a forest of giant trees you will never be able to convince me that not going the tree-fort route is the proper way. If you can't have a cave-fort, a tree-fort is the obvious second choice. Not down in the mud. Dinos poop in the mud you know.
(said poop is not explained, lots and lots of talk about the wall, but nothing about ... waste-management >_> )
Also, the MC is not suffering from any inclination to roll over and whimper. This is pleasing in itself.
I just finished Tamer 3. It was just like Tamers 1 & 2, a whole lot of fun! Michael-Scott Earle consistently writes quality stories. It’s comforting to know that, when I buy one of his next-in-series books, I will not be disappointed. I like that in an author.
If you’re new to the worlds of MSE, count yourself lucky. You have a lot of good reading ahead of you.
So this is book three of the tamer series and have to say that with each novel i have read. the story gets better and more personal every time. This is the fantasy equivalent of "The Survivor". I will honestly say I had some misgivings about if this would be worth the read. But i was mosy satisfied. I do hope in the next book covers a more that just a few days span in dinosaurland. I am awaiting the next adventure with anticipation.
This series always starts out slightly awkward and slow but then it ramps up so quickly you forget about any of its short comings. Hot Diggedity, is there anything more fun then watching a dude take the world on with an army of dinosaurs?! This entry into the series was another awesome addition and while it isn't as rpg-ish as most litrpgs there's definitely a feeling of progress. I loved it.
Darn it all, another cliffhanger! MSE does it every time! Gets you really rolling along with the story and bang, you have to wait for the next book! Of course you will because, let's face it, its a good story! I would advise anyone interested in reading this book to read Tamer 1 and Tamer 2 first. If you've already read them then you know what to expect! Thanks for another great tale MSE!
Our group is maturing. Growing as a group, growing as individuals, and learning to better support each other. This book is an excellent addition to the series.
Well written and edited, it successfully combines a bunch of genres, and is just plain fun and satisfying to read. Buy the book; read the series! Highly recommended.
Victor just cant get a break as his plans for increasing his and the woman's safety goes awry with bigger and more intelligent dinos seeking to ruin all their gains. Its going to take more help, more intelligence and skills, amd more Loving from the woman to get through and MSE shows us how as his impressive use of preindustrial tech in a stone age world helps save the day
Really more of the same. So, great news for anyone who likes the first 2 books. Which I did.
More dinosaurs and women. Developing their base is also kind of interesting. A bit of a cliffhanger at the end, though.
I'm personally very excited to find out what happens next. I feel the next book may be a crossroad for me, if it's good I'll continue reading, if not, I may stop. Though, given the author's track record, I'm pretty sure I'll keep reading.
As always the prolific king of of violence, sex, and incredible story telling delivers! MSC is a phenomenal story teller, and world builder. You can't go wrong by choosing one of his MANY works, Tamer 3 is another smashing success, by far one of my favorite series, and honestly I need more. Bring on Tamer 4, 5, 6 PLEASE!
Tamer king of dinosaurs 1 2 & now 3 are really good. I like the uniqueness of the species of humanoids and dinosaurs. All mse books are very entertaining and this one exceeded expectations. MC is not a wuss n complaining is minimal by all characters.
This was another great installment in this series. Great fort building, and exploration. There was a perfect balance of action and narrative. I worry about the MC maybe being a little naive, but that is only at one particular time (no spoilers). Overall 9.5 out of 10
This book continues the trend of picking up where the last left off and turbo charging through the next few weeks.
The dinosaurs continue to be varied and we final start to see more survivors beyond the core group. Im enjoying how each person on the world has a unique power and how each new race is different then the next. Its becoming a bit like a Star Wars catina.
I've read the three books so far and can't wait for the next on the series. I like the series so far, the main character is growing with each book and each of the women on his harem has her own style and quirks. I would like to see more of Sheela in the story. I'm a geek and Otaku a cat woman is a dream come true
Love reading MAE's books. They keep you turning pages waiting for the next turn of events. The bad thing is when your caught up with the author you'll be waiting for the next one and most of us that have read his books don't want to wait. Fortunately he is fast, works hard no doubt, but it's well worth the wait.
I have read all the Tamer novels and it truly is a f...up world setting. I would not have survive two second after being drop there. This series really draws you in and may you root for Victor. I don't have a favorite girl yet but I hope he catches them all like Pokemon.
