A humorous take on women's fiction with just the right amount of romance and suspense to leave you wanting more...
Single, thirty-something Emily Potens would just as soon stay on her couch with a pillow over her head than face what her life has become. In a downward spiral of misfortune, she’s lost everything she holds dear—her parents, her job, her home…even her cat. Falling through the porch of the decrepit sorority house at which she now works is only the icing on the cake. And then she meets Michael, with those deep blue eyes...
Determined to start over, Emily throws herself into her new life. While learning the finer points of adulting, such as how to live on a budget and how to get a man that’s not gay, Emily begins to unravel the mystery surrounding her parents’ untimely death—the catalyst of her own misfortune. But as she gets closer, Emily must ask herself if she’s willing to risk her own life, and a new chance at love, to learn the truth. Because sometimes, digging up the past can have deadly consequences.
Maggie Aldrich is an avid reader, freelance writer, and yoga instructor who tends to catastrophize all situations.
"Good grief, you should become a writer, you're always making stuff up!" her family said. And so, she did.
Winner of the 2017 Bess Streeter Aldrich Short Story Competition - Adult Division, Maggie lives on an acreage in middle America with her husband, daughter, cats, and other various unattended wild animals.
With her life turned upside down, no money and no job Emily had to figure some things out and fast. She went for a job as a sorority house mom so she had a place to stay and money coming in. Now all she had to do was work on finding out what is going on with her estate from her parents.
I read this book in one day. It’s such a fun book that has lots of great elements; humor, suspense and a relatable main character that really drew me into the story. I’m hopeful there’s more to come about Emily!
Really enjoyed this book. I like the romance, characters, setting and writing style of the author. It was a fun read and once I got into it, it was hard to put down!
I wrote this book, so of course I love it! It's Women's Fiction with a little bit of humor, romance and suspense—because we could all use more humor and romance in our lives...and everyone loves a little bit of mystery. It's a perfect summer read. Happy reading!
30-something Emily Potens has always been able to rely on a few constants in her life: a cushy place to live, a nice allowance from Daddy, and an endless supply of designer shoes. Aside from the gay college boyfriend debacle, her life has been a fairy tale.
But when her parents die a mysterious death amidst a scandal that ruins her dad’s image, Emily’s world starts to turn upside down. The hits just keep on coming when she finds herself jobless, homeless, and so pathetic that even her cat Daisy runs away. Emily’s life has become a bad country music song. Out of options and desperate, she takes the last job on earth suited for an only child who is roommate and responsibility averse – sorority house mom.
Emily must now move back to her old college town and learn to live with ten other girls in an old, falling-down shack that the sorority has been left with after their own scandal nearly ousted them from campus. Together, the girls and Emily wade through the next year, rehabilitating in both house and spirit, fending off smarmy frat boys, testing the waters with a (straight) love interest, and working with a crazy private investigator to finally learn the ugly truth behind her dad’s dealings. But the truth never comes without risk…
I loved this book. Fun little romance with a bit of mystery. I especially liked this book because my daughter was in a Sorority and I was not keen on her joining. I had some of the preconceived notions mentioned in the book.
I received a copy of this book to review but I was not financially compensated in any way. The opinions expressed are my own and are based on my observations while reading this novel.
This was a lovely way to spend a cold, wintry day snuggled under a quilt—escape into this funny, thoughtful, and very human lovely story about new love, old relationships, self-love, and friendships. The protagonist isn’t perfect nor easy to love at first—but the best characters always have depth and rough edges. Warmed my heart. Well done!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Maggie Aldrich's main character Emily comes across as a real person dealing with difficult situations for which she is totally unprepared. I loved the setting. Living in Texas myself, the descriptions of the locales were "right on". The mixture of humor, sorrow, romance, and mystery kept me coming back for more. I did not want to see the book end. It deserves 5 stars. I received a copy of this book to review but I was not financially compensated in any way. I just finished this book and LOVED it! It was the perfect summer read - light, funny, and just enough mystery and romance that I didn't want to put it down. The author has a charming, witty and clever writing style that kept me coming back for more. Several parts had me laughing out loud! The characters were well developed and the descriptions of locations were spot on - I felt like I was right there with "Emily" as the story unfolded. This book took me out of my every day chaos and into a light-hearted reprieve while I was reading. I can't wait for more!
That this book is the author's first book is very surprising; she writes as though her work has been being for several decades.
For myself, the book started a bit slowly. But then, she did a great job of character building and story environment; totally redeeming the slow start. And I especially loved the ending. Thank you, Ma'am.
This isn't my usual genre but the characters are so well developed and the story kept me going. I read the whole thing in one day because i couldn't wait to see what happened!
I picked this book up during a free giveaway. To be honest, this isn't the type of book I would normally read, but at the time I thought a light romance could be fun. The story is about a 30-something slacker named Emily, a trust-fund girl with little ambition working an easy job and living in a cute bungalow partially funded by her parents. Her parents disappear on a return trip from Louisiana (the story takes place in Texas) and are presumed dead. Right before their death, her parents made a bad investment in some land, which got the estate assets frozen and cut Emily off. Add to that her job disappearing because the owners decided to close shop, and Emily has quite a predicament to deal with. She lands a job and a place to stay when she goes back to her old college to be house mom to her sorority. It seems the sorority house had its own scandal and, like Emily, needed to be rebuilt.
There was a little bit of a mystery involved, as Emily was trying to find the people responsible for defrauding her parents, but this was mostly a romance between Emily and Michael, a hunky carpenter hired to fix up the sorority house. Like a modern Jane Austen story, their first meeting didn't go over so well, and she started out thinking Michael was a jerk, so naturally she fell for him later. There was also the heroine having to start over and discover just what kind of girl she really was. Like I said, it was a fun summer romance kind of read, no big surprises at all. I gave it 4 out of 5 because the story did drag in a few places, and more than once I shouted at Emily for being so dumb! (Yeah, I do talk to/yell at characters in books, doesn't everybody?) It's not a very big book, but I'm also not a very fast reader. I got it read in a few days, but most readers wouldn't need more than a day. If you are in the mood for a not too complicated romance, and/or like Austen-like stories, I think you would enjoy this book.
Honestly, this book is all my favourite things in fiction. Emily is strong and determined, even when she doesn't realize it. I loved the bits of humour that made me chuckle. Women's fiction with a strong lead character, romance, and laughter... what's not to love? I'm excited for the other Maggie Aldrich books on my TBR!
It’s All Greek to Me is a cute cozy mystery. It follows the genre standards in terms of the “chatty” narration. The writing is very descriptive. There’s a lot going on with the main character. The mystery is something hanging over her head, but it is not the primary focus of much of the storyline.
Ms. Aldrich did a great job including some plot points that subtlety added to the suspense and reminded readers that the book is a mystery. The book will appeal to fans of Mary Kay Andrews’ cozy mysteries.
From questionable best friends, left-behind sorority sisters, and contractors, It’s All Greek to Me is filled with delightful characters. The storyline alludes to the main character’s previous snobby attitude as a trust fund baby, but I didn’t see that in the character. Life is hitting her with punch after punch, but she takes it in chin and keeps on swinging. There were plenty of characters to like and dislike. Each one added greatly to the storyline.
It’s All Greek to Me is a quick, fun read, and it has an intriguing ending that could easily segue into a sequel (not a cliff hanger)! Ms. Aldrich’s debut novel is a delight, and I look forward to reading more from the author.

This is a story about a girl that lost her parents at a young at a young bur goes through so many trials, has no great people skills and finds herself meeting challenges every day. Its a warm and fuzzy story. At first when you meet Emily you probably won't care for her but as she grows and develops more, you start to enjoy her. I enjoyed this book from start to finish, it was an excellent read with romance, mystery, and some suspense.
This is a thoroughly enjoyable read. The main character, Emily, is very well-written and developed so you are immediately engaged with her story. And you are rooting for her. The plot moves along at a good pace and becomes a real page turner during the last third. This book was a lot of fun to read!
This is a fun, quick read - a little romance, a little mystery, and lots of wit. The story is compelling, and the characters are well-developed and totally accessible. You immediately care about the protagonist and the situation she finds herself in. I look forward to the next book (please let there be a "next" book!).
I really enjoyed this sweet mystery romance. There's minimal angst and just enough of a mystery for it to feel like a Hallmark movie. And for me that's a win!! Sweet moments with sprinklings of humor and silliness make this a great light read for the summer.
Such a cute book. Emily lost everything she holds dear—her parents, her job, her home…even her cat. And her dad made a big mistake buying land, so she has lost her inheritance.
This was an interesting combo of things in a book to me. Part romance, part suspense, part mystery, part ... I don't even know.
The main character, Emily, was not that lovable to me at the start of the book but she grew on me as her character developed and I knew more of her back story.
An easy summer read with some fun twists and turns.
I enjoyed this book very much! And I am happy to report only a few typos. Not exactly a cliff hanger ending but it does pave the way for the next in line. I read it very quickly which is a hat's off to the author since I could've put it down. I am very inclined to seek out the next book.
