After reading the first few chapters, I quickly realised two things: 1. Carmel Harrington is an author to watch and 2. I should have bought the Kleenex in bulk.
I found myself utterly consumed not only with the emotional storyline and Grace, the book’s main character, but also with her amazing group of friends. They surround their sick friend like a warm security blanket, their devotion keeping her warm through the cold, unforgiving months of her illness, demonstrating what true friendship is all about. They provided many of the book’s laugh-out-loud moments and I honestly wanted to keep them for myself at the end.
The anchor of this friendship is Grace. She’s a beautiful character inside and out, maternal to a fault and completely undeserving of the plight fallen upon her. As a reader, you’ll eat her up and hope against hope that she’ll come out fighting. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not all doom and gloom and some happiness comes her way, but that’s all you’ll get from me as I don’t want to spoil this wonderful story.
I cried a lot whilst reading but the final few scenes had me in pieces. The characters’ dialog during this time is so heartfelt, it’s almost as if Harrington paused in her writing, took a steadying breath and then proceeded to pour all her emotions into every single word. It is a remarkable read full of love, family and courage and is a book not to be missed.

Oh, this book! This book had me crying big, horrible, ugly tears on the bus… and all the sniffling and snorting that comes with a good cry. This book absolutely broke my heart and made me want to go cuddle my husband until he couldn’t stand it any longer.
Single mother Grace Devlin has been diagnosed with cancer and her only hope is a bone marrow transplant from a genetic match. Grace is adopted and her birth mother has rejected her desire to reconnect leaving her feeling disappointed and hopeless. With Jack, her son, to take care of and her ex Liam making a return appearance in her life, she rallies herself and refuses to give up her fight against her disease. With a cast of characters providing support and comic relief, Grace begins a journey of discovery to find not only her birth parents but herself.
There’s no doubt that Beyond Grace’s Rainbow is an emotionally charged read–but it’s so emotional because you can’t help but get invested in each character’s situation. Harrington does a fantastic job of making the reader care, not just about Grace and her struggle with cancer, but also about each secondary character, all of whom have their own spinoffs in the storyline.
Liam, Grace’s former love interest and the father of her child was one of my favourite characters. A former alcoholic, he’s now reformed and can’t get over his love for Grace and his desire to be a part of his son’s life. His love for Grace was beautiful and pure and made me sigh in mock-jealousy more than once.
I also adored Tom and Gerry (love the pun), a gay couple who provide a bit of lighthearted relief to the story. Gerry is as camp as you like but the sweetest person ever and I found myself wishing I had a friend like him in my life.
Grace’s struggle with finding her birth parents, a supporting plot-line to her cancer diagnosis and treatment, kept me in suspense and guessing to the final reveal. I didn’t expect Harrington’s little twist there and was genuinely shocked with the finale and ending of the book.
Beyond Grace’s Rainbow is a bittersweet, quietly brilliant novel that will make you cry, laugh and cry all over again.
I was a bit put off of this book due to it's subject matter for various personal reasons but I am glad I read it. There were genuinely funny and heart warming scenes and the characters are great. It never gets too maudlin, but of course there are heart breaking parts too. I did find the writing style a little odd sometimes and the pacing seemed strange too occasionally but these are minor niggles. I can't say that all of the plot points took me by surprise and I guessed about the father even before he really came into it, but I did enjoy this book a lot.
Spoiler Alert: Beyond Grace's Rainbow is the story of Grace Devlin battling her way through a terrible form of cancer: Leukemia. From the first scene in the doctor's office, when she has a very human "out of body" experience, you will be on her side and eager to take her journey with her, no matter how painful it might be. She's surrounded by a colorful cast of characters: a wide range of types of friends and her core family. The author skillfully uses their points of view, and their backstories to illuminate Grace's story. She's lucky to be supported by the wryly named Tom and Gerry, two gay friends, who make a lovely May/December-Felix/Oscar couple. The great thing about their differences, is that it just WORKS. Level-headed Tom keeps the group, including our Grace, in balance, while Gerry is the mouthpiece for ever type of emotion there is. He functions to call out the feelings in the story. Again, clever on the part of the writer. Tara is Grace's cousin, and best friend. She doesn't always wear her heart on her sleeve. She's softened and tempered by her husband, Sean, the teammate with whom Grace has sung competitive Karoake for years, but never sparked with despite his great qualities. Abbie is the chick-littiest of the group. Pretty, thin, with a dreamy career but always a bad boyfriend, despite her merits. This team backs Grace through her fears and struggles. Despite all of their imperfections, the group buoys one another up (Like on "Friends," but not as madcap, obviously). The hardest part of the whole book for me is the fact that Grace has a young son. Nothing is more heartbreaking than suffering your child's suffering. Grace has enough to deal with, but protecting her son is job one. As a single mother, it's all on her. Or so she thinks, until Jack's dad, Liam, reappears. He's not altogether welcome, and serves to stir the pot and worsen the storm at first. But every kid needs a dad, and Grace has always selflessly understood that.
I enjoyed this book for it's humanity. It's very raw, and I warn you: You will cry. But it also has heart and humor, and reminds us that the only point of being on this earth is to connect and to enjoy our time while we have it. I promise after you read this, the way she has of dealing with rainbows will be forever a part of you.
Carmel Harrington is a great storyteller, and she has a casual and friendly way of drawing you in, sitting you down, and telling it like it is in her own unique way. I expect more from this author, and can already see a row of her books on the shelves at Wal-Mart or Target. I will be there, buying every one.
This book should come with a health warning as it will tug at your at your every emotion, your heart strings and then you will be laughing out loud! I was really blown away by the the insightful depth to which the author consistently wrote with. I feel that all the characters are now my best friends which is rare for me.
This book is an excellent read as it contains everything, from the roller coaster emotions you experience, friendships, relationships, humour extremely witty, romance, love, laughter, tears, to thought provoking situations, to the silent scream of ' oh no please no' as you turn onto the next page. But hey you will just have to go and read it for yourself!
I must admit I am really looking forward to reading more from this new up and coming author Carmel Harrington if her debut book is anything to go by. It was exceedingly well written from start to finish. For me personally I am looking forward to reading it in paper back, as in a way it has that 'modern day classic' feel to it as you could read it over and over again, pass it among your family, friends and never bore of it, as it will always be current. Yes I am contradicting myself now, from 'classic to always current' but that surely speaks volumes of Beyond Grace's Rainbow..
The last few reviews I've done haven't been very successful so for my next review book I wanted something good but I wasn't expecting this!
All I can say about this book is 'WOW'! I could easily do a three word review on this and it would be 'Read it, now'! It's a book of all extremes, you'll either be crying with laughter or crying with sadness.
It revolves around Grace, a thirty-something single mum to Jack. Jack's father is an alcoholic and although he provides for him, he hasn't ever seen him. Grace, feeling unwell, goes to the Doctors where she's diagnosed with leukemia. All her friends step in to help with Jack.
Her friends are a lively bunch, there's Abby, an artist, desperate for love. Tom and Gerry (geddit?), the gay couple who are a delight to read about, Tom is the strong dependable type while Gerry is much more flambouyant. Then there's Sean and Tara, a doctor and nurse respectively, they are trying for a baby.
This is a book that covers two emotive issues, cancer and adoption, on the cancer issue it just gives you enough medical information but without overwhelming you, you do get an excellent sense of what's happening with Grace's treatment. With the adoption issue, every case is different yet I found this was handled sensitively.
There's so much I want to say about this book but won't because I'll give the plot away. The characters are all identifiable, all typical characters that you would find in a book like this. It focuses on strong friendship and how people help each other out when the chips are down.
A powerful debut novel, a book that will stay with me for a long time. I don't recommend this book. I insist you read it, I promise you it won't let you down.
Kimsesizim demiyorum.
Asla yalnız bırakmıyorlar, Grace bu süreçte aşkını tekrar buluyor, Grace'in derdini beraber omuzlanıyorlar.
I absolutely loved this book. As this was the Author's debut book, I wasn't sure what to expect but purchased it anyway as I was looking for a good girly book. Well I couldn't put it down. I literally stepped into Grace's world from the very first chapter. The author has a great way with words and I found this a very easy read. I went through a roller-coaster of emotions. I laughed, cried, giggled.. Definitely have the Kleenex beside you with this book. It truly is a fantastic read and I highly recommend it. The only negative comment I have about it is that it is not on paperback. I know so many people who would love this but they don't have kindles or don't like reading from their phones etc.. I am looking forward to reading more from Carmel Harrington. She is one author to watch I reckon.
Ok. So, I never do reviews, but I felt I had to with this one. I have NO idea why this book is getting 4 and 5 stars. The writing is horrendous, the characters are undeveloped and it is terribly predictable. The only reason I read the whole book was because it was so highly rated. So terribly disappointed.
Beyond Grace’s Rainbow is a novel that has had rave reviews since its release. Everyone who’s read it has loved it and I was rather desperate to find out for myself. It’s been sitting on my kindle a while, so I started it, hoping for a fantastic read that lived up to all the reviews and awards it’s won. Unfortunately, I didn’t really see what all of the fuss was about; I thought it was quite simplistic and I just thought everything was all hearts and flowers, despite Grace’s illness.
Beyond Grace’s Rainbow introduces us to Grace who at the beginning of the book is diagnosed with cancer. Trouble is, she’s also got a 3 year old son to take care of so anything other than survival is not an option. With all of her friends rallying round, Grace is determined to beat this thing, but her best hope of winning is a bone marrow transfusion and since Grace is adopted and has a very rare blood type it means she will have to get in touch with her biological mother after all these years. Also back on the scene is Grace’s ex Luke, who is determined to show he’s changed and to prove he can be the partner Grace needs and the son his father wants.
When I started Beyond Grace’s Rainbow, I was initially very intrigued by the book. But I could tell straight away that I wasn’t a fan of the writing style. It was too simplistic, very dumbed down – or so it seemed. There was an overuse of exclamation points – at least 5 or so to a page which made everything seem falsely happy and cheery. Everyone laughed when they spoke and I became desperate for it to end. It just didn’t work for me at all. It pains me to type that, but I have to be honest. I just couldn’t get on with it at all.
The premise is great, and I loved the idea of friends being family, and I thought Luke seemed very genuine (although I would have liked if we had got to see him before because how do we know how he acted? We’re only ever told…) but I felt the writing let it down somewhat. If it had just had a bit better structure and maybe a bit of tighter editing and less exclamation marks I would have probably enjoyed it more, but as it was, I was overwhelmingly disappointed.
Now, I did enjoy this amid both tears and laughter BUT I hope she's since found a proper editor or learned how to use commas properly, as that basic lack of knowledge in a writer has cost her an extra star. I don't think there was one character I disliked, actually.....I loved all the friends' interactions throughout, whether in good times or bad. You have to feel so bad for Grace, she certainly had some bloody tragedies to live through, though of course in many way, she's also blessed. And of course, so many people live through this terrible way of life with chemo, etc...on a daily basis, sometimes working and sometimes unsuccessful. It has to be pretty bloody horrendous. I loved the author's mention of Mr H in her dedication. Thought that was so nice. Now those missed commas....read these aloud and you'll see how they make a sentence read totally differently without them-"But there's no doubt I'm afraid," "Don't you feel guilty about how you feel ever," "Don't give her a choice, insist on meeting her Grace," "Because it's hard to say Gerry," "Don't say no Grace," "If I started Catherine, I don't think I'd stop" and "She is Tom." There are more, throughout, but I can't write the lot out here. It's a massive problem, though. To cap it all, we had one added later on where it WASN'T needed-"Relieved, she suggested it to be honest, babe." She also wrote "as they'd grown up as cousins" as opposed to so, friends the TV series needed capitalising, was was used and not were and this sentence didn't need to used twice-"I didn't want to promise to never to see my baby." There were also some missed apostrophes and speechmarks for variation. I didn't understand this line, either, and Google couldn't help, "It makes me feel under a compliment." It did recognise a Baby Guinness, though, which sounds delicious !! Delph and ornaments are mentioned and I've heard of Delft but not delph, then at one point Jack had chicken nugget and chips. I doubt anybody ever has only one ! I have bought another by her which was written 5 years after this one, so I have high hopes that she has a new editor or proofreader by now.
I came across this author on Twitter, where I have discovered amazing talent, and she's an Irish author too! Judging by the amazing reviews and the fact that it had won the March 2013 Kindle Book Award and was recommended by Bord Gais Energy Book Club, it seemed I just had to get myself a copy. I am glad I did......
Grace has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and knows that the only hope she has is finding a suitable bone marrow donor. None of her friends are matches and, as she was adopted as a baby, there are no family members to test. She is a single Mum to Jack and has raised him alone, albeit with the support of her close group of friends. These friends are her coping mechanism and, along with Jack, keep her motivated. As the need for a donor becomes more and more of a priority, Grace and her friends decide to track down her birth mother in the hope of prolonging Grace's life. With some unofficial detective work and a few road trips, the search begins.
Although the subject matter of this novel is not upbeat, the characters bring the book to life. I would certainly be grateful for Grace's wonderful friends and their constant support and rallying. As awful it must be to discover you have cancer, to have the constant presence of these friends would definitely be a benefit to any sick person and make the rounds of chemo and sleepless nights seem worth the fight.
Carmel Harrington has written a warm, endearing tale of a woman's journey through illness, good and bad. It is more a novel of spirit and friendship, love and hope, than one of medical procedures. It will make you laugh, make you cry and make you want to be part of this tight circle of friends. It will stay with you well after you have turned the last page. Well worth the £2.99 on Kindle!
Firstly let me say I have just been completely blown away by this book. I have so much I want to say about it and trying to make sure I can do it justice is going to be hard.
The story is about single mother Grace, who after suffering flu symptoms discovers she actually has cancer. The story follows her journey from her diagnosis through her family history in search of answers she's never needed to find more than now.
I've had this in my TBR for a while, I've been aware of it longer than I've had it in my pile and that's all down to following Carmel on twitter and down to her fans singing her praises so highly. I downloaded the book when it was on offer but even at its current price of £2.48 for the ebook from Amazon you are walking away with an absolute bargain. It was only recently that I'd actually read the blurb and found out what the book was about and just decided on a whim to bump it up the queue the other night.
This story is a tearjerker, your Kleenex warning starts here. I am a crier anyway but I really think you will find it almost impossible to read without shedding a few tears throughout.
Carmel gets straight to the point with Grace's story. We learn immediately of her diagnosis and a little of her prognosis too. She's a single mother who has already suffered through some tragic family circumstances and the fact that she has now been diagnosed with leukaemia is the unthinkable cherry on top of her cake.
The cast of characters in this story really make it. Grace has a strong (and eclectic) support network around her that lift her up in the downs and keep her spirits lifted with their own dramatic lives. I loved that while Grace and her story obviously take centre stage, we get to learn about the lives of the other characters and how life absolutely has to go on even in the face of illness. My favourite character aside from Grace was Liam. His reappearance couldn't have came at a better time even though it might have been sucky to begin with. I loved his passion to prove he'd changed and was ready to support and love Grace and Jack like he should.
The story is told in third person and rotates through all of the characters close to Grace, including some snippets from her son, Jack's perspective. I loved the innocence and childlike perspective of the impact of the changes in his life.
Cancer is present in almost everyone's lives in some way. Reading about it and the suffering associated with it, both on the patient and their family is hard enough but to write about the tragedy of it is brave. It's brave because you have to be delicate, you have to tread carefully through the abundance of emotions that surround the illness, you have to be truthful and face the sometimes ugly reality of it and you have to be aware of not undermining or downgrading the importance of every aspect of the illness.
I absolutely take my hat off to Carmel for having such a difficult subject matter in her debut novel and for writing so eloquently and poignantly about it. I have been left totally captivated by Carmel's writing style which had an easy charm and quiet beauty to it. I've been fortunate to be approved for a review copy of her second novel "The Life You Left" which I am going to start straight away.
I'll be honest, I requested this book on NetGalley for two reasons. One it was an Irish author and two it was a winner of the March 2013 Kindle Book awards. And I didn't pay much attention to the book blurb so when I opened it and realised it was a book with a cancer storyline, my heart sank a little as I knew it would be emotional and I was scared. I need not have feared as this emotive issue was handled expertly and it was an emotional read but also heart-warming, full of life and surprisingly fun.
First Line of Beyond Grace's Rainbow:
"Grace felt like she floating up the ceiling."
My Thoughts on Beyond Grace's Rainbow :
If like me you are scared about reading a book with a cancer storyline, think again! Trust me! Yes, this books will take all your emotions and stir them up until they become stiff enough to pierce to your heart. But at the centre of this book is a group of friends who add a light hearted, fun touch to the storyline. You have Grace, her cousin Tara and Tara's husband Sean, their gay friends Tom and Gerry (yes, seriously!) and their single girlfriend Abby. Together these guys make a fantastic support group for each other but more than that they know how to live life to the fullest and how to smile though the hard days. No matter how serious the situation, there is always a joke to be cracked or a well timed quip to help ease the tension. It is hard not to fall under their spell and to become wrapped up in all their lives.
There is a lot of background drama going on also. Grace's ex-partner Liam appears back on the scene and despite a few initial misgivings, I loved him. He might have been a jerk in the past but he swiftly convinced me that he was a good guy who followed the wrong path but is now prepared to put Grace and Jack first. Was I right? Sorry, no spoilers!
In addition, Grace urgently needs a blood marrow donor but as a person who adopted as a baby tracking down her birth family is going to be intense. The adoption story line gave me heart palpitations as we uncovered the murky past. It added an element of mystery and following Tom and Gerry as they did some private investigations was highly entertaining.
Overall this book was a LOT more fun that I expected. I grew to love the characters but none more so than Grace, Liam and their son Jack. This little family unit wrenched at my heart and my palms were sweaty as I turned pages anxiously hoping against hope that all could possibly work out. Hats off to Carmel Harrington for creating characters that touched me so much. I am really looking forward to seeing what future books she comes up with.
Who should read Beyond Grace's Rainbow?
I'd highly recommend this to those who like chick-lit books with meaningful, realistic storylines and are not afraid of books that may break their heart. And to all those who like strong, engaging characters. Go for it!
Thanks to NetGalley and HarperCollins UK, HarperImpulse for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
BEYOND GRACE'S RAINBOW was one of those rare books that you know will utterly break your heart but you can't help but put your trust in because you know it will put it back together. Heart-warming and emotional it kept my attention from beginning to end.
Grace is a young single mum to adorable Jack who is given the devastating news none of us want to hear...Cancer. Having already lost her adoptive parents to a tragedy and splitting up with Jack's dad Liam who's suffered from alcoholism for years, this news is the last straw. Drawing on the support of her best friends, Tara and husband Sean, couple Tom and Gerry and perpetually single gal Abby, Grace gathers her strength to fight for her life. When Liam, newly sober pops up in her life again begging for another chance, Grace must acknowledge that her time in this world may be limited and decide how to live the best life possible for her and her beloved son.
BEYOND GRACE'S RAINBOW was definitely a tear jerker but was also happily filled with loads of humour and laughter that helped as I read this book, travelling on an emotional roller coaster with tear stained cheeks. Grace was a great character, devoted mum and friend; I loved how she gathered her strength from within and refused to let the cancer win. Liam was an interesting character, he reminded me of a lot of lads I know, acknowledging his wrong doings but never really "getting" it and understanding just how much pain he caused until finally it clicked and I began to trust that he was for real. Devoted to both Grace and Jack, I loved how he redeemed himself in the eyes of his loved ones and his friends particularly my favourite, Tara, whose steely gaze and ability to make people jump through hoops to gain forgiveness is only rivalled by my own!
While Grace is the one going through the illness it was clear to see the effects it had on the group dynamic, constantly assured by Grace to get on with their own lives it was heartbreaking to see their struggle to fulfil her wishes and not always achieving them. I enjoyed all of the characters and loved how unique and distinct each of their voices were. Gerry did grate on my nerves a bit, he was a bit too camp for me but he did win me over in the end. I connected most with Abby, in the same situation myself; I watched her journey with particular interest. I loved the setting and the fact that Harrington really made use of Irish landmarks down to the local shops which made it easy to visualise the surrounding and add to the realism of the story.
While definitely character driven there was plenty of plots and mystery to keep me intrigued particularly when Grace realises that in order to fight for her future she needs to uncover her past and her adoption storyline was a particular favourite.
A story filled with love, friendship, sorrow, forgiveness and above all hope BEYOND GRACE'S RAINBOW was a wonderful, unforgettable story that will stay with me for a long time.
Beyond Grace's Rainbow follows Grace Devlin through her fight with Leukemia. She is an honest, clever, and charming lady who has you loving her from the very start. Throughout her story you get to meet the people in her life, her beloved group of friends and her family. With them you get not only their side to her story, but their own stories too. Her friends consist of, Tom and Gerry her two gay friends, who are without a doubt the most romantic and gorgeous couple ever. Tom is the dad of the whole group and Gerry is the drama queen with a huge heart. Tara is Grace's cousin, she is the mouth and the hard-faced one, she is married to Grace's long-term karaoke friend the lovely Dr,Sean. Lastly, we have Abbie, she is the art chick with a shy smile, a gorgeous face and a metabolism we all dream about, she also has a tendency to pick very crap boyfriends. All together they are a force to be reckoned with. A gang of pure love. Grace has a son Jack who she seriously dotes on. When Jacks father Liam (the love of her life) turns up out of the blue one day, her feathers are well and truly ruffled. We also get to meet a lady named Catherine and told her incredible journey in life, but I won't go into detail about her she's one for you to find out about yourself. All I can say about this book is that you will not be disappointed when you read it. It is a tale of heartache, mystery, love, devastation, life and relationships. A book that will have you giggling and excited, but will also have you crying and questioning how things in life can change so suddenly. It has been told in such a wonderful way, a way where you are pulled into the words. You don't become a part of the book like some you read, but miraculously you become a friend of the author. Now I know that seems a strange thing to say, but you really do feel like you are sitting with her listening to her as she explains the tale of grace's life to you. Like this is real life and grace is her family. That is something I've never experienced before and my swinging brick thawed slightly allowing a warmth to take over me, allowing me to live that reality with her. It made me become very aware of my own family, friends, children, and husband. How blessed I am, how blessed we all are. I will never look at a rainbow in the same way again. I can hand on my heart honestly say that this book has blown me away. Treat yourself to it. It's not just for us chick-lit ladies. It's for everyone who enjoys a good read and a brilliant book. It's Sensational.
I’m afraid if you’re looking for a review which is perfectly balanced with positive and negative opinions then you’re in the wrong place, because all I can do is tell you how brilliant Beyond Grace’s Rainbow is. I really hope more people read this and Carmel Harrington gets the recognition she deserves because Beyond Grace’s Rainbow is a beautifully written book.
This book tells the story of Grace, a mother in her thirties who has been diagnosed with leukaemia. It could have been too grueling and tough to read but it’s written so stunningly by the author that giving up on Beyond Grace’s Rainbow was never an option.
Firstly, there’s a great bunch of characters; Abby, Tom, Gerry, Sean and Tara. Their own little side-stories are written in chapters which break up the main focus on the illness Grace and her family are suffering from, without it being forgotten. I grew to love all her friends and their stories.
Secondly, Carmel Harrington has written such an emotional book and despite the need to have a box of tissues close to be on the safe side, Beyond Grace’s Rainbow has loads of really sweet and humorous moments. Grace’s cancer is never treated in a way which could be seen as disrespectful to anyone who has seen it in real life, yet I never found it too hard to read. I was an emotional wreck throughout the highs and lows and feel like I lived in Grace’s friendship circle the whole time I spent reading the book.
There are lots of real-life situations written in this book other than cancer, such as adoption and others I can’t really give away. Everything is written so poignantly and Beyond Grace’s Rainbow is a book to be proud of.
This is, amazingly, Carmel Harrington’s debut book and if her future books are anywhere near as good as Beyond Grace’s Rainbow, she will become one of my favourite authors ever.
*I received a copy of this book via Netgalley. Review is my honest opinion.
Now that I have finished sobbing I can give you my opinion on Beyond Grace’s Rainbow by Carmel Harrington.
Grace is our main character, she is a single mum to her adorable son Jack and she has a large group of close friends who are all about to become her support network as she has just received the devastating news that she has cancer. It is as she is preparing to undergo treatment that her ex Liam has returned and wants to be back in her life and to be a father to his son who he has never met.
This book was breath-taking, although I have read many books that have brought a lump to my throat, this book went one step further, the emotion was so raw and unexpected that I had tears streaming down my face ( not a good look on your break at work!) I believe that because I connected so well with all of the characters I felt like I was part of their group so everything that happened to Grace felt like it was happening to a friend so I think this was why I felt so emotional.
The writing style was perfect and flawless, there were no slow points or parts that felt the need to skim read, it flowed at a continual gentle pace that enveloped you in the storyline. At times I felt the storyline was predictable but then all of a sudden there was a shift in the way things looked and so I got a shock of my life.
The characters were a fabulous mix, I particularly loved the quirky, gay friend Gerry! Having a character like him in this book was really needed as he kept the fun and light-hearted side to an emotional and deep storyline. Grace was such a strong, caring and loveable character who I loved from the start.
The friendship between the group is a major part of the storyline and each of the friends have their own little story going on too. As well as the friendship and Grace’s illness there is also a lovely touch of romance but also some past history to uncover.
This book is easily a 5* read and I will be recommending this book for a long time yet. I wouldn’t hesitate to read more books by this author.
Beyond Grace's Rainbow is a beautiful book about a woman's struggle. It is about forgiveness, about family and friends. Grace has seen her lot of downs in her life. Losing her parents, dealing with an alcoholic boyfriend and inevitably being a single mother. But not everything is so dark. She had a nice childhood with loving parents. And when the latter passed away, she could always count on her circle of friends. Tara, her childhood friend and her husband Sean, Abby, the amazing couple - Tom&Gerry. Each and everyone of them are wonderful people. They lean on each other in moments of sadness. But above all, she had her son. He fills her life and complete her. She couldn't ask for more when Liam came back into her life as he was the only missing part. Everything should have been perfect except for the unexpected cancer discovery! This book is highly emotional as it takes us on Grace's journey to win the battle. I was in absolutely awe to see such an amazing group of friends. They were there in every moment. Like a shield. And I was also very touched by Liam's sincerity. How he stood by her in those difficult moments. I was thinking that she HAS to be stronger than the illness with so much love surrounding her. And the promise of a bright future. She had so much to live for. I couldn't help feeling desperate when I understood what was happening. It was heartbreaking. Man, I haven't cried so much while reading a book! About, the ending, ahhh! Carmel Harrington couldn't have painted a more beautiful picture. Hope. It's such a strong feeling. And as a reader, I closed the book with a smile. Renewed hope. It really is rainbow after rain. One word: B.E.A.U.T.I.F.U.L!
Beyond Grace's Rainbow tells the story of Grace, a single mom who finds out that she has Leukemia. Grace is an amazing character, as Liam defines her in the book, she is beautiful inside and out. She has had a complitcated life but she has grown to become a strong loving woman. But what makes her story so special is her group of friends. They help, protect and confort her in every possible way, showing what true friendship is about, putting a brave face when necessary but also just being there, crying and hugging when there is nothing else to say or to do.
Also key to the story are Liam, Grace's alcoholic exboyfriend, and Jack, their 3-year-old son. Although Liam disappeared of her life before Jack was born, he is back, assuring that he is full recovered and willing to prove to anyone that he is ready to be part of the family again and that he is trustworthy. To get to them though he has to face first the group of friends who are not going to make it easy for him. I have to admit that I didn't like Liam at first, I though that he was full of crap but little by little I warmed to him too. And Jack is the cutest, although he doesn't say a lot, when he says something he says it from his heart and you can see that he is going to grow to become a great man.
Carmel writes about delicate and difficult topics like cancer, but also alcoholism and others (I am not going to say anything else because I don't want to spoilt it, but there are some twist on the story that I didn't expect at all) with such tact and elegance that you have no other option but to get on the rollercoster of emotions that this book is. This story is going to blow you away, is going to make you cry and is going to make you laugh (not a lot of authors can achieve that). And it is going to stay with you. I am quite sure that I'll think of it every time that I see a rainbow.
I'd had 'Grace' sitting on my Kindle for ages, watching all the raving reviews and awards come rolling in! I knew it was going to be good - and I knew it was going to be sad - so sort of in the way I absolutely can't wait for and simultaneously dread reading John Green books, I waited for the 'optimum time' to start reading. Happy to report that the optimum time to read Beyond Grace's Rainbow is any damn time at all!
We follow the eponymous Grace - a single mother of a toddler due to her ex-boyfriend's alcoholism - in her battle with leukaemia. Grace is flanked with an amazing cast of supporting characters. Grace is the heart of the story, but each of the supporting cast has its own story arc that you can't help but get involved in. And on top of the sob-fest, there's also a rather gripping mystery sub-plot as Grace's friends rush to discover the identity of her biological father in the hopes that he will be a bone marrow donor match and save their friend's life.
It's a story of extremes - but not in the way that you should be put off by fear that the cancer storyline makes it heavy-handed or mawkish. At times the book is genuinely funny! I particularly loved Abby's attempts at speed dating - it's a little Sex & the City (but where the city is Dublin!).
A story full of heart and sorrow. I'm off to bug Carmel on the ETA of her second book!
Okay, I'll be honest and admit that this book has been sat on my Kindle for weeks now and I have put off reading it, because I knew it was going to be a tearjerker. And I was right. I was barely ten pages in before I was reaching for the tissues!!
Grace is a single mother, having separated from her son's father Liam, who had an alcohol addiction, just as she found out she was pregnant with their son. Grace has an amazing group of friends, and all their lives are turned into chaos when Grace is diagnosed with leukaemia.
From the very first page I loved Grace, and found myself really feeling for the woman all the way through the book. Grace is a strong, brave woman and I cant see anyone being able to read this book and not fall in love with her. Grace's friends were brilliant, all such unique characters that had me laughing my head off one page, and sobbing my eyes out the next. In a cast of such strong characters there is usually a 'weaker' one I don't like, but I loved them all, even Liam when he comes back on the scene.
It's hard to write a review for this book without giving away any spoilers! There are some really good twists and turns in the story, and it is heart warming and heart breaking, funny and sad, and beautifully written. There is just one warning that should be issued with this book - always carry tissues!
I really wanted to like this book. I thought the plot had a lot of potential, and the reviews seem great. Unfortunately I found at that around 20% of the way through I just didn't want to continue reading it anymore. The quality of the writing just seemed immature to me, with excessive use of exclamation marks; like the author was constantly trying to force me to find what they were writing funny! The characters were not believable to me and I found them to be very one-dimensional. Overall I was disappointed to have to abandon my reading, but life's too short to endure books that I am not enjoying ;)
I read Carmels' 1st book last as I was always a bit frightened of being hurt by Grace's story. It's odd to read a debut after you've read all of the authors other books, I can see how Carmel has grown as a writer and how her voice has matured.
Beyond Grace's Rainbow is such a tender, beautiful, heartbreaking, tender read. The characters are absolutely amazing! I adored each and every one of them! I sobbed A LOT.
Just read this book with a box of tissues handy. It will definitely tug at your heartstrings!
The best book I have picked up in months. It had me laughing & crying within minutes of turning pages. I wanted to be living in the world of thus book and be part of this tight knitted friendship. Finished the book after 1am as I couldn't stop reading it. Sobbed my heart out at this book, literally shoulders were shaking. My opinion is that life is to short to read a book twice but if I did it would be this one.
I really enjoyed this eBook. It was an easy read, one that I finished in a few days, I found it hard to put down. The author has a knack of making you feel connected with the characters. I both cried and laughed throughout the story. A well written, witty, amusing story and most definitely a tearjerker. Will be watching out for more from this author.
Once books start dishing out the reader paragraph after paragraph of character descriptions you loose me. It is the Authors job to thread character descriptions and personality characteristics through the story. There are ways to imply such details, this way you are not undermining the intelligence of the reader. Added to this the cheesy character outlines.... I'm done.
