How To Read Buildings

Rate this book
This practical primer is a handbook for decoding a building’s style, history, and evolution. Every building contains clues embedded in its design that identify not only its architectural style but also the story of who designed it, who it was built for, and why. Organized by architectural element (roofs, doors, windows, columns, domes, towers, arches, etc.), the book is roughly chronological within each section, examining the elements across history, through different architectural styles, and by geographical distribution. Additional chapters offer overviews of how architecture has been affected by geography, history, and religion, along with an illustrated timeline of architectural elements. Also included is a chapter on applied ornament and a handy introduction to naming each part of a building. All entries are accompanied by examples in the forms of period engravings, line drawings, and pictures. The extended captions make the book invaluable for anyone who has ever pondered the meaning or importance of a hipped roof, rounded doorway, or classical pediment.

A book worth of reading. Finally I can tell Palladian style buildings from Renaissance. The book changes your perception of the buildings around you: you start to see so many important details, hard work and artistic taste of the architects.

I got this book, to understand structures, buildings. The book is laid out from Building types and goes into details of towers, chimneys, and ornaments. Roman architecture, palladian stood out the most to me. A lot of new definitions, terms in this discipline, to outsiders.

The Author mentions to find out similarities in styles, and then read buildings.

An excellent introduction to Architectural Styles. I would recommend this to everyone.

Very interesting and educational book, i recommend it to every enthusiastic novice. It starts with a short description of architectural styles from antiquity to the twentieth century. Then, it focuses on each part of buildings (door, windows, towers, etc...) and describes its evolution through times and architectural styles.
Reading this book gives you the opportunity to better assess buildings you visit. It's like a guide on how to taste wine instead of just drinking wine.
However, readers may feel lost among the many details given and have a hard time remembering the characteristic of each architectural style. It's like anything else, you need to put into practise what you've just learnt to better understand it and memorize it. Fortunately, this book is available in a small size which is convenient to take it with oneself while visiting.

"How to Read Buildings: A Crash Course in Architectural Styles" - written by Carol Davidson Cragoe and published in 2008 by Rizzoli International Publications. This compact book is chock full of sepia-tinted images and brief descriptions of any architectural term you could imagine. It would be a great resource if you are out and about looking at buildings, but it was a bit overwhelming to take in all at once. Pilasters and barrel vaults, capitals and pediments all started to sound the same after a while to this amateur. It's a great reference book though, and although the images were small and monotone, it was fun to see buildings all over the world highlighted for their individual styles. Take it along on a trip to Europe or for a walk in your own neighborhood.

Great little book. Shame it's so Euro/US centric.

He aprendido mucho, aunque hay bastante información repetida.

A thoroughly useful book, but not the most helpful after reading two other books in the series on houses and churches. I hoped for more of a focus on structures such as universities, federal buildings, libraries, malls, and urban architecture, but churches and houses make up a good portion of the subject of the book--and there are two books in this series about those. I can't complain too much, as they are all buildings, but I hoped for a bit more breadth. Yet, there's plenty of good information on architectural styles, and more of a focus on ancient Greek and Roman architecture and its influence into the present.

Much of the information overlaps with the other two volumes, but that doesn't negate the value of this book. I might pass it along to someone else since I found such value in the previous two books, but there's not enough unique information here to make it worth keeping in my library.

A glossary and index are included at the end.

This wasn't what I expected, but I don't really know what I expected.

The illustrations are exquisitely detailed and every page is filled with them as examples accompanying all descriptions.

And the book is well organized like a reference manual. It would be pretty easy to quickly look up details such as a column or an arch.

I think my criticism and disappointment is with the limited scope. It's almost exclusively buildings constructed by the Greeks, Romans, and Western European and North American descendants.

There is almost nothing from Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Central America, or the Nordic countries. And the book covers only cathedrals, large public buildings, and private mansions.

I guess I was hoping it would be a little more relevant to modern day and more global. Instead it's a very thorough cataloging of the minor variations from a very narrow selection of buildings.

This book is a fantastic introduction to common architectural styles with great details about how to accurately date a building based on a variety of features such as materials, columns, arches, roofs, vaults, domes, windows, fireplaces, etc. It has a lot of specific examples and a decent glossary if an unfamiliar term is used. Don't let its small size fool you; it contains quite a bit of useful information. If you are looking for a more in-depth study of architectural history after reading this gem, try Trachtenberg & Hyman's Architecture, From Prehistory To Post Modernism: The Western Tradition.

At first glance this book may have what you're looking for if the goal is be reminded of architectural styles and evolution through identifying structural and decorative components. There's an introduction section that describes the different styles through time, and then more in-depth looks at each kind of identifying trait.

The problem is the book is too haphazard in how it presents this information. For instance, if you're looking to identify a building based on the door design, instead of presenting the information as a variety of common traits, it instead shows a few examples that aren't consistent between each section, or even consistent between each style. The reader is constantly needing to reference other works to figure out the actual traits they're looking for.

The Skinny: A well-organized handbook to get you up to speed on the main architectural periods.

The Good: The book is well organized and balanced equally between verbiage and pictures. You will learn a ton about the nuances of the key architectural styles and after one read I can already know what style a building is in. I plan to keep this book near my desk as a go-to guide when I need a refresher.

The Bad: A lot of examples were used multiple times for the different architectural styles, which I found to be limiting. I think more comparisons contrasting the different styles would've been helpful and perhaps even some quizzing throughout.

This is succinct, but very dense. In fact, I would consider this more of a reference book than a text on architecture. It consists of 2 or 4 page spreads which have a photo and paragraph describing architectural concepts and words. These spreads are grouped in themes (Roman, Gothic, Religious, Suburban), but otherwise don't follow a discussion or overarching book theme, so it ends up more like a dictionary of images and concepts.

I would probably give it 4 stars as a reference book, but as a crash course I felt it was limited.

Certainly a crash course. I found the edition I had, which was a smaller-sized book (roughly 5x5) to be a little rough on seeing the finer details in the drawing. Truly more of a reference book to be skimmed/used in bits, Cragoe does a decent job summarizing what is partially an almost inexhaustible topic.

Nice, but could have done with a few more features to be more useful. Like a dissection of a building helping you to identify the different parts and what eras they came from, a timeline showing the change of styles and when they came in, etc etc.

Much less informative than I had hoped. It barely ever goes into more detail than a passing remark. However, it makes a perfectly fine coffee table addition.
