A retired superhero, a lonely reaper, an incubus on a quest for love, and a girl running from reality itself. "Are We Human?" features eight, speculative fiction, circa adult stories that explore the most human elements of inhuman worlds. But what does it mean to challenge reality, and what does it truly mean to be human?
**I received an advanced reader copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.**
Callahan always impresses with content warnings in their work. The content warnings are listed in the table of contents for each piece.
Callahan is known for their diverse writing and Are We Human? doesn't fall short of that. As a queer person of color, it's always impressive to find representation that you can truly relate to. And as a fan of diverse supernatural love stories, there are definitely some good ones in this collection.
Despite there being eight stories, each character introduced is well written and relatable. My favorite character through the entire collection was Manny from The Cure.
One other piece I like about this book is the cover art. The cover art is representative of the collection you're about to read.
In general, Are We Human? is an easy read and if you're as absorbed in the characters' stories as I was, you can easily read the book in a night. I took a little longer due to life getting in the way, but normally would've had it done in a few hours. Overall, Callahan continues to impress and I'm excited for any upcoming work.
