The Accidental Master #2

Master by Choice

Rate this book
Jackson found his boys by accident, but taking the steps to understand what they need has been a deliberate decision. Only weeks into getting to know his pups, Jackson can already picture a future with Sawyer and Cooper. He just needs to show them that no matter what the obstacle, he’s their master by choice and nothing will change that.

Cooper and Sawyer made a family together when everyone else turned their backs on them. Daydreaming about the day they’d find Master Right helped to fill the empty place in their family. As Jackson starts to merge into their life, none of the men know exactly how it will look. The only thing they’re sure of is that sometimes the best family isn’t the one you’re born with, but the one you choose.

It’s always more difficult to read a love story where the couple have already established their relationships. 😌 Frankly, I have always believed that all people have that tiny side of hopeless romantic in their hearts. 😁 So it always gives me that unnecessary worry and chills when I read about a love story where MCs are already in a relationship because I’m afraid of the amount of angst that would get thrown in my way. Thank the god that it was not the case here in this lovely novel. ❤️

I have already said in my previous review of the first book that I do not do ménage stories. And this one is definitely an exception, one - it’s because it’s puppy play and two - because I love Kenneth Obi’s narration. 🥰 And this second book in the trilogy definitely didn’t disappoint me. After the unexpected event of Jackson “accidentally” finding two sweet pups in the previous book, this one explores all the feel-good, slow-burn and sweet relationship development among all 3 MCs. Cooper still being hyperactive and sweet, Sawyer having his worries and afraid to trust and depend fully to his new master and Jackson being patient and kind as ever for these very two different pups. And smut? Oh, sweet lord, that’s very well-written and smoking hot puppy play stuff! 🔥 Mama likey! *woof woof* 🐶 I have to admit, I’m very happy with how everything turned out in the end. Especially the ending, it was just so sweet, romantic and heart-melting that you can’t help falling in love with all 3 characters. 💜 And as always, Kenneth has done an excellent job narrating this story. Now, I just need to keep still and wait for the third book in the series to come out as an audio. If you like slow-burn, low angst, sweet polyamorous relationship dosed with a healthy amount of some kink, I think you should just dive right in. 😉

A sweet follow up to The Accidental Master, book 2 picks up right where we left off. Once again, there isn't really any major drama with the focus on the growing relationship between Sawyer, Cooper and Jackson and their changing dynamics. Cooper is still 1000 percent in and hyper, Jackson is now quite confident in his role and Sawyer is working on trusting that everything will work out and feeling comfortable enough to let Jackson see every side of him.

Again, things go exceedingly smoothly for the threesome, but M.A. Innes did get me once or twice with the emotional side of the story. I would have liked to see a bit more of the puppy play, especially once Sawyer felt comfortable with things and the men affirmed their commitment, but I still enjoyed it. Fun, sweet and kinky.

These three make the cutest triad. M.A. Innes has created three extremely different characters and I enjoy seeing what each man brings to the relationship. In all possible combinations, Sawyer, Jackson and Cooper figure out what works for them both behind closed doors and out in society. This episode was a whole lot of fun.

Jackson finally manages to draw Sawyer out of his shell and it's definitely the best part of this one for me. Extra enjoyable, thanks to the extra personality Kenneth Obi infuses into each character, this is a truly marvelous audiobook.

Big kudos to M.A. Innes for the creative scenes. This author keeps everything moving along at a great pace and manages to give us some memorable moments. Enjoy!

I feel conflicted about how I feel about this book. I liked it ... and I hope I don't get mobbed for this ... but I did not like Cooper in this book. At all. He was a little over the top in book one, but still mostly fine. Here, though, he was too much for me. I'm one who can struggle when reading poly and/or open relationships (though I do it anyway, to try to push my boundaries) and in this menage I couldn't help but feel like Cooper was dominating, especially the first half of the book. Constantly pushing for Jackson's attention, with zero consequences. I understand that's part of the game they play; he pushes for attention, and he gets it. But it didn't seem right to always get positive rewards for "bad" behavior? I just wanted one time where he got an actual punishment, like standing still and quiet for 10 freaking minutes. Normally I *love* brats. Part of that is because they get in actual trouble! Cooper doesn't seem like a brat to me though, just someone who wants constant attention. And gets it. That's not a quality I find very attractive, no matter how cute the person is.

And I don't know, in one way it makes sense to go at the pace of each individual, so if Cooper is ready for more and Sawyer is not, okay, fine. But maybe it would make more sense, in a new threesome, to all go at the same pace as the "slowest" person in the relationship. Otherwise how can it be fair and balanced? How can they be on the same page with one running full steam ahead, the other having concerns, and one stuck in the middle? I felt that way with the first book, and I felt it here, too.

So yeah, maybe I'm reading too much into a light and fluffy kink book. And maybe my ideals of what a fictional threesome would look like differ from the author's, which is perfectly fine. But this threesome is a struggle for me. I freaking adore Sawyer, everything about him. Jackson seems like a good guy. But not liking Cooper puts a damper on things, and I can't help but wish he were handled differently. Or, to be honest, not part of this at all.

While I'm at it, I could really go for more puppy play in these books that are supposed to be about puppy play. It's made into a big deal -- the whole point of the first book is two pups looking for a master -- but the actual puppy play isn't much, and it's the same every time. Cooper runs around, Saywer cuddles. Will it be more of the same in book three?

This is probably sounding all negative and I'm sorry if it does. I love this author's books, I have read ALL of them, and hold them to a high standard. And when I don't connect with one like I want to, I'm obviously a little disappointed. So to be clear, I did like this book, and parts of it were great, I just didn't *love* it.

No one writes puppy play like M.A. Innes. Her wonderful characters come to life and in this second book, we get to see Sawyer putting more trust in letting his master see his puppy. To him that was such a big deal, but it was handled beautifully. The love and the trust were so apparent and made the story a joy to read. Cooper, Sawyer and Jackson really are fully well-developed characters, and the story is erotic, very loving, and so very well presented.

Review for the whole series. Kind of. For the first book, the beginning of the second and my decision-making process about abandoning the series.

I wasn’t sure about the puppy play part of this book, but I thought I could take it or leave it and I chose it anyway because I wanted to venture outside my comfort zone and try reading about a relationship between three men. While I like the idea in theory, it’s easy for the dynamics to feel unbalanced and to get too much focus on the relationship between two people with the other man left more on the sideline or there are jealousy issues or something else that doesn’t make it work for me.
I had a good feeling about this book, though, because it had a similar structure (two subs already in a relationship finding a master) to an MMF relationship I’ve read before and liked a lot. This one didn’t reach its potential, though.

I can’t really point out something I actively dislike, it was more average than anything else.
There’s a lot of puppy play talk but the actual play is pretty tame, which is a plus for me; if you’re expecting people eating dog food out of a bowl, don’t worry because there’s nothing like it. Not in this book at least, I can’t vouch for the rest of the series, but Cooper mostly likes running around chasing a ball and Sawyer cuddling and being petted.
The characters aren’t bad, although Jackson doesn’t seem very dominant to me and Cooper is a bit too much on the brat side for my taste. My favorite is definitely Sawyer, but I felt like the focus was mostly on Cooper and that wouldn’t necessarily be a problem if it was a temporary thing. Sawyer and Cooper move at different speeds and it makes sense that Jackson would adjust things accordingly and give Sawyer time to get used to the new situation while Cooper pushes ahead at full speed.
The problem is that I expected things to even out in the second book and at the beginning it didn’t feel like it was going to happen any time soon.

Cooper is still is exuberant self, meddling and pushing, and Jackson seems to follow while making sure Sawyer isn’t left behind. While things between Cooper and Jackson move along because Cooper wants it and Jackson is on board with it, it seems like every time Sawyer and Jackson make progress is because, and only because, Cooper puts things in motion.
It’s done in a very inclusive way, with Cooper talking to Sawyer about it and all, but it still feels like without Cooper there wouldn’t be much happening at all. And maybe it’s just because Cooper is the exuberant, sharing one, but it also seems like there isn’t much balance on the off-page things the two subs do separately with their master, with Sawyer learning things about Jackson because Cooper tells him what they talked about or did together but never the other way around. The stronger chemistry and bond seem to be between Jackson and Cooper with Sawyer worrying that it's too soon to get serious, although he wants it and despite Jackson and Sawyer being pretty great together, the rare times Cooper is pushed aside long enough to see what it could be like with a little more balance.

Like I said, it wouldn’t be that much of a problem if it was only at first, if a time was coming when there was some progress with Sawyer and Jackson taking the wheel (although, really, it should be Jackson, since he's supposed to be the Dom in the relationship), but reviews for the other two books point out that the focus is still pretty much on Cooper and Sawyer is still pretty much taken for granted.
Definitely not what I’m looking for.

This book, just like the first one, was a perfect mixture of sweet and sexy. It was nice to see Sawyer come out of his shell a little bit and Jackson really step into the role as Master. Of course Cooper is still pure, sweet and funny and the perfect component to this throuple.

I LOVE this book and these guys. Ready for the next one! :)

Follows on from The Accidental Master - Cooper, Sawyer and Jackson are growing their relationship. They are becoming more comfortable with each other. Sawyer is trying to verbalise his wants and needs to Master.

"Finding the right balance between being patient for Sawyer and not letting Cooper push us too fast was hard."

Jackson is perfect as their Master, keeping Cooper in line, not getting annoyed at his exuberance / excitement for life. The conversations and banter between them both made me smile many times.
"Have you been a good boy?" Cooper gave me that innocent look. "Of course, Master."

"But I'm not going to lie - I love knowing that you belong to me on a basic level. It's.. powerful, not like power hungry, but more like... special and important."
"For me too."

The relationship continues to strengthen. All of them taking the time to nurture each other as couples as well as together in the group.

"Cooper was his honest, perfect self."

"My sweet, attentive boyfriend might have picked me up for our date, but it was clear that my wicked, dirty master would be the one to take me home."
"Thank God."

This book is super hot and sweet as we've come to expect from this author and she does it so well. These men are perfect for each other and the author brings them to life beautifully. I'm really loving this series & look forward to more of these guys as they slowly and cautiously begin to open up about their lives to a select few.

These guys are sweet. Cooper the bouncy excitable pup who loves and adores Sawyer and often becomes his voice. Sawyer the shy nervous pup who loves Cooper with his whole heart. And now Jackson - the Master, who has fallen for these boys quickly and they in turn adore him, need him and finally feel safe and content. There’s really not a lot of heat in this book, it’s more about the dynamic of these cleverly crafted characters. Really enjoy them ❤️

Sweet

Sweet and low angst. I liked seeing the relationships grow. Not too heavy on bdsm but enough kink to keep things spicy. I can feel how they care for each other and how their different personalities mesh.

To be honest, I slipped quite a bit of this book. I found Melissa to be annoying, even Cooper was just too much at times!
Everything was just so nice and lovely and I found that to be boring. Which left me reading it for the smut, which was ok.
Didn't enjoy this one.

Cooper and Sawyer are the absolute Cutest Characters with great personalities and Jackson is perfect for them. I fell In-Love with them in book one, and fell even more after this one. Can't wait to hear book 3.

Kenneth is Perfect for all three of these men and their voices. Everything about his narration made this book so much better for me. I already loved the story line but the audio just gave it so much more heart. Loved this book (and the previous one) so dang much. Idk how anyone could keep from falling in love with these three guys.

A nice follow-up to book one but I just can't get into these three together. Not the concept. That's okay. It's the execution. I just didn't feel the love. Hard to explain but Jackson, the older (pup) master just didn't appeal to me. He felt detached somehow. Gah. I don't have words but I probably will stop the series here. Cooper is too OTT and Sawyer too reticent and Jackson too...too.

This book picks up right after the first book ends, so you definitely need to have read that one before starting this.

This book might be my favorite puppy play story that i have read (Not that I've read that many yet!). I just ADORED Cooper, Sawyer, and Jackson together. I loved Cooper's enthusiasm, his bounciness, his total playful pup. And I loved Sawyer and his hesitation, the gentleness that Jackson had to take in approaching him and loving him. And I loved that Jackson had a great relationship with them both together, and also separately one-on-one.

Definitely recommend this if you want threesome puppy play with low angst. It might be a bit *too* perfect, but sometimes that is exactly what you need as a reader! I would definitely love to keep reading about these three - although, don't know what else the author would necessarily have to write about. But I'll read it!

M.A. Innes has done it again.

There is a reason why this author is a favorite. Many reasons in fact and this book is a perfect example of them. Unlike movie sequels, M.A. Innes's books get better throughout the series. We get deeper insights into the characters, their lives, and their desires. With Jackson and his pups learning about each other as well as the lifestyle, we get to see their bond getting stronger. I love how the speed of the relationship's progression, like many things in the lifestyle, is discussed among the guys. In fact, in this and the last book, Sawyer, Cooper, and Jackson made a point to talk about each step they took we each other whether it was all three, in between two of them, or the personal steps one would take and at what pace. Love this author's work so much with much respect and admiration. Have to say though, Sawyer is my favorite but I would adopt all three.

Listened to audio book. This one by far, is my favorite of the series. Cooper had me dying laughing, Sawyer makes me want to just love him and hold him close and Jackson is the perfect Master for his two lovable pups Maverick and Chance.

The best part of this book for me was chapter 13, meeting the parents. Kenneth Obi for me does voices like no other and his excitement of Cooper finally meeting Jackson's father had me laughing so hard I had to pull over when I was going to work. Looking forward and hating the end of the series.

This cannot be read as a standalone and should be read after the first book The Accidental Master. This book started with the trio, Jackson, Sawyer and Cooper. I feel that Cooper is a bit neglected here though because it revolves around Sawyer being ready to welcome Jackson into their life. Its pretty sweet but dull to a certain extent compared to the first book. Sawyer and Cooper got to meet Jackson's family and came out to some of the important people in their life. Facing their fears to be judged yet the desire to live with each other openly had helped them overcome it.
