Jim Nagle who has more problems than any 54-year old investment executive can handle. His ex-wife has her lawyers threatening him, his estranged son is in jail, and the California State Franchise Board is chasing him for back taxes. The topper is his business has grown so fast he is mismanaging it. It just seems he can’t get a break.
Then, in less time than a single heartbeat, his life is changed forever. A freak accident thrust Nagle back 145 years into history.
After ruling out a bad dream or delusions, Jim begins to realize he has, in fact, been transported back in time and is now standing on the dusty street of a small town called Boerne in post-Civil War Texas.
Boerne’s population consists of gunfighters, drifters, post-war lost souls, hostile Indians, and prostitutes, although they prefer the appellation of sporting ladies. Observing the colorful characters sprinkled among the solid German immigrant citizen that founded the village, it doesn’t take Nagle long to observe that major crimes are frequently committed in Boerne with impunity by the perpetrators. Where is the law that should be protecting the citizens? Who can protect him? It seems to Nagle that some of the desperados in the town have found how to get away with murder. Staying alive is his second most important priority. Getting out of this place and back to his real life is his primary goal.
Raised as a life-long Catholic Nagle had slipped from the grace of the Church over the years. Still a believer if not a practitioner, as he becomes more adjusted to life in 1872 Boerne he eventually comes to believe that only God could send him back in time to this place. His present circumstance could not have been an accident, so it must be a part of God’s plan. Nagle’s renewed faith convinces him that his Maker wants him in 1872 for a reason known only to Him. But, what is the purpose? Was he sent here to change history? What is the significance of being put in this place at this time in antiquity?
Since he has no way to go back to the future, Nagle will wait, tangled in time, for an understanding from above. In the meantime, he soon realizes, he'll need to develop some specialized skills pretty darn quick if he wants to stay alive.
Read and enjoy this rich, nuanced, character-driven tale that goes far beyond good versus evil. Order Blasted Past now.
Walter Danley is a mystery and suspense author of The Tipping Point: A Wainwright Mystery. It is a highly praised, fast-paced thriller to die for!
The firm, characters, conflicts, conspiracy and murders in the story never happened, but the fraud, sex, and partner greed where significant elements of the multi-billion dollar real estate syndication business of the 70s and 80s. Critics say if you like mystery and suspense with exhilarating thrills, blind curve plot twists, and page-turning action, you’ll love Walter Danley’s novels. . http://www.walterdanley.com
How about an easy-to-read, easy-to-escape-into time travel tale that takes you back to the Wild West where one 21st century man finds the meaning of true love and what is important in life? Never mind the time space continuum, some men were just born out of time or maybe their reincarnated spirit went to its happy place in the past. Either way, Walter Danley’s BLASTED PAST is like taking a walk through history as it should be told.
Jim Nagle was a successful businessman with a failed marriage, a son who was a stranger and just maybe that accident that sent him back to 1872 was God’s way of putting him the right path as he witnesses social injustice, outright lawlessness and the brutality towards Native Americans that our modern day sensibilities would be loath to see. He finds peace of mind, a sense of purpose and true love, not to mention a world he finally fits into with ease.
Warm, simple storytelling filled with researched facts, this journey back in time is an intriguing and completely entertaining read that was impossible for me to put down! Definitely an original tale that crosses genres without being “way out there” as one man rapidly adapts to another way of life that fits him like a glove.
I received a complimentary copy from Walter Danley! This is my honest and voluntary review.

On paper, this book shouldn't work...and yet I was enthralled with this Western (and I don't even like Westerns), meets Fantasy, meets Romance, meets History. A stand alone novel from Danley, yet it has ties to his Wainright series. Not wanting to give anything away...this novel follows Jim Nagle on a journey from California to Texas, and back again, in the most circuitous route-and that's about all I can say without revealing major plot points. An intriguing, engrossing and satisfying read!
You can't beat Walter Danley for putting together the kind of story everyone wants to read. I am a big fan of his Wainright series, but this one blew me away.
I am the author who states, "Research is the story before it's written." No one knows this better than Danley. His research for Blasted Past is obvious to any who read it. The detail given throughout this compelling story is amazing! It makes it so authenic you might think the story is true!
As an author, I am also a lover of reading, and I can tell you, this one is worth reading! The one question I have for Walter Danley is: When is the 2nd book going to be out?
Reading Blasted Past was very interesting because it was an unusual story. I enjoyed it very much. Walter, my son, the author, yes, he is my son, and I’m his 101 year old mother. He does a great story using many unusual facts and Texas hill country history. Do read Blasted Past. You will like it, and wonder how Jim Nagel is doing in Boerne, Texas.
Blasted past is well researched and well written. It is not just a thriller and not just an action packed western written by a well-informed, knowledgeable, and wise writer. It is a thought provoking journey into the past and a testimony to the fact that people aren’t good or bad because of the color of their skin or their culture but their character is developed in their skin and culture depending on the decisions they make in spite of those units. I recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure, anyone who likes history, and anyone who thinks deeply. I particularly enjoyed visiting country that I spent twenty years in.
