Beyond the apocalypse, humanity's future is being decided. It's been three months since the cruise ship M/S Atlantica arrived in a hostile new world. The survivors dream of building a home, but just as their hopes rise, they learn the true cost of saving thousands of people from catastrophe. Conrad Wakefield, the architect of the Locus project, killed billions. Fleeing, Wakefield unleashes the full fury of the advanced weaponry of his ship, the Osiris , leaving a trail of death and destruction. Commander Heather Slater and her battle-damaged destroyer, the USS Paul Ignatius , relentlessly pursue, hungry for revenge. But two stowaways hide aboard Osiris . Marine Jack Cohen and Karl Grayson, a CIA assassin, have more in common than they care to admit. They must use every skill they have to evade Wakefield's elite mercenaries and bring him to justice. As they explore the secrets of Osiris , they discover the fate of this new Earth depends on whether the mysterious artificial intelligence aboard truly has humanity's best interests at heart. When the last battle comes, they will have to decide who, and what, to trust.
Well, the peace certainly didn't last very long with the bunch of idiots left representing humanity! We've found out what Conrad Wakefield and his cabal of extremely wealthy individuals did to save themselves and humanity, but not many people are liking the information. The leadership aboard the M/S Atlantica and the USS Ignatius, believe that Mr. Wakefield needs to be held accountable for what he did. Now, that's kind of understandable, but what does it matter now? It's all over and done so what's the point? Were they going to hang Wakefield and his apparent accomplice, Admiral John Reynolds? I don't see what purpose that would serve.
Still, the USS Ignatius thought it was a bad-ass war ship that could take down the Osiris without much problem. That doesn't go so well. But, you'll find that two people on the "good guys" side do manage to get themselves aboard the Osiris at the very last minute. While these two definitely have their differences, they are going to have to work together if they are going to survive on the Osiris, which might be highly unlikely. We're also aware of a third person aboard the Osiris that might be in a position to help thwart Mr. Conrad's plans, then again, she might not.
Meanwhile, the threat from the mountain is coming closer. Everything they have built in their small land-based community has to go or it will be destroyed. What they though was going to be a permanent home to the thousands from all these ships, now becomes a gigantic job in saving what they can. Everything must go or it will be consumed by what's coming! There's a lot of work to be done.
Speaking of work. The pirates were using the Titan, a huge container ship, as their home base. I'm amaze at the description of what these huge ocean-going ships can haul. I've seen them in pictures, but never consider just how large they are. The description given by the author makes these things seem really, really huge and getting to anything and everything in one of these would be quite a problem. I sure would liked to have seen that ships manifest. I can't imagine all the stuff that would have had to have been brought to ensure civilization could continue. Who would have thought to use a ship like this to provide for the future of mankind?
Finally, we're at last introduced to "the kid" known as Etch. This has been mentioned a few times in the past, but who or what this is, is certainly a mystery that you'll soon find out solved. I can now understand why it wouldn't have worked for the USS Ignatius to have sunk the Osiris. How does this Etch fit into the story? Well, it could mean just about everything and explain a lot of things, I think, but these people need to survive and stop destroying each other.
And then, we get glimpses of something happening on Mars! How in the heck does that have anything to do with this story? Well, I don't know. While the author pretty much tied all the lose ends together in this final book, the activities on Mars don't seem to be a done deal. What does that mean for the future of humanity on this future Earth. I'm not sure.
Great series, great writing. I'm very glad I read all three books even though I was reluctant to do so. I don't think you'll be disappointed if you read them either.
I've really enjoyed this series so far, and this book does not disappoint. Everything we've seen so far finally comes together and wraps up nicely. And yet... there remains the possibility of further books in future.
The Locus Trilogy has been a really great science fiction thriller, and showcases the best from both genres. Here's hoping we see more again sometime. :)
I was about a quarter of the way through Unfathomed before I began to comprehend what was going on. Mid way through I was completely hooked. I could not put my e reader down until I was done with Osiriis. I especially liked the chapters at the end on how the new/old Earth was going to be repopulated. The Terraforming of Mars was equally intriguing.
Very readable. Action scenes, well done. The three volumes are well integrated and the conclusion is satisfying. The wildlife was a little fanciful and my least favorite part. 10,000,000 years is a bit of a stretch imagination-wise. Characters were mostly well -formed and interesting. Will continue to follow.
This series is awesome . I love how Ralph's characters r so real. There is no black & white. Good or evil. Everyone is shades of grey. Everyone given the right motivation is capable of both good and evil...and depending on that motivation maybe what was evil turns out to b good & vice versa.. I am eagerly awaiting the next installment😍
Great 3 book series ( hope there will be more!), entertaining, exciting, and interesting. I enjoyed the characters and even more so that they were three dimensional. The only regret was that there wasn’t more exploration of the world around them. Start with book 1, you will not be disappointed.
Hard men allow us to sleep peacefully at night. They are much more accepted today compaired to 20 years ago. Hey the rich and powerful still manipulate. I liked the series and was unable to put it down until I was thru. Full of indomitable human spirit. A very good read!
Great ending to a great story line. The story picks up right where book two ends and takes off and keeps moving up until the end. Everything wraps up nice and neat with a little surprise at the very end.
Having created an interesting and unusual world this book takes the story forward and ends some of the conflicts set up in the first two books. Room for more, I hope!
I hate writing reviews. But on a rare occasion I feel compelled to do so. Mr Kern’s books have interesting characters, unique situations, and a smooth flow. I always look forward to his next offering..
Just finished reading all three of the books in the series and could not stop until I had finished all of them. They are action packed and full of surprises if you like end of the world with a twist then you have to read these.
I lost lots of sleep, reading into the wee hours of the morning. The series is different than my usual murder mystery, but Oh. My. Word. What an exciting, thrilling, world it was! I highly recommend this book, and the series!
Yes. I just read all three of the Locus series back to back and am whining because Mars! No pat answers in this yarn. Set aside whatever else you have planned. It’s that good.
A great end to a wonderful series! Plenty of drama, intrigue , tragedy and hope. There's a lot of philosophical issues touched on also so there's quite a bit to be taken from this story. Personally I'd have wanted a bit more info on Mars.
etch is an Air. jack is a hero. Karl is a spook. we need everyone to get rid of the meglomaniacs and start over as a better society. I was very impressed with this series and recommend you spend some time here.
Excellent read well thought out, really enjoyed how the story play out, would be interesting to see how the story could continue, 5stars, really enjoyed this series of books.
