Hekate's Chalice
Adept Solutions, Book 1
By: Teagan Kearney
Narrated by: Elisabeth Lagelee
This is an audible book I requested and the review is voluntary.
I found this book fun and enjoyable. A PI is hired to find a supernatural object but they are not the only one who is looking for it. It has humor, action, great fantasy, great characters, good plot, and it is a short novel. A good taste for what the series will be about. I liked it!
The narrator was good and was easy to understand.

I started this story totally not sure what to expect and found myself pulled in immediately. Truthfully I am not sure what made me like this so much but I really got into the characters from the moment they were introduced. Each one was very unique and even on short acquaintance made me like them. The world they inhabit is still a little vague and could use some more fleshing out to make it seem more real. I had a few instances of the names of characters changing within the same paragraph in some instances, which can be quite disconcerting. Other than that one thing it is written in a style that definitely grabs your attention if you like the subject matter.

Jean Baptiste also known as J.B. is running his fathers detective agency, though it is not for a good reason. Someone ran down Jean Baptiste Sr. and he is lying in the hospital in a coma while his son tries to save the family business. Working with J.B. are an interesting cast of characters, there is Zhanna who is a six inch faerie of the Irayisi race working off her probation there, Nikki a half elf/ half imp, and the twins Gemma and Jason.

Hekate sends her niece to enlist Jean Baptiste Sr. to locate her chalice which has come up missing at a very bad time. She needs it back soon and so takes a chance on J.B. and his crew. What they find out is more complicated than they expected. The search for the person who hit J.B. Sr is also not going well. They have to find the chalice to keep the agency going but there is danger involved that they do not see.

Definitely want to read more about these characters and see where they go from this point. Well worth the time of anyone who likes a little magic and mayhem.

Loved this book. At first I wasn’t sure but now I know it was setting up the world and characters for stories in the future. I loved the group. The narrator was slightly annoying with the fairy’s voice but, hey, what does a fairy sound like? She had a good fairy voice. I set my audible speed higher so it helped. It would be so much fun to work for this group. This book was good, but I feel like each one will get even better.

I really loved reading this story. It’s a classic mystery detective story with a paranormal twist. I can almost se Bogart in the role as the detective. I loved the twists and turns of the story combined with the use of language to pull out the characters. I will definitely get the next one in the series.

First, I have to start off by stating that I got this book free of charge in exchange for a review, but as I always state, this does not in any way impact my review. My reviews are always honest and my own.

The narration was pretty good, and I had no trouble distinguishing between the different characters. The delivery was smooth and well paced.

The plots are not overcomplicated; JB and his team take a job, investigate into the case and follow the leads, and then get the bad guy and save the day, all without much effort really, and with the help of JB's grandfather, who happens to be a powerful demon:) The only problem is, they have it almost too easy; the bad guys turn out to be not so powerful, the obstacles are overcome in an instant and problems are not so problematic...

This story takes place in a detective agency full of paranormal characters. JB has taken over the agency after his father was hit by a car and lies in a coma. The case is to find a chalice for a witch.

The story was interesting and I liked how the mystery of the chalice intertwined with the events of JB's father's accident. However, there wasn't a lot of character development and it just felt a bit flat for me. It just seemed like there was a lot of complaining by everyone in the agency about each other.

I listened to this book -- The narrator, Elisabeth Lagalee, did a good job. She had voices for the various characters - although the male voices were my least favorite.

My Review: ✰✰✰✰

This was a really fun introduction to some really awesome characters. So far there are only two books in this series, and I have only read the first one, but I really hope Ms. Kearney is hard at work on more of these.

There was no real depth to this because it was a novella and there just is never enough of one to get lost in it! But it is a super beginning to the series and introduced us to the supernatural investigators of JB’s business. JB’s having a rough time right now with his father in a coma and his grandfather dropping in after a long time not being around. And I do mean a really long time, like decades! He’s a bit scary, too. The private investigation business JB’s taking over from his father is rapidly going under unless he can get some more clients with well-lined pockets. And he only has a year to do it.

The author has given us a cast of characters to really have some fun with! There’s a tiny faerie named Zhanna who’s on probation for internet crimes. There are the copper-haired twins, Jason and Gemma, who are nothing alike. Hekate is a witch who tells the future by the month for the mayor on Sunday after church and gives tarot readings for local business leaders. Nikki is only half imp, but she’s full-on organization and computer skills to kill for. JB, as in Jean-Baptiste Jr., is from a long line of daemons. Remember the grandfather who has dropped in after decades? Well, he just pops in out of the aether, like from hell.

I’ve got the second (also a novella) book ready to read when I get a chance. I recommend this lively little gem to those of you who like what I’m calling a “magical cozy mystery with bite”.

Hekates Chalice Adept Solutions bk 1 by Teagan Kearney Review
What happens when you try to cheat the mayor of the best advice around! Trouble with a capital “T”!

What did I like? I thought this was a very imaginative and refreshing novella with interesting characters and have downloaded the next book which is already out. I liked the characters and the way that they played off one another. The little fairy was the cutest character and the interaction between her and the other employees was so funny! Of course, who could not fall in love with the handsome JB!

What will you like? Witty, mystery, intrigue, action, humor, romance and on top of all that throw in magically challenged love for fantasy. Very developed plot with the cutest characters plus a cast of the wizards, witches, daemons, fairies and all things that will go bump in the night or in this case the story! I received this from the author as an ARC for an honest review with no other compensation.

This book has been hiding in my library for a little while now and I'm kind of mad I missed it. It was actually pretty good. I am not usually a fan of novellas. I tend to need more story. In my very non- professional opinion, I woulda taken all 4 of these books and make one big, bad a$$ novel. But what do I know, I could be statistically on the wrong side of that lol. Maybe most people would rather read shorter books. I know my husband would lol. But I digress.
I'm not going to lie, it took me a few chapters to really get into this book. There are a lot of characters in this series. And while most of them where great, and original. It took me a little while to get them all straight. I think if there was a little more book, I would have loved to learn more about the fairy and the Imp especially! But I do have the next 2 books so I am hopeful more will come out in book two. I cant wait to see what happens. The ending definitely makes you want to read/listen to the next book ASAP. Actually, now that I am thinking about it, There is a 2 pack you can get with books 1 & 2, I would definitely think about getting that one. Its totally worth it, and your probably going to wish you did if you only get book 1 lol. But if your looking for a fun, quick little book that is part of a series, this is it! I can't wait to start book #2.

I have received this book for an honest review because I requested it and I can do that sort of thing.

JB AKA Jean Baptiste Junior has been tasked to search for a chalice that was stolen right under a powerful witch's nose. On top of that he is working cases without his dad headache someone has taken him out.

This case is a case that will make or break his business. JB tries his hardest to figure out who stole the chalice and why. As the story progressed it seemed as though everything that he has been working on, his father's accident and the case seems to start to intertwine with one another.

This book has intrigued and playful at times. There were moments where I wanted to see JB embrace his quarter demon side but he seems to be afraid of it. I don't know what or why he is afraid but I would like that explored in the next book since this is book one of a series. I would also love to see JB interact with his father's side of the family. I think getting to know his demon side is going to be really interesting.

The narrator was great sometimes but then flat at others. When it came to the characters she did a fantastic job but when it just came to narrating the story it fell flat for me.

Another Urban Fantasy novel centred around the role of Private Investigator would seem to be fairly unoriginal, but it mostly works due to the varied cast which isn't focused on the more usual supernatural creatures. The story is entertaining enough and serves to introduce this cast of characters very well, thus providing a good foundation for future books in the series.

The narrator's tone seemed a little too subdued and probably didn't enhance the overall story as much as possible, but she did do a good job with making the characters distinctive enough.

Overall, a quick and entertaining listen that makes me interested in subsequent books in the series.

As long as we all agree this was not a full out novel, my review stays at four stars. The characters were unique, interesting, funny and not at all what you would expect in your run of the mill urban fantasy. We have a half imp, a faery, a quarter fire demon-part elf and god knows what the twins actually are. This cohort works in a PI firm solving cases and the case in this story is the theft of a chalice from a local witch coven.

The story is written with humor and is quite fast paced. My only critique is, why go with the novella format? I think Ms. Kearney has the chops, so write the whole novel already!

[received free for review -audio book // narrator - 3 stars - (fairy voice - 5stars)]
-----

What do a demon-elf-human, imp-human, 2 humans with psychic abilities, and a fairy have in common?
When you are looking for something light, with a bit humour this book should do. Yes, this is another story series about a detective in the paranormal world, but the spin on the quirky and unconventional characters make it a charming read.
If you are looking for a serious hard-core detective mystery story, this book is not for you.
It is a clean, not quite cozy, style book that could fall under the young adult category.

This story was a short novella, and it definitely felt like it. I wanted more. The characters were fun, and I wished the author had been able to develop their characters a bit more. I am particularly interested to see what supernatural powers JB has, since he has quite an "interesting" lineage, as is revealed towards the end of the novella. JB's entire crew at the P.I. firm is full of surprises, and I am looking forward to reading the next installment. Overall, a fun beginning to what could be an interesting series.

Witches are missing their chalice and JB & company must find it. Jb’s dad is in a coma and no one knows why. Oh yeah and JB is part demon..... let the adventures begin.

Witches, death, demons, werewolves and other creatures but it’s still cute. I really enjoy the worlds built here. The characters too.
Narration is excellent, Elisabeth Lagelee does a great job. I will continue this series as new books come out. It’s a good escape.

When PI Jean Baptiste (JB for short) gets a call from a local coven leader, he and his multi talented team are ready to dive in to help find a missing magical chalice, but with witches, demons and all measure of magical beings involved, he might need a little help ... like from the very powerful grandfather he barely knows.
Kidnapping, murder and all sorts of mayhem abound in this one, and the investigative team are an interesting lot with personalities that provide plenty of variety and a lot to like.
This is a good, solid story with a lot of promise as a series.

Wonderful story!

This was a short read for me, but for once it wasn't either slim on details or have a chiffhanger. The special investigator's all have interesting what they are. I would love to learn more about the twins Gemma and her twin Jason. The true fairy was just so cute! By the way they explain a bit about her, on my gosh you can almost picture her! I would love to read another book with these characters. Fleshed out a tiny bit more and more background. Lovely story!!

This book actually deserves over 5 stars I only wished it was a bit longer, but the story was excellent. JB is a private detective, who is trying to run the family business or having to go take a job he doesn’t want, if the business fails. The business isn’t looking good until they catch a case that leads his team through a ton of action and suspense. It definitely leaves you wanting more. When it ended I was sad there’s definitely some loose ends that hopefully get tied in the next book.

Dnf. I really, really wanted to line edit. The author has some interesting turns of phrase, but they stick out like sore thumbs in otherwise mediocre storytelling. A lot of telling, not showing, thin plot and two dimensional characters. With more work, this could really be good, but as it is, I couldn't care what happened to the characters.

An interesting mix of young supernatural hybrids proving themselves as PI's. I enjoyed the detail about Zhanna and could picture her trying to alleviate her boredom, and it looks as if romance might be in the air for JB Jnr. The introduction of grandfather Ascepius seems to indicate a future with more interaction on the demon side. A fun read.

Hekate’s Chalice (Adept Solutions #1), my first (short) read/listen from author Teagan Kearney, although I own five of her books I’d never gotten around to reading one. I was given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. Elisabeth Lagelee’s talented narration & wide variety of voices added to the well-written book's enjoyment. It wasn't a bad story and it flowed well. I found some of the characters frustrating at times. The narration was... interesting. Some of the voices sounded a little too similar to other characters for me... and at times, a little robotic. Overall, a nice story!

A bit flat, and symptomatic of trying too hard to get everything into an Urban Fantasy.
Not bad for a detective story, but the paranormal stuff left much to be desired :(

I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of this book :) this was a phenomenal read :) it's a first story in a series of novellas, so my review will be a bit shorter as well.. after all, I don't want to spoil you anything ;) so let me tell you a bit about characters and the plot of this book :) JB is the current owner of Adept solutions, a detective agency that he took over from his dad... what's unusual about him and his employees is that all of them are... not exactly humans... or just humans ;) JB himself is part daemon, Gemma and Jason are humans (and twins), but with certain... gifts and abilities, Zhanna is a fairy and Nikki is part imp :) each of the books in this series... and I know since I am currently reading the third one ;) evolves around a different case at the same time allowing us to get to know more about the whole group :) that's pretty much all I can tell you without giving away too much, so let me jump into all the reasons why I adored this story :)

Like I mentioned, each book is focused on a different case, and with this first story, JB and his team are tasked with finding the missing chalice... it's a very important artifact, and the whole theft was kept secret... they have only a few days to solve everything and find the chalice... :) so before the end of this story we will have the answers... :) additional note, this whole series takes place in an alternate version of our world, where there are all sorts of paranormal creatures, and people are aware of them :) it definitely gives so many possibilities for very interesting stories to tell... :) even though the whole novella wasn't very long I really liked how the whole case progressed :) obviously, I can't tell you anything about it :) what's more important, within not so many pages Teagan Kearney was able to make me absolutely fell in love with the whole cast of characters :) that first story is a fantastic introduction into a very diverse group, where each and every person is different and has his or her own personality... to be honest, I am unable to pick just one of them to name as a favourite of mine ;) the writing style is amazing and entertaining, so you can't help but finish the book in one sitting ;) generally, I have nothing to say but praises about this book :) if you haven't already, definitely give it a try :)

XOXO

JB runs a detective agency looking into the theft of a chalice from a local Coven, who use it to advise clients facing big decisions. They only have a few days to solve the mystery.

OK the first problem here were the characters. JB won't fire the lazy and useless Jason as he fears Jason's gorgeous sister will also quit. Nikki is jealous that Zhanna has better computer skills than her and bitches about her style being copied by her rival every day. Zhanna is a fairy serving a detention sentence on Earth and does nothing but whine, complain and wind up Nikki. I don't really like any of them much. It is also pretty dull. We get every detail of every outfit Zhanna is wearing and she changes several times a day. We are told frequently that Nikki hates her and told constantly how Zhanna has to take breaks for sleep through the day because of energy burnout. I fail to see why the author has to keep telling these facts over and over and over as I was getting really frustrated by the repetition! We are reminded all the time that JB likes Gemma but is too nice to try and break up her relationship with a bad boyfriend. Yes we get it, enough already!

The fashion details and repetition got more annoying as the book went on. I just couldn't stand it by the end. I won't be reading on in the series.
