Sam Ryder's life already sucks and it's about to get worse when he's fired from his dead-end job as a programmer. He's about to head home to escape into his favorite RPG, Alien Civilization, when he's offered a thrill-ride on a death machine (AKA motorcycle) by a gorgeous woman straight out of one of his games.
Before Sam can say "WTF?" he's been whisked away to a dark world of monsters and goddesses, his body transformed from Outcast to Warrior, the second Level on a ladder that may eventually carry him all the way to Demigod.
Trapped in this horrifying world, Sam must find a way to reignite the dwindling army of Warriors before the legions of monsters breach the ward shields that have protected the Three goddesses for centuries. His best chance is to reach the next level: Protector.
Disclaimer: This book has monster slaying, cursing, heavy violence, and a bunch of exotic goddesses and alien women. The novel is not meant for people under the age of 18.
The writing is decent, the syntax is flowing nicely, few grammar problems. Overall the book has the fundamentals of a decent book. If not every single last character in this book was completely insufferable, a horrible person, loathesome or worse.
Our MC is abducted and turned into a hunk. So much for wish fulfillment. This is however where the good things end. A lot of his motivation seems to be stolen from better books and better authors. The whole "it feels like I matter in this world and can shape my own destiny!" from Tamer: King of Dinosaurs is stolen almost 1:1.
Here's the problem with this. It doesn't fit especially not in the first book. He's basically cannon fodder. Expect to only live a few nights before he will be horrendously mauled. Given a loincloth, a shoddy weapon and expected to fight.
The Goddesses responsible for this and their Seeker are absolutely horrendous. They're stuck up, selfish, annoying, whiny and callous. The Seeker is especially great. "So you don't like sleeping on the rock floor, you don't like eating rats for food, you don't like having a living expectation of about 13 days? WOW HUMANS ARE SO WHINY!"
The Goddesses aren't much better. They're effectively the divine equivalent of prostitutes. They've managed to ruin their own world, how isn't further elaborated on only that they're the cause of all the troubles ailing the planet. Yet they're meant to be sympathethic. The MC at least constantly tells us so.
They have their Seeker regularly abduct people in large numbers. Most of whom are thrown into a pit to die. With the survivors getting the glorious quest of dying a few nights later in their defense. Why are they doing this? To save the world? The universe? Nope. Solely to save themselves. They're willing to sacrifice hundreds if not thousands to save their own hide. If you do particularly well you might be invited to get laid. Sex is used as a reward, an otherwise completely meaningless one.
Pretty much everyone is banging everyone. Which just helps the cheapen that aspect of the story. No relationships between the characters ever go any deeper, everyone is incredible "casual" and "cool" about all these things which in my case just further alienated me and caused me to not give a damn. Because if nobody in the story does, why would I?
The best part of the story is when it turns out that the goddesses aren't just sending people to their death in uncounted numbers. They are actually HOARDING a huge number of magical armor and weapons. All of whom would massively boast the survival rate of the people they have fighting for them. Apparently they hold those back for their own use, even though they not once join the fray and aren't shown to be capable of doing so.
The MC instantly turns loyal towards the goddesses and excuses their every behaviour, because casual sex. The MC somehow gives the whole story about "finaly mattering" when he's worthless cannon fodder as far as the goddesses and seeker are concerned. He tries to convince the reader a situation one wouldn't wish upon their most hated enemy is somehow an improvement, because casual sex.
This book reads a lot like J.A.C's old builder books before the main hero lost his mind. There is a lot of action, and the main character is a bit dense, but not so dense that he detracts from the story. The characters around him aren't that deep, but that's not what the story focus is. It's about the action, and lord knows there's a lot of it in here, in the sheets and in the streets. I don't label this a LitRPG because the only element that has that is the leveling up portion. Other than that, there's NOTHING else RPG like in the game. The story is a fast and fun one. If you're looking for deep characters, skip this book. If you're looking for something that's action packed, kinda like an 90's movie. This is the one for you.
The premise behind this story is so horrifically horrible that I couldn’t even finish it, I got more than halfway through before I gave up. To be kidnapped dumped into an arena to fight monsters more powerful than you and if you lose your die and if you escape you get the right to fight to protect the ones who kidnapped you. Oh yeah the average life expectancy of someone who survives is about 12 days. They deliberately target people who susceptible to their influence and then tried to seduce you with having sex with them. I could go on and on about how stupid many of the things in this story are, but I honestly don’t feel like wasting my time on it. Read this story at your own risk, who knows maybe you might like it, and you can have dreams about been thrown into the circle and maybe surviving to have your 12 days of fun.
“Warrior: Monster Slayer (The Monsterworld Saga #1)” is a book to avoid. I don’t remember why I listened to it, but the story was pretty silly.
MC Sam finds himself battling monsters to protect goddesses, and both having and refusing frivolous sex with his fellow monster fighters. That’s it. I’m sorry to have listened to it and hope to save you the time I wasted. Sometimes my interest in sci-fi and paranormal just doesn’t pay off! 2*
If you enjoyed Warrior, send me a direct message to my Goodreads account or an e-mail to davidestesbooks(at)gmail(dot)com and I'll hook you up with some swag!
Very nearly didn't finish this one. The writing isn't great, but it's made worse by the strange cadence and inflections of the reader. He doesn't alter his way of speaking for the numerous internal asides and it comes off as extreamly awkward. The whole thing is also very gratuitous and comes across like the author just really needs to get laid a few times before writing.
But on to the plot... it's Tamer: King of Dinosaurs. Normal dude dropped into deadly world with little to no warning and forced to survive. Some LitRPG aspects are included but they are mostly superfluous. But where Tamer: King of Dinosaurs at least has some mystery as to why the events are happening. This one is explained and the explanation make very little sense. I know that's part of the point, so the main character can have something to fix, but it's too obvious and dumb. The main character doesn't come across as clever in seeing the issue, he's just not being dumb. Meh, I'm not going to continue this series.
This is escapism at its purest form for me. Sam is a gamer and a programmer. He gets an invitation to go somewhere and fight monsters. This is where the fun begins! Body enhancement, crazy situations, and many different types of monsters to fight! Fun times.
its a good, well paced story with the right amount of mystery and action. The character development is very good as well and you get to know them well, they do grow organically as they gain experience through their adventure. The story itself it quite original and is very entertaining, making you want more, which is probably why i finished it the same day i started it, i couldn't put it down. It has lots of promise and i cant wait to read the second installment.
mediocre shading into good. the sex scenes were sub par
Some harem lit books are all about the sex, almost nothing but sex with a tissue thin plot to hold it all together. Warrior: Monster Slayer is at the other end of the spectrum, with battle, despair, and a desperate struggle to postpone your inevitable gruesome death by another few hours. ...Oh and a few short sex scenes here and there, 3 that I can remember so let's say there were 4 because they were unmemorable. The other thing about this book is the raw deal. The characters were all abducted from their worlds to fight to the death on Monsterworld. 90% die on day one. and by die, They get eaten, alive. And what is the glorious reward for winning? NOTHING! You'll just die tomorrow or lie to see your friends and lovers die in front of you before you are eventually worn down and devored . The average life span of a warrior is 12 days. Feeling aroused? When most of the characters talk about quitting, where quitting means dying I start thinking about quitting, where quitting means putting this book down and reading something more fun.
Really the title sums it up. The character advances once essentially in the book, not through his own choice. And no information is given about the advancements benefits. And his harem is non existent. He has sex with three goddesses in the very last chapter. That’s the harem. Finally, I just didn’t enjoy the world. It’s an unrealistic setting. I didn’t enjoy it.
3 to 3.5 stars, I just love these type of books, they are like junk food and I can't help but enjoy them. For sure they are not for everyone but they are my guilt pleasure. I am so close to making it a 4 star book but I will wait for book 2 to make sure the author is able to keep this series as enjoyable as the first book.
Update: The second book was just as good so I have updated this one to 4 stars for the series itself.
the story is that of 3 godesses kidnapps our mc, and then makes him fight for his life. The mc realizes that they are only using him and dont care about him, but a pair of tits and boom! The mc has developed stockholms syndrome. the only reason he doesent die in every single fight he is in, is thanks too dumb luck. There is also no harem in it either.
This was exceptionally thought out and written. Still not sure why there was a low rating. The only thing I have to say is that books two and three slowly draw out the perceived plot holes and close them nicely. Thoroughly enjoying this series.
Sam is recruited by Eve the Finder, who turns out to be a pretty heartless machine who finds half a dozen people every week to ten days, to turn loose in an environment that chews them up and spits them out in a matter of days. Sam happens to be the rare person who survives, first the first day, then the critical average of 14 days, and keeps going.
Sam Ryder, the main character, is a real nerd with all the physical and character flaws that the stereotype requires. The transformation to the alternate world also includes a remaking by being cocooned and engulfed in goddess spit. Yuck, but it provides carte blanche for each character to get remade into a paragon of their species and sex.
Beatrice "Beat" turns out to be a stalwart companion on the front line with Sam, who is an attractive female who remains a friend, almost like a sister.
Vrill the pink haired alien who has turned away from the standard program of fighting to protect the goddesses, but still saves Sam his first night and a few times afterward. She also has a unique way of getting renewed and refreshed beyond sleeping and eating.
Lace the demanding, self-important cat woman. Great fighter, but Sam gets promoted over her because she doesn't have people skills.
For reasons that are slowly revealed, three goddesses are the only good creatures left alive in this alternate world, and their hearts have literally been physical ripped out by their arch enemies, who are slowly destroying the world as the goddesses die (takes a long time even with their hearts removed, since, well, divinity).
Sam, Beat, and Vrill go the the "mount doom" where the Morgross live to try and disrupt their plans. One of the best parts of the story with a dose of solid dungeon crawling, solving puzzles, and fighting monsters with a little more reason then the nightly slaughters. Vrill gets imprisoned by the evil bosses, three Morgross to counter balance the three dying goddesses. Sam gets a magic boomerang.
Sam eventually gets "leveled" up, which involves another coma in a cocoon, and he comes out with very heightened physical characteristics, to the point of being inhuman.
So, its a quick fun read. The characters are believable enough, although the world is not explained well or much, and just gets filled in enough to provide the next nightly challenge. The dying goddesses seem to exist outside of a conventional cosmology or pantheon and have no worshippers. Eve's travel abilities, and whether it is between planets, solar systems, universes, etc., is left completely unexplained. So lots of holes, and the reader just goes along for the ride.
The thing is, I do not think the author ever asked himself WHY??? Why fight at all?? Does it matter if you die in your first day, on the average 12th day, or 100 years later??? if you still die??? What are they fighting for?? Sex?? extended day of life? It's Pyrrhic at best and totally futile. There is NO HOPE that people will survive, much less that you will be able to return to Earth or your planet of origin. It doesn't matter if the main character gets sex, because it only makes him weaker in the next Night. This story needs the reason WHY?? The 3 Goddesses aren't even from Earth. There is no investment in trying to save the Goddesses that are close to finally dying... But the problem is not trying to find a reason to keep on fighting, the problem in this Sci-Fi novel series is that the author didn't really give anyone a way out, a reason why??? something to keep the story going... Not even if it's the best sensual liaison in the multiverse, is it worth it. (because having sex will weaken anyone). Without food, without water, without any reason to fight, to survive, the best thing that could happen to this story is that all the readers burn it with the "eternal burning demon blood"... It's not a game, there is no balance, no possibility to "win or overcome". Games by logic, rationality and common sense require balance, and a chance to overcome, to win, to return to Earth...But this author screw*d that pooch in this illogical, irrational, nonsensical Sci-Fi novel series... But if that were not absurd or impossible enough, the author pretends that a regular guy, with no martial arts skills, no above average intelligence, no charisma, no strategic planning, no real life military experience, that was just strengthened by the spit of three Goddesses, will be able to overcome the impossible?? Can something that has no odds to be able to win, really win??
This is a very good science-fiction-fantasy adventure. LitRPG it is not. There are no stats, no skills, no experience, and any game mechanics are reduced to levels alone. Regardless of that, it’s still a good story. Our hero, Sam Ryder lives a mundane life, his only enjoyment is the video games he plays. Heading home after work he is abducted by a beautiful woman on a motorcycle and taken to another world. The world had been controlled by three goddesses, who now rely upon wards to keep them protected. Protected from a demonic god that overthrew them and ripped out their hearts. It is in this state that Sam Ryder finds them, slowly, but eventually dying. It is Sam’s role as a warrior, along with other captives, to battle the demonic horde and help in protecting the goddesses. The ultimate goal would be to kill the demon god and return the hearts to the goddesses. This first volume was free on Audible Plus but there are four more volumes to the series for sale. I liked this first book very much but now I must decide to commit credits to four more books. I will have to ponder on this for now.
Sam Ryder, programmer, well out of work programmer and gamer and now, thanks to a goddess, warrior. In WARRIOR : MONSTER SLAYER BOOK ONE BY SAM RYDER, Sam is literally drugged and kidnapped and taken to a world where warriors dont last very long because of all the bad dude monsters. The good news is Sam has a new body along with new strengths . But will that help him fight trolls, monster dogs and everything else that lives during the "black" ?
For a first in the series audiobook it was not too bad. I like the premise around it and I sincerely hope as the series progresses the plot will be more about killing the monsters than bedding the goddesses and all the rest of the females . The narration was done by Soren Gray and was done pretty well. All in all I gave it a three stars as I am hoping, like I said before, the rest of the series will make up for what WARRIOR did in action.
I recieved this audiobook free in exchange for an honest review
Monster Slayer is the first book in a series of godesses, monsters (duh), levels, and your typical LitRPG elements. The story has it's humorous points, and it tends to treat most things with irreverance, which is just fine, since that's where most of the amusement comes from. If you're not a joking kind of person, you might want to steer clear of this one, even though it's a decent story, I mean, I wouldn't want anyone to be offended just on my say so.
The writing is quite annoying. Popular culture reference jokes are not really funny when that all the jokes, besides self degrading ones. Constantly reminding how "lame" he used to be and how he is not that any more is exhausting. The beginning was poor, but the book had decent moments, not good ones, but decent. The author and the mc share the same name...really... two supporting characters were fine, the rest not as much. I feel any little depth this book has was forced and as such unconvincing.
An interesting story, but I'm not fully sold on it yet
I read this on KU and thus have a lower standard than for books I buy. I'm going to read book 2 and see how I feel after getting further in. It has worldbuilding, but I still don't really get the setting yet. It took a while to reach the point where the story started to grab me, but I want to see what happens next.
Based on an elementary premise that could double as a short D&D campaign, this book nevertheless takes the simple and turns it into something much more. Something interesting and enjoyable, something different and intriguing. You want to find out what will happen next. I do.
This was a fun read! Lots of different elements combine to make an interesting combination of science fiction and fantasy. Yes, it has adult content, but it works well with the story.
With the name of the book i thought the MC was going to be a bad-ass. Sadly he is a huge wuss. lets people walk all over him, he is a huge goody goody white knight. i could not get past halfway, i had to give up.
I loved this book although have to say that ending has me wanting to really hate the book. Why must the strongest character in the book be captured and have this whole foreshadowing where she will eventually become evil. That is just evil.
Hard to understand this book ..the main character is not someone I can relate too!! The story is confusing 3 Gods of what? All of the people are dying for what? It's not easy to read
A good book, especially if you are an RPG or anime fan. There is action and adventure. For me, the sex scenes are bit over the top for me, but the rest is good. I truly enjoy that all the characters being godly is at least sort of explained. On to book two.
I bought this as a stand alone but recently saw the box set and bought it as well. That’s what I’m reading now. I thoroughly enjoyed the first book and I’m looking forward to see how Sam levels up. Well worth the read in my opinion
