Bullied and lonely, beithir shifter Amber is not having the best of times at Ben Vair, a college for supernatural teenagers. Until Izban arrives, a mage who is much more than he seems... and his blue hair is rather sexy, too.
But when she agrees to help him on his quest, she gets more than she bargained for. Which may not be such a bad thing.
***A Seven Wardens spin-off taking place at the same time as From the Deeps. It can be read as a standalone novella.***
Skye MacKinnon is a USA Today & International Bestselling Author whose books are filled with strong heroines who don't have to choose.
She embraces her Scottishness with fantastical Scottish settings and a dash of mythology, no matter if she's writing about Celtic gods, cat shifters, or the streets of Edinburgh.
When she's not typing away at her favourite cafe, Skye loves dried mango, as much exotic tea as she can squeeze into her cupboards, and being covered in pet hair by her tiny black cat (who's secretly a demon).
This is the second book in the Seven Wardens series. This is a short novella. Amber is a beithir shifter. A beither is a serpent. The word also means lightening. Amber goes to college at Ben Vair. It is a college for supernatural people. She is lonely at school and is often bullied. The girls are frequently cutting her tail off. Izban is a mage. He arrives at Ben Vair looking for ancient artifacts for his grandfather. The headmistress catches him but he convinces her he is the new professor at the college. Izban has an affinity to the cold and ice. Amber helps him find the ruby he is looking for by her sense of smell. Izban and Amber become friends quickly through their adventure. Amber and Izban have an instant attraction to each other. Amber is attacked by the Voice and disappears. Izban has vowed to find her. I look forward to the next book to see Amber and Izban reconnect. Amber and Izban do not know they are wardens. This was a fast paced and enjoyable read. The author is building an interesting world. These two characters are a great addition. I look forward to the next book in the Seven Wardens series. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
This is a spin-off book from the Seven Wardens series and best read between book one and two. It tells the story of beithir shifter Amber and the teacher, Izban, who isn’t actually a teacher, but a mage who has been sent with a list of items to obtain for his grandfather, the Head Mage, but without knowing the reason why. Amber meets him when she is going down to the secret lab in the basement, to help her new tail to regrow, after the bully girls picked on her as usual and pulled her tail off. Her shifted state is a cross between a huge snake with a dragon head and a long tail. In human form, she still has her tail and Tasmin and her pals have found out that she can regrow it, so take great amusement and enjoyment of pulling it off as often as she can. She normally wears baggy clothing to have her tail curl up around her waist, but it never stops these wicked girls! Izban finds the first two items on his grandfather’s list, but only manages to locate the second due to Amber’s sense of smell. When they find out the real use of the items on the list, they seek to destroy them, needing her lightening powers, while as well as magic, he also has ice as an element. She thinks him quite good looking, but neither of them take any action to begin with, her having believed he was a teacher at Ben Vair College and she only a student. Amber and Izban are two of the people Macey and her men are looking for. Amber’s fate is not a favourable one, with the Voice wanting her and the other Wardens, leaving Izban to start on his quest to rescue her. This short story can be read as a standalones story, as it just covers Ice and Lightening, who don’t yet know their future roles as Wardens. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
This story is character building... Amber and Izban's story. Amber is at Ben Vair college and about to graduate.... she's in the class bully's sights who has already torn her tail off a few times now. Lukily it'll grow back but evidently it's uncomfortable without it. One of the staff has shown her a room in the basement where the enchantments help her to grow it back quicker. While there she meets a ghost with whom she becomes friends with. She runs into Izban in the hallway then again in one of her classes, as he's posing as a substitute teacher. Izban is on a hunt for items for his grandfather, which is why he's at the school. Several items are there and he just has to find them.... one of the items takes him to the basement the day Amber is there trying to regrow her tail. They bump into each other and when he tells her what he's looking for she shows him where the item is at and once they collect it Amber introduces Izban to Bea. Bea finds out what Izban is doing and sees the list and tells him the items are for a spell to make someone immortal... I think this is a trick by The Voice. AMber and Izban decide to destoy the item they just found, thinking that will thwart his grandfathers plans. However they walk right into The Voice's plan and he barges his way into Amber's mind and snatches her right out of the air. Izban goes to where he thought he saw her fall but there is no one there and no clue as to where she went or how. Now Amber is missing and Izban is determined to find her. So far everything is flowing nicely, great world and character building, and lots of slow burn romance going on. Looking forward to the next book.

In the previous book we learned of the Seven Wardens and Macey has found herself in love with three men, all are Wardens. Cam is Wind, Flint is Fire, Jared is Earth and Macey they assume is Water. From the poem we also know Lightening is imprisoned and Ice is searching for her. They've found Ice but before we continue, this book tells us all about Lightening and Ice.
Amber is Lightening and a Beithir, her kind don't usually come into power until they turn twenty or so, and she is only eighteen. In her human form she has a tail, one she keeps hidden under large shirts. Since finding out she can regrow the tail a group of shifter females have made her life difficult by tearing it off.
Izban is Ice and a Mage, he is on a quest of sorts for his grandfather. In order to have access to where a couple of these artifacts are hidden, he poses as a substitute teacher. He learns some interesting things about the students and the school, but knows he can't do anything about the injustices he sees.
It's as he is searching for the second item on his list he runs into Amber, she knows where the item is.
She also introduces him to a ghost residing in the basements of the school. She's the one who tells him what the items on his list are for. It's at that moment Izbar knows he can't complete his task or return home.
Fast-paced, adventurous, flirty and snarky, you won't be able to put this book down.
The author calls this a spin-off of the Seven Wardens series, but it is more of a prequel showcasing two characters in the main series, showing how they met and their first “adventure” together. As I really enjoyed the Seven Wardens series, I found this look at Amber and Izban’s meeting and first interactions fascinating. It takes place while Amber is still at a supernatural college, currently being tormented by an unpleasant wolf shifter and her cronies who keep taking Amber's tail. She is a beithir, part dragon and part snake who has the human form as well. Izban fakes being a substitute instructor while seeking items on a list given to him by his grandfather. Izban is a mage and his grandfather is, essentially, the top mage. Izban doesn't know why his grandfather wants these items and is quite alarmed when he finds out why. Amber and Izban work together in a way that was fun to watch as you see Amber start to come into her powers as a beithir. The climax scene was quite exciting and imaginative. The story ends on a cliffhanger, with neither the reader nor Izban knowing what happened to Amber. Luckily, we meet her again in the Seven Wardens series. I enjoyed this short novella that added depth to a series I already enjoyed.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
Amber is a Beithir, a snake shifter. She;s in school and the tail snatching is really getting old. Her classmates take her tail just to see how often and how fast she can regenerate her tail. Striding through the halls she bumps into a big blue wall, a man who she finds out is her teacher, Mr. Smith or Izban. He does the storm casting class and is surprised that Amber has bucket loads of magic within her but has no idea that she does. No matter, he;s there for a purpose. While searching for a ruby he runs into Amber in her Beithir form and is totally amazed and perplexed and wondering whether it;s a coincidence or a put up job of his grandfather to test him, especially since she seems to know where to find what he;s looking for. Then Amber introduces him to Bea, the resident ghost and her foresight into what his grandfather has him looking for totally stuns him. Darling story about two people totally different from each other but both full of curiosity that can make a bond for good or ill. Fantastic read and story!

This spin-off story is to explain to the reader the relationship between Amber (Lightning and a Beithir shifter -- snake/dragon combination) and Izban (Ice and a Mage) and how the two of them originally met.
Izban, a mage who isn’t actually a teacher but posing as a substitute, has been sent by his grandfather, the Head Mage, with a list of items to obtain. He doesn’t know why, however. When he runs into Amber in the basement, where she is getting help re-growing her tail, she finds the item for him right away with her sense of smell. She introduces him to a ghost of a 17th century woman, Bea, who tells them the actual use for the items on the list (a spell for immortality), so Izban realizes they need to destroy the items. He needs her lightning powers.
Amber and Izban are two of the people Macey and her men are looking for -- Ice and Lightning – and are unaware of their future prophesied roles as Wardens. With Izban and the resident ghost, Amber unlocks some of her magic. This is a standalone book, but supplements information in the story of the "Seven Wardens".
Great addition to the Seven Wardens series with this spin off short story, it gives you more of an insight to Amber and is best read between book one and two. In the previous book we learned about the Seven Wardens and Macey has found herself in love with three men who all happen to be Wardens. Cam is Wind, Flint is Fire, Jared is Earth and Macey is assumed to be Water.
This story is character building... Amber and Izban's story. Amber is a Beithir shifter at Ben Vair college (A Supernatural/Paranormal College) and is about to graduate! It hasn’t been an easy time and the Class Bully likes to pull her tale off … dick move! Her shifted state is similar to a large snake with a dragon head and a long tail; her tail is with her even in her “Human” form.
This short story can be read as a standalones story, as it just covers Ice and Lightening, who don’t yet know their future roles as Wardens.
Well written, interesting characters and fun read!
🐍Amber stumbles from bad to worse as a blue-haired stranger gets her mixed up in some powerful magic! July 15, 2018 Format: Kindle Edition 👍Great fantasy adventure for the young teenage girl reader, featuring Amber, a misfit, bullied shifter heroine who discovers her unique strengths with the help of a blue-haired substitute teacher on a mysterious quest. It's simply but well-written, giving a good grasp of the beleaguered heroine's emotions. Exciting action and major questions to answer, including how far have Amber's powers really developed.
It's brief, which is fine, but I had not realized it would end on a major cliffhanger, which was the reason I did not go for all 5 🌟's. I would like to know more about heroine Amber and where she ends up!
I read a complimentary copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
This is the prequel and introduction to Seven Guardian series. There is this mythical creature, snake/ dragon shifter, who is being bullied by the other shifters in school. She can shift to a giant snake /dragon.
The other character is a mage, who is gathering magical items for his grandfather to have immortality. The personalities of the characters our being flesh out. There isn't any real plot except at the end where does snake/dragon is kidnap.
This book should we read before starting the series, the understanding of the seven Guardians series is more comprehensive if he got done with this book.
I give it a four stars because it is so short, a cliffhanger, and a prequel. Sometimes the authors write a prequel to bridge a gap later to increase readers understanding.
Our heroine is not having a good time, but the arrival of our hero might just change that in many ways.
This is book 1.5 of the series, a spinoff. It works just fine as a standalone, so it can be enjoyed in any order.
This is a paranormal romance story with a heavy dose of Scottish folklore. The story is well written and easy to read as I would expect. The characters and setting are also well developed and quite intriguing, almost as much fun as the plot itself. I particularly liked the Scottish elements seeded throughout. Speaking of the plot, it is a good one including plenty of action and mystery to keep things interesting. All together, this made for a fantastic read and I look forward to reading more of the series.
Highly recommended.

First, this book continues on, so no HEA, with that being said... I really liked this adventure 7 Wardens series, loved the romance and the characters and plot. I was highly disappointed in the fact that the book ended! It is a must read, now I have to be patient and wait for the next book to come out to find out what happens. Okay, I’m addicted to this adventure series, just when I think the book is wrapping up, it ends for another adventure and a wait! Sigh, I love the characters and the steamy scenes. I liked that Amber and Izban have their own story before the 7 Wardens start, however short the story was and how she barely tapped into her powers before...

This is a short story that links in with the Seven Wardens series, and should ideally be read after book 1 (though it could also be read as a standalone story too, it just makes more sense this way!). Explaining the relationship between Amber (lightning) and Izban (Ice) and how they met, it's a great read, full of fun, character and intrigue. But it definitely leaves you with lots of questions too - such as what's going on at the school, what Izban's grandfather is really up to, and did they succeed in stopping him? - that I can only hope will be answered in the coming books. Highly recommended reading for all Seven Wardens readers. NB I received a complimentary copy of this book, but I always give an HONEST review based wholly on my own opinions
Amber is a beithir shifter, kind of a mix of snake and dragon, a very rare kind of shifter. She is in her last year at school and looking forward to its end, as there is a group of women who bully her. One day there is a new teacher, Izban, a very unusual teacher, and together with him and a resident ghost Amber unlocks some of her magic. This is a standalone book, but binds into the story of the "7 Wardens". I really enjoyed the balance of feelings between Amber and Izban, how he is trying to help her, but also letting her find her own way when necessary. There seems to be a near perfect balance between them. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Great fantasy adventure about Amber; both a misfit and a bullied shifter heroine, who discovers her unique strengths with the help of a blue-haired substitute teacher on a mysterious quest. It is simple but well written and gives a good picture of the emotions of the beleaguered heroine. Exciting action and important questions to answer, including how much Amber's powers really evolved.
It's short, which is fine, but I didn't realize it would end with a major cliffhanger. So far everything is flowing nicely, great world and character building, and lots of slow burn romance going on. I'd love to know more about heroine Amber and where she ends up!

Sorry no spoilers of any kind because I do not like doing that! So this is all I’m going say about this book and that is it’s an awesome book! Fast pace and short but it’s still a very great story! Even though it ended when it really started getting good! Skye MacKinnon and Laura Greenwood definitely know how to create amazing characters and weave very believable realities which is probably why I try my best to read every book that they written together because they are a fantastic team when it comes to the books they create! So yes I most definitely recommend this book to anyone who’s interested in crawling into this story and getting lost within its pages!
** Cliffhanger Warning! ** I like this short story. It's like a prequel to the Seven Wardens series, while it's also a parallel story. This is about how Amber and Izban meet. It's a college adventure, with a hint of romance between a female beithir (Scottish dragon) and a male mage. These two are also known as Lightning and Ice, throughout the other books in the series.
I enjoy learning more about the world of the series, as well as some of the mythology of Amber's kind of dragon. It's neat to see how this couple started on their part of the bigger story, and I look forward to reading the next book.
I enjoyed this short read about Amber, a bullied snake shifter that was in school. She meets Izban, a blued haired substitute teacher and Mage on a mission to find some artifacts for his grandfather. This story is a fun adventurous fantasy story and I really enjoyed the fact that it dealt with Amber dealing with bullies and the emotional issues she went through because of that. I gave this book stars instead of five because it ended in a cliff hanger and I have to wait to find out what happens in that story.

I really enjoy reading the back story on Amber and Izban. Amber is a beithir shifter at Ben Vair Academy. She hates it there. She is bullied until the day that she bumps into Izban. Izban is a mage who is at the school to gather things for his grandfather. He pretends to be a teacher so he can look for the items. Amber runs into Izban later that night below the school in the basement area. They have an interesting conversation before Izban realizes that he can't do what he has been tasked to do. Will they be able to destroy those items before it's too late?

'Through the Storms' is actually a spin-off of the "Seven Wardens" series and takes place at the same time as 'From the Deeps' in order to explain the relationship between Amber, Lightning mixed with a Beither shifter, a snake/dragon combination, and Izban, Ice and a Mage). These are just two of the people Macey and her men are looking for although, Ice and Lightning are unaware of their prophesied roles as Wardens. Izban and the help of the resident ghost helped Amber unlock some of her magic. It was fascinating to read Scottish lore along the way as this book added further information to the "Seven Wardens". There's plenty of action and mystery that kept me entertained.
Or not? Amber and Izban are 2 powerfull people, full of magic, that happened to meet at school. She is here to learn, he is here for a darker purpose. Izban discover that he is a tool for his grandfather. And drag Amber in a grander scheme. It is possible that the Elder Mage is The Voice that Macey hears? I must read the rest of the series to find out! And with each book, this story become more and more interesting!

This is a short spinoff novella from the Seven Wardens series, kind of a prequel if you will. You get an intro to Izban, and through him you get a little info on Amber at the end of book one. In this book you get a bit of their backstory, how they met, when, etc. It's not a necessary read to understand the Seven Wardens series but I did enjoy getting to know Izban and Amber better. It's a short read, took me less than an hour.

This book opens with Amber having had her tail torn off. AGAIN. Tamsin and her bunch just love to do that. Amber does NOT like losing her tail because it is what helps her with balance. She is down in the basement of the school where she finds Izban, a teacher who is not really a teacher at the school. Izban is there to find some items for his grandfather, one of them being a ruby with Incubus saliva on it This story includes intrigue and a budding romance between Izban and Amber and ends in a cliffhanger. Highly recommended.
I've read a lot of books written by Laura Greenwood; she is one of my favorite authors. I can’t wait to read more of her books.
This is part of the Seven Wardens Series; it is actually a spin-off of the series and can be read as a stand-alone book. She has written another great book. Amber is a shifter attending Ben Vair College for the supernatural teenagers. After Izban arrives she agrees to help him on one of his quests.

This is a stand-alone and a much welcomed part of this author's From the Deep series. This is a time before Amber became the lightning warden, attending the college for supernatural teens where she first meets the brooding mage Izban. I loved reading about the earlier time of their relationship. Made me appreciate and enjoy the rest of the series even more.

This was a great look into how the characters met that we meet at the end of the first book in the series. It was a great insight into who they are and how they met. I loved the banter between the characters. It was a great read and the ending gives more clues as to who the villain is in the series. I have my suspicions but I won't say.
Five out of five stars.
