Tales of a Viscount

Rate this book
Lady Rachel Lush has spent her Seasons as a wallflower.

After a tragedy leaves her brokenhearted, she sets a course for Spinsterhood.
Being alone means no one can hurt you.

But her mind begins to change when a man from her past returns... A soldier who can protect her.

Reuben Smith... or rather Lord Eastridge... may have earned his title while fighting for England, but at night, when he removes his mask, she sees the man beneath.

A bastard and former footman turned viscount. Very few are able to ignore his common blood.

However, Lady Rachel sees his soul.

She alone understands the pauper and the prince are one man.

And while he tries to distance himself at balls, the dangerous dark streets of London will force them together.

Protecting Rachel is something he knows he can do, but denying his growing feelings becomes just as tiring as pretending to fit into civilized Society.

In the end, will Rachel be able to turn her pauper into a prince?
Or will Society force them to be forever apart?

DNF 16%. Even the hero's giant hands didn't save this book from being a dud. Silly and unrealistic premise. Inconsistencies. Bland characters. Simplistic dialogue.

Reuben Smith is one of a group of children who was left at the Mary Elizabeth Best Home for Orphans, and formed their own family. Two of Reuben’s adopted sisters have had their parentage leaked to the press, revealing secrets that the ton would like to stay hidden. Some members of society have felt so threatened, that they have formed the Blue Blood Coalition, which is dedicated to rejecting commoners into their midst. Reuben is a former footman and soldier, whose heroic actions have earned him the title of Viscount Eastridge. He’ll never be fully accepted by those who feel threatened by him, but he can count on the support of the Earl of Woodley, and his daughter, Rachel. While Reuben was still a footman, he worked in the earl’s home, earning his trust, as part of his duties were to watch over Rachel, who was ten years his junior.

Rachel, now twenty-two years old, is strongly attracted to Reuben, but he treats her as if she were still a young child. Truthfully, he’s fighting his own attraction for her, but doesn’t feel himself worthy. Surprisingly, Rachel’s father realizes his daughter’s feelings, and would support the match if only Reuben would unbend enough to allow the romance to progress. Reuben learned who his biological father was years ago, and is determined that no one ever find out. He also has noble parentage, and is anxious that the person who has been leaking the information to the press not reveal his. As Reuben and Rachel dance around each other, he is also trying to determine who the mysterious assassin is who is attempting to kill the king.

THE TALES OF A VISCOUNT is a fabulous read that is probably the best of the HEIRS OF HIGH SOCIETY series so far. This story took some unexpected turns which surprised me and kept me turning the pages as fast as I could. I do recommend reading the previous books in the series to fully absorb all that has happened previously. Now I am anxiously waiting to read the remaining two brothers’ stories, especially the mysterious and sad Chris.

The intimacy is limited to kisses. I received a complimentary copy of this book.

Editing!!

There was absolutely no way to read this book without being completely frustrated. The editing was horrible, in a few places the author even forgets who her own characters are, what their relationships are to the each other.

Rachel Lush has been in love with Reuben Smith since she was a child and he was her father's footman. After leaving for war, he returns a decade later as a decorated war hero and a newly minted Viscount. After being reacquainted, they're drawn to each other, and Rachel's obvious pursual of Reuben, and the urging of his sisters, he still cannot commit to Rachel because of his feelings of unworthiness. Eventually, love wins.

For me this story was disjointed. There is two separate story arcs: Reuben's military mission, and the love story between him and Rachel. The military story makes sense; the love story does not. Rachel is not very likable and comes off desperate and needy with her daddy's approval to throw herself at Reuben...his former footman. Now, perhaps he is a progressive man, but none of that seems realistic--then or now. Reuben has not seen Rachel since she was a young teenager, comes back and finds that the now grown Rachel is beautiful, though dressed like a prude. He's on the fence about his feelings, and she is all but described as wallflower-plain till she lowers that bodice line and then poof! Men everywhere. Of course, Reuben is one, drooling after her boobs, I can only assume. But by then, she's turned her nose up at him and won't speak to him until he "knows what to do with her." Really?

Again Meyers writes a clean novel, with no sex just sexual chemistry (kinda). But this, compared the two previous stories, falls short. It seemed forced and fake, with unlikable characters. Reuben, on one hand, is the man's man, war hero but is too wishy-washy to know what to do with a beautiful woman that is throwing herself at him with daddy's permission. Have yet to meet a man who in that scenario "wouldn't know what to do." And then you have Rachel, a dowdy, childlike woman turned-overnight-to-an ingenue that gets the man she pursued for 3/4 of the story, but then turns him down because it isn't done the right way. Eyeroll.

Liked the stories of Alex & Justin/Rose & Gerard FAR better. Despite this one blunder, I'm looking forward to the upcoming stories of Nash & Christmas (I hope).

I just loved this book and this series is growing on me. In this book there is a lot of adventure and mystery and different twist on what happens on this quest to friendship and love and how this family grows and expends.

This is Rachel and Reubens story. They met while Reuben worked as a footman in Rachels home. He was hired by her father to protect her from harm. Little did he know that danger he was hired for was still a threat as she became of age. The relationship started growing at this point. Reuben went off to war and was a decorated war hero who was Knighted by the king in which he was given a title.

Rachel has become friends with his sister Rose and they have shared much between them. Than he see's Rachel all grown up at his sister Rose's wedding. Rachel has had feelings for him and Rose is determined that she marry her brother and at her wedding reintroduces him to Rachel. They find they are attracted to each other and he feels he is not good enough to Marry her but Rachel is determined to be noticed by him. Her father offers to help in a way but she doesn't want her fathers help but he gives them a push.

Her father has taught her how to mange property and other things to run an estate and knowing that Reuben needs advise he tells him to write to Jay to ask advise, He gives him another property own by himself he intends to leave to his daughter and than gives his daughter a push telling her what he did.

Reuben is still working for the government looking for a assassin to kill the king. He is hesitant at first as his father is the one who askes this of him and Reuben believes his father doesn't know who he is.

Rachel is under the impression that Reuben see's her as a child and makes some dramatic changes to her appearance and personality in order to win his attention. With Reuben trying to fight his real feelings for her.

This is where the adventure beings and it will surprise you at times, upset you and even make you laugh and cry. It is a well written romance and a must read.

Another hit for me. The writing by this author completely involves me in the story...you are there with the characters. This time we have Lady Rachel Lush and Ruben Smith who was once a footman in Rachel’s household when they were young. Rueben is also one of the Heirs of Hight Society and one of the orphans or illegitimate offspring of the aristocracy of England who has been brought up in the Best House. Reuben is now Lord Eastridge and is a hero of the Nepoleonic Wars and was awarded a title. Rachel was engaged at one time when she was much younger but her fiancé died and she had decided she would be a spinster afterwards. But with the return of Rueben, once a very dear friend and comforter to Rachel, comes hope for a future much different than she had come to expect for herself. Even though Rueben cares deeply for Rachel, he has deep feelings of inadequacy and is also hunting an assassin. It looks like it is going to take some work to get these two together. I am enjoy I’m enjoying watching the other character being developed here.

This is the story of Lady Rachel Lush and Rueben Smith. Rueben is one of the Heirs of High Society and a member of the self made Smith family who were orphaned illegitimate children of the aristocracy being raised in the Best House and is now been made Lord Eastridge because of heroic acts during the Nepolianic wars. Rachel and Rueben were very close when they were younger as he was a footman in Rachel’s household and someone she holds very dear. Rachel has her sights set on Rueben but Rueben is still very unsure of his place in Society and is very sure there is no place for he and Rachel to be together. Oh and some one within the aristocracy has their sights on assassinating a high ranking member .

I think what I love most about this particular book is seeing the characters develop and the possibilities for stories to come.

Also, there is a very nice little novelette at the end included as a special gift that I enjoyed very much.

I could go on and on but then that would be telling the story....

This was a really really good book. It's a story about Lady Rachel Lush who has spent her Seasons as a wallflower. But now that Reuben Smith, who is the newly made Lord Eastridge, has returned things are about to change. These two have a past, when she was young he was her families footman. Reuben was her friend and her protector, then he became a soldier and saved the king. Rachel lost a fiance and became a wallflower. But now they're back together and these two are on the path to finding true love. So what could go wrong. Maybe it's the fact that the truth about Reuben's father is about to be revealed or that Reuben is on the trail of someone who is trying to kill the king. Rachel finds herself right in the middle of it all. I loved reading this book, it drew me in right from the start. Watching Rachel stepping out and becoming a woman and seeing how Reuben reacted was great fun. I look forward to finding out what happen next in this series. This book is a clean romance and although it is part of a series it can be read as a stand alone. I recommend this book to all who love a good romance.

 Novella special

For this book I give it 5 stars of it's own it was a really fun Romance. It included a Crooked Uncle, a run away niece with a prized mare to sell in London and a Earl who is staying away from London until a scandal dies down. When you mix them together you get a great romance.

All the elements of a great story are contained here, but I was a little disappointed in the way the pieces were put together. Some aspects of the plot grabbed my attention so strongly, and I ended up feeling like a lot more could have been done. With one character's madness, for instance. The reader gets just a hint of what is really going on with this person, and then their part is done in the story. I wish there had been more depth.

I also felt that there could have been a lot more depth to Rachel's character development. Throughout the book, she realizes things about herself, makes changes to her appearance and attitude. There were times when I felt that some of the most interesting parts of the book were drastically understated. The result was that I finished the book but still felt like something more can/should happen. That is not my favorite way of ending a story.

Overall, though, it is a good story. It's an enjoyable and light-hearted read. It was easy weekend reading for me, and is a book that I will most likely read again.

I truly enjoyed this book. Reuben truly didn’t know what to do with Rachel and the way he felt around her. Rachel has loved Reuben since she was 15 years old and he was merely a footman in her home. Now that he’s been gifted a Viscount title for his service to the crown, Rachel secretly offers him help with his estate and openly offers her heart. Reuben must find who is the threat to the crown, can he court Rachel as a cover with out totally losing his heart or will he fall all the more in love with her?
Rachel is a spirited, strong woman who must break out of her shell to prove that she is not the darling girl everyone thinks she is. Reuben knows he’s not worthy of Rachel but wants her just the same. There are some great twists and turns that I did not see coming. Looking forward to reading the next book in this wonderful series. The only down fall of the book is that it needed to be edited better.

I just love this series. This was Reuben's story and it was lovely. In this series, Heirs of High Society, adults who were raised in an orphanage learn they are sons and daughters of his ranking people in the ton. No one knows who is "outing" all of the heirs but nonetheless these heirs are introduced to society.

Reuben, Lord Eastridge, is now in society and is highly sought after because of his good looks. But he has served as a protector for Rachel Lush in her youth. Now Rachel is grown up. She and Reuben have feelings for one another but will they act upon them is the question. Reuben is busy tracking down an assassin but when Rachel finds herself in need of protection, Reuben is the one to do it. He courts her as a way of keeping her safe but while doing so loses his heart to her.

This series is so good. It is the underdog who finally wins in this series. I cannot wait for the next one.

Lady Rachel Lush is out heroine & she has spent her seasons as a wallflower. Being a wallflower & becoming a spinster is her choice after she experienced tragedy/broken heart so you don't open yourself up to more hurt. Then a soldier, who was had been a footman in their household in the past, returns & he can protect her. Reuben Smith, now a Viscount or Lord Eastridge, a title he earned while fighting for England. He grew up knowing he was a bastard & now he has to try to fit in with the Ton & their rules. Can an ex-soldier, now a viscount find love & can a wallflower, who has decided to become a spinster, convince him what a good man he is & they belong together? Can another orphan from the original group find happiness? I highly recommend this read to all historical romance readers!

Wonderful series!

I didn't think the author could best her Wardington Park series, but seriously,I love this series more! Five orphans who band together and grow up as their own family! Now, as adults, someone is letting their real parentage be known! this book is Ruben's story, and is it a great one! He has fallen for a lady he used to be a footman for! Knighted and bestowed with a title due to his war efforts, he is unsure if they can now be together. Add to that someone has released his father's name! What a lot of twists and turns, adventure and a bit of mystery with a lot of romance! You will love this story! I can't wait for the next one! HolmEs Meyer's typing is up to speed! Great read!!

This is a great series. Eleanor Meyers delivers another wonderful Regency romance, with mystery, love, and lots of twists and turns. Another orphan is revealed as the son of a lord. Some approve, many do not. Will the lady get her man, will the lord get his lady, or will Society keep them apart? You'll have to read it to find out.
Like her other series, these books can be read as a standalone, but you get more depth by reading the previous books. I love how the author includes people from the other books, but also provides enough detail that you don't need to have read those books. Regency romances are one of my guilty pleasures, and this one doesn't disappoint.

I love Regency period romance, but couldn't get past chapter 5. The writing is childish , with a mish mash of characters dropped willy nilly into a poorly devised, story line. Meyers gives us lots of saccharine prose with no character development, and no depth of historical presentation.

The idea of a group of illegitimate children suddenly exposed to society, could be used with a much more sophisticated
approach, but this book is written at a simple grade school level, in the the style of a bare bones, , Dick and Jane Cinderella story. I frankly do not understand how this can be presented as adult fiction

Tales of a Viscount (Heirs of High Society) (A Regency) by Eleanor Meyers is an exciting Regency romance. The characters are charming and engaging, a bit dramatic at times, but throughly enjoyable. The storyline is well written, unpredictable, fast paced, with a bit of mystery, romance and of course, love. Can a soldier, now a viscount find true happiness? Can a wallflower, who has decided to become a spinster, due to past tragedy and hurt, really find her HEA? To find out pick up TALES OF A VISCOUNT, you'll be glad you did.
Delightful, and satisfying Regency Romance

Such a good read!!

I love Eleanor Meyer!! She always brings alive an intriguing plot line!!! I have read everything she has out. She used blasphemy in the 2nd book she added at the end of this one. I was disappointed especially as we raise horses, and I loved the plot. :) (it would have been 5 stars for me then!!!)
Hoping this is not a trend.
If you are not a Meyer fan, I encourage you to start at the beginning of her first series and read straight through!!! You will fall in love with each and every character, and will not be disappointed!!! Enjoy!!!!

This is an entertaining story of Rueben Smith, one of the Smith “siblings ,” andRachael. Rueben, like the other Smiths, grew up in the Best House Orphanage. He worked as a footman for Rachael’s father until he bought a commission to the army. He fought in the war, finding Napoleon twice and was awarded an Earldom. As Lord Eastridge, he is asked by his biological father to hunt for an assassin bent on killing the king. He and Rachael have feelings for each other, but he feels she deserves better than a former footman. Can they find love?

Lady Rachael Lush is usually a wallflower but not because she has to be. That's just how she likes to be until Ruben Smith comes back into her life. Ruben has been made Lord Eastridge because of service to the King but feels unworthy. He pushes Rachael away until he needs to protect her and maybe she's protecting him. Ruben was an orphan and has made a future for himself but will always see himself as an orphan. After all, he was a footman in Rachael's home until he got his commission.

Two stories. Both enjoyable.

Two stories. Both enjoyable.
I thoroughly appreciate the authors ability to tell a love story with opening the bedroom door.
I enjoyed the second much more than the first. The H reluctance caused two reactions. Either the I questioned his quick change of heart or wondered at his cowardice at avoiding his true feelings. But I loved the h. Brave and true.

The 2nd book was pure pleasure.

This book is not as long as it appears. It ends at the 68% mark. An unnamed novella and a sample of another book complete the rest of the book. I enjoyed the plot and the characters and would likely rate that portion as a 4. However grammar and typing errors significantly impacted the readability and enjoyment of this work. Also thoughts and ideas sometimes popped out of nowhere and then dangled in the wind. A good editor would do wonders for this book.

Loved the story about Reuben and Rachel. Reuben a harden solider who once was a footman in Lady Rachel’s home and know is Lord Eastridge. Rachel has mourned her fiancé for 6 years and realizes she more than likely will become a Spinster. When she meets Reuben again her heart starts to pitter patter again. A beautiful story of Reuben finally confronting his father and telling Lady Rachel he loves her!

The next installment in the Heirs series (Reuban's story) is as engaging as the rest of the series. The character and development of the characters is done very well. Eleanor tranports you to the ball rooms and parlors of regency England and leaves you wanting more I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Enjoying The Series Tremendously

Ms Meyers writes well and her subjects in this series provide lots of fodder for thought and wait about 'High Society' in the early 19th century. Several editing errors but not worrisome enough to spoil the flow and fun. I eagerly await the next bastard reveal. Good job all 'round.

This a good series. I enjoyed this book. Reuben is a dedicated soldier who is loyal and loves his family. Rachel is sweet and trustworthy. She wants Reuben, but he doesn't think he's good enough for her. More secrets are revealed in this book, some quite surprising. I anxiously awaiting the next book.

Rueben on is a strong, devoted, loving brother to his siblings by other mothers. The Smith family sticks together through strife and joy. Rachael fits perfectly into this family; Rueben just has to realize that fact.

I liked the idea of the series centered on the orphaned illegitimate children of the "Ton". But as the series progresses there is less and less true story and more padding of discription and repetitive writing. I skimmed most of the book to get to the story. What a waste!
