The memories unfold like a movie reel. Death row front and center. The gurney, bright lights, and white walls. The innocent man restrained with IVs in both arms. “Continue your work,” were the last words he spoke to her before his execution, which marked her first loss.
Roxanne Hollis is a head-strong, successful private investigator with a passion for wrongful convictions. Sam Rollins and Seth Carmichael are corporate lawyers who litigate problematic cases pro-bono.
The Blackwell family achieved the American dream, but murder plays no favorites. Unknowingly escaping the same fate, their live-in nanny, Cassandra Lovejoy, finds herself on trial, facing triple homicide.
Fifteen years later, Sam acquires the case, certain Cassandra’s innocent, but he needs Roxy’s investigative talents to prove it. Along with her fears of another loss, an unbeknownst love interest further complicates her life.
Deadly Opposition is a riveting story of one woman’s fight against the unforgiving hurdles of the criminal justice system.
I am not an avid reader, but I found this book and it peaked my interest...I found as I read the book, it read like a Netflix series... once I finished one chapter, I wanted to keep reading onto the next one to find out what happened. I thought that the author did a great job writing as I could see pictures in my mind of the scenes, as I read. Loved how the book ended....perfect for a sequel...keeping my eye out for the next one. If you have a head for criminal type novels, this one is for you. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.
Roxanne Hollis works to not only save Cassandra Lovejoy from a death sentence, she works to restore Cassandra’s faith in God. Roxanne’s long road to clearing Cassandra is fraught with personal attacks by a corrupt sheriff who will stop at nothing to keep Roxanne from freeing Cassandra. Through it all, Roxanne witnesses her deep trust in God. Author Tiffany Gobble presents a modern day suspenseful story of complex events that highlights our continued need for God’s intervention in our lives. I purchased this book at one of Gobble’s presentations. It’s obvious she has experience with the legal system. I’m looking forward to more of her books.
This was a mostly good book, with a few nitpicky problems that are probably solely my own problem. Thanks to this book, I am very interested in reading more books with a legal/investigative perspective.
Speaking of which, the legal aspect was very detailed and engaging. It was far from boring, and that's what excited me as I started reading. I was certainly learning things I didn't know, but I didn't feel it was a nonfiction book. I was learning about the case as Roxy did, and it played out great. The entire case, as well, was quite a mystery; I would never have guessed it, but it wasn't so complicated that I didn't understand when it was revealed. I did like how it seemed hopeless, but wasn't really.
The other main plot was the romance. This was the main sore spot for me, because as long as the focus stayed on the case, the story didn't seem to be contemporary. Once there were romantic feelings, however, the contemporary setting hit me full in the face. Plus, I felt that once the romantic feelings appeared, the relationship then sped up quite a bit. I get that Roxy and Seth had known each other for a while, and that's good. But I would have rathered that their long friendly relationship had been developed before the romance.
As characters, Seth and Roxy were both well-developed and believable. I especially liked Roxy's hesitance to enter another case after her previous disappointment. Seth's background, as well, was good; it explains his infatuation with Roxy. I like it when there's a reason for each person to admire the other. Rebecca was sweet, and how could one not feel bad for her?? Oh, and Sam and Heather were perfect for Roxy.
Other than the main characters, though, there were a few that I had no idea who they were. That could have been because I took kind of long breaks between reading, but then I reread the first chapters, and still couldn't identify them. Because of that, they probably could have been developed more, or at least mentioned as their connection. My very last, very minor complaint is that Roxy had a tattoo, and I never condone that. But it was mentioned only once, so it didn't bother me as much as it probably could have.
After the case was solved, I felt the ending went on a little long, but I suppose it was okay to finish the story of the other plot. It was mostly just resolution, and no conflict for several pages.
I also appreciated Roxy's faith; someone like her would easily think she could rely on her own strength, yet she had no trust in herself. It was the same with Sam and Seth and Rebecca. They all trusted God, even though they had a few reasons not to.
The best part of this book, hands down, was the legal aspect. The characters were admirable, and their Christian faith was probably the second best part of the book. The romance could have been implemented better, but it didn't completely overshadow the rest of the plot.
I have to admit I was skeptical at first. I'm not one for a sappy love story. I'm also not one for an overly Christian book. They tend to be cheesy. (Can I say that as a Christian?) I love the Lord and I love Christian reads.....if they aren't cheesy. Deadly Opposition held my attention and I didn't think the Christian tones were cheesy at all. In fact, I thought they were great and I appreciated them. I even wrote down a passage to save for myself where Roxy was telling her client (also a believer but a believer that was straying) how God uses us for His will and that He never leaves us. “ Did you know that scripture illustrates the miracle of turning anguish into joy? John 16 paints an image of how agony is meant to lead us to the birth of something. Jesus illustrated how painful childbirth is, but once the child is born, the mother forgets about the pain and focuses on the blessing of her child. If we trust Christ in our pain and don’t turn our backs in defiance, He will see the agony through to the end. We don’t see the whole picture like He does; in fact, our feeble brains cannot fathom a fraction of is plans, which is where our faith comes in. For whatever reason, this is a part of His plan, and trusting Him with this season of your life changes everything. Just because you’re mad doesn’t mean He won’t listen, nor does it indicate that He doesn’t love you. I heard a preacher say that our faith should not be anchored in our circumstance, but rather in a person, Jesus, who came and walked among us, experiencing life the way we do, and give His life as a ransom for us. Put your faith in Jesus, not your situation.”
The love between the main characters did develop a little fast for me. I would have liked that drawn out a little more with some more character development with Seth. Albeit Seth was in love with her for 10 years. But for the pace of the book it was okay. The mystery to be solved was great and made me read the whole book in one sitting. (3 hours)
This was slightly outside the genre I normally read but I love mystery/suspense novels. Since I knew this book was filled with Christian references, I was confident it would be safe from gory descriptions, profanity and unnecessary sexual references that seem to plague other books. We need more writers like this! The story starts with Roxy, a private investigator, reviewing the case of a woman who is accused of murdering the family she worked for. Cassandra is on death row, so Roxy only has a matter of weeks before the execution is to take place, to determine if justice will be served. Roxy has to overcome the failure of not being able to prove her previous client innocent - a disappointment that took her out of the investigative arena for a year. By the middle of the book I was fairly confident on who was behind Cassandra's conviction, but like a good story-teller, Ms. Gobble lays out the puzzle pieces one by one until you get the full picture! I stalled reading too many pages of the book in the beginning, because I could tell that once I got into the heart of it, it would be hard to put down and go to bed (and it was!). I loved the interaction between the characters in the book and how supportive the people around Roxy were. There is also an sweet romance that develops between Roxy and one of the attorneys she works for and had been friends with for years. I received a free copy book from the author in exchange for an honest review
Interesting read yet sad to know the injustice of our so-called justice system. This is a great Christian based love story with a twist of wrongful judicial convictions. Looking forward to the second book... there is going to be more right? Oprah needs to review this one!
This was a very easy read. I love how the characters talked freely about their faith. I believe this book would give a new Christian a lot of knowledge about Christianity without having to pick up a so-called "self help" book.
