A Shifter U Tale

Long nights lead to intrigue… and infatuation.

Chronically ill with a mysterious condition, Yusuf “Joey” Franke escapes his smothering family and doctors by moving halfway across the country to enroll in Cody College. Not long after arriving on campus, some of his symptoms disappear, only to be replaced by debilitating insomnia. Joey spends his nights wandering the halls of his dormitory and hanging out with gregarious and affable Owen, who works the night shift.

When he suddenly shifts from a sick college kid to a massive Asiatic lion, Joey discovers another side to Cody College—it’s a haven for shifters like himself… and like Owen, a part-time great horned owl. And being a shifter is hereditary, which means his parents have some explaining to do.

When Joey and Owen investigate, they discover more than they bargained for—a family deception, a dangerous enemy with international connections, and a love that might be too new to survive the backlash.

Apparently, the 3rd time’s finally a charm!

In this latest shifter installment, Yusuf has been plagued by illness since he was a child, and he’s tired of years and years of medical testing. So now he’s finally exerting his will and leaving home to go to college. What subsequently happens will forever change his life and brings about so many questions too. Luckily, there to help Yusef through all his shifter revelations is Owen, who’s been a steady presence and friend, gradually awakening Yusuf to long suppressed things he’s never had the time or energy to deal with, such as attraction and exploring his sexuality. As Owen aids Yusef in finding answers about his newfound abilities, their romance slowly deepens in and amongst all the mystery and secrets.

I kinda wish that the main underlying thread about the supernatural community was present from the start in this unique series, where the first two books barely have any common ground with each other or this book. It seems that the author has decided to coalesce this series into a more cohesive story arc as the next installment will carry the thread further, and the prospect of that makes things work so much better in my opinion.

Overall, an improved paced story with a fabulous MC in Owen, who for me, was the best thing about this book. He’s solid as a rock and just an all around nice guy with a heart full of good intentions. I really liked him, and Yusef was damn lucky to have him on his side! The next book hints at exploring the shady shifter underworld, and I look forward to learning more!

Hands down, The Night Owl and the Insomniac is my favourite book of the Shifter U series to date.

I don’t know if this was a case of right mood, right time, right book, or whether this story and these characters were an actual improvement on the two stories that came before in this supernaturally sweet, college-set series, but either way, I found myself enjoying this reading experience a great deal more than my previous two attempts.

Yusef, the unsuspecting lion shifter, who starts collage after decades of being ill and unable, meets Owen, the charming owl shifter who befriends Yusef and helps him understand and accept his brand-spanking new shifter awareness and the daunting new physical changes that go with such a discovery.

Their friendship is sweet, but their blossoming romance is sweeter, developing over the period of time that Yusef discovers his supernatural nature for the first time, leading to him subsequently facing some big questions relating to his heritage and his long-term health issues.

There’s a bit of a mystery component, too, where Yusef’s parents and the truth of his past are concerned, and even an itty-bitty bit of action and excitement in the final act, but mostly this was just a nice and easy NA-type romance, featuring two very compatible and adoring young supernatural beings.

I enjoyed it.

This has been a cute series, and I'll definitely continue to read any new books that come out, but I admit I keep wondering when more backstory and world building is going to happen.

My favorite of the series so far -- I thought Joey (or Yusuf, as Owen calls him) and Owen were adorable together. I loved how they reconnect through night activities because Joey had the insomnia, including playing chess.

I loved that they worked together when they found out that Joey was actually a shifter -- and Joey never knew about this. I liked the mystery behind it too, it provided some good action in the end, and gave the chance to show that Joey was pretty bad ass for an Asiatic Lion.

The ending put a smile to my face...

I really do love this series and The Night Owl and the Insomniac is officially my favorite of the three (shhhh - don’t tell the guys from #1 and #2). Yusef and Owen are just ideal characters and I simply liked them so much. Honestly, you could strip out all of the shifter shenanigans and I would still have loved the story just as much.

In the first two stories in the series, one MC in each couple is part of the badass variety of shifter, they are more “in the know” with the shifter council and are alpha-level level protective of their kind. The couples were intriguing and I loved them, but Yusef and Owen are different and I loved them even more.

Yusef and Owen are young men still figuring out their live and Yusef has the extra burden of discovering he’s a shifter. He’s been sickly his whole life, isolated because of his human medical issues. Once he gets to Cody College though he discovers his real deal is that he’s not human and once he learns to shift his health problems are gone. He’s actually completely normal for shifter physiology.

The author does a great job of balancing Yusef’s innocence with his new found independence and strength. It was my favorite part of the story. Owen wants nothing more than to take care of Yusef and make him happy. And while Yusef is tired of getting the mother hen treatment from everyone, he can’t help but be floored by the care and love Owen shows for him. He doesn’t really get it, but he’s smart enough to be flattered and his cluelessness is adorable.

I am making it sound more simplistic than it was. There was plenty of shifter drama and potential familial betrayal to stay within the theme of the series, and it did escalate the closeness between Yusef and Owen and my impatient self was completely fine with that. Their relationship didn’t feel rushed at all though and the fact that Yusef was never portrayed as a victim made me believe in a future HEA for these two.

The beauty of this story was in the pureness in the feelings Owen and Yusef have and I could write odes to the awesomeness that is Owen. It wasn’t until I started reading that I realized how much I’ve missed a relationship story like this and I would have loved to keep reading about these two. Yusef is discovering who he is and Owen is supporting him in every way and while it’s all new to Yusef he’s nothing if not honest in his feelings just like Owen is. It was so refreshing to read a love story like this.

This was the first story in the series where Buddy had more of a presence and I really hope he has a story coming soon. A grumpy bear who does yoga? Yes please! This one was a total treat though. I got my shifter fix along with a charmingly adorable love story. I’m already impatient for the next one.

I want to spend at least a semester at Cody College just to prowl around the campus grounds and see if I can see piles of discarded clothes or spot any of the shifters that attend in their shift. I find this community absolutely amazing and endearing that I can’t get enough. I thought I fell in love with Donnie and William in Stalking Buffalo Bill and then I thought I found more love in Simon and Ford in Chasing Thunderbird. But I didn’t know what love was until I met Yusuf and Owen. Goodness, this was such a journey and I loved every bit of it.

What always gets me about shifter stores is how varied they can be while still holding true to the shifter lore. Here, we have a young man who has believed for the last 15 years of his life that he has had some bizarre autoimmune disease being tested and tortured through modern medicine to find out what’s wrong to only be left disillusioned and sickly. But when Yusuf leaves the comfortable--and controlling--hold of his parents in Chicago to attend Cody College in Wyoming, he gets a new lesson that wasn’t on any course syllabus.

The meet cute with Yusuf and Owen was so freaking adorable. I love that Yusuf knew exactly how many steps would take him through Matthison Hall and how we get their first meeting with Owen overwatering a plant. It’s such a simple meeting and yet everything from that moment on is anything but simple for these two.

Yusuf aka Joey, but I prefer Yusuf just like Owen does, was a new sort of shifter for me because he has no idea that he is a shifter and that the majority of folks on campus are also shifters, or at least aware that they exist. All Yusuf knows is that he’s always been sick and that he can’t sleep at night because he gets an itchy feeling under his skin that keeps him up. Now, having read not only this series, but a good amount of shifter stories once I read that, I knew it was his shifter side wanting to get out. I just didn’t know what his shift would be until it happened, and I of course I immediately went to Google to see how amazing Yusuf would look. But at the same time, I hurt for him because OMG how crazy would it be for anyone to suddenly turn from human to animal and not know WTF was going on. It’s a good thing Yusuf was around friends when it happened and that Owen’s dad happens to be a doctor who works at the clinic where they quickly take Yusuf so he won’t hurt himself or anyone else while shifted.

Owen is so fantastic in this book. I love that this series doesn’t pair same species shifters but let's… well, nature take its course. Owen is a great horned owl and Yusuf shifts into Asiatic Lion so on paper these two shouldn’t work in their shift but the truly compliment each other so well.

The journey of discovery and acceptance Yusuf takes is a tough one. First, he has to accept he turns into an animal. Then he has to face the possibility that either he’s been adopted and his parents know nothing about his shifter side. Or that they have been lying to him for years and letting him be a test subject of horrible tests for years to keep their secret. Either way, it’s a path that leads Yusuf to a dangerous discovery and one where he has to make the choice to fully accept his lion or to walk from everything and everyone he has started to care about.
The author has a firm grasp on the Dreamspun Beyond line balancing the complexity of the shifter world with the fluff I’ve come to adore from the Dreamspun line. There is enough of both sides to keep you interested in the world building and swooning along with the romance as the couple finds their way to their HEA.

Owen and Yusuf were a pure pleasure to read. Owen is such a strong young man in both forms and he wants nothing than to take care of Yusuf. He knows from the beginning that being an owl isn’t the best shift to help a lion learn control. So the introduction of Buddy the bear gave moments of frustration for Yusuf, but high interest for this reader. Also, David… hmm. There are a couple guys who showed up in this book that I am curious about and honestly would love Buddy to find a mate who could handle the grumpy bear.

But back to Yusuf and Owen because I adored the holy heck out of them. Their romance was of the slow burn variety as Owen took his time with Yusuf who wasn’t only struggling with his new shifter side but his sexuality he hadn’t actually considered before. Being sick was all Yusuf knew so he isn’t sure if he’s gay, bi or just Owen sexual but he does know who his lion wants and who he wants to protect.

The secret with the parents went down really well and all the secrets were in line with a creepy paranormal theme as it should be. The end gave me a ridiculous amount of emotions that landed me with a firm hug to my Nook as I finished.

One quick thing… I am in LOVE with this cover! Wow. Yusuf on the cover with his eyes and light hair and that drawing of an owl right behind him. It does it for me so much!

Okay.
I’m wrapping this up.

This is another winner in this series and I hope the author has more stories from Shifter U for me.

The Night Owl and the Insomniac by J. Leigh Bailey is the third book in the Shifter U series and the twenty-third book in the Dreamspun Beyond series. I have read the other books in the Shifter U series, and this book while taking place at Cody College like the rest of the series, is a standalone book. There are cameos of Simon and Ford from the second book Chasing Thunderbird, but you do not need to have read the other books to understand what’s happening in this book. The Night Owl and the Insomniac is well written. I enjoyed the plot and that all of my questions were tied up by the end of the book. And I loved that Yusuf and Owen get their happy ending.

I like the attention to detail that the author gave to her characters. Both Yusuf and Owen’s characters fit the animal half of their personalities. Owen is a great horned owl and is both intelligent and extroverted. He loves to talk and also loves to mother hen people. Yusuf, on the other hand, is an Asiatic lion. Because of health conditions, he’s grown up isolated from society, which has resulted in him being introverted and socially awkward and figuring out his sexuality.

I really liked Yusuf “Joey” Franke. He has grown up being chronically ill with ever-changing symptoms, which has resulted in him being a Guinea pig for all kinds of test and treatments. Finally, fed up with it he escapes by enrolling in a college halfway across the country and moving there. Not long after arriving on campus, some of his symptoms disappear, only to be replaced by debilitating insomnia. With nothing else to do, he spends his nights wandering the halls of his dormitory and hanging out and playing chess with Owen, who works the night shift.

I also liked Owen. He was such a happy, upbeat person. Always including Joey in his activities like getting lunch with the guys and just hanging out. And forcing him to try new food combinations. I loved all of the little things he does each day to remind Joey that he’s thinking of him and there for him while they are apart. I also like how Owen has a grounding influence on Joey’s lion and is able to keep him calm and collected so that he doesn’t shift when he gets stressed. I liked how Owen was there for Joey when he shifted for the first time and helped him uncover his past to find the answers that he needs. I like how he complements Joey. They are just perfect together.
Overall, another great book in the Shifter U series and so far my favorite of the series. And another book in the Dreamspun Beyond series that hasn’t let me down. They are fast becoming a favorite of mine to review.

The Night Owl and the Insomniac is book 3 in the Shifter U series and while the first two books were somewhat interconnected, and while I suggest reading all three in order for maximum enjoyment, I think this book can be perfectly read as a standalone.

Yusuf/Joey has been suffering from some type of autoimmune disorder since he was 5 years old and now that he's moved from his parents' home in Chicago to attend school in Wyoming, he's been suffering from insomnia, which leads him to meet Owen, who covers the night shift in their dorm. They strike an easy friendship and bond through long talks and playing chess, until one night, the night of the full moon, Joey unexpectedly shifts into an asiatic lion, and he discovers a whole new world and some facts that he isn't too certain how to feel about, including the fact that Owen is a shifter as well and that Joey's parents might have been lying to him.

What he didn't expect was to find himself in the middle of a dangerous international operation or that it will test his budding relationship with Owen.

I loved Joey, he was such a sweet boy and had gone through a lot while his parents were trying to find out what was wrong with him. He was very socially awkward and naïve because of that, and it was lovely to see his awakening. I felt so bad about all the pressure and guilt he put on himself, but I was very glad he managed to work through it. I adored Owen, too, he was very supportive of Joey and I loved seeing him trying to help Joey in any way he could. Joey and Owen had amazing chemistry and being a huge fan of GFY, I was in heaven that Joey hadn't really been attracted to anyone before Owen and that he wasn't sure if any of the labels really applied to him.

I really liked Joey's parents and the whole mystery surrounding Joey being a shifter. It was really intriguing. I hated Dr. Mirza though, he was pure evil, not only for what he subjected Joey to in the past, but what he pretended to do with him and other shifters.

I think I can safely say this is my favorite of the series so far. It was different, yet still connected somewhat to the previous books, but giving us a broader spectrum into this world. It was interesting, riveting and intriguing, very fast-paced and well-written and I am already looking forward to more books in the series.

‘Shifter U’ has become one of my favorite series, set in a contemporary world where shifters are not known to humans and “band together” at certain universities and places where they feel comfortable. Cody University in Wyoming is one of them, and this third story is as funny as the first two, at least initially. But its theme is also more serious – so that in the second half, the suspense just mounts and mounts as the main character discovers the secret behind his mysterious “illness”. With a relationship between two students, mystery and secrets, a serious threat, yet a wonderful sense of humor where appropriate, this turned out to be a very entertaining story.

I really like this series, set in a university where shifters and humans coexist. However, this book just didn't do it for me. I thought that the overall plot of figuring out how Yusuf (Joey) could be a shifter and not know it for his whole life was done fairly well. All the investigative work, including hacking and searching for records, was captivating. However, the relationship suffered a bit. Also, I didn't feel like it added much to the overall series, and I would like to have more world-building. I want to see more of of the other shifters and previous characters. But maybe that's just me.

My favourite one of the series with lots of focus on family and relationships before we have a twist that I only saw coming a page away and a very action packed ending!

Joey is leaving home for the first time and going to college. A declaration of independence for him, Joey is embracing being on his own and making his own decisions after a long childhood of being sick and isolated. Joey is still sick but wants to live despite it. The onyl problem is since this is his first time being out since he was five.....Joey sucks at figuring out how to do this. When his insomnia has him meeting the night clerk in his residence, Owen, they start up a nightly chess game and Joey finds himself with his first friend. But when the full moon comes and Joey turns into a lion suddenly his whole world changes.

Joey has a lot of firsts, but he isn't coming across as the naive innocent virgin which was nice. He is socially awkward and a little uncertain of things, but he has the wherewithal to reach for what he wants, after all that's how he got to college. The biggest gurdle for him in this is figuring out how to be independent but still with people. Going to college he assumed this was all about doing things on his own, so when everything starts changing he doesn't want to have to rely on someone else and he definitely doesn't want his life being dictated by someone else. His stress of the situation gets compounded by wondering about the lies his parents have told. Through all of this Joey has in mind that he wants to be friends with Owen and make things work, so even when there are pitfalls he still works to figure out how to say what was wrong and what can be changed. It worked out very well.

Owen is sweet and very caring, though sometimes that is what drives Joey away. The two click very quickly and it is super cute to see all the signals that Owen is sending Joey's way when Joey has no idea. Owen is very aware that Joey may not be gay, may not be into him, and may need some space with the shifter stuff, but he is determined to be a good friend if nothing else. There is no pressure from Owen but at the same time he is gently open to being there for Joey, which makes him an amazing rock for this story.

The whole mystery of Joey's parents takes up most of the story. There is the solid fact that Joey has to have a shifter as a parent, making it either a lied about adoption or a lied about life situation. But when you learn how much Joey's parents have sacrificed for him it is hard to imagine either, so I spent a lot of the book guessing and trying to figure out what had happened. There are little leads in each direction leaving you guessing, and when it all comes to a head it is with a real bang that has you hoping everyone makes it out. The best part was the action really served as a vehicle to bring the emotion to a head and brought about a great closing to the story. Excellent book!

*sigh*

I was a bit apprehensive about starting this one, when it didn't seem to have any direct relation to the previous 2, that I loved so much. There had been no introduction to either of the MC's in the previous books, like there was in Books 1-2, so I was worried that I wouldn't connect as well to these new characters or their situations.

I needn't have worried.

First off, Yusef/Joey is scarily - and I mean, freakily - ME! I was that kid who was sick a long time, in and out of hospital, always something going wrong, afraid to plan ahead, never thinking too hard about the future. All of that was me. So, right from page 1, I got it. I had been Joey/Yusef at one point, and I knew all the thoughts, the doubts, the feelings, the worries, the inexperience. I had been there, but...even if I hadn't...it was all there. Everything was written so perfectly that there was no doubt that the author did their research or pulled on some personal experience. Because it was everything I could have ever put into words or thoughts, about what it's like to be that sick kid who missed out on being a kid, a teenager, an adult, and all the experiences that come with that.

But, I also instantly fell in love with Owen. The chemistry between them...the slow burn...the slow build of trust...the friendship...the teenage mooning over each other...and even the beautiful way they came to understand each other and argued, was all perfection.

Even more, I loved the slow way that Yusef/Joey came to learn about himself. He had to relearn who he was, what he wanted, how he felt, and had to work so hard to figure out where his place in this world was, that he was so unfamiliar with. Add on the strangeness of his discoveries and the mental battering was immense. I loved the way that was explored, so fully and yet with moments of relief, and how much Owen helped him deal with that.

I loved Yusef/Joey's parents, especially his mother. I loved seeing even a tiny bit of Buddy, who I've been intrigued by since book 1. I'm looking forward to reading his story, next. I also want to see some more of David, and maybe some more of Benedict Snow - and maybe some of them together ;) I need a grumpy cop-type shifter to get together with the brash and pushy hacker/journalist that is David. PLEASE!

And...yup. I thought the receipts from Book 1 were bad enough, then came...sticky notes. Good god. This series is determined to make me a sobbing wreck.

~

I'm not sure how to review this book. I can't find any information that indicates the author identifies as being disabled themself, it seems a little ableist.
It's a cute story, well written characters, good plot, and it captures the very real frustration of spending your entire life and every penny on trying to find the cause of a chronic illness. BUT

The third book in J Leigh Bailey’s *Buddy’s Cafe* series, *The Night Owl and the Insomniac*, follows Yusuf, a relatively new student at Cody College. Oh, and a lion shifter. Except Yusuf has no idea he is a shifter and has lived his life assuming he is chronically ill. So when he suddenly shifts into his lion form at the full moon he is more than happy to lean on his friend, the very helpful and very handsome Owen, a horned owl shifter who also attends Cody College. We follow Yusuf and Owen as they try to unravel the mystery of how Yusuf had no idea he was a shifter and uncover some family secrets, discover nefarious schemes and, of course, fall in love along the way.

Much like the previous books in the series, *The Night Owl and the Insomniac* is a low-angst, low-stress book with two sweet shifter characters. The pacing is steady and while the attraction between the characters is instant they take their time labelling their relationship. I quite liked how protective Owen was of his new friend and crush, and Yusuf’s absolute confusion and brave attempt to make the best of this strange new reality he finds himself in was very believable. I also really enjoyed the way he thought about his family and the tender relationship they shared. A great book for fans of lesser-known shifter stories with a splash of action, humour and some sweet and sexy encounters. I thank the author for the ARC and give this 4 stars!

It was a gripping paranormal book with a nice touch of mystery and romance. Charming characters and the spark of the first love made it a lovely read.

Joey has being ill all of his life. The odd disease has deprive him of a lot of experiences, but he decided to take a chance and live his life the way he want it. As he started college, he keeps bother by Insomnia. In one of his sleepless nights, he meets Owen who work a night shift. They start to spend the nights in the company of each other. While feelings start to develop, Joey's unexpected shift into a lion, opens a web of secrets and lies.

I loved the book. It got my attention from the beginning, with the way Joey described his illness. It was very easy to get in touch with his emotions. The plot was very interesting. I liked the way the paranormal elements were explain to fit a mostly contemporary setting. I also like the mystery, although I felt it was underwhelming how it was solved. The romance might not be the biggest focus of the storyline, but it was very sweet to see Joey and Owen to start developing their relationship. Their time together was what I liked the most about the book.

It was a entertaining book, not overly romantic but enjoyable. I think any reader who likes paranormal books, particularly unusual shifters, could like it.

I did like this story, even though it wasn't the first. Owen and Joey were very cute together and I even enjoyed the plot line. I don't know if I will read the others in this series or not. While I did enjoy the story, the characters did not grab me.

My Review:

OMG, Joey's story is so heartbreaking. Seriously, what he's gone through is just awful. No wonder he needs an escape, so he escapes to go to college in Cody, Wyoming, not having a clue as to what he's in for. Joey doesn't sleep. After years of being chronically ill, he just can't get his body to relax so that's how he meets Owen, who mans the nighttime desk of the dorm. The two strike up a friendship built on nocturnal wanderings and chess.

And then everything in Joey's life goes a little nuts.

I am really enjoying this series, but this story took a totally different turn and I really liked it. I loved all the details and the twists and turns that wound in and around Joey and Owen's budding romance.

It was a fun book and from the moment I started reading it, I didn't put it down. There's quite a bit of suspense to all these books and I liked it a lot. Both characters were likable guys and I loved how Joey's character arc developed and grew.

I definitely recommend this one and the entire Shifter U series. They're simply fun, entertaining stories and any one can be read as a standalone, but I bet after you start them you will want to read them all.

When ‘Yusuf’ Joey is wandering the halls at night he sees Owen who works the night shift. They start a game of chess. He could never imagine starting a new life at Cody College would change his so completely.
From a young age Joey was always sick and his parents paid a fortune in medical bills.
Living this new life is doing him good minus his new developed insomnia. Then one night he shifts into a massive Asiatic lion... he doesn’t know what happens to him. Owen doesn't seem surprised at all...

His whole life becomes an uncertainty. Who is he and why didn’t his parents tell him?
With Owen on his side, they start an investigation. Nothing seems as it is.

A lovely new adult shifter story I really enjoyed reading. The mystery throughout is well done. The growing love between Joey and Owen was so nice to watch. The subdued possessive side of Joey was somewhat funny. The plot was really well done. I love the whole package of lions, owls, friendship, family secrets, and the bit of angst.
I read it in one sitting because it provided just what I wanted and I had to know the outcome.
In short; a good written somewhat sweet, slightly different shifter story.

This is a book 3 but I haven't read the first two and this one read just fine.
Joey has been sick his entire life and is tired of his parents coddling him and his doctor running painful tests so he goes away to college. He begins having more pain and finding himself roaming the halls at night with insomnia. he meets the night worker Owen and they start playing chess and become fast friends. then Joey shifts and still has a hard time accepting his new life. finding out that his parents have to be keeping secrets to him, Owen and his friends help Joey try to find the truth. Little do they know the trouble they unlock.

This story is very interesting from the beginning. It has so many fantastic characters. It's well-written and page-turning and has several twists and turns. I want to read the first two and am hoping for several more!
If you like a New adult, college kids, unique shifters, twists and turns and a good romance this is for you!

So this was absolutely WONDERFUL!

I've enjoyed the previous two installments of the Shifter U series a lot but if I had to pick a favorite it would be The Night Owl and the Insomniac. Honestly, for personal reasons only since they're all fantastically done.

Sweet, innocent Yusuf and charming Owen are exactly how I like my boys best.

Their meeting, when one night Yusuf slips in a puddle from Owen's overwatered plant, is awkward but Owen's charm wins Yusuf over and they slowly fall into an easy friendship.

With Owen being Yusuf's first actual friend, and while he's trying to figure out what in the hell it means that he's turning into a lion now, everything is still kinda awkward and adorable and I loved every second of their first love fumbling.

I particularly enjoyed the mystery element involving his family. I've totally guessed wrong so many times, ha.

I highly recommend this series you guys!

This is a wonderful story. Joey and Owen are so right for each other. They get to know each other because Joey has insomnia and he wanders the halls of his college dorm. Owen helps Joey find out what causes his health issues. There is so much for them to learn. Any book that can make me laugh and cry out loud is one I would recommend and this one did both.

Enjoyed all the Wyoming bits (wouldn't want to live there, but I do love to visit) and discovering a whole new species of lion (I ponder if these lions are the source of the "king of the jungle" reputation) amongst all the relationship development bits.

It's been a while since I read the first two in this series, but enough came back that I'm ready to read book 4 soon, especially since this one sets up the MCs for that one.

I seriously adore these two. Joey has a messed up past but he’s slowly working through it. Their meet cute was just that - adorably cute. Their whole dynamic was written seamlessly. The story and word building flowed beautifully and we even got a glimpse of past characters to tie this story into the world.

This is such a fun series! If you’re a shifter lover – like me! – you’ve already been enjoying this series. If you’re new… well, I’d say this is as good as any to start with – but maybe go to book one – at least…

In any case, book 2 was my favorite and I LOVED it – this had big shoes to fill and … it didn’t - but it was still real damn good! I loved the whole “I don’t know I’m a shifter” and though the “WTF? How did he not know…” factor was pretty high – the author did a pretty good job explaining.

I thought the romance was a bit weaker here (than in other books in the series), but the personal growth was bigger. The humor was pretty great, and all in all this was a good addition to a great series.

There’s a lot to like about this story. I read the first book in the Shifter U series and I enjoyed it a lot so I jumped at the chance to review this one.

I love shifter stories, and the world the author has built for her characters is intriguing. I found myself wanting to know more about not only Joey and Owen, but also about the other shifters who surround them. There’s a lot of room for more stories here (just saying J. Leigh Bailey) and I hope we get a few more in this series.

It was easy to feel sorry for Joey in the beginning. I almost felt like he pushed his way to college so that he could die the way he wanted to…only the opposite happened and he had a hard time figuring out how to feel about it. Watching him work it out, along with dealing with all the other revelations that are thrown his way made cheering for him second nature.

Owen is sweet and supportive without being overbearing and he’s the kind of person I wish were easier to find in life. He does his best to help Joey find himself and gives him the space he needs to learn about his new life….and the secrets of his old one.

The premise of this story is intriguing and the twists and turns along the way kept me hooked enough to sit down and read it all in one go! It was a little predictable, but it didn’t really matter because even if I knew where it was going, I couldn’t wait to see how it got there.

It’s a pretty fluffy story, but it had enough angst to keep an angst-lover like me happy and you just can’t beat the happily ever after I demand in my stories.

All in all, it’s a story I can recommend that will leave you smiling…and waiting for more!
