Nails sharpened, fists clenched, eyes shooting dagger beams, minds whirling! Let the cat fight between so called best friends begin!
This book is about two women’s friendship. One of them is everything you’d dreamed of as the other one has nothing to lose!
Gracie is the lucky cow: she has everything other women truly envy: charming husband: check! Adorable child: check again! A stylish, meticulously decorated house: check! A successful career: Check! A gigolo has best cumulative assets three Chrises have ( Hemsworth, Pine and Evans) : Sorry! She failed but she still seems like she has it all! ( ha ha ha: cold bitch laugh effect)
Anyways, we’re also introduced to Juliet who has anything to hold on: a struggling single parent with no money no man more cry and no future hopes!
How did these polar opposites draw into each other to form a true friendship?
Of course they don’t form a real friendship when both of the parties have disturbing qualities! (Crazy bitch alert!)
There are too many mind spinning and triggering subjects in their story ( in fact those subjects are enough for more than five books) including cheating, stalking, obsession, manipulation, murder mystery, more obsession, more violent tendencies!
This is such a great popcorn book- you just consume fast, you don’t get enough nutrition and your mouth filled in grease at the end, but you don’t care: once you start you don’t want to stop because you’re still having fun!
There are so many batshit craziness you’ll witness during your reading journey and you keep repeating : “ Oh no! Even she cannot go that far! What? Did she do that! Holly hell! “
Overall: I didn’t adore this book! And I didn’t like both of the characters! I like mentally disturbed characters but these women were way too much out of control for my crazy tolerance level!
But it was quick, entertaining read with foreseeable twists! It’s not one of my best , mouth agape, jaw dropping, heart throbbing thriller reads but it is still okay and I didn’t get bored. I found myself nervously giggling at several times.
I still want to read more works of the author. Special thanks to NetGalley and Bookoture for sharing this arc copy with me in exchange my honest thoughts.
This was slow to start, but once it got going I couldn't put it down. The final twist was unexpected and original. Gracie and Juliet are both well developed characters that I grew to like at times, and utterly despise at other times. The plot takes on a twisted journey through the minds of two women that aren't as different as they seem. Both have dreams that may never come true. Desperation and decption are the driving forces that motivate these women to take risks that could be deadly. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for my copy.
This is a very slow moving psychological thriller. The first part of the book I found to be very boring and hard to follow. I am not a big fan of slow moving thrillers, so the fact this is a very slow moving I think may it boring for me. I did not find the twist very good. I ending up not caring about the characters and the storylines. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Harper) or author (Sam Hepburn) via NetGalley, so I can give honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.
Her Perfect Life was an intriguing read, following the “friendship” of two very different women, one who seemingly has everything, one who seemingly has nothing. As such it was a clever, involving character drama with a psychological thriller twist as motivations and truths start to emerge.
To be honest it was the friendship angle that interested me most – as a reader of many psychological thrillers there are not many surprises – but Sam Hepburn has written a multi-layered and compelling portrait of two different women who come together, a toxic manipulative friendship develops, seeing it as we do from both points of view makes it endlessly fascinating.
Well written, you get sucked into the tale very easily, Sam Hepburn throws plenty of intrigue and twists into the tale, as it unfolds it gets ever more addictive – towards the end of the book I could barely put it down even though it was a slow burner it was highly involving.
Overall a really good addition to this popular genre and one that as a reader you can take many different things from and a well constructed plot that manages not to be utterly obvious – as such I would definitely recommend it.
Gracie has it all n life. Great husband, great family. But there is something that messes this all up.
The friendship part within the story was pleasant to read, the emotional pull and loyalties even when tragedy strikes.
I've recently read a book very similar based around this subject matter.
The thriller side of things I personally found predictable.
I think the author wrote a deserving story, and I'm aware there's nothing new under the sun, but it lacked in places as it wasn't unique from others in this field .
Gracie Dwyer lives a perfect life, handsome husband, beautiful daughter, career as a cook on tv and adoring friends
Juliet is a penniless single mum, living in a squalid flat, has no job and a bully of a ex who is doing everything in his power to make her life a living hell.
So what draws these two completely different women together to forge a unlikely friendship. In this twisted tale of lies and betrayal will either of these women be alive at the conclusion.
The story is told from the perspectives of Gracie and Juliet both of whom I found very unlikable for completely different reasons.Throughout the book there are extracts from a diary written in the past by a character called Pauline Bryce. These entries add mystery and intregue to the story, who is she and how does she fit into events that are happening in the present?.
It's not a fast paced story but there are plenty of twists, mystery and intregue to keep the reader hooked and turning the pages including a totally unexpected twist at the end.I love the breaking glass effect on the cover of this book and I thoroughly enjoyed this twisted mystery.
Many thanks to Harper Collins UK for a arc of this book via netgalley in exchange for a honest review
I enjoyed this pretty much all the way! I would give certain parts around 3.5 stars, solely because at time it was all a little too obvious.
Cracie has mastered a perfect life for herself: TV shows, popularity, a smart husband and a perfect baby that has come in the package with a new family life. What more to wish for? Abut like any perfect picture, Gracie's life has its dark spots. Matt seems like a perfect husband, yet Gracie feels at times she his second best, a comfort choice her went for after he was left a widower with a baby. Work is going well, yet who knows how will it all pan out? Popularity and shiny contracts come with newspaper articles to worry about and a stalker to keep Gracie looking over her shoulder.
Is she really that sweet and nice with her perfect life? Just ask Juliet, who had it all falling apart: broken marriage, drinking problem, scruffy apartment and constant struggle to make the ends meet...
An unlikely friendship? There's a chance. Is there more to come out of this union?
I surprisingly sympathized Juliet. She is falling to pieces, yet she "what you see is what you get". Gracie in turn is "too good to be true".
The plot is solid enough, though some lines are a bit too made up and less believable, though it didn't spoil the reading.
Gracie Dwyer has a successful career, a handsome husband and a beautiful little girl. She has her own business and a cooking programme on tv. Gracie is recognised wherever she goes. Then single mum Juliet and her daughter, Freya, enter Gracie's life. Juliet is the exact opposite of from Gracie. But the bond is there.
This is a very well written debut novel. There is plenty of twists to keep you turning the pages.i really enjoyed this book full of jealousy and deception. Another new author to add to my growing list.
I would like to thank NetGalley, HarperCollins UK, HarperFiction and the author Sam Hepburn for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Her Perfect Life had many of the ingredients I look for in a good, solid psychological thriller but there was something missing for me, maybe some tension, or that feeling of confusion and disbelief was lacking, I’m not exactly sure. Sometimes I think it’s just really difficult for authors to capture that special something that makes a psychological thriller a real star.
Let’s start with what worked for me. I liked the alternating point of views used, we hear from both Gracie and Juliet as they start an awkward friendship. There are also random diary entries from a young woman named Pauline and I enjoyed trying to figure out who she was and how she fit into the story. The big twist in the end was decent but not totally shocking and that’s always a disappointment.
Several things bothered me about this one, but one of my biggest issues was that there were far too many loose ends left hanging and things that just didn’t fully make sense. There was something missing in the writing style as well, there was no easy flow, no sense of being addicted to the read that kept me flipping the pages at a fast pace. Speaking of pacing, things just felt disjointed, at times things moved very fast and at others it felt super slow moving, I would’ve liked the author to pick one or the other.
Overall it was an ok read, nothing special and I think as soon as I finish writing this review I’ll forget most of the characters names. I’m not upset that I powered through and finished so I suppose I’m satisfied on some level, but I was definitely left wanting more.
This book was just OK for most of it, but the end was very interesting! It centers on Gracie and Juliet, 2 women from different sides of the tracks who become friends through their young daughters. The chapters alternate between both women, as well as diary entries from an unknown person. Juliet is insanely jealous of Gracie and believes she has a perfect life- the reader knows she has an end goal but aren't told exactly what it is. Gracie's life isn't quite as perfect as it seems, and the book gives you 2 unreliable narrators as you navigate through the story.
The book was a little long and got somewhat repetitive- Juliet's inner monologue and constant investigation got a little old after a while and could have been crisped up. You also have to suspend your disbelief that Gracie wouldn't have security cameras, or even a Ring doorbell, to know if Juliet entered her house unexpectedly.
That being said, I figured out a couple of the twists early in the book, but still enjoyed validating my assessments as the story unfolded. There were some details dropped throughout the book that tied back to the story later, and I always like to see that. There were some additional surprises at the end, and I feel like the end made the whole book for me.
Overall decent read with a really good ending. I read this as an ARC and wonder if it will be crisped up a bit before release. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
An entertaining slow burn. Gracie appears to have the perfect life. A doting husband, an adorable daughter, a gorgeous home, an amazing job. Juliet’s Life is messy. Her husband is living in a different country with his pregnant girlfriend, her daughter is frightened of her own shadow, her flat is a dump, her career has never got off the ground. But as much as Juliet despises Gracie for her perfect life she still wants to very much be part of it. The story bounces back-and-forth between the perspectives of Gracie and that of Juliet. And there is a lot going on here: adultery, stalkers, infertility, abuse. Neither of these women were tremendously likable, but I sure did want to find out what was going on. My only tiny Kniggle with the story is some parts went on a little too long and I think that’s because there was so much going on. The book really was kind of like a maze. You’d be going along thinking you knew where it was headed and then you’d run into a dead end and have to redirect. A wild ride filled with plenty of twists and untrustworthy characters.

*** Big thank you to for my gifted copy of this book. All opinions are my own. ***
While I did enjoy this story, I certainly didn’t think it was a “twisty psychological thriller”. I found this book to be more of a slow burn drama that has a good “gotcha” ending. I thank Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I thought this book was excellent. I really enjoyed the story and I liked that it started off really well and not a book you had to read pages to get into it. The characters were great and I liked Juliet the best as she was trying to make a better life for herself and her daughter and also I did actually like the character Gracie (until the end) and I was really interested in both of them. The ending was brilliant. I thought it was a perfect ending. The only downside I would say is that some of the story really confused me and I didn’t understand what was going on but the majority of the book was brilliant. I look forward to reading more books from the author.
The synopsis of this novel was appealing and having never read anything by Sam Hepburn before, I wasn't sure what to expect. What I received was a riveting story that quickly drew me into the contrasting lives of the main characters, both equally unlikable for differing reasons. The story was woven seamlessly despite having a somewhat complicated plot. The surprise ending I didn't see coming at all. I look forward to more of Sam Hepburn's work.
Gracie has the perfect life ... a terrific husband, a well-loved child, a beautiful home overlooking the water.
Juliet should have had the same life. Instead, she's living in a run-down apartment with her 5-year-old daughter .. the daughter her ex-husband is trying to take away.
When Gracie moves a short distance away, Juliet seizes an opportunity to get close to Her. After all, if things go wrong in Gracie's life, wouldn't she want her new friend close? Because no one’s life is really that perfect—and sometimes all it takes is a little push to expose the darkest of secrets…
The story line is a good one ... the suspense is low key. There are twists and turns, but nothing major and the conclusion was a bit muddled. This was just an okay read for me.
I did like this book.... but it didn't really grip me. It had a lot of twists, but the full book just didn't really capture my attention. It took me longer to finish this one and more effort to finish it than others have.
This book will be really good to some people, it just wasn't one for me. Juliet's character annoyed me the whole way through and the story never really seemed to have the tension that thrillers have when a big conclusion is coming.
I really enjoyed this story of two very different women, forming a so-called ‘friendship’ but with hidden intentions lurking beneath the ‘friendly’ facade!
Grace is a successful celebrity cook with an amazing house and a lovely family. But there are parts of Grace’s life away from the cameras which are less perfect…
Juliet, on the other hand, is almost the exact opposite of Grace- she is down on her luck, struggling as a single parent to daughter Freya, and incredibly jealous of Grace’s seemingly perfect life.
The story follows the two women as they come together whilst Juliet tries to worm her way into Grace’s life, with an ever-present sense of danger lurking beneath the friendship because we know, unlike the unsuspecting Grace, that Juliet is not all that she seems – but is Grace hiding some secrets too? We see sections told from either Grace’s or Juliet’s perspective and a mystery third narrator which adds additional intrigue. I wanted to know how this person connected to the story and who they might be – I did guess that and was sort of correct, but
Her Perfect Life explores female friendship, jealousy, and toxic relationships. It’s a fairly slow burner of a novel as the author slowly reveals more about both characters. Although it’s classed as a psychological thriller I’d say it’s less of a thriller and more of an intriguing mystery that draws you in and keeps you eagerly reading until the final – satisfying – end!
Many thanks to the publisher, HarperCollins, for providing a copy of this book on which I chose to write an honest review
How far would you go to create the perfect life? Gracie Dwyer has it all: the handsome husband, the adorable child, the beautiful home and the glittering career. The perfect life. Her new friend Juliet doesn't exactly fit in. She's a down-on-her-luck single parent with no money and not much hope. So just what is it that draws Gracie and Juliet together? And when the cracks start to appear in Gracie's perfect life, can both of them survive?
The plot of this book sounded really interesting to me, as I love a good psychological thriller but it just kind of fell flat. The book alternates between Gracie and Juliet's perspectives, although there are more chapters from Gracie's perspective. At the beginning of the book I was very interested and eager to learn more about Gracie behind her "perfect" exterior, but I gradually started to lose interest. I did like the author's writing and found that she wrote about each character very well, as the farther along in the book we get, the more Juliet's behavior isn't the greatest. And the author did a good job at describing and writing about what starts to become an awkward relationship between these two women. As we get farther into the book, we also start to see that Gracie's life really isn't perfect, with her lack of trust towards her husband and the other events that start to cause her a significant amount of stress. It was a good psychological thriller, but I just never became that invested in the characters or the story.
Thanks to the publishers for sending me an advanced review copy of this book.
3 Coveting What You Don't Have Stars * * * Spoiler Free-A Quick Review One of the first books/movies I remember that used the wish to be someone else was Single White Female. One Scary Book and a really strong translation to film. In this book, we have another type of wishing...
When Juliet looks at Grace, she sees everything that is perfect in Grace's life. Grace has a "Happy Marriage, Cute Kid, Money Galore, and even a spare guy to play with that looks like he should be in the movies.
Contrast Juliet's life at this moment... Failed PR gig, single mom, without any means of support...and crossing over that invisible line leading her to become desperate and losing hold of how to function and figure things out.
The only constant running in Juliet's mind is how perfect Grace's life is...and wouldn't by being close to Grace...that perfection would rub off on her...
That is the premise. Lots of drama, evil-doing, unattractive behavior by all.
The characters in this book just didnt do it for me Was a slow burn and hard to get i too. A few twists made it readable to the end but can't say that I totally enjoyed this one. Hopr others find it more of a thriller than I thought it was.
Thanks to the Author, the publisher and NetGalley for an early release of this book.
DNF at 45%, 3 hours left to read. Gracie has built an empire for herself. Cook books, cafe, tv show. After returning to her London suburb award winning house, her husband confesses a drunken one night stand on their house. After serious consideration, they decide to sell the house and move closer to both their jobs. Juliet can't keep it together. Smoking and drinking, freelance PR jobs are not paying the bills. Her daughter, Freya, simply goes along. Gracie and Juliet meet- for the second time. When Juliet was trying to get work after leaving her abusive husband, she pitched ideas to Gracie at a conference. Gracie chose a different firm. Juliet wants revenge. So long. Subplots all over the place. Just didn't hold my interest.
2.5 stars Interesting premise but bad execution: some mystery but hardly any tension, a seemingly promising end which ended up being a let down. Could’ve been way better.
Gracie Dwyer has the perfect life - a celebrity chef, a beautiful home, a successful husband and a gorgeous daughter. At least that's what Juliet thinks. Juliet is a single mother, struggling to make ends meet and bitterly separated from her husband. Juliet becomes friends with Gracie, inveigling her way into Gracie's home and life, bitter about Gracie's success, she's determined to uncover any deep, dark secrets that Gracie may be harbouring. Ultimately, this is Juliet's downfall as the book concludes with a dramatic revelation. A compelling read.
Does anyone ever truly have the perfect life? It would seem that Gracie Dwyer has her life put together. She is married, has a successful career, and a darling little girl. But what appears on the outside may not always look the same from inside. Whil;e Gracie seems to have it all, Juliet is the complete opposite. Her career never really took off, she drinks and smokes too much, and her husband seems to be off in another country with a new much younger woman leaving Juliet to care for their young daughter. Two women who couldn;t be any more different than night and die find their way to each other, but is it a friendship match made in heaven or something much more sinister?
Her Perfect Life is one well written plot meant to pull you right in with its slow burn approach as it builds you up. Even though it is a slow burn for about half the book, the mystery really keeps you flipping the pages wondering what route the story will take you on. There is a lot of intrigue and a character named Pauline thrown in the mix that really keeps you guessing as to her roll in the story. Throw in a crazy stalker and you have now added a new level of crazy to the plot.
Can I say I liked any of the characters? I am kind of on the fence about that. From the outside Gracie seems like the newest Martha Stewart, put together and putting on a show, but I never really quite warmed up to her. Juliet is definitely more sympathetic in her own way. I mean who wouldn’t feel bad for a sort of single mother barely able to make ends meet while trying to take care of her child? All I know is I do enjoy unreliable narrators and Sam Hepburn excelled on that front.
If you enjoy a slow burn psychological thriller that pulls you right in, has twists and a hint of craziness, then you will definitely want to pick up Sam Hepburn’s newest release, Her Perfect Life.
This was an incredibly slow paced story of two women: One with the seemingly perfect life and one that wants to be her. Nothing ever really grabbed me. I attribute that to the thin characterization. The characters had so little depth, it made their relationships and dynamics with one another confusing at times. The writing was fine, but not great. It doesn't really work as a psychological thriller despite the stalker angle. It doesn't really work as a domestic thriller either despite it having some of the basic troupes of the genre. I think it would fall more into the category of chick lit. Overall, it wasn't something I particularly enjoyed and not an author I would want to read again.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Seemingly Gracie has the perfect life. She’s a celebrity cook and successful businesswoman. She lives in a designer house, has a handsome husband and is the mother of a beautiful little girl. But Gracie’s “perfect” life is starting to unravel. Juliette definitely has anything but the perfect life. She has money problems, is a little bit too fond of a drink and is struggling to bring up her daughter alone following a messy relationship.
The unfolding events are recounted from the points of view of Gracie and Juliette and an unnamed third narrator’s diaries. I thought the author did a good job of creating distinctive voices for Gracie and Juliette and revealing different aspects of their characters as the book progressed. Gradually, the connections between Gracie, Juliette and the unnamed diarist are revealed resulting in a satisfyingly clever twist at the end (which I guessed part of but not all).
I received an advance review copy courtesy of NetGalley and publishers, Harper Collins, in return for an honest review.
First of I want to say a huge thank you to the publisher Bookoutute, the author Sam Hapbune , and to NetGalley for inviting me to join the blog tour for this book as well as letting me read and review it.This is the first time I read anything by this author and after reading this I can't wait to see what more she comes up with. Even though I've read other books that have this same trope, it never gets old at least to me, because each author brings something different to the table. And this author did just did just that, right from the start there was something about her main character that made you want to trust her but at the same time you didn't. Which is why I liked her a lot. As for this story it has everything in it that made it a good thriller to read as well as what I like in ones that was some what twisted and they are : heating, stalking, obsession, manipulation, murder mystery, obsession and violent tendencies, as well as secrets that need to be kept. With that said I'll leave it at that and with a question and that is what more can you want in a book that will keep you on the edge of your set.
