Il fumo
La zolfara, miraggio di facile arricchimento, ha segnato la vita del mite Don Mattia. Il suo socio disonesto Dima Chiarenza, ora divenuto usuraio, gliela mandò in malora e, con essa, la moglie e il figlio; e adesso, dopo tanti anni, minaccia anche la sua amatissima terra. "Il Fumo" è la dolentissima storia della vendetta peggiore che si possa mettere in tanto furente quanto priva di piacere. Una sorta di olocausto totale, dove il protagonista sacrifica ciò che di più caro gli resta al mondo, pur di non sopportare oltre i soprusi di un destino beffardo. Al grido «distruzione! Distruzione! Né io né lui! Brucino!», con la morte nel cuore e un «acuto rimorso» che lo tormenta, dà l’addio a quel suo paradiso che diventerà ben presto inferno. Essendo proprio lui a dannarlo. Dannandosi.

Un bellissimo cortoromanzo!

Il fumo, quello delle solfatare, che uccide uomini e divora campi dedicati all’agricoltura. Il fumo è anche avidità, potere, denaro sotto forma di povere gialla, ma anche vendetta, quella di un uomo disperato che pur di non vedere il suo “aguzzino” rubargli il “panorama” preferisce vendere quello che gli resta a una società mineraria e portare alla rovina tutto quello che lo circonda.
