The Turn #2

The King of May

Rate this book
To My Suffering Angels,

How strong you are, how resolute and brave, wading in the mire of darkness, and how very far you've come.

We so despise the darkness because we're taught to look away from it. We lost the ability to comprehend darkness, to face the darkness in ourselves.

The turn has forced us to face it. And some could not survive. But you who remain are strong enough to take the final step toward true happiness.

The truth lies deep beneath your flesh, where there is no light... Let me pull it back and show you.

Come then, my winged little things. Let me show you what you are, that we may revel in our untainted truths as we dance in the light of the untainted sun.

Until that day, I remain most affectionately yours,

About the author

I was born on May 24th, 1989, and raised on Long Island, where I attended a small town public education. My vocational path has taken me down many roads, from retail, to used car sales, to high school security, working in a network or group homes to working as a nighttime patient sitter at my local hospital.

I’m a homebody at heart, though I possess this strange fondness for city life and, like the great H.P. Lovecraft, I have an especially painful attraction to Manhattan (a place which I have lovingly destroyed in several of my stories).

I love people, though I often find I keep them at arm’s length. I love watching people, ruminating on their behavior and building little stories out of my predictions as to what each man or woman I see is going to do next. Most especially, I like to imagine them in different settings, extraordinary settings, and ponder the discoveries of such extreme displacement.

I’ve always believed that chaos is the muse of creation, and a good story is often driven by the choices made in the wake of madness.

The things we do in hope

After the end of the previous book, readers are fully justified in asking, "What's next? What happens now?" After all, Matthew Tysz promised us a new world order.

I'm here to say that not only does he deliver, but he does so with gusto.

Cattleprod, Ashley, Svholar and comoany are back and they're all pulled in similar directions. Most notably, the pursuit of the gods, the King of May chief among them, is a defining story thread that brings our characters together, only tonpull them apart at the end. And boy howdy, does that last bit pull them apart.

Complicating this is the fact that we know certain characters are on a bad path, but the threat the King presents is so much so that all other lines of morality are blurred. After all, justice is justice no matter how it comes about, right?

Or is Tysz asking us to consider that some things are heinous, even in the pursuit of it?

Me? I'm leaning to the latter. You might not, and therein lies the beauty of this book.

Brava, Mr. Tysz. Brava.

Devoured this one

Excellent book two...not at all disappointed! Well crafted and fast paced ...didn't put it down. Parting from these characters is gonna hurt...

Immediately after finishing the first book, I started The King of May. This is book two in the series and it starts immediately after the events of the first novel.

This one was easier to follow than the first. Except with more characters. But I already know who they are so I didn't mind. Cattleprod, our resident villain is up against a new and equally cruel but arguably more powerful, The King of May. Ashley and Scholar pretty much still dominates the whole thing, thank goodness. But now they feel more like a team, and this sounds cheesy but, they complete each other. I love them, especially Scholar.

I'm not sure what the author is trying to do, but somehow it became something like a mythological novel. Gods are added to the already complicated theme of the novel. Which is still fine, if you ask me. Curiosity got the better of me so I finished it as quickly as I could. And already have the third installment on my device.

This book is set in a post apocalyptic world. Otherworldly humanlike beings obtain powers after the death of Oak to become gods. The gods and humans fight for power on who will rule the world. The King of May is a formidable threat, a hideous looking god and a graceful dancer too (that one surprised me). What will happen when both clash?
