I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review!

This Middle-Grade fantasy really interested me because mystery, dragons (I love dragons!) and a girl by the name of Pattern who was training to be a servant but then gets called away from the training academy to serve a woman in a land that holds many secrets, some darker than Pattern originally thought. Sadly, the story was personally not for me as I struggled with character connection and was confused about the world-building. It made references to Wales but the kingdom was also described as a brand new land which wasn't Wales. The writing style at times, failed to hold my interest. Overall, I was left feeling disappointed and will not be continuing on with the series.

La última duquesa nos cuenta la historia de Pattern, es una chica de nada más trece años que destaca entre las estudiantes de la prestigiosa academia de servicio doméstico. Un día le ofrecen la oportunidad de trabajar como la primera doncella de la gran duquesa de Elfinburgo, ya que se ha quedado huérfana. La joven duquesa tiene un año más que Pattern, vive en un misterioso y oscuro lugar donde ella cree que su servicio son espías y que su tío está tramando algo para quedarse con el trono... todo el castillo piensa que la Duquesa está un poco paranoica y nadie cree en ella. Poco a poco y a pesar de las diferencias, Patter y la duquesa forjan una bonita amistad donde los secretos más oscuros del castillo parecen salir a la luz y desde ese momento deben de luchar por su supervivencia. Así que Pattern deberá no solo de cuidar de la duquesa sino también investigar y encontrar los peligros que acechan en cada rincón con el fin de salvar sus vidas.

Para comenzar diré que no esperaba encontrarme la historia que me he encontrado en este libro, ya que a pesar de lo finito que es, me ha sorprendido y su trama va mucho más de lo que aparenta, no imaginaba encontrarme con dragones ni ciertos elementos, y eso me ha maravillado. Lo que más me ha gustado del libro es la forma en la que está escrita, tiene un lenguaje muy sencillo, ligero y divertido, que da la sensación estar leyendo un cuento antes de ir a dormir, por lo que sería perfecto para aquellas niñas/os entre 9 – 12 años. Otra cosa que me ha gustado es que la pluma de Laura es bastante directa y no se anda por las ramas, porque agradezco que a ser un libro tan finito sea fiel a la trama y nos cuente la historia desde que Pattern llega a ese castillo, sí es cierto que no sabemos demasiado sobre el pasado de estos personajes principales, es decir, te informa ciertas cosas que son de alguna manera “importante” pero que lo dejan en un tercer plano completamente, así que las conoceremos en el presente.

La trama de esta historia es bastante diferente y peculiar, me ha parecido original la forma que le ha dado la autora a esta historia, me ha gustado llevarme ciertas sorpresas con giros de algunos personajes, es una historia un poco oscura que nada parece lo que realmente es. El libro tiene ilustraciones en blanco y negro en cada capítulo, digamos que son como sombras al igual que la portada del libro, esas ilustraciones me han gustado mucho, aunque son pequeñas y no destacan demasiado las he podido disfrutar, es un acierto ya que puedes ver ciertos acontecimientos importantes de cada capítulo. Digamos que es una historia sencilla, sin grandes sobresaltos, pero lo más importante es que es entretenida y que perfectamente se puede leer en una tarde.

Sobre los personajes... por un lado tenemos a Pattern, ella es una chica de nada más trece años que estudia en una academia de doncellas para en un futuro atender a gente de la alta sociedad. Lamentablemente no conoce a sus padres y cuando quedó huérfana la entregaron a este servicio doméstico para que pudiese estudiar. Pattern me ha parecido una niña muy dulce, que para la edad que tiene es bastante espabilada, sabe hacer de todo: cocinar, coser, limpiar... me ha sorprendido que a su corta edad sea tan respetuosa y madura, es muy inteligente y es un encanto de niña. Y por el otro lado, se encuentra Eleri, ella es la gran duquesa de Elfinburgo... esta niña me ha gustado menos, desde un momento parece ser una niña maleducada, egoísta y caprichosa, siempre ha tenido todo lo que ha querido, pero desde que sus padres fallecieron me da la sensación de que está muy sola, su tío el príncipe no se preocupa por ella y Eleri se pasaba parte de su tiempo en su habitación, hasta que Pattern llega al castillo. Si es cierto que cuando avanza la historia vemos una Eleri valiente y fuerte, pero su personaje por ciertas situaciones y comentarios me ha gustado un poco menos.

Hay muchísimos personajes secundarios, se nota que Laura se ha informado muy bien de cómo funciona un castillo y de quienes trabajan en él, todos estos tienen un papel en esta historia, aunque algunos más importantes que otros, pero podremos conocer a la mayoría de estos. Destacaría el príncipe y tío de Eleri, ya que en esta historia tiene bastante protagonismo junto con Malec que es el “ayuda cámara”.

Esta historia tiene pinceladas de fantasía y me ha encantado que un dragón sea la pieza fundamental para el desarrollo de la historia, me ha parecido bastante curiosa y también me ha maravillado las historias que cuentan los habitantes de Elfinburgo, es original e ingeniosa.

La parte mala que he visto del libro y de ahí mi puntuación... es el final, las cincuenta hojas restantes del libro no me gustaron tanto como al principio, noté como la historia decaía en cierta forma y que la autora giraba la historia para sorprender aún más al lector, pero sinceramente a mí no me gustaba demasiado ese giro que intenta dar, ya que todo el libro (o casi todo) tiene una historia clara y comienza con traiciones, desencuentros, luchas... que para dos niñas de trece años parece bastante surrealista, además una cosa que no me gustó de la historia de su final, es que se resuelve muy fácilmente de lo que realmente es... esperaba que siguiera con esta trama en su segunda parte, pero para mí disgusto es que el final da inicio a otra historia totalmente diferente a esta, ya que leí la sinopsis del segundo libro en inglés y no tiene nada que ver con la gran duquesa y pattern, algo que me decepcionó bastante ya que podría haberle sacado más jugo y partido a la historia. Sinceramente no sé si leeré la segunda parte, porque a pesar de que son otros personajes y otra historia diferente... este libro me ha gustado por ser bastante original y por la manera en la que está narrada, así que a pesar de este punto negativo no descarto darle una oportunidad a su continuación... ya veremos si Siruela decide publicarla para poderla leer.

En resumen, La última duquesa es una historia de fantasía middle grade, que se lee en una tarde, con un lenguaje sencillo y ameno que consigue entretener al lector. Tiene ciertos elementos que me han gustado, como las historias de dragones o los secretos que esconde el castillo y algunos personajes. Lo recomendaría para los niños/as entre 9 - 13 años ya que es perfecto para leer antes de dormir.

Para empezar, Pattern es una chica huérfana que fue encontrada durante el naufragio de un barco (que transportaba migrantes ilegalmente) proveniente de Elfinburgo. Nunca la adoptaron, sin embargo fue acogida en una institución en la que forman a señoritas para ser parte del servicio de la alta socialité y realeza. Y así es como comienza su -seña de comillas con mis deditos- aventura.

A Pattern no la dejan concluir con su formación porque es solicitada para ser la sirviente principal de Su Alteza Real de Elfinburgo, la duquesa Eleri, una chavita de entre unos trece o quince años de edad que lo único que hace es son rabietas y acusar a medio mundo de traición.

Pues Pattern se nos va para Elfinburgo muy ilusionada y dispuesta a aprovechar la oportunidad, pero se topa con su antipática jefa que desconfía de ella. La duquesa cree que su tío la quiere matar para tomar su puesto como Su Altísima 🙄 y en cualquier incidente que llegue a ocurrir, cree que Pattern es aliada y traidora a la Corona. Así que sin miramientos la viene corriendo a los días.

Después de otro incidente en el que supuestamente se deja ver la lealtad de Pattern, la duquesa la perdona y se vuelven íntimas amigas... ¡En tan sólo un párrafo!

En una de sus salidas del castillo, Pattern escucha que hay un dragón por allí robando niños y atacando comunidades. Entonces entiende que por esa razón, sus padres salieron del país de manera ilegal; está 100% segura de que sus padres huían del dragón. Eleri le confirma que la leyenda dice que cuando el gran dragón ataca, una princesa debe otorgársele como ofrenda para saciar su sangre. ¡Así que Eleri descubre el compló! Su tío está inventando historias del dragón para darla como sacrificio y así quedarse a cargo del reino.

Al parecer ése es el plot. Y yo, mis queridas personitas, no planeo averiguar cómo termina.
Mis razones acá:

1. El worlbuilding es terrible. ELFINNOSÉQUÉCOSA existe en nuestro universo. Es como un Genovia que en lugar de peras, produce porcelana. Pero lo peor es que de la nada hay dragones, cosas raras y no se da mucho detalle sobre otras cosas que lo hagan parecer REAL.

2. Sus personajes tampoco son creíbles. Todas sus descripciones tanto de personalidad como de acciones, se mencionan pero no se muestran. En ningún momento pude conectar con la protagonista.

3. No veo consistencia. No sé cómo describirlo, pero está ligado a los puntos anteriores. Por ejemplo, con otros libros que hablan de un adolescente sociópata, no esperaba que hubieran unos seres sobrenaturales que asesinaran a los humanos. Y sin embargo, aunque yo no esperaba eso, los hizo taaaan creíbles que no tuve ningún problema. Es más, me emocioné. En este caso, todo me parece irreal, que está ahí sólo porque sí y sin tener una razón.

Tengo cosas más emocionantes por leer, así que yo abandono esto.

This was a super cute story, and one I think fans of Katherine Woodfine and Holly Webb will enjoy. Very character driven with vivid, old worldly descriptions, The Last Duchess was a lovely book with which to while away an afternoon.

Pattern’s ordinary life is turned upside down when she suddenly finds herself shipped away from London, back to the country of her birth to serve as a ladies maid to a young and orphaned duchess. But the land of Elffinberg holds many myths, and Pattern is about to discover that the palace sits on top of the biggest secret of all.

As the residents of the castle gossip, bribe and attempt to plot their way to the throne, Pattern will need all her skills if she is to help her new mistress survive. But first Pattern must gain the duchess’ trust, or be sent back to London in disgrace…

I couldn't help but enjoy this book. In a merge of history and fantasy, Laura Powell brings to life a small country faced with one very big problem. A dragon. And like in any good fairytale, the only way to appease the dragon is to offer him a princess to snack on…. But the characters in this book are no helpless maidens.

Pattern is hearty heroine. Although mousy on the outside, she is quick thinking and practical, winning her battles through sheer will and kindness. A loyal servant, she is a good balance for the hot tempered duchess, and together the two spark a heart-warming friendship.

However the book is set in a fantastical country, and I was a little sad we didn’t get to visit more of it. Most of the book takes place within the palace, with only short jaunts into the countryside. But the village itself teems with life and I hope in the next book we get to see more of Pattern’s world.

The story is also full of plot twists and I often found myself surprised. Between each page and the next I would suspect one thing only to find myself proven half-right, which left me with just the right amount of smugness, yet still enough intrigue to delight in the truth.

All in all, a sweet MG read. 3 stars!

Fun to read, and nice and light - as an adult I sat back and powered through this in one afternoon through to the evening and it was a real joy to get swept along. The characters were the highlight but the story seemed a bit too light on details in comparison. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone who enjoyed Robin Stevens and Katherine Woodfine books.

Alice, tout juste âgée de 13 ans, obtient un poste de femme de chambre auprès de Son Altesse Royale la grande-duchesse d’Elffinberg. Une chance inespérée pour une domestique aussi jeune et inexpérimentée… Mais elle déchante rapidement en découvrant la réalité du terrain : la grande-duchesse Charlotte est exécrable et paranoïaque au possible – craignant tout le temps pour sa vie – tandis que la cour bruisse de rumeurs sur la folie royale. Malgré tout, Alice reste imperturbable, sert sa nouvelle maîtresse de son mieux et va même jusqu’à mener son enquête sur les ennemis potentiels de Charlotte… Ce qui lui vaut bien vite la reconnaissance royale et une amitié hors du commun.

Ce roman mêle habilement jeunesse, fantastique et enquête. En effet, quelque chose de louche se trame et Alice ne compte pas attendre les bras croisés. Elle décide de mettre son nez dans des affaires qui ne la concernent pas – pour notre plus grand plaisir ! L’intrigue est prenante et tient le lecteur en haleine du début à la fin.

J’ai tout particulièrement aimé le personnage d’Alice. Elle a beau être toute jeune, elle est d’une grande sagesse et très intelligente. Ce qui en fait une enquêtrice hors pair et une alliée de taille. J’ai eu un petit peu plus de mal avec la grande-duchesse au début… Heureusement, elle change peu à peu et dévoile une nature plus agréable.

En conclusion, un premier tome plaisant à lire en compagnie de personnages intéressants. Il est plein de promesses quant à la suite de la série… et j’espère bien retrouver sans tarder Alice pour de nouvelles aventures !

Well this was definitely not what I was expecting! I can definitively say that this book should be considered a fantasy rather than a mystery: as a mystery it was very confusing indeed and I felt it lacked the intricacies of a satisfying mystery book. As a fantasy story however, I thought it was brilliant; the country of Elffinberg is shrouded in myth and legend, and when it’s children begin to vanish in more than mysterious circumstances, it’s up to Pattern and her mistress and new-found friend the Grand Duchess to figure out what happened to them. This book ends in some fast-paced and confusing action, and ends where it all started. I admit I was a little disappointed by the ending and it doesn’t inspire me to read the next one, although I am a little curious...

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It was well written, full of lessons to learn and had a great cast of characters. It was entertaining and was only slow in some parts. The plot was well thought through and the characters were well rounded. This is the perfect book of young children. Tenía tiempo con ganas de tener una lectura ligera pero interesante y sin dudas este libro cumplió con esas expectativas, me encanta la manera en que las pequeñas pueden resolver el problema tan grande que afectaba su nación y como su amistad lo es todo para conseguir ese cometido, las frases al iniciar cada capítulo me parecen muy sensatas y aplicables a nuestras vidas cotidianas pero sin duda una de las que mas me marcó fue una que decía algo como “Donde quiera que te encuentres muy malo debe ser el sitio para no mejorarlo con tu buen que hacer”

Una historia donde la princesa no es rescatada sino que ella enfrenta todos los peligros con su amiga, a mi, en lo personal, me gustó mucho

This was an interesting read, quite quick to finish it and was a fun little read.

Plot was decent, got a little quick sometimes but it alright and kept my interest. It seemed mainly focused on the characters which was alright but I would have liked a bit more description on the areas they were in and the people around them.

The book also has some nice drawing/sketches of silhouettes. There seem to be at least one in every chapter and fit with the book's theme quite nicely.

It was a nice read and a good book for anyone who wants to pass an afternoon or read a simple mystery of deception and secrets. :)

This middle grade mystery is about an orphan girl brought up in a school teaching girls to be ladies's maid. Despite her young age of thirteen, she was selected to travel to the distant land of Elffinberg to serve the equally young duchess.

Elffinberg is described as an exotic European place, reminiscent of Switzerland. Its history stemmed from their founder Prince Elffinn, who subdued the last Welsh dragon and brought it back to his homeland. Our heroine learns that this country has enjoyed hundreds of years of peace, but her encounters with staff and villagers suggests there is something sinister, although nobody wants to discuss it in her presence, as she is not local. The author has created a good mystery. For this I give it 3*.

What I like about this book is how it ties the mystery to Chinese history and basic chemistry. Our heroine might be trained as a ladies' maid, but she is intelligent enough to connect her knowledge to defeat her antagonists.

An enjoyable read. Overall, I rate it 3.5 stars.

Nos sorprenderemos, enojaremos, divertiremos y asustaremos a medida que avanzamos. El final es super inesperado y cierra muy bien la historia de Pattern con Eleri, haciendo pie al segundo volumen (el cual tiene una historia completamente diferente). Si te gustan las historias con dragones, misterios y una linda amistad, te animo a leer La última duquesa."

I really enjoyed this story! The Princess and The Dragon rethought and placed in a marvellous all-but-true country in Europe. Mix this with the wonderful world of upstairs\downstairs politics, secrets, lies, and revenge, it made for a really engaging read.

The ingredients are here for a romp of an adventure fairytale a la Joan Aiken’s Wolves books or Philip Pullman’s Clockwork, Count Karlestein etc. Indeed the lineage is signalled with a few referential names. The culture of Elffinberg combines Welsh and Germanic elements to create a striking and pleasing land. There’s disappeared children, rumours of dragons, and a young ruler at the mercy of court politics - all theoretically as delicious as gingerbread.

But the characters are a bit vague and don’t much come to life and neither is the plot busy enough to pick up the slack. This story would have bounced along well with a few more occurrences and points of mystery to fill out it’s length. As it is, the first two thirds is a little dull without a sense of real progression and the ending feels rushed. The relationships could also have used the time to develop a little more sense of feeling and attachment.

A child who enjoys this kind of aesthetic and style will probably happily consume this book but I don’t think the protagonist Pattern quite makes enough of an impression as a heroine to have many begging for the next instalment of her adventures.
