M. L. Bullock finds the magic again with the ninth book in her Gulf Coast Paranormal series and I’m trying to figure out what she did that brought the series back to full bloom for me. The first part was obvious—there is a whole new kind of threat in this book. A physical monster, referred to as a cryptid, and the fact that there is a physical beast raises the stakes tremendously in this novel and that was obviously a good thing. Also, the mystery was a good one with both a historical aspect and a modern aspect, and there was no point in which I wasn’t engaged in solving it.
However, I think what worked best for me was that the personal interactions sparked in a way that they haven’t in the past couple of books. An old friend of Midas’ has come back to rejoin the team and they obviously are good friends sparking the possibility of major jealousy problems with his girlfriend. The old friend also used to date Pete and one of the new team members is interested in her. This does not turn into a soap-opera-esq romance, but it does add some worthwhile color to the cast and made the whole book work on multiple levels.

Author: M.L. Bullock
As the description states, this is book nine of the Gulf Coast Paranormal Series.
From the beginning, you noticed this book was “different” from the other books in this series.
This book involved a “creature”.
I wanted to like this book, but it was a lot of activity happening and it was happening very fast.
I think that if it wasn’t a Novella, but a longer novel, she would have had more time to explore the different areas of the story, to connect them.
I do like how we had a chance to explore Aaron, who was a new team member and introduced a couple of stories back. He is of Native American Heritage.
I thought we would have more opportunities with him to tell his story to learn more about who he is.
After reading the series you become interested in the characters of the book and even root for them.
One thing I thought was interesting in this book is that Sierra brings up the subject of how it’s no longer a team, no longer investigating, researching, they all rely on Cassidy’s paintings. They put everything on her.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the remaining series.
Also, Cassidy and Midas become engaged! Woo Hoo!
A former team member is brought back, I like her character and am interested in her storyline.
It’s a good book, a good series!

I really wish I had read this series in order. But, I read this book first and I loved it so now I have a new series to read. The creature in the title led me to read this book. I love creature books and this one was so much more than the average creature on a killing spree genre. The characters make this book and the author does well bringing them to life. I love this paranormal team. Each team member contributes to the story and I actually found myself wishing I was part of the team. This one has a little of everything and I found myself wanting more. That wanting more makes a great series...yes, I want more!
Disclaimer: I somehow accidentally read this book first in this series - so that fact alone may have coloured my opinion of the novel.
My issues with it aren't to do with continuity or any plot-related issues. The spooky bits just weren't spooky, despite all the horror aspects all being there. The prose and dialogue are quite wooden and the characters, though seemingly well-developed, fall flat. Even the final happy scene (which I won't spoil) left my feeling dispassionate and unaffected. Plot wise, the ending was quite underwhelming and I wanted more action. I do love the premise, however!
This group of ghosthunters all seem to get along well! With Sierra and husband off work with a new baby, the team is a little short of investigators. So Jocelyn joins temporarily. The Creature is scary and the team hits some bumps! A great read!
I am hooked on this series and can't wait for the next installment. M.L.Bullock has become one of my favorite writers and I am enjoying the other series she writes.
About a team if ghost investigators who are sent to check out the story if Crenshaw Monster who most refer to as a werewolf or dogman who has been terrorizing people
Great ghostly goings on with very interesting characters! Midas and Cassidy definitely deserve happiness and a wonderful life together! This series keeps getting better and better with each new investigation! I'm going right on to the next one!
Excellent. And to make it better this series is based in and around Mobile County. I sm currently on book 11 of this series and can not wait for many many more on the GCP group.
