I bow to no man.

The words are tattooed on my skin, just as they’re branded on my heart.

But I never planned for Sergeant Lincoln Asher, a man as deceptive as he is cold. His dominance sets my teeth on edge . . . and my body on fire. He won’t stop until I’m his, but I’m not his to take.

My secrets bind me—and blind me.

I live in the shadows of New Orleans. Hidden and protected in the underworld I call home. I know who I am.

I vow never to kneel before a man...

Save one.

And he will be my downfall.

description~WRITING - PLOT - PACE~
CHRIST ON A CRACKER was this book good. Like seriously, SO f-cking good! The writing was fantastic. It was very well paced. The plot was super engaging. It was told in a dual POV format. There were twists and turns. Secrets. Intrigue. Mystery. Danger. It was smokin' hot. I LOVED the setting (New Orleans). Last, it ended in a shocking twist of a cliffhanger that I thought I saw coming (and I am STILL a little convinced I have some of it figured out) but left my mind totally f-cked.

~HERO~
LINCOLN..Good lord was this guy SEXY. Who doesn't love a broody dirty cop who does bad things? I am fairly sure my tablet melted a few times. He was alpha. He was an a$$hole. He was all about Avery from the start. His character was an enigma wrapped in a mystery, and I can't wait to see what this author has in store for Lincoln in the next book.

~HEROINE~
AVERY...Avery was more of an open book with regard to her character. Probably because we get more of her history and it is heartbreaking, to say the least. I loved Avery. She was feisty. She was strong. She was smart. She seemed to be a genuinely nice person. She had the hots for Sergeant Asher right from the start. I am looking forward to seeing what she gets up to in the next book as well.

description

~SECONDARY CHARACTERS~
This book was pretty light on secondary characters. I really liked Avery's roommate though and hope we get to see more of her in the next book. Other than some baddies and random people she was pretty much it as this is a main character driven story.

~HEAT LEVEL~
Highish. There were quite a few smokin' hot sex scenes in this one. A little voyeurism. I suspect we may see even more kink in book two (I hope). And this couple has AMAZING on page chemistry.

~ANGST LEVEL - SEXUAL HISTORIES~
Fairly low. I didn't find this one particularly angsty, to be honest. It was pretty insta-lust and there really wasn't much push or pull from either the hero or heroine. My one little issue was that Avery is a 25-year-old virgin (gaaah) <--- can we PLEASE stop with the virgins in romance books...PLEASE?? I didn't get the feeling Lincoln was a manwhore, but neither was he a saint (lol). There really isn't too much said about his sexual past. There was no OW or OM drama.

~IN THE END~
I LOVED it. So much in fact that I am not even going to deduct any stars for the whole "virgin" annoyance. (lol) Fantastic writing. Fast paced. Intriguing plot. Interesting and well-developed characters. Hot sex scenes. Not much left for me to say about this one. Bring on book two!description

MY REVIEW can also be found on my blog:
KITTY KATS CRAZY ABOUT BOOKS

Once upon a time, in a far, far away land, when I'd first found myself alone and scared, I'd pictured my saviour, I'd imagined my Prince Charming as the requisite blond with the blue eyes and the tall physique-to say nothing of the fact that he'd be sweet and gentlemanly and oh-so-handsome. Lincoln Asher failed on every front-aside from his Haint blue eyes.

SWORN: A full length romance novel, the first book in ‘Blood Duet #1’ series by new to me author ‘Maria Luis.’ Spoken in ‘dual Perspectives.’

In this we meet tarot reader twenty-five year old Avery, an art she'd picked up from other readers in Jackson Square, New Orleans. She’s trying to escape a past that’s still wanting to get her in it’s clutches. Fearing for her life she hides within the shadows, living under the radar using tarot reading as a front to gather information on Jay Foley her stepfather, now the current mayor of the city, from unsuspecting patrons that sit at her table, unaware that she is grilling them on any unsuspecting information they can give her.

And thirty four year old Sergeant Lincoln Asher with the New Orleans Police department, a cop that has no qualms of getting his hands dirty.

Sinner
Saint
Cop
Crook

Hot cover..Glowing 5 star after 5 star reviews. Without hesitation I then proceeded to one click!! Which I don't regret for a second.

Admittedly this started off slow, it started building up around the half way mark when the two eventually gave into their attraction and at that point onwards it all started moving at a pace I enjoyed more and from that point onwards I was hooked. A slow burn that got me in it's clutches.

I don't think these two could've been matched up any better than they were, both lost souls, both with dark backgrounds, both in their own ways seeking vengeance, both not wanting to fall under the spell the other can cast. Neither will bow to the other. But like in their case, their attraction took them unawares. An unusual, unique read that did end on one whooper of a cliffy!! I can not wait for the next book!!

Lies, deceit, murder, suspense this had it all and amongst it all were our two characters shrouded in a cloak of deceit themselves trying to keep up with their lies.

Sworn Teaser 1
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️STARS.
ARC BOOK REVIEW
Release Date-17/5/18

"Sworn" by Maria Luis was such a good read it was also the first thing I've read by this particular author.
From the minute I started this I was transfixed and transported into the fascinating world of Avery and Lincoln.
Set against the decadent background of New Orleans; we are swiftly immersed into this rich tapestry of secrets and lies.
"Sworn" features Lincoln and Avery; the former a cop and the latter a tarot reading runner just trying to live her life whilst also staying under the radar.
Hiding really; in plain sight.
When these two finally connect sparks do fly, but with both hiding so much from each other and also drowning in undisclosed information how can it ultimately work between them both.
Well, I for one couldn't wait to find out.
And got to say this was just so good.
like seriously couldn't put it down good; the chemistry between our H and h was rocking and really hot and the storyline here was just action-packed with never a dull moment throughout.
And that ending MAN!!!!
what a cliffhanger; I for one can't wait to discover the outcome from where we left it here.
Good job I don't have to wait too long ay.
So this is told in dual POV and is relatively low on centre stage secondary characters.
There's really only Katie; Avery's best-mate/roomie, who I really adored by the way.
It's an easy to follow, well-written piece of fiction that definitely gets the stamp of approval from me.
This is one of them stories that just grabs you by the throat and digs in.
I need the next instalment of this like yesterday.
Thank You to the Author for providing me with an ARC of "Sworn (Blood Duet, #1) " of which I have reviewed voluntary.
All opinions expressed are entirely my own.

She witnessed her mother's murder, she heard it all but didn't see, but the words and the voices belonged to her stepfather and another man...
and all that she could do was run and hide...sentencing herself to the unknown, uncertainty of existence...
In that moment, at age of fourteen, Laurel Peyton had ceased to exist

her life existence was erased by the powerful PR imagery her stepfather displayed, as being the mayor of New Orleans, and Laurel became a shadow on the underground...
Avery Washington was just one alias I'd chosed in the last twelve years. I's been Samantha Lovelace for most of my teens-a naive little idiot who placed her trust in all the wrong people. Ruby Matheson during the year that I'd turned twenty-a little more jaded, but no less of an idiot...you aren't Laurel anymore, just remember that

learning the streets and experiencing hardship of life in the most basic of ways, she picked up trades, and was exploiting it...

One of them being the card reading in one of many New Orleans' squares...she's watching people, learning, observing and gathering info...cause she needs to fulfill her destiny and to avenge her mother's death...

but one encounter will make a full blast on her path...as one man Sergeant Lincoln Asher whose darkness is even more blinding than her life's existence, will lead them both on a road of decadence, carnal need, setting them up for the unpleasant surprise...when the facts of the merciless truth comes out in the ligth of day...

First time reading this author.
I was, once again, pleasantly surprised by the effortless writing while enrapturing me with the world of lies, betrayal, power and greed, filled with action and passion, where the main characters bite the bullet of their unfortunate destinies and fates, which should make them victims by all means cause they are pawns in the much bigger and cruel game and yet I can feel them struggling, fighting and making their way out of the shitty situation in any way possible, taking any means necessary...blurring the lines of black and white...

it's fast, it's dark, it's complex yet captivating and riveting...

Good Lord people!! The minute I read the blurb to Sworn I knew I needed to read it. And honestly? This story blew.my.mind!!! This was so well written. Lincoln and Avery were fantastic. They were so sexy and this story was raw, gripping and so intense. I never wanted it to end!!

On the run with secrets so deep, Avery Washington had no intentions of getting involved with a man, let alone a mysterious and broody Police Sergeant who had pain and shadows in his eyes to rival the deep dark alleys in NOLA's seedy underbelly. But when an unexpected connection is formed they find that the pasts they're both running from emerge with a vengeance putting both their lives in danger.

Gahh!! This book came out of nowhere for me!! It was AMAZING and so damn explosive!! Filled to the brim with secrets, lies, danger and intrigue I was hooked from the get go. Lincoln and Avery had the most explosive chemistry and I for one was looking for singe marks on my kindle. How is this my first Maria Luis story?! I am seriously hooked and can not wait for book two now!! Bravo!! 5 stars! ~Ratula

Very slow

This book was nothing but characters full of angst I got bored halfway through it. The plot progressed very slow and we shouldn't have to read two books to figure out what happens. I felt like it was a waste of time when the storyline could've been condensed. The heroine was wishy washy all the time and the Hero is hopeless. I don't know if I really want to read book 2.

🎧🎧AUDIOBOOK REVIEW🎧🎧

I’m not quite sure if this is a good or bad thing yet, but my mind was working overtime the entire time I was listening to this audiobook. I couldn’t quite get a grip on the story at any point. Make sense? I felt like I was always missing something. So far, I’m not counting that as a bad or good thing because this is not the whole story. This is a duet and as far as the author building the story and keeping me guessing (as she should in a duet) she nailed it and then some! Maria Luis is a new-to-me author with SWORN so I don’t know her style or voice just yet, but I can tell you with 100% certainty, that I will know it by the end of the year!

SWORN had me on the edge from the very beginning. I love being on the edge of a story. It was sexy and dangerous and carried a pulse with every scene. The chemistry between Avery & Lincoln began from act one scene one and built on every page. They pulled as much as they pushed and to be honest, so this the story. The entire thing was one like a rubber band being stretched to it’s limit oh so slowly until …

🎧 I listened listened to this story and I just cannot even describe what an incredible job Stella Hunter & JF Harding did with their performances. A duet narration is no easy feat and these two put on a performance that was flawless. I have no idea if they narrated in one studio or separate, and I can tell you that not being able to notice that is high praise in my opinion. The story came alive in living color for me and I felt every moment of it!

I’m honestly not sure how long I’m going to be able to go without grabbing DEFIED and devouring every word! I’d like to say I could wait until it is available in audiobook so I can experience the duet all in the same manner, but I can’t find a single post about its pending release date so far and we all know how patient I can be LOL and don’t want to loose the momentum I have right now about this story so …

Well done all around and, well played on that ending. WHAT JUST HAPPENED?!

First of all, Oh My GAWD. How is it that this is the first book I have ever read by this author?! It for sure will not be my last. Excuse me as I go add them all to my Kindle.
~*~* 5 Panty Scorching Stars~*~

The writing was basically flawless, I was so into this book, I devoured it in like two hours. It was just that damn good!!

I don't want to give anything and I mean not one single plot point. I don't want to spoil it for anyone.
I feel like it's okay to say that the chemistry between Lincoln and Avery is off the charts hot. I mean it has been a long time since I have blushed at a love scene, but Maria managed to make this 37 year old blush like a school girl.

-I don't get angry, Avery. I never lose my cool. And then I saw you hit the pavement and I was ready to unload my clip into any fucker who touched you. No one touches you or they answer to me. - Lincoln Asher
Lincoln is my favorite type of book boyfriend. He's an Alpha, possessive and he is an asshole. My weakness.

New Orleans had hidden me, it had harbored me. And now it gave me the opportunity to discover the truth. - Avery

Nothing is what it seems in this book, there are so many twists and turns and revelations and each one more intense than the next.

Leaving me alone to my past, that was once again my present and my foreseeable future...
The Sinner
The executioner
The man who belonged in every circle of hell.

This book was so good and I am going to need the next book like right now. Than ending blew it out of the park.

If you one click any book this May, one click this one!
The chapters flowed effortlessly, and it keeps you sitting on the edge of your seat, ready to turn to the next page to see what happens next!

" If we leave, I'm going to fuck you. Do you get that? There's no third chances. You either agree or go find someone else to play this cat and mouse game." Lincoln

NOW WAIT A DAMN MINUTE😭 that cliffhanger literally has me screaming BECAUSE WHAT?!? HIS WHAT? HIS WHO??? Like COME AGAIN???😭 Nah, this was actually a really good read from the plot to the spice to the banter between our two mc’s. I’m always down for a dark romance and this one truly did not disappoint. Then sprinkle in an age gap?! (25/35) SOLD. This follows our FMC who has been alone and on the run since she was 13 after witnessing her stepfather have her mother k*lled. That’s actually insane, and that had me intrigued from the very beginning bc i wanted to know WHY he did that?? Avery (fmc) works as a fake tarot reader and this is how she gets the attention of Lincoln our crooked-cop mmc. Immediately the tension between them ate down! But, both of them have tons of secrets and are connected in more ways than they even know, hell more than I even knew LMFAOO. There were moments where the book did feel a little dragged out, but that ending?!? YEAAAAH I’m about to jump into book 2. But here are some of my favorite quotes that i highlighted, ENJOYYY.

“I don’t get angry, Avery. I never lose my cool. And then i saw you hit the pavement and i was ready to unload my clip into any fucker who touched you. No one touches you or they answer to me.” HE ATE THATTT.

“You’ll bow to me, Avery. It might not be today and it might not be tomorrow, but it will happen.” OOP, i giggled and kicked my feet at that not gonna lieeeee.

WOW!

What a great freaking book!! I devoured my first Maria Luis book.

This story starts out with a bang and keeps you guessing all the way to the end, which of course ends on a cliff. But that is okay TRUST ME!

Avery is a 13-year-old girl when she ends up on the streets. She has to become unknown and a shadow to stay safe. Now at 25, she has become many people but she is Avery Washington a tarot card reader. She is a loner that has secrets that could get her killed, or so she believes.

Lincoln Asher has a history that is not pretty. He is a detective, killer, drug runner, and so much more. But in the very core of his soul, he has a heart, it just hasn't beat for a very long time. But when he meets Avery on chance, he finds a young woman that defies everything he believes and sees him for what he could become not what he was.

I loved this story and couldn't wait for the next one.

Sworn was my first book by Maria Luis and I think I will come back to read more of her.

It's really a good book with well developed characters, good writing and good banter.
The plot was intriguing and thrilling. The suspense got to it's peak with the cliffhanger this book leaves us with.

Avery and Lincoln have a good dynamic and both were easy to like.

How do I review this book? Well, Maria hit it out of the ball park with this one. Avery is a girl with secrets and just as they say opposited attract—in this case it is two people with similar backgrounds that attract. Lincoln is a mystery to most everyone. Is he good? Is he bad? Does it even matter because the sparks that fly from Avery and Lincoln are going to set your heart on fire for them to make it.

Secrets are the back drop of this book and the layers in which she adds them brings her story telling to a masterpiece level. Avery is a girl with a plan—one that will find vengence for the man that took away her mother. Lincoln is a dark but delicious male specimen that finds something in Avery he can't let go of.

Through there time together, it strengthens. They try to fight it but when two people are on a path of collision, it's not always bad. And I tell you—you want these two to collide. When they finally do, I don't want to give too much away—but it's epic!

Maria takes her knowledge of New Orleans and paints the city as if the reader has lived there his or her whole life. I love the history that's added and it layers the story beautifully! I can't wait until I get my hands on the next part of the fabulous book! Good job Ms. Luis! This was brilliant.

Not sure I'll try and read the next book this was a bit flat for me.

Sex scenes are interesting and I don't hate them but the underlying story puts me off and this isn't really needed. I also don't think there is a warrant for 2 books? Surely one book would have been better

Pointless cliffhanger

I don’t like books that end in a cliffhanger for no real reason other than to make you have to get the second book. With this book, I don’t care anything about either of the major characters so it doesn’t matter to me if they get shot in the face or not.

This book is a total gem!

There are so many words I could use to describe Sworn but I don’t think any of them would do the book justice. I’ve loved everything that I have read by Maria Luis but it is safe to say that Sworn has blown all of her previous works out of the water! It is definitely not the typical romcom we've to expect from her but it absolutely exceptional. You have to read it to fully grasp what an amazing story this is. Just download this book now and dive in.

There are so many layers to Sworn and it’s characters. Lincoln and Avery have major chemistry. They also have secrets, a lot of them... As the book progresses, secrets are reveals and pieces of the puzzle seem to be coming together until you realize that in this story, secrets run deeper than you could have imagined. I don't want to give anything away but I'll say this, it's rare that a book's plot twist really surprises me but I definitely did not see this ending coming.

Dark, gritty, sinister, sexy, and suspenseful. I was on the edge of my seat from the first chapter and can not wait for Lincoln and Avery’s conclusion in Defied.

Rcvd an ARC at no cost to author.. Have you ever read a book from Maria? If you haven't I ask why not? Let me tell you my friends that she is awesome, and she only gets better and better. I am about to erect an altar to her that is how good she is. Any hoo this book is stupendous. We meet Avery and this woman, huh my heart goes out to her, she is strong but still wary, and with reason I really don't want to give much info because honestly you need to read, no really. And then we have Lincoln wooowee, if he is the cover than daaayum. But trutfully Maria has outdone herself..

Oh Wow!!! I Love This Book!!!! I could hardly put this book down and was actually pretty upset when I had to stop to answer questions my family kept asking (like are you going to come eat dinner? Uh no, can't you see I'm too busy swooning over Lincoln and trying to solve a mystery in N'Orleans' shadows). The lead female is such a perfect balance of a badass woman and a lonely little girl. Then, the lead male, Lincoln; just holy hot damn, I mean, for real, holy hot f@#ing damn . . . goose bumps . . mmmmmm . . . Oh, where was I? Oh yeah! The plot of great, kept me on the edge of my seat/turning the page and I can't wait to find out what happens next!!! Also, I'm absolutely going back into this author's catalog and reading her other works.

Not sure what I want to say other than OMG! Having New Orleans as the setting is almost always a win in my book as I have family in the near area. But the story has to be intriguing and interesting and “Sworn” is both. Both Avery and Lincoln aren’t who we think that they are, especially considering how they grew up. I’m not always thrilled with continuing stories, mainly because I don’t like to wait to see what happens next. But when they’re written well, I do love the anticipation of the next part. I just started reading Maria Luis a few months ago and have read just about everything that she’s written since then. She has become one of my go to authors and can’t wait for “Defied”.

OH. MY. GOD!! Maria!! Right, someone pass me my pitchfork! Sworn, part one of the Blood duet is sooooo freaking good!! I’m talking SOOOOO good! I am so so happy that I only have to wait 2 weeks to get my hands on the second bit, because that was one hell of a cliffhanger! I can not wait!! When Maria writes us a story, she puts so much into it. There is so much detail that you can not help but feel like you are part of her story. She sucks you in and does not let go! Every one of her books is a masterpiece in their own right, and I love them all, but this one is my favourite! Maria has seriously outdone herself with this one.

This darkish suspenseful romance will have you sitting on the edge of your seat. Lincoln is a cop, a hot cop I might add! He is so mysterious! I can’t get enough of him. I love his possessiveness over Avery. I love the fact that deep down he doesn’t want to do what he is stuck doing. He had a heart, he just forgot how to use it. His back story is sad, I have so many questions! I know they will be answered in part 2!

Avery is such a brave and strong character. She hasn’t had the best life, I really feel for her. I really want her to get what she deserves. Lincoln and Avery have some pretty hot chemistry. Some parts of this book are so sexy and steamy! And that club, holy hotcakes, now that is some hot stuff! At one point I wanted to throw Lincoln’s phone at the wall because it interrupted a pretty charged scene!

This book had me hooked right from the get go, it flows nicely, never had a dull moment for me. The story is really engaging and intriguing, I am so happy that Maria decided to step into the dark side a little. It’s great to see her excel in something so different from her previous work. I absolutely love Maria’s writing and I absolutely love this story. Now I wait with bated breath for the next part of this duet, I just know that it’s going to be amazing and I simply can not wait!
