...Lived up to the build-up of the last book, hence me tearing through the entire novel in a caffeine-fueled morning/afternoon. The archer and Shizu's interactions were fun to read, and there was a good balance between showing Ainz flailing and everyone else (read: Demiurge's...) explanations of his awe-inspiring benefits. There are still some scenes where I'm not sure if I'm interpreting the Guardian's read on events correctly through the lens of Ainz-the-incredibly-unreliable-narrator, but that's half the fun of these books at this point. I think he really needed the break from Nazarick these past two books provided; he seemed much more willing to let down his guard a bit without the constant pressure of living up to his "children's" expectations so directly. (Also, he is definitely willfully oblivious on certain things they're getting up to under his command... the source of the parchment for higher-tiered spells being the biggest example brought to the forefront again in this novel...)

Worst thing about this book is that now I'm going to have to find something new to fill my craving for OP villain protagonist fiction until the next books in this series are published.

Note: I read an English translation of this series.

Definitely lived up to all the buildup of the last volume. Neia Baraja is one of my favourite characters in the series. And the result of her character development turned out to be very amusing by the ending of this volume. Also, much more gory and brutal than most of the other ones. But stuff like that doesn't bother me. Tore through this one within a day since I found it so interesting. I highly recommend it!

The author, Kugane Maruyama, creates contradictions in his light novel Overlord. The main character, Ainz (Momonga, Momon, Suzuki), his Floor Guards and the rest of his retinue of Nazarick attack, destroy, torture those that do not conflict with them. Ainz personally killed over 160 thousand Re-Estize Kingdom's soldiers. Now they are annihilating the soldiers of the Roble Holy Kingdom. This is a contradiction because at the beginning of the light novel, Both the Baharuth Empire and the Slane Theocracy tried to masacre the village of Carne and fought against Ainz and his undead. There is no cause and effect, no justice or consequence.
Maruyama subjugates the Baharuth Empire without bloodshed and has yet to fight/ seek revenge against the Slane Theocracy. While the author destroys the citizens that have done nothing against Nazarick, they have been unwilling to attack or destroy those that have been aggressive towards Nazarick. This is contradictory and does not make any sense.
Ainz is dominated by the ideals of his retinue. They believe the profiles that were created by the 41 players of the extinct video game Yggdrasil. This retinue of grotesque characters (seek terror, torture and destruction) seek to conquer this alternate reality world. Ainz seeks their approval and has no ambition, nor does he share feelings or emotions (because his character is an undead and because his "human" personality is non-conflictive, passive and subpar.
Ainz kills his "allies" and subhuman servants, aids his "enemies" and non-conquered humanoids...and feels nothing nor faces the consequences of his actions.
The illustrations are of the highest quality, the writing and long length of the story are excellent. The arguments, premises and contradictions are nonsensical, illogical and senseless. The author uses the whims and fetishes of his main characters as goals and purpose to the plot arcs and themes of this light novel. Eliminates what ever possibility of gaining the likeability of the readers. It's like this is a story of Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao Zedong, and all of the dictators and butchers of humanity and the author actually wants the readers to applaud and like them. It's irrational.

This is part 2 of the story started in the previous vol. It wraps everything up with a nice bow for this little excursion of our fav OP character who does it like usual. TBH, nothing new to see here. Much of the same as the other books. I think this will be the last thing I write about this series unless I see something in it that changes. I'm going to still read the books, but it's like watching a sitcom. It's a lot of the same thing over and over just in a new setting. Let's be honest here, there's very little to motivate the MC to actually grow as a character at all so he doesn't. The only thing that changes are HOW people die. I feel like this is starting to turn more into a comedic version of SAW more than anything else. Not really, but I'm serious, the descriptions of how people die seems to be one the few highlights in this book. With that said, I do enjoy the book. A bunch of mindless violence. So if you are looking for deep and riveting, skip this. If you want the Expendables but in light novel format...Give this series a spin.

It's overlord

It is another chapter in the Overlord saga, if you got this far you will still enjoy the series. If you haven't been enjoying it up until this point or are pushing through it then don't expect some drastic change in the style or characters.

More of the same.
I honestly don't know what else I can say. At this point it feels like Maruyama has a formula of sorts with how the Kingdom of Darkness is slowly taking over the world. It's more of the same, as with the other books.
The protagonist only has a small grasp of what is going on. His underlings are running things behind the scenes and this unfortunately takes away a lot of the protagonist's agency. Instead, he seems to be dragged along with all of their schemes, and this makes for a boring story. Couple that with him being OP as hell, means there is no true danger to him.
Now, this book is good in the way that it centered around the human characters, which was nice. You get to see how they view the Kingdom of Darkness and its ruler. You get to see how some people fear them, while others come to worship them through being manipulated. You also get to see how the non-human races get absorbed by the Kingdom from an outside view, which I admit is kind of interesting.
That said, there didn't feel like there was that much to this book. I found it hard to care about the archerer, or the female paladin. Both seemed very surface level when it came to their development, and by the end of the book, I didn't care if they were going to survive or not.
As I have said in some of my previous reviews, I am still reading this series because I want to see if anything interesting actually happens. Do they eventually ever meet someone who can challenge the Kingdom, the maids, the floor guardians, or their ruler? Right now, I suspect not. There have been ample opportunity to set it up so a true antagonist appears, but instead, none do. Thus, there doesn't really appear to be any conflict of interest in the stories, and while I know I will keep reading, I am not looking forward to it, like I should.
So yeah, all in all a meh book. Maybe the anime movie will help spark some kind of joy to this story, but I doubt it at this point.

All hail his majesty lord of darkness!

This volume was the best yet in such a different way. Finishing up from where the previous volume left off, a bulk of this book follows Neia and turns her character into a devout worshipper. The story beats hit on a scale from l hilarious snorts to goosebump inducing power trips.

The only bad things to note (extremely few) are that writer still has some extra fat in the scenes, over used translated phrases, and it seems that near the end Maruyama just wanted to be finished. That said, a lot of the puffier scenes of diplomatic dialogue or battle reactions seemed to be long winded and didn’t really add to the already established gravity of the scene. The words ‘in other words’ has been a staple reoccurrence in the translations like ‘marionette with its strings cut’ but I feel there’s too much of that near the end. Speaking of the end, the pacing kind of gets fast forwarded in the last battle and the epilogue.

Fortunately everything else in the book came up aces. I really loved the characters, the direction the series is going, and the development of older characters we were barely been introduced to. The scenes grip you and have you laughing along to the big inside joke being played.

Overall 10/10… can’t wait for the next volume to be translated so I can add volume 14 to my Overlord shelf.

This is probably my favorite "Overlord" novel in the entire series! Or at least, one of my favorites, along with the first few that hit incredibly well. And considering how much I just didn't vibe with this arc originally, that is incredibly high praise.

I ended up really loving Neia's character arc, as well as the fall and rise of the kingdom. It was surprisingly satisfying to watch Ainz's plan just fall perfectly into place, as well as to watch the people about him fall madly in love with him. This was where Maruyama's writing style really shined and I loved it.

There were still too many annoying fights and debate scenes featuring human characters I don't care about talking for way too long, but I honestly ended up not caring at all. The rest of the book was so great that I could easily look over all of my issues.

I'm very excited to see this arc get animated in the upcoming movie. I still think the arc of season three is my favorite overall, but this has easily become my second favorite without question. And seeing this get animated might enhance my opinion even more.

I just don't understand why this book has such a high rating. It really isn't that good at all.

What keeps me coming back is following the story of the main character and the unique, interesting world and characters.

This book focuses on side characters, like the previous one, that are easily forgettable and not part of the main saga.

Factor in the lack of growth for the main character and his odd ability to be strangely nonchalant about mass murder in one book and then tripping over himself to prevent the death of a single person, makes this entire series absolutely batshit insanity.

I still want to read the series because, as I mentioned, I'm super interested to see where it goes but I can't help but wish the characters in the series was written better.

The Saga is rushed

This, the 13th installment is typical in style and substance - it’s everything you’ve come to expect, except perhaps the focus having pulled away from the series protagonist. Even then, this is not unprecedented.
The only problem I have with the boom is the feeling that is was rushed to print. Several editing errors, one of which lead me to re-read a passage several times.
Never the less, I look forward to the next arc, perhaps returning to Carne village? What does one do with a Goblin Army?

Sora seemed to highly recommend this series and I am honestly disappointed. I mean it is fine to read but it is getting predictable with how everything ainz does happens to work out great. what a deus ex machine.

Here we see him try a "oh I am dead" how will you handle it trial run and we don't see anyone falling for it. We don't see how they handled it.

Where is the challenge man this dude is too op.

Liked the world building and especially the comedy. Especially towards the end when all the threads we had come together for the best punchline, though this is not a comedy, it is one of the few works whose comedy transcends the anime production. (It does not have an adaptation for this part of the story as of the writing of this review.)

There are a lot of questions I wanted to be answered to the point where I was very disappointed when I finished the book. Hopefully, it will be answered by the next issue. The book was generally good

A bit weaker than the first volume, but still pretty good. Neia was a fun character to see turned to fanatic, but a bit more Ainz or others would have been fun. Still a good conclusion to this Sacred Kingdom part!

5/5 stars all around.

I'm amazed. Impressed. Flabbergasted. Bamboozled. In awe. Book 12 as a set up for this book is WORTH IT. Holy crap. My eyes hurt from reading three days straight, all day each time, but this migraine is so worth it. This is my favorite series to date.

I gotta say I enjoyed this one more because it has a new point of view, which is not Ainz. However, the action is mainly political. So readers must be ready for some long explanations about who does what for whom.

Now that I’m getting more reading under my belt, I’m grating to appreciate more world building. That was stopping me from continuing this series because it kept adding more characters but I’m starting to like it now.
