About the author

He started off as an author and journalist, but moved on to be an active writer in the Indian film industry for 7 years. He worked as a drama producer in All India Radio between December 1953 and May 1956. At this point he realised that a regular job would always be a hindrance to his literary life, so he devoted himself to freelance writing.

Often cited as the true literary heir of Premchand, Amritlal Nagar created his own independent and unique identity as a littérateur and is counted as one of the most important and multi-faceted creative writers of Indian literature.

नागर जी द्वारा लिखी इस पुस्तक से मेरी बड़ी आशाएँ थी। आशाएँ धूमिल ही ना हुईं, मन खट्टा हो गया। इस पुस्तक में दो ही बातें हैं, पुरुष की दृष्टि से वेश्याओं के बारे में एकदम वस्तुनिष्ठ सूचनाएँ हैं वे भी बिखरी हुई सी। दूसरी बात है लेखक का पूरे समाज का प्रतिनिधि बनकर वेश्याओं के बारे में अपने विचार लिखना जो मूलतः यह हैं कि वे घृणित होती हैं, दुष्ट होती हैं और सिर्फ़ पुरुष के धन को सोखने हेतु अपना पूर्ण जीवन, समय और सामर्थ्य लगा देती हैं। मेरे विचार में इस विषय पर भली प्रकार से शोध किए हुए तथ्यों के साथ ही इनके प्रति या तो पूर्णतः तथटस्थ होकर या रत्तिभर ही सही दयालुता के साथ लिखी पुस्तक उपयुक्त रहेगी। यदि ऐसी कोई पुस्तक लिखी गयी है और किसी अन्य पाठक को ज्ञात हो तो बताने की कृपा करें।
