A king who learns that loyalty and victory come in many forms...a teenager who is already sick of meeting his descendants...an elderly woman whose life is changed by an invasion of mice...all these and more live in Into the Bewilderness, a collection of short stories by John W. Otte. These stories range from the depths of space to just around the block.
This collection of short stories has a little of everything. Contemporary fiction, Fantasy, Sci Fi (some but not all is a bit dystopian), and even a horror story. Even with a dozen stories, this compilation is novela length combined. (Only half the stories have more pages than you have fingers, with the longest being 22 pages and the shortest two being 3 and 4 respectively.)
If like me you're a fan of his novels, you may or may not enjoy this collection as much. The stories are strong at giving you things to think about, but some can be a little depressing. (But then, a lot of sci-fi can be depressing, and then there's horror.) Still, it has John Otte's great story-telling style; I enjoy the telling of the stories more than the stories told. On the other hand, some of the stories contain John Otte's great humor (most notably Focal Point).
John Otte is on my short list of favorite authors. I'll admit this collection is my least favorite offering of his I've read, but I still found the stories thought provoking and well written.
An absolutely fantastic short story anthology from one of my favorite authors! John Otte knows how to tell stories of a wide variety, with each genre and situation being unique. You never know if you're going to get a warm fuzzy ending or a shocking one. Highly recommend!
