An Englishman Abroad: My Autobiography

Rate this book
Bobby Robson's road to success has been marked by his determination and love for soccer. Starting his working career as a Newcastle miner and amateur, he rose from the ranks to play for England. After his playing career was over, he made the natural progression towards management, building Ipswich up from a struggling side to championship contenders. He took England to the 1990 World Cup semis, only losing on penalties, a feat that earned him the respect of the nation.

There are some nice behind-the-scenes anectodes from the footballing world but I really wouldn't trust everything that is said in this book.

You can read between the lines that Bobby Robson might not be the genius he is touted as and could have just been in the right place at the right time. Every time his team succeeds it is directly because of his brilliance and every failure is because of someone else, like corrupt referees. The most hilarious bit is when he takes full credit for the work of his assistant manager (one Jose Mourinho...) while he himself is on a sick leave.

Quite honestly my all time favourite football book. Many interesting stories from Sir Bobby's various clubs all over Europe. A must read for any football fan.

Quite enjoyable, especially the very early years but ultimately he doesn't have very much interesting to say about his very interesting life.
