Lost and Found: Money vs. Riches

Rate this book
Roger Lam was faced with a real money problem at a very young age when his birthright - the family business, was snatched away from him, and he developed a secret distrust of parental provision since the age of 14. Money became his biggest hang-up and slave driver, and the childhood financial trauma triggered a quest for worldly success academically and then in the field of finance fueled by fear and anger for the better part of two decades until he got a divine wake-up call. In Lost and Money vs. Riches, Roger Lam shares his counterintuitive, God-orchestrated journey of setting free from the slavery to money by following the countercultural Biblical teachings on wealth and possessions. Along the way, he had to repeatedly confront and overcome his underdog mindset, which was a byproduct of his sense of insecurity. Some of the stories are nothing short of supernatural. Without a doubt, Roger Lam has suffered monetary losses in his lifetime, but what he found instead over the course of his journey is of infinite and eternal value. By telling his story with great transparency and vulnerability, the life lessons that can be extracted from each chapter are potentially transformative and redemptive to our world, which has been blinded to awareness of the real truth of provision.

I read both the author’s books including this one together on one evening. What Roger encountered in his life show how great is our God. The second book Lost to Find reveals more of his story of following God’s calling and being obedient and generous. It allows me to reflect deeply what we merely hold on to in life materially and financially are meaningless in God’s kingdom. This doesn’t mean God doesn’t bless us with money but means we are to surrender our control totally. Highly recommended to both Christians and otherwise.

Sincere, powerful, moving. It’s an understatement to say that Roger is brave in speaking so candidly about the topic of materialism in a society esteemed for its devotion to capitalism! Perhaps some readers may conveniently scoff that Roger is merely having a good old whine through the heat of the hamster wheel. But looking into the heart of his story is most certainly a pure and magnificent account of a person whose life course and purpose has been dramatically transformed through his deep spiritual experience and surrender in Christ. Thank you, Roger for sharing your incredible story of faith to challenge us into taking a good, hard look at ourselves and ponder the great question of what our purpose is and where our treasures lie.

Journey through the rabbit hole.

Roger, in his most sincere way, takes us through the rabbit hole of growing with God - awakening, testing, trusting and emanating, especially with the touchy subject of money. The door can only be shown, but everyone of us must walk through it ourselves, as Roger is walking through it now. This book will be a revelation to people who are concerned about the insecurity of the future, especially when they are seeking for God.

A compelling read where the author - Roger Lam - through his unique blend of humor takes us on his life journey and demonstrates to us how his perception of money changed over time as God touches his heart and liberates his soul from a childhood financial trauma. Whether you’re a Christian or non-Christian, it’s an inspiring piece on how to break away from “slavery to money” to “gaining mastery over it”. Highly recommended!
