Mumblings from the Depth

Rate this book
An amputated soldier yearns to see the world and gets a brief glimpse of the beauty around him through the loaned eye of another.

A brash and over-confident star athlete on whom a nation’s hope lies takes a walk down the memory lane.

The dreams of an Iraqi football player gets shattered by the great dictator which leads him to yearn for death to come knocking on his door.

A Titanic survivor reminisces his bitter survival.

And many more.

What did these people have in common? Or maybe, there must have been something that attached these different people who were spread across different walks of life with varying history and time periods. The truth is that these people aid heed to the voices in their heart.

The mumblings of love, despair, dreams, gratitude, guilt, hope and many more. These mumblings made them common by a single thread.

The book isn’t a casual read and the author urges the reader to lend his mind. The collection of short stories along with the prose at the beginning of each story would take the reader to a roller coaster ride of reality and truth leaving aside all the mirage that our modern lifestyle has forced onto us.

Passing through various seasons and times, join a journey that would make you also listen to the mumblings of your own heart – the mumblings from your own depth.

Mumblings from the Depth by Jithu Biji Thomas is a collection of 21 short stories reflecting the different faces of pain in human lives. The central theme in each story remained to be a pain (heartbreak, longing, worsened face of humanity, etc). Thus, the book very well justifies its title.

Each story begins with a poetic verse that hints at what could be expected in the story. The stories travel through different aspects of human life and present us with raw emotions. They did not set in one place, one country, or even one timeline. They are spread far and wide across the realms of time and space. A few of them intrigued me with their evocative narrative while others fared just well.

Lucid writing coupled with acute observation of the surroundings brought out these stories. The narration is pretty good creating vivid descriptions of characters, places, and emotions. There are metaphors and symbols to portray the essence of any story which turned out to be good. There are grace and charm that underlines this book. However, a round of editing would have definitely made the book better.

I believe anybody looking for short stories would enjoy reading this collection.

An amazing debut work

First of all, kudos to this author on his debut work. I was extremely fortunate to have read his blogs earlier. The idea of reading his book got me chills. This was definitely an amazing work. I loved the way he began every story with a poem that may or may not explain everything but it gets well supported by the stories that followed. Can't wait for the future works from this author.

Thank you Jithu for sending the book for a honest review. This book consist short stories that have a deep emotions and thoughts. The first chapter itself touches your heart and encourages you to read further. There are free stories which touched me deeply. Like the chapter a person tells about her mom and another story of David where one David dies and another David is born. These short stories were heart touching. overall these short stories were good Goodread... 😊

The book ‘Mumblings from the Depth’ hit me hard recently, because I started reading this book with no expectations but it turned out to be an amazing book! Good books should leave an impact and trace in your memory and this collection of short stories did that to me.

Talking about the stories, I loved all short stories but my favourites are ‘Won’t you jump for me?’ and ‘The prisoner without a jail’.
Have you ever wondered about a broken bridge obstacle between two desperate souls? The story ‘Won’t you jump for me’ has broken bridge as a symbolism for obstacle between two desperate souls. Talking about the characters, there are two beautiful characters, a girl with a blue eye and the man with a desperate soul. The eventual part is really pleasant and emotional. Sometimes you need not to read long stories to feel the heart wrecking emotions, rather a crisp beautiful story will grasp your soul!

The author has also touched the subject of jews and Nazis in one of the stories. To be honest, after reading the book, I couldn’t believe that this is his debut book, because the stories are not stereotyped and graciously written.

There's a certain kind of appeal that writing in pain calls for, a type that attracts those who are receptive towards it. And when the author has that power to put that pain that is able to catch the attention of the readers, there's always a sense of shattering that is reciprocated.
"Mumblings from the Depth" has pain, shattering, abyss surrounded theme as its crux point but I felt that the author failed to justify the intensity and the magnitude through the narrative.

When a prose starts with something poetic—which is contradictory to the very nature of prose, I was surprised but, at the same time, ready to explore. Although the poetic ramblings fell short of depth which I felt was again contradictory to the title of the book and the theme (as mentioned in the first paragraph), the stories however were good enough to be read in cozy times.

The writing was plain and not anywhere were too many mentions of literary devices to be broken down by me, the start of every story was tried to have been very poetically enticing but they were simple.

This book, however may not interest of please Poetry readers and prose worshipers; is a good read for those who want to attempt to start reading. As this book has branches of different themes connecting to one, it is easy for a beginner.

Review:
The book is a collection of short story and prose. Every story is different in its own way. The book consists of 21 short stories which are emotionally bound and connects well to most of us. The stories throws light on pains faced in life. The collection of short stories along with the prose at the beginning of each story takes us on a roller coaster ride of reality and truth leaving aside all the mirage that our modern lifestyle has forced onto us. The mumblings of life are effectively penned. This being author’s debut book, he has given his best .Kudos for that. The content is mature. All characters seem to have mumblings in common. The book focuses on themes of love, despair, dreams, gratitude, guilt, hope and many more.
These heartwarming tales are based on true events, unspoken thoughts and deep sad endings which we are afraid to face. Many stories have unexpected twist which keeps the plot interesting.
Takes:
1. The title is apt to the storyline. The cover is suitable to the storyline as well as title.
2. Language is lucid and error free. The narration is smooth and writing style is pretty good. Plot is engaging and keeps the readers hooked till the end.
3. The characters are well developed and detailed descriptions makes one interested to read further chapters. Scenes portrayed are real and vivid.
4. The story is fast paced emotional read. Many circumstances in the story seem to relate to our lives as well.
Overall, it’s an emotional short read and a journey that is less travelled for few and existing path for many. Highly recommend to every reader as it has got relatable content. Do give it a try.
Happy Reading !!!

Book - Mumblings from the depth
Author - Jithu Biji Thomas

🌺The writing style is crisp & by using simple words author luminously conveyed each & exact emotion in all the stories. The narration is smooth & words flow so rhythmically making readers drown into the book.

🌺Mumbling from the depth is a collection of 21 stories from different people. Mumblings mean speaking in a low voice or unspoken words. The title totally justified to the book. Because all the stories are the deep unspoken thoughts of persons that buried within a deep heart. Each story starts with small prose whose meaning can be understood after finishing the actual story. All the stories cover emotions like Death, longing, guilt, humanity, injustice, loss & pain. The author did a commendable job.

🌺My fav stories are
*That love that never expected - You amazed to know who the story is about.
*A dream that went wrong - Heart-wrenching story of a boy dreaming to become a football player
*Reflections - Forgetting the important things by competing in the race of life.
*The letters of our life, Hatikavah & The prisoner without a jail, Slower & even slower & Beck..Beck...It's very difficult to pick one bcoz all are great stories.

🌺My only disappointment is the book cover. It could have been designed better. This book is an example of 'Don't judge a book by it's cover'.

🌺One of my fav reads of the year. Highly recommended for beginners or who loves short stories novels.

About the book: Today I am reviewing a collection of 21 short stories that narrates experiences of different people. The cold winter mornings, the warmth of the shawls and the coziness of the blankets have always forced me to walk down my memory lane and reflect on my past. So at this point of time, this book was all I needed. The stories explore the reflective emotions of the people by whom they were told. Interestingly all of them had something in common, and that's their reminiscence. Their remembrances and thoughts will leave an impact on the reader.

My opinion: Firstly, I loved the poems with which all the stories began. I loved the way the stories were told, how the suspense was held and how it revealed the depth of thoughts of the narrator. They are reminded of their past experiences, life's pain, guilt, and hidden sins. The narration is so amazing that you can see and visualise the story through the author's words. I can understand that like the stories the author wanted to keep the cover simple but more could have been done with the cover.
I feel this book is perfect for anyone who is a beginner or like reading deep texts. Also if you like reading short stories definitely pick this up.

Mumblings From The Depth by @jithubijithomas is a collection of short stories and prose. Mumbling simply means to speak something quietly so that other people cannot hear. Just like the meaning of this word "mumbling", one cannot understand what will be revealed at the end of story.

I liked the writing style of author extremely so much. His writing style reminded me of writings that gives you a soothing feel and a relaxing aura. Mostly these kind of styles I have read in foreign author's work so reading something from Indian author was literally a treat to my eyes.

Stories and prose were really short but I will say that no details were missing from them. Everything was beautifully covered by author and conveyed it's message. Author has done a great job to touch heart of readers.

I will recommend this book to all the people who love to read short stories and want something refreshing or something soothing to eyes and heart. Also, to the beginners because the language is lucid and you can easily understand the stories.

I loved this collection of 21 very short stories. Written in simple and with well-defined backdrop, I was at awe whenever I finish a story and come back to the poem to check its veracity. All stories are deep and holds some weightage when it comes to our sins and hidden guilt. The way author weaved stories for different circumstances is indeed a work of an author that must be well-read and well-traveled. The first story is itself a terrific to impress you. As one delves deep, the more exciting it becomes to read further. Life and its pain stands out in all the stories. I enjoyed and even reading the collection once again.

A collection full of themes running around love, loss, pain, suffering, fear, despair, hope, and longing to have a life back that could have been full of mirth and blessings. In our lives, bittersweet memories never leave us alone. Based on the same theme, I found this collection high on intensity and questioning moral values.

Take Away:
Good narration and background to all stories.
Spanning across continents and different timeline of the world.
All stories are great with unexpected, yet simple twists.
Stories make up the serious mood and may evoke nostalgia and sentiments of old days.

How many of you, here, read this book more than twice? Had it been survey, I would have got the answer Yes, presumably. This is a great book but only for serious literature lovers. I also liked the concept that runs like banter in the collection - murmuring or mumbling or least said voices. We all have some actions done that leave later a lump full of mumblings. Life is not vacant, it has to be moving, that's what this collection urges us to do. I have also reviewed this book on my blog but thought of extending my views here for some philosophy... a worth collection...must pick up this time.

A though-provoking collection of short stories. The stories in the collection provided me enough fodder for thoughts on loss and life. I was moved by all the stories and it was amazing to see how destiny and future shape up based on our contrition and feelings in both times, happy and tough. It is one of the best collections on life and loss I have ever read in my life. Highly recommended book for serious readers.

I love to read while traveling. Since long stories can't be completed at one go, I prefer to read short stories while traveling. Every story is unique. The author has very well written about the mumblings of our own heart. By reading this book, it gave me a chance to look within and listen to the mumblings from my own depth. The story shows about the life and the pain that comes along. A must read.

I always love to read short stories as they can be read anywhere. I generally read short stories on my way back to home from office. This short story collection has a prose at the beginning of every story. These stories introduce us to the reality. Will That Same Rain Fall Again is my favourite story. These stories are written in a simple language. I really enjoyed reading the whole collection.

The title of the book is really apt and matched well with the content of the book. The term 'mumblings' is used because these stories are not spoken out, but held deep within a person's thoughts. The narration of the stories is great. Really loved them and found them relatable.

💞“Oh, my beloved eye,
I trusted you with my life,
My perceptions, my choices, my all,

Mumblings from the depth is a collection of 21 short stories intertwined with prose in the starting which mainly describe the sadness and pain of people that is left unsaid and kept in their hearts. Thus, the title of the book describes.

The theme of every story is love, heartbreak and longing for someone. Each story is filled with raw emotions. The stories are mainly set in different times of war and isolation.

The writing style of this book is very sophisticated. The language is lucid and the narration is very smooth. The characters are well developed. It has many emotional parts too.
Overall a good read. Recommended to beginners and those who are looking for short stories.
