Usually when you read the manga or Light Novel of an anime your first thought is ‘They f****d up the anime’. I didn’t get that vibe at all with this. Instead it was like adding an extra scoop of ice cream to an already delicious sundae. Reading this LN provided extra bits of dialogue, more POVs, and even new characters. If I wasn't already familiar with at least a portion Overlord's large cast and locations I might have found this overwhelming. As such I completely I agree with the anime’s abridged version. This clunky-ness is further compounded by the translation. No offense! I love translators who work hard to get us awesome content, but some things were definitely lost in translation. As such I think this is a wonderful supplemental read, and a poor standalone.

For those not familiar with the anime or manga this story is an Isekai styled fantasy adventure. Normal office worker Suzuki gets transported to a fantasy world as Momonga, his video game persona. As Momonga he has with him his entire guild’s resources including the NPCs his friends and him created. They all revere and love him as their peerless master. With their help he intends to explore this new strange world he seems to be trapped in. Also his NPCs thinks he wants to rule the world?! Uh-oh. He’s just a normal guy- what does he know about world domination? Despite his inner flailing, Momonga proves to be a force to be reckoned with as he takes the world by storm as the Sorcerer King. Riddled with humor, darkness, political intrigue, and plenty of action. This series is a delight.
This particular volume covers what I would equate to Season 3 episodes 9-13.

Yo I read this because I didn't have enough patience to wait for the anime
The one character I didn't want to die got killed and I feel kinda betrayed.it was a good death though and they were pretty satisfied with their life (;へ:)
The battle between the kingdom and the empire was horrifying(ΩДΩ)
The writing and descriptions are as good as ever
I'll read this book again once in proper order

god this book makes me sad (T▽T)

The Caster of Destruction picks up shortly after the end of The Invaders of the Great Tomb. Some details from the side stories in the previous book are relevant here, but it primarily continues the main story. Among Overlord fans who keep up with the original Japanese versions of the book, Vol. 9 is largely considered to be the best. The battle between the Kingdom and the Empire mentioned in previous novels takes place here in epic, fantasy proportions. That being said, there are a few faults in here that have more to do with translation quality than plot/characters.

Like the previous books, The Caster of Destruction is split into several parts. Each part shows different character perspectives and acts like a mini-story within the main story. The beginning is a bit slow as it builds up to the battle but speeds up as the war approaches. It does feel like as this series goes longer, we start to see more of the same. People underestimate Ainz and co. for and bad things happen to them. Many sections are from the POVs of these characters. It gets a little stale building up characters who readers know are likely to be slaughtered.

But when the slaughter actually commences, audiences will not be left bored. This is another installment in the series that hammers in a key point: Ainz is the bad guy. He may have been human once, but he is now literally a heartless monster. As the story goes on and more time passes, he seems to lose more and more of his former humanity. What he does, or orders others to do, to people continues to be horrific while he feels nothing. He is not without mercy, but his definition of ‘mercy’ is not exactly the dictionary definition.

***SMALL SPOILER BELOW***

One thing very irksome in The Caster of Destruction was a translation error. In this book, Nazarick becomes a country and Ainz gains a title as king. The country is called the Sorcerer Kingdom with Ainz known as the Sorcerer King. For whatever reason, the translation changed his title to King of Darkness and the nation to the Kingdom of Darkness. Which seems to be the most generic villain title in any work of fiction, ever. Considering the Overlord anime, which covered the events of this book last fall, successfully translated the Sorcerer King title correctly, I do not know what happened there. Granted it was still good to read this book given the budget issues the show had during season 3, but the mistranslation felt the book feeling somewhat incomplete.

I came here directly from the anime and maybe because I was not used to the story. The book took some time to really hit its stride. Maybe I will revise my rating after reading the previous volumes.

In this volume we see Ainz stepping on the major world stage, showing his tier 10 spell. Now everyone knows about the military strength of his kingdom.

The massacre is just numbers to us, but the book never lets us forget that he is still a undead and lives of people outside his guild are incomparable.

Wow, just wow, this book is so brutal and impressive and a crescendo in the story, so many things happened here that’s no wonder why it was chosen for a season ending.

Done.
Styl overlorda jest rozwzleczony, jest powolny, przysłania go ogrom niepotrzebnych opisów uczuć, planów itd więc suma sumarum... Niewiele się dzieje przez te 350 str książki. Mimo to przedstawia ciekawe podejście, ciekawych ludzi i ciekawe rozwiązania akcji.

Well. The best volume in series so far. The second battle of Carne village is've read and re-read about six times already. Book contains nothing principally new comparing to previous series installments but story is so solid, touching and immersing that is is impossible to stay indifferent.

This is the last book that has been turned into the anime, and also the one where Ainz starts to make his move towards world conquest.

I read this one quite fast compared to the others in this series, mostly because of a vacation I had and I didn't feel like picking up any of my other light novels at the time. So what did I think?

Well, it's basically what you come to expect at this point. Lots of posturing saying: Look at how overpowered we are compared to the others in this world. Even the world's best can't touch us, and because of that we are going to rule you all because you're lowly humans, blah blah blah. Honestly, it's repetitive and getting old. The whole 'show Ainz is slowly being corrupted' is even old by this point and it makes me yearn for something different.

I found myself wishing that another player would show up who is a 'good guy' and start decimating everyone in the Great Tomb of Nazaric just so something gets changed up. I mean, Ainz doesn't feel like a protagonist anymore as there's nothing really powerful enough to fight back against him and the Great Tomb of Nazaric. I suspect Demiurge is going to do something that messes everything up later on and is super evil, but then again, Ainz does that in this very novel, so...

In the end, this one is just an average book for me. You get a super bloody battle involving HP Lovecraft's creatures (which was a nice touch, but also sort of felt out of place in the novel), you get a negotiation with stupid amounts of posturing, and we lose someone who was actually interesting and could have helped to keep the readers invested.

Man I hope the next book is better. Let's see what Ainz does with his own kingdom of subjects who aren't super loyal to him...

Simply an amazing power fantasy.

Ainz Ooal Gown's plans have dire impact for the weak nations that surround him. This volume shows the perspectives of each nation and how they are dealing with the threat that Ainz poses to the entire world. Some worship him, others respect him, but most are afraid of the unfathomable power he possesses. You are in the shoes of a god.

As for this volume in particular, I enjoyed the many arcs that swim around the gravity of such an insanely powerful force. Seeing how they deal with the inevitable and the embracing the feelings they conjure when those that are used to being on top are finally met with the impossible situation of defeat gives you a rare cathartic feeling that you can escape into fully. You'll get goosebumps at the major payoffs when they happen.

The only bad thing I can nitpick about for these series of books is the prose in the translation. I'm not sure what the original japanese text includes, but the translation has a lot of lengthy prose that expands the wordcount needlessly and makes some sentences a slog to get through. Another small issue lies in subtle grammatical issues that snuck by in the editing process-- a missing quotation mark and the end of a paragraph can cause confusion when there is a lot of inner dialogue and exposition laced within a conversation. These are all minor infractions and does not affect the story as a whole.

Book 9 is finished and now it's on to book 10. This has been an amazing journey so far and I recommend it to anyone who loves a good power trip.

The main character of Overlord is Ainz (Momonga-Suzuki-Momon) is a fool of average intelligence and potential in reality. Has absolutely no ambition and is moved by his retinue and their high esteem and image of him and the 41 members of the Ainz Ooal Gown Guild in the Yggrasil video game. Main character feels nothing putting to death hundreds and thousands of sentient beings in this new world. At the same time his retinue and floor bosses, are experimenting for the first time in their existences, feelings, emotions and personal thoughts ( derived from their character profiles created by the guild members).
The main character spends his free time looking at himself in the mirror and posing. While his floor bosses promote the final objective of dominating the whole new world. These obvious contradictions take away from the merits of this light novel: the beautiful illustrations, the size and quality of the writing, the depth and uniqueness and grotesqueness of the characters.
Volume 9 moved a bit slow for my taste. If the main characters are so highly OP (over-powered) in this new world, they should just defeat all of their enemies (like Sebas finished off the 6 arms of the Eight Finger criminal organization) (even without any description).
There is no point to the details (Character development, secondary story arcs, etc.) if the final objective is the total destruction/domination of this new world.

I've FINALLY DONE IT. I've finished all of the light novels that the anime has currently covered. It's also sad though as I don't think volume 10 has been published in English (Edit: nevermind, volume 10 has also been published, though that is the last one currently available). On the subject of this book specifically, though... there's a good amount of stuff to unpack. I think this novel is where he truly see Ainz abandon the last possible chance for showing any sliver of humanity. It reminds me of the scene in Julius Ceasar before they kill him, begging him to repeal his banishment of Publius, and he does not repeal it. It's the last chance of redemption for both of them and it ends in tragedy. That single moment before he casts the spell is the most important of them all. We also get to see some more interesting human perspectives on a God-like deity, Fluder providing the perspective of one enamored by the power and Jircniv's perspective - one of defiance. This entry is truly only meant to present that idea (also it's meant to be extremely fun to read as all of Maruyama's works are). I really enjoyed this one, it was the most fun read of the whole series so far and I'm ready to dive into unknown territory.
Highly recommended as per usual

Summary
Basically this book is about a guy who gets transfered into a frictional world or a game where he is overpowered and has ~42 overpowered followers who thinks he (Momanga or something like that later he becomes Ainz) is the greatest and the best. One of my best Frictional novels I have ever read.
It joins togather comedy with the seriousness and also answers about the reality of socitey. It's fun when his followers overpraise him about something he dosen't Know.
For example one of his Smartest follower Demurgus thinks Momanga is smarter than him their conversetion goes like.

Momanga: So everything is fine right?
Demurgus: Oh how smart of you My lordyou found something was wrong So fast? You are talking about that right?
Momanga: Yes that?
Demurgus: That is amazing?
Momanga: Oh, Can you solve That?
Demurgus: Of course that is not a probelm.
Momanga (on his heart): "But i dont know what that is?"

4.5 stars. It's slow going with the political theatrics on all sides as they gear up for war. Ainz Ooal Gown is making steps to open Nazarick further to the wider world, but his goals are often misunderstood by everyone involved, which ends up making for some hilarious conversations between him and his Guardians. But once the war commences, we see multiple facets and factions involved that speak to the awesome might that Nazarick has at its command, not just Ainz and his Guardians. The magic that he has brought to this world is a game-changer on a level that hasn't been seen in centuries. But now that he has shown his power in such a grand manner, it's only a matter of time before that gets attention...

The previous volume of "Overlord" was easily the most disappointing in the series so far, it wasn't enough to make me give up on the series, but enough to put a sour taste in my mouth. I hoped that the next volume would at least partially make up for that.

And oh boy did it ever!

This volume is *exactly* what I want from "Overlord"! Dark themes, an emphasis on horror and fear, gigantic battles, and watching Ainz lose his humanity even more as all the humans around him look on in horror. *This* is what made me like "Overlord" in the first place!

I'm not sure if its my favorite volume in the series, but it it most certainly up there. I highly recommend this one, especially if you weren't a fan of the previous entry in the series. Looking forward to the next one!

Writing: 5/5
Overall Plot: 5/5

I believe this marks the end of where season three of the anime stops, if I’m remembering correctly. This book has kept the quality of the series going strong, making me wish I had bought the next book in the series to binge read.

I’m also eager to continue the series, because from this book on I don’t have any spoiler knowledge from watching the anime. Knowing that is almost intimidating, finally going in to this series without knowing what’s already going to happen. It’s amazing.

Thoughts:

At least they mostly figured out how to english this time..

This was the arc I was looking forward to reading again and honestly? They did alright. This part of the story forms a relatively natural endpoint, and the next few going forward are largely world building of various flavors so I think I may stop here.

As always, stories about accidentally becoming an evil overlord are fun and in this book the main character embraces it in a wonderful and horrifying way.

Ehh... I'm starting to get a little bored with this series. I'm skimming a lot of the royal political stuff because none of it matters. Ainz is just going to easily destroy all of them.

There's not much else to this volume. The villagers didn't get much to do and the joke of Ainz getting Demiurge to make all of the plans is a little old.

This was the last volume covered by the anime. It may be sunk cost but I'll give the series a couple of more volumes to pick back up.

Brilliant, one of the best in the series so far. This series is just pushing what you would accept from your protagonist, I mean from the start he is clearly not the good guy, and the story itself doesn't really starkly contrast good and evil, but this time it got really dark. Many developments and a few twists. Can't wait to finish this series

The author continues to balance really well the OP members of Nazarick and the common folk of the Kingdom (and now the Empire). Had a massive “whaaaaaaaat!?!?!” moment in the end! These Overlord novels continue to be some of the best written LNs out there. Will definitely continue this series!

Overlord has gotten really good again. I would say that the series first peaked with the Men in the Kingdom arc, vol. 5-6. Now with volume 9, maybe even 8, it is just as good again, maybe even better.

Increíble
