This is a cute, magical little book that does exactly what it says on the cover. As a witchy bride who loves ritual and superstition, I enjoyed learning more about where a lot of our traditions come from and how similar so many of them are across different cultures. I don't know that I will incorporate anything new that I learned here into my wedding, but I enjoyed learning it all the same.
Eleni shares how she became fascinated by folklore and rituals. She also shares what she learned about love while studying strangers' weddings and why she wanted to combine them in a manual for couples looking to plan unique and significant ceremonies. She talks about how our society is losing our rituals and cultures a little. When planning a wedding, this book is about learning new ways to bring meaning into your wedding that is personal and connects you to previous generations and future generations. This is about all the people who got a couple to the point of marriage and who support them throughout the marriage and their lives together, creating a sense of community.
This book has a gorgeous hardback cover, a beautiful red book with gold decorations on the front. It is the perfect gift for anyone who gets engaged.
I think I would have enjoyed this more if there were real pictures from real weddings showcasing various traditions. The little cartoon-y illustrations get tiring. I also think the book should address cultural appropriation and that it is not necessarily okay to adopt a different culture's tradition because one thinks it is cute or romantic.
The name of the author had my boyfriend fiancee husband giggling from the minute we tore open the delivery box. A delightful read with adorable illustrations.
I LOVED the representation of different cultures across all the chapters. We were able to find traditions for both his Korean heritage and my very mixed Peruvian/Italian/etc. one (a feat not for the easily stressed!). It gave us ideas for the engagement–which I didn't know, obviously–and our first wedding. Super excited to reread this as I plan for the bigger wedding. 🥰 🥰 🥰
This is such a fun book to read and the perfect engagement gift. The beautiful illustrations are such a sweet accompaniment to the super interesting anecdotes and info that any bride or groom would want to help plan their signature wedding.
