(Full disclosure - won book at a writer convention. This is not my normal type of book. I tried to rate the book based on what it is and not on my personal tastes.)
Crymsyn Hart managed to do what few authors can do - fake me out with a twist and make me like it. Most of the time the twist (which happens early in the book so I am not giving away much) annoys me with the author trying to be clever, but not in this case. The twist is integral to the characters and how they think of themselves and how the story develops.
A love-ish story with vampires and psychics and angels - set in the steamy passion of New Orleans and the repressed kink of Boston. The main couple is a F-F. The M-F action had too much nastiness to my taste (hence only 3 stars). The M-F contained several vampiric rape scenes. I try not to mark down a book for being appropriate to the genre. Vampiric S&M does seem to be standard fare now-a-days. I understand further books in the series have healthy M-F relationships. This one does not! I feel it goes a little too far down the dark path, grossing instead of titillating, but others may differ.
Interesting writing, nice plot twists, should appeal to certain readers. The world-building continues to grow as the series progresses.
Closing piece of advice: Beware playing a vampire, because someday the masks may come off.
